[Q] quick question - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

hey all im a n00b so plz bare with me if my question is stupid lol
is there a ROM u for the s2that would allow me to save contacts to the phone not google account(something liquid smooth didnt let me) also i want to be able to search my phone, and when i sync my contacts with facebook, viber, voxer and whatsapp, etcc i want to get one unified contact instead of like 5 contacts of the same thing…
android version 4.04 is not an option…this version of android took out universal search, which i read online was thanks to Apple lawsuit..idk detailss
im happy with stock (4.0.3) but i wanna get rid of the useless tmobile apps…so basically contacts to the phone (not sync with google) and search my phone is my top priorities ..
are there any samsung roms that have jelly bean? i downloaded kodoo, but playstore and the launcher button didnt work..
roms that i had previous was the newest liquid smooth, kodoo and cynagomod10
kodoo was the closest thing to what i wanted but playtore and launcher button didnt work...
any help would be much appreciated...

An alternative from using your Google account to saving your contacts is via exporting the contacts to a .vcf file on your storage. You can get to this option under the contacts tab of dialer application.
Not sure if it's possible to sync contacts for all the mentioned apps at one time. Aside from Facebook being part of your Google account, the other apps have their own contact list as far as I know.
In terms of ROMs, there are plenty of Jelly Bean Touchwiz based ROMs if you look at the Development section... although they are not the official 4.1.2 for our phone.
One of the options you can check out is the one created by the All-Star Devs here. Good luck!

You need a touchwiz rom
jedi jelly...embryo...jedi mind trick...jedi knight...infamous resurrection...koodo...galaxy_rom
The first 2 are jellybean...everything else is ics. Find the rom threads and follow the op flashing instructions and see which one works the best for you
Also if you have a contact on facebook phone and whatever other accounts you have just open one of the contacts and click menu...join contacts...and search for the other contacts you want to merge..

thanks for the info
the tweak v2 rom was pretty awesome but it didnt run smoothly on my fone,(i wish it did i would have kept it) nor could i load my contacts from sd card. galaxy_rom had too many problems, jedi -->launcher doesnt work properly
i feel the best rom for me would be a samsung based rom(galaxy s3, note2) with jelly bean that willl eliminate tmbile bs apps..any suggestions

[Q] Replacing Sense MMS.APK

Hi all,
My phone is rooted. Not a fan of the Sense 4.0 SMS/MMS app. I know I can download the default ICS 4.0.3 MMS.apk from the market.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.concentriclivers.mms.com.android.mms
When I go to install it, it says it will overwrite the existing application. Before I get reckless...
Couple questions:
- Why is there no existing mms.apk in /system/app ? I can't find it. Does HTC call it something different or...?
- How do I backup the current Sense version in case I screw this up and need to restore it?
- Is the Sense one tightly integrated into the rest of Sense? Will it break other apps, widgets...?
So far I got this working.
1. installed stock ICS SMS from market
2. backed up and removed /system/app/Message+CRC_1.apk
3. rebooted phone
Haven't tested MMS nor any sense features that might bomb (I hope not)
I'll update thread if there are any problems and I need to roll this back
Any Update
Hey. Just wondering if you had any update on how this worked? Everything still fine? I want to go to the ICS MMS app, cause the sense one isn't as nice.

I use it daily, the SMS app works perfectly. Love this change.
The HTC SMS widgets that display your messages on your desktop may not work (don't think mine do) but this is easily remedied by just finding other widgets in the market etc. Just don't put the default HTC ones on your desktop.
Won't uninstalling the app just automatically put stock sense app back in there?

No. The stock ICS app does not play nice with the stock Sense app, you can't have them both on the phone at the same time. Its not like when you install GOSMS or something.
I had to actually delete the sense app right off the phone completely for it to work properly. Otherwise I had strange problems such as messages being sent twice.
Since I physically deleted the sense app there is no going back without re-installing the sense APK.
Did you save the stock apk? No joke one of my hesitations is the messaging app. If I can switch to stock ICS for messaging I may be ordering mine yet tonight.

Honestly no why would i? I updated this post to be kind but I'm not building something here, this was for my own use and it works perfectly. I'd that's not what you're looking to hear, find another thread. I won't lose sleep at night.
As for backing up the original sense app, yes I did see step 2 above. I used adb for this just pull the file.
Again this works perfectly If anyone cares to try it. nothin to lose, if you don't like it just put the sense file back and reboot.
I installed both the calendar and the sms app today and they seem to work fine. Haven't tried mms. Haven't uninstalled anything yet, will see if I run into trouble. Thanks for posting readk, been searching for this but didn't find it until now
EDIT: Ran into problems immediately of course where pressing the Messaging app launched the HTC Messages app. Following your instructions for backup and removal seems to have done the trick though. Next step will be to do the same for the calendar

Wow, get out of the basement once in a while and realize how to communicate with humans. I simply really liked the idea of stock ICS messaging on the HOX and since I don't have mine yet I was just asking to see it because I imagine it would look really awesome. Why would you? I guess since you were sharing what you were doing I thought you wouldn't mind. Guess not.

Adding back stock apps to CM9 (or AOKP)

I booted up my new AT&T S3 and was glad to see the improvements to the calendar and Exchange sync. Tasks are finally supported!
So I flashed to CM9 and Exchange sync was the first thing I checked. Sure enough, tasks were gone. The new functionality must be a Samsung value-add rather than a new ICS feature.
I'm back on stock for now, but was wondering if anyone's tried to extract the Samsung calendar/email/sync and install it on top of CM9?
Damn right! Have the same problem on S2. And all the new JB roms that I have tried does not support it too. Very frustrating... Is there a reason?
Greetings
Hi
i too would like to install some of my stock galaxy s3 (IG-i9300) to be used with my CM9 ROM.
i am mainly interested in:
- SMS app (i liked the way it looks)
- Contacts app (it was very comfortable)
i really can't seem to find any good replacement for the contacts app -__- they're all stupid or trying to be cute.
this is the first phone i've ever rooted and installed a new ROM on, so i could really use a hand with this one

[Q] [need] Supersonic Sense 4.0 and JB rom with all working?

I am looking for a ROM for my EVO 4G that has:
1, JellyBean and Sense 4.0,
2. Sprint VVM working,
3. Facebook profile picture sync to contact's picture (I think this is a sense feature hence why I want sense, honestly I prefer the look of CM10),
4. as much stable and working as possible, especially flash, don't much care about WiMAX and FFC.
I am currently on AlienMOD Solar Flare Series V, which I like for the most part. However, I can not get Sprint VVM to work, it sends me texts about voicemail but I don't want to call voicemail as it uses minutes and I don't always get the texts. Additionally I can't seem to get my contact's picture to sync with Facebook.
Honestly if I could disable the text VM notifications, get Sprint VVM to work, and figure out how to get the contact's pics to since with facebook, I would be happy as is. But I have searched and searched and I can not find a solution that works.
Any help with either of these would be awesome.
Well if that is all you need my suggestion is get a new phone. There will not be any jb sense roms for this phone. Sense for the og stopped with gingerbread.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda app-developers app
Anything after Gingerbread will never have EVERYTHING working. If you want to flash ICS of JB you have to make compromises.
For Facebook contact pictures, I remember an app called Photo Unlocker but it was removed from the Play Store. I haven't had any luck locating it.
Honestly if I could just get VVM working on this rom and remove the text notifactions for VM I would be happy. I can work around the facebook issue.
Haxsync works good for Facebook sync. Or if you want free use free Facebook contact sync.
Sent From What?? My OG EVO?? Oh My! My GS3 must be charging....
Actually I think I am going to try this out...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2166856&highlight=swap&page=8
Does it support swap?
By swap do you mean like an a2sd or something similar? Or as on a RAM swap partition?
There are a few miui issues. Stock mms will error if more than 160 characters are sent. You also have to change resolution of front camera. When first opened you get green picture. I think that is it.

I am also going to give this one a try:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1612933
Honestly I think TNN is becoming my goto ROM dev team.
That is dependant on the kernel. Lionfish will work with this ROM and give you the swap feature. It is what I run on all my AOSP roms. Just be sure your sd-ext is not an ext4 file system. 2 and 3 will work but the the lionfish kernel does not support 4.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda app-developers app
LOL. Always a compromise.... Want sense? Then no JB... Want Swap? No EXT4.... This is a very delicate back and forth... Oh well. I can't complain too much...

[Q] ROM advice please - switched from Evo 4G to Galaxy S2

I've been using the S2 for a couple weeks now and although I'm satisfied with it for the most part, I want the bloatware gone and I want it rooted. Easy enough, except for one thing; there are TONS of ROMs for it and I have no idea where to start as far as which ones are best, and don't want to have to flash dozens of them to find out.
A few things to note;
1 - I'm looking for ease of use, something that includes minimal apps or at least allows me to delete apps that are packaged with it if I don't want them, and something that gets good battery life. I read this thread here and may try Slim Beam Unofficial due to it's better battery life.
2 - Or is there a way to just rip the stock ROM off, remove what I don't want, re-package it and flash it back to the phone? That's what I did with my Evo but it's been over a year and I was VERY familiar with that phone and what tools to use for such tasks. A point in the right direction (ie: link to an informative thread on this subject) would suffice, but specific replies are very much appreciated.
3 - Useful apps would be nice. Perhaps not packaged WITH the ROM but just names of useful apps (I see Titanium Backup mentioned a lot on here) would be helpful. Something to easily copy contacts & texts/call records to my PC would also be nice - the Evo didn't have much as far as that went, at least not that I could find. Maybe some music mixing apps and memory editor suggestions too. This phone is new and exciting to me, capable of WAY more than my old Evo 4G. :victory:
4 - HTC and Samsung have much different interfaces. HTC's was more customizable...I'd like to get that back. Anyone know of any HTC interface ports? Specifically the way the icons on the screen are - I don't like being forced to keep the 4 it came with on the bottom, I'd like to change them to something more useful. Also some switches for a quick data network toggle (not by going into Data Usage to toggle) and stuff like that would be nice. I can do it the Samsung way if I have to, but HTC's interface was more user friendly for me.
Anyway, I'm glad to be back at xda. Thanks for any help/suggestions! :fingers-crossed:
Try AOKP 4.2.2
AOKP B5 3/10nightly NOS V0.0.7
Suppose I'll try that or a stock Samsung ROM. Surprised at the lack of replies and suggestions...usually everyone has something to say on this forum.

Rom: PACman 21.0.1
Kernel: PAC
I'm full of great idea's, but don't have the time to create them or learn the coding to create them. If you want to make one of my ideas a reality just message me and I will give you my idea as specific as possible.
ideas:
-launcher/lock screen
-line rider type game where you control the character
-2d fighting game like art of fighting for the SNES
-multiplayer fps where you create your own map with a creative mode (minecraft style)
-roller coaster tycoon style game
-get phone out of sleep mode
-many more!
Just message me which idea you want info on and I'll tell you!

In reading your post it seems as if to me 1 you need to simply root your phone. From that point forward you can do anything you want to it. Now coming from an Evo which I myself came from, at first things seem different but when its software related its relatively all the same. I know you said you were shocked at the lack of responses but I think thats because your questions/feelings are a simple fix and more personalized than just sending you somewhere.
You dont have to use the 4 at the bottom they can be switched and data toggles are all over the web. Not for nothing but you really need to do some homework on android and the amount of customization apps out there...You are missing out on quite a bit
Steps to personalizing your phone below:
Root your phone
Install Root Explorer
install Titanium Backup
Install Android Commander on your pc (if you like)
Just use Google or Google Play to look up apps
Hundreds of way to simplify your rom and I only named a few.
Use the SGS2 toolkit, install a custom recovery, and root your phone. From there you can delete all the Tmo bloatware and clean up the stock rom.
see how that is for a little while, and if you still aren't satisfied, you can try some of the other roms in the dev section.
As far as apps, I have all my contacts in gmail, which automatically syncs to my phone. Airdroid is a neat app that lets you manage stuff on your phone through a PC that is connected to the same network. Evernote, quickpic, photoeditor, titanium backup, and google drive are a few apps I always install.

All Star Devs or Jedi Knight Roms. I ran Slim Bean for a little bit, but the bugs, as insignificant as they may seemed, would occur too frequently. I'm currently testing out Jumping JellyBeans and lets just say I'll be flashing back to Jedi Knight this evening. Good luck on your ROM Quest.
Yeah I rooted it but it still doesn't function entirely the way I want it to.
In using this phone for a couple weeks now, one BIG complaint I have is the clock & weather widget on my Evo allowed me to check the weather OR change thje time/date/alarm simply by clicking it...unless I'm blind, the SG2 didn't even come with an alarm clock, let alone a way to click the clock widget and edit alarms.
Is there anything like that for the SG2? And yes, I do need to do more research and find out what's out there...which is kinda why I'm asking here instead of spending countless hours which I don't have, reading through tons of forums and trying tons of bunk apps. Anyway, thanks for the advice, it's been helpful so far!

You could always flash a better rom that is newer, like others have suggested. Any rom with ICS or above will have a clock that allows you to tap the widget and get the alarm, and can display the weather below it. If you're looking for a fully loaded rom, "PACman" (see the link in my signature at the bottom of this post) is the way to go. It it 3 roms built into one, "Paranoid Android, AOKP, Cyanogen Mod". I literally bought my SGSII just to be able to use the PACrom, (I came from a Tmobile MyTouch 4G (Doubleshot) which didn't have a working PACman rom link, so far as my patience to find one allowed).
Other options are to install a new launcher for your phone, like the "Go Launcher" from the play store, or an htc clock widget from the playstore or online. Either of the 2 will instantly provide you with your clock and weather settings.
I have world weather clock widget on my lockscreen. Has weather and time. I think there might be a way to configure it to set alarms, but I'm not sure. I don't really ever set alarms on my phone.
I am using JB 4.1.2 with build Jedi Mind Trick JB2 and the beta kernel as a DD and it is fast and smooth. Prior to I was using Jedi Mind Trick X4 by the same dev and I prefer JB 4.1.2 over the X4 but everyone is different.

[Q] stock email and s voice apps.

Hello All,
I'm new to the forums, new to android, and new to rooting. I recently switched over from iphone, and it has been a bumpy yet fun ride.
I have an unlocked Galaxy SIII SGH-i747M running the Illusion ROM, android ver. 4.2.2 illusion ver. 4.2.2.2.1 beta
I really miss the stock email app and S-voice, I'm trying to get them back. I've tried the email app from this package:

as well as this modded app here, which installed OK but doesn't seem to be working as it will not sync any mail no matter what sync settings I choose.

While I'm only 99 percent certain, I'd say this is not going to work for you. From what I know, both of these apps are integrated and reliant upon the Touchwiz interface to work correctly. May be a stupid question, but have you correctly set the incoming/outgoing servers in the email app?

Yes, I believe so. I used the same settings which did work when I had touchwiz. I could tell it was talking to the server because it still prompted to accept all the security settings, etc. it requires, just would never display anything in the inbox.
I did get the s voice to work last night, though (yay) a couple bugs but will work for me. If I cant use the stock email app, do you have any other suggestions? Something lightweight and clean?
Thank you.

When you installed the email APK, did you use a package installer or did you place it in system/apk? If you took the latter step, you may have needed to fix the permissions of the apk. If you used a package installer you may want to try the system apk method. Let me know if you don't fully understand and I will try to be of more help. BTW the permissions should read rw x r x r
. Another thing to look into would be to install the secemail.apk from the S4, as it may be an Android 4.2 thing.
