Hey guys, I try to do my research before posting (this is my first post) but I am stuck on this one.
I have:
PrimoU
Llior's CM9 Rom
Titanium Kiss kernel (ICS)
on Koodo (Canadian Provider)
Problem:
I was running the latest Hellboy kernel, but noticed I had better GPS signal with KISS, so I flashed back to KISS to see if It improved the GPS. It did, but now I have no service! I tried restoring to my last Nandroid, but still have the same problem.
WiFi works, but I have no cellular network connection. This is my daily use device so I would love to get some help on this one if anyone has some ideas. For now I am stuck texting on my old optimus one.
Confused!
Thanks in advance!

I made sure not to flash the boot.img from inside the zip and always ensured I used a CM9 kernel which I flashed before installing a rom. I ran CM9 with the KISS kernel originally as it was what was recommended at the time. Upgraded to HELLBOY to try out new kernel features but reverted to see if the GPS worked any differently. I don't know to much about other carriers, but does your phone require a sim?
Yes. It requires a sim.
Tried the sim in my old p500. Sim card works.
Power off the phone and remove the sim for some time(10~15mins).
It always works for me
Or,there may be a problem in the sim slot.

Thanks. Tried that, but no luck.
There is no way I could have messed with the radio or baseband by flashing a kernel, is there?

One more thing that you can try:
- flash stock rom
If you don't have signal with stock rom, might be hardware failure. If you still have warranty, just go and replace it...

For some odd reason I cannot flahs any custom kernels. Whenever I flash some rom, the included kernel will work just fine. But if I flash another one, like franco or matr1x, I end up in bootloop, or stucks at boot. Anyone else experienceing this behaviour?
You need to make sure you flash a kernel that is built for the version of android you are using.
For example ARHD 2.1.1 is 4.0.2 so you can not use the Matr1x v1.5 kernel because it is built for 4.0.3
Always read the OP before flashing, the info is there
Edit: messed up my version numbers

I have the same problem - no matter what kernel I use or how I try to install it I have yet to find one that will work with a stock version of ICS 4.0.2 on my phone - they always freeze at the boot screen, I don't get any further.
I have indeed checked versions before flashing.

[XXLE4]Issue with custom kernel - disturbing reboots
Hi everyone,
I am facing an huge issue that make me unable to flash any custom kernel without rebooting.
I though it was because brand new XXLE4 cannot support 1k+ frequencies or may be another things than I could not have been imagine because of my poor informatic and linux knowledges but it seems that i am just unable to flash custom kernel. only the original CF-ROOT doing his job but others aren't.
May be because of the SetCPU apps but it is less sure that the origin take his effect from that apps. It is a quit anoying because I would have been set my Scary 120 - 1350 to get an impressive battery life with the brand new UC-Kernel but seems to be a mirage for me.
I had got some custom roms but I can't just use them because I want an real free-bugs ROM an official release are the only one option for me and my usual usage.
Thanks in advance for the help provided and I apologies for my bad english.

4.0.2? I believe no custom kernels support 4.0.2 anymore. Updated/latest versions of said custom kernels at least. I think franco has a 4.0.4 version of his though i'm sure very few people are on 4.0.4, 4.0.2 is just a thing of the past.

I've tried many different roms, one of my favourite is light orange, a fast yet stable stock based rom. However, recently I have a 2g contract (before this I only use wifi for networking), sadly I found that even I turn on (using toggle / directly from the setting) the data (with / without the use 2g only option) I can't really connect to the network.
Later I tried several other roms including Adrenalineâ„¢ ROM (stock based), XperiaTized (should be stock based?), but the network was still not working (though other things such as call / sms worked flawlessly).
Meanwhile, CM based rom such as DebianDroid, CyanogenMod 7.2.0 RC1 Miracle Edition ( which is currently being used ) and even XperiaICS ( CM9 based ) work painlessly with the 2g network.
I want to know if my location (Hong Kong, China, Asia) matters for the 2g network problem. I really want to use stock based rom for lightweight, better battery and stability. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance
P.S. I factory reset and wipe cache, etc before flashing roms. But I don't think the way I flash rom matters because the CM based roms have no problems.
-- edited --
Due to some typo, I should clarify that 2g is NOT working on light orange either.
Now I switch to Enchanced236. The 2g data works finely but I don't know why the phone keeps rebooting after I restored apps using Go Backup
It's maybe because of deodexing problems. I don't know why there problems come up after deodexing, but have you had these issues with the ROM being Odexed?

Sorry but I don't know what you mean. Do you mean
1. roms that are originally odexed; OR
2. I have to odex the roms myself( is it possible ? )
If 1 is what you mean, it seems that most of the newly released custom roms are deodoxed, including CM7 I guess, so I should I find some old roms to test it? But with Enhanced236 ( deodexed ) I can have data, don't know why
If 2 is what you mean, how to do this?
Sorry I'm a newbie

Hmmmm
(Only Custom ROMs that are based on Stock might have these problems)
Well if the Custom ROM is poorly deodexed (not sure how) then the OP, has to re-deodex the ROM from scratch (Stock) and hopefully do it right this time. Then the OP adds the mods & tweaks.
If you go with #2, I think you'll still get the 2G problem :-\

Yeah, I guess so...
But it could be other problems. Not just deodexing
(But for me, it's most likely to be because of that. Because Stock ROMs are supposed to be stable. So if an issue like yours pops up, then I blame it on the deodexing process)

Maybe some of the restored apps or data are incompatible with something in the ROM. AFAIK, app restoring also keeps application data and some settings, not only apks.

I will try again to see if there are apps/data that cause the reboot problem. Your ROM is a smooth one that I like very much:good:

Hi Everyone,
Long time listener, first time caller.
Over the last couple of months, I have tried virtually every ROM I can get my hands on for my DHD, and I always do a full wipe (format) of /system, /data, /cache, Dalvik, and .android_secure before install.
The only ICS ROM I can get working fully is Blackout, but it is Sense 3.6.
I have tried Viper, and *really* like it, but Bluetooth is broken (in 1.2.0, .1, .2, and .3)
That seems to be the case for me with Sense 4 ROMs (lite or full); if Bluetooth works, then WiFi is broken. If WiFi works, then Bluetooth is broken.
ROMs I've tried (latest):
Viper
Miui
Jellytime
ARHD
Blackout (S3.6, which is where I'm at b/c it works)
IceCold
IceSense
CosmicSandwich
Sabsa
codefireX
Kernels I've tried (various releases up to latest):
Beastmode
KangBang
Virtuous
So, I'd like to know if there is such a thing as a fully-working ICS/JB ROM with Sense 4? I cant seem to find one. W/o Bluetooth and WiFi, nothing can be considered a "daily driver", imo... especially w/o Bluetooth, if you know what I mean.
Thanks!
I'm baffled; all of those ROMs should have both BT and wifi fully working. What's your recovery and version?
EDIT: and what's your radio?

Same here, bluetooth is one of the few things that ALWAYS work (except for 4.2.1, but that's expected).
Are you wipping between flashes ?
Thanks for the replies, guys.
As I outlined above, yes, I am fully wiping b/t ROM installs - even restores - please see my method in first post.
I am using ClockworkMod Recovery (HBoot for booting) and have paid for ROM Manager, which entitles me to further updates to CWM than what is available on Play. I currently have 5.8.1.5 installed (CWM Touch).
The radio varies from ROM to ROM it seems, and I should have documented which version in each ROM, but right now, in Blackout, it is reporting 12.56.60.25P_26.10.04.03_M. <--- That number stays consistent, afaik, but the first letter will change (U and T, iirc).
When I say that Bluetooth doesnt work, specifically what happens is that it either doesnt pair with any device, or if it does pair, no sound will be transmitted or the pairing will only last for a second, maybe two seconds at most.
Deleted.
Sent from a dream.
The radio shouldn't be changing with each ROM unless you change it. But with that said, nothing seems out of the ordinary. You could try reflashing your radio manually? Other than that I'm out of ideas.

I dont know much about that, but with that said, I just re-flashed Viper 1.2.3 and my radio now reads:
12.56.60.25U_26.10.04.03_M, which is different than it was above with Blackout.
I have not tried re-flashing my radio manually. I wouldnt know which one would give me a better chance of success...

Once I flash a new ROM, the kernel and the radio are the same I had or the new ROM comes with its own kernel and radio?

roms do not come with radios tho they do have their own kernels. Radios are region based not rom based so there is no rom specific radio just what works best in your area.

Thanks for the explanation. So, if I bought my mobile in Spain, the radio is different if I had bought, for example in France?
depends on how close they are to each other whether same service is used in Spain as in France or if they are totally two different service. I would Google the carrier you use then see what radio they shipped with. Even in the radio thread you may find an answer to which radio is good for you in the area your at.

This is a general note for those interested in a fairly stable ROM for the US version of the (CDMA) Wildfire S running 2.3.5 (Marvelc.)
After trying several other ROMS, some supposed to be stable with CDMA but were not, I can state the MIUI v4 - 2.8.10 by Henry_01 DOES work with my US Cellular WFS after updating from v2.3.4 to 2.3.5. However, I had problems when installing via cwm recovery for reasons I cannot fathom, but everything went smooth after reverting to twrp 2.2.2 and doing the simple wipe thing...
Just for the record... Yes: Both Data and Wifi worked straight from 1st boot.
Nice Work Henry-01 ^5
UPDATE:
MIUI v4 failed... I couldn't find a fix for the GPS, I'm guessing because I couldn't find an option in Settings to activate GPS... but the ROM was still stable otherwise.
I will try other ROMS and add my findings here as I go until I have something working at least 90% I don't expect 100% as these ROMs need to be tested and continually developed, especially for marvelc.
Currently running: cm-9.1.0-CRYPTOMILK-ALPHA9-marvelc
This appears to have updated my android version to v4.0 ? It doesn't come with GAPPS so I installed myself using goo.im goomanger from there site v2.2.
This was yesterday. Checked and working:
Wifi, Data, GPS, SMS, Phone.
Camera/Camcorder and browser. (Browser seems a little slow and glitchy... but that may have been down to the connection... not sure yet.)
I will test further today...

I'm not familiar with "Cron mod" but... I did try the marvelc cm-9.1.0-CRYPTOMILK-ALPHA9-marvelc yesterday, I couldn't get the cm7 or cm9 working while using cwm recovery but never tried the cm9 Alpha9 until now, and of course I used twrp as I find it appears to work great on my device.
Anyway, this alpha9 is to date: The ONLY ROM I've installed on this MarvelC wfs that actually works with wifi/data/gps having no issues, and I flashed gaps by downloading goo manager from the goo.im site.
Now to test and read some more and find out if I have any bugs on this rom.
As I've tested quite a few roms this week... I may at some point start a thread with all roms that I COULDN'T get to work on the wfs US cdma...
jelly bean roms work pretty great, except GPS but if you turn WiFi on (don't need to connect to an access point) it gets you dead on. for me at least. and yes you can flash cronmods int2ext+ with twrp 2.2, so im guessing you can flash the rest as well.

For me, the GPS needs to work, for travel. Wifi does get you very close but that is no good when using the navigation to follow a route by instruction. I didn't even realize at first that the wifi did that and thought that the GPS was 'Working' in CM9. Alas it was not... So another failure for me :/
well the only two roms that work flawlessly with our phones is jmz sense and teamblueridge sense. which kinda stinks because they're gingerbread.

Kernels control the hardware functionality. They specify higher-level functions so that the software (Android OS) can properly interact with the hardware. The kernel is what contains the drivers and such that you need for your different radios to work (mobile network [LTE or 3G] and wifi), as well as things like power management and proper boot/shutdown sequences. If its not implemented in the kernel, theres no way any programs can access the higher level functions to get the wifi going, or to get 4G going.
This is also why it's difficult for some devices to get working 4G on android versions past what is officially supported because the 4G drivers have to be written from scratch into the kernel, and they change from version to version. Now its not impossible, but very difficult
Hope that answers your question

Knowing this, does that mean TW kernels are better for writing things like 4G? I don't know how to explain my question, I guess I'm asking if TW kernels are more 'compatible' since they're just stock modifications.
OK the reason I'm asking is because of my port of pure aosp the stock CM kernel will not do WiFi but any other kernel will Lean BMS KT
Why work with one ROM but not another.

No, what I mean is that once its officially released (for this phone it would be Touchwiz), then that can be incorporated into aosp kernels made for that official version for a specific phone. Both (theoretically) run it just as well, theres no compatibility issues in favor or either. But of course, since TW kernels have been engineered for this phone while AOSP has not, AOSP kernels would require a little more hacking to get it to work, hence possibly degrading the quality of 4G or other radios

Wifi broken
So, on a Sprint Galaxy S3, after rooting first with the unified toolkit and finding that my wifi no longer works, I went back to the stock version and found I still had no wifi. Because I'm a quiet one, I'm not allowed to comment in the forum that originally started this and I don't have 10 posts yet. So, here I am - sort of on topic and sort of off topic. But the bottom line is, I need to fix wifi since I'm *always* in roaming and connect to the world through my wifi.
So.
Ideas?? Please.
Thanks!

When you rooted, did you install a custom recovery (CWM or TWRP)? Turn off your phone and boot into recovery and see if it's either of those.
You're currently on an out-of-date system. I don't think that's why you don't have Wifi, but I thik it'd be best if you try the latest and greatest.
If you do have a custom recovery, you can flash the stock rooted rom by Freeza. If you don't have a custom recovery, you'd have to re-root and make sure to follow the instructions (including pulling the battery).
If you need help with how to flash a Rom in a custom Recovery, I wrote this up for a thread earlier.
Hope you get your wifi working.
I guess I'm not sure how to answer your questions. I do have ClockWorkMod (that is what CWM means, right?) on right now, yes.
That page you recommended is over-the-top. There's so many choices, I don't know which one to make! I think I want Odex, just because I'm not a developer at this stage. Because I'm starting out with CWM, do I want this one or that one?

Or am I just completely off target?
Thanks for replying and I hope my wifi gets fixed, too.

Yes, CWM is ClockWorkMod.
I'd recommend DeOdex Rom, because if it doesn't work, you can still flash mods onto it that might help you out (without reflashing a whole new Rom). If you install the Odex version, you wouldn't be able to flash most mods out there.
I haven't messed around with the "Leaked" build, so I'd personally recommend the latest official, which is the MB1. The link you should be looking for is:
DeOdex:
Sprint Touchwiz Jelly Bean 4.1.2 L710VPBMB1 | Mirror | Mirror 2 (Not yet active)
MD5: 37E1CCCB3A30959C64DF238D0BD2B23C
If you download this file and install it per my previous instructions (that I linked to, make sure to do a Nandroid Backup and to wipe the /system in CWM), Wi-Fi should be working. If it doesn't I might have another thing I'd want you to try, but I'm fairly certain this will do the trick.
THAT worked beautifully. I guess I just needed jellybean. lol. So, I'm rooted, on the latest and greatest, AND I have Wifi! Yae!
Thanks so much for your help!
