Issues with custom kernels - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

For some odd reason I cannot flahs any custom kernels. Whenever I flash some rom, the included kernel will work just fine. But if I flash another one, like franco or matr1x, I end up in bootloop, or stucks at boot. Anyone else experienceing this behaviour?

You need to make sure you flash a kernel that is built for the version of android you are using.
For example ARHD 2.1.1 is 4.0.2 so you can not use the Matr1x v1.5 kernel because it is built for 4.0.3
Always read the OP before flashing, the info is there
Edit: messed up my version numbers
Sent from a phone that is not running ICS

I have the same problem - no matter what kernel I use or how I try to install it I have yet to find one that will work with a stock version of ICS 4.0.2 on my phone - they always freeze at the boot screen, I don't get any further.

I have indeed checked versions before flashing.

[XXLE4]Issue with custom kernel - disturbing reboots
Hi everyone,
I am facing an huge issue that make me unable to flash any custom kernel without rebooting.
I though it was because brand new XXLE4 cannot support 1k+ frequencies or may be another things than I could not have been imagine because of my poor informatic and linux knowledges but it seems that i am just unable to flash custom kernel. only the original CF-ROOT doing his job but others aren't.
May be because of the SetCPU apps but it is less sure that the origin take his effect from that apps. It is a quit anoying because I would have been set my Scary 120 - 1350 to get an impressive battery life with the brand new UC-Kernel but seems to be a mirage for me.
I had got some custom roms but I can't just use them because I want an real free-bugs ROM an official release are the only one option for me and my usual usage.
Thanks in advance for the help provided and I apologies for my bad english.

4.0.2? I believe no custom kernels support 4.0.2 anymore. Updated/latest versions of said custom kernels at least. I think franco has a 4.0.4 version of his though i'm sure very few people are on 4.0.4, 4.0.2 is just a thing of the past.

[ROM] seeARMS' XWJV1 Gingerbread BETA - Voodoo Kernel [3/5/11] [v0.1]

Hey all,
Here's a custom ROM based on XWJV1 with a focus on speed and stability. Nothing too special; it's just a stock, unthemed, deodexed, optimized Gingerbread BETA ROM with some minor modifications.
PLEASE NOTE: This is a BETA ROM running on a BETA KERNEL, so I don't recommend installing this ROM if you're afraid of breaking your device / don't know how to use ADB / get upset when your phone crashes. This ROM is smooth, sleek, and looks damn good too, however, again, this is a BETA ROM, so there are going to be bugs on any ROM based on JV1. Don't complain.
Features:
Voodoo Gingerbread Beta Kernel
Based on Stock Gingerbread Beta XWJV1
Fully deodexed and zipaligned
Fixed build.prop, permissions for launch_GPS, as well as many other minor file tweaks
Removed Samsung Bloatware
Removed Startup + Shutdown sounds
Fully updated Google Apps + Swype
Gingerbread screen-off animation (Very cool. )
Removed Apps:
-Allshare, Press Reader, Aldiko eBook, Buddies Now, Layar, Mini Diary, Write and Go
Added apps:
-Launcher Pro, Gingerbread Launcher, Gingerbread Keyboard
Download: http://www.multiupload.com/YFJTDTFVD0
Installation Instructions:
Flash from CWM after disabling all lagfixes. If you don't know how to install a ROM you shouldn't be using this one.
Have you got the new tweak by nickadeamus or whatever his name is?
Hi.
Just downloading will give a try.

Don't scare everyone man, your bootloaders are fine, your /system got corrupted resulting in a bootloop.
Corrupted bootloaders would mean either complete brick, or no 3BR
hi seearms just downloaded rom and installed jl2 modem everything fine so far, but time will tell. i was on ultibread when i came to yours so it was an easy transfer
Switched from a fresh stock 2.2, strangely i got the glitched screen when trying to enter recovery. Any suggestions? I see advice to flash boot.bin but I've not flashed JV1 prior to this so it can't be a bootloader problem.
Thanks.
Just wondering can this be installed from cwm if your current rom is froyo?

To install ultibread I flashed jv1 via odin, then unchecked auto reboot and flashed a hardcore kernel pulled the battery, rebooted into CWM and flashed ultibread as a zip from the sdcard . Should be the same procedure here, good luck!
I've been running your rom since yesterday and so far it's great with the JL2 modem. Highly recommended thus far...stable and fast like u said and even faster after enabling lagfix

Flash JV1 via Odin first, I believe it's the secondary boot loader in non-JV1 ROMs which causes screen tearing in recovery.

Technically Nikadeamus said that it "may" work on GB but hasn't tested it.
EDIT: Some users with JV1 claimed to have noticed only a slight improvement if any at all. However, it may just be plain old placebo at work.

[Q] stock + custom firmware dualboot

Hello everyone!
I am planing to root my htc desire hd cause i've read lots of stunning stuff you can do when your phone is rooted.
like using the newest version of android, installing google now and so on..
But my question is, is it possible to stay with my stock firmware (and if possible stock kernel?) somehow
and use one or more custom firmwares with programs like boot manager to find one for daily use?
and what are the disadvantages of using a custom kernel? cause i've read the following, looking through your forums:
In the present case,It is hard to say which kernel is good .All unofficial kernel have the same headphone button issue, and only 5 sensors(DHD have 7 sensors).

(i dont even know what he means with 7 sensors.. )
ps: sorry for being so noobish and thx in advance for your answers!

If you use AAHK (no idea about HTCDEV method) you can simply do a full image backup of your stock firmware, including your kernel (this is called a nandroid backup), after you've rooted but before you flash a custom ROM. Then, wipe and flash custom firmwares to your heart's content. If you ever want stock back, just restore that backup. I'm not aware of a dual boot manager, though.
Usually, the kernel that came with the firmware (aka ROM) is the best kernel. Devs will post about alternate kernels that are compatible with their ROMs. (Note that if you're planning to use the latest version of Android, Jelly Bean, there is a compatible alternate kernel.)
No idea about those sensors.

Yes u can boot multiple roms using boot manager i hv seen it work but i hvnt been able to do it myself or u can say i was less intrested to pay attention. But the answer is yes u can. Head on to the boot manager in play store it gives u all the info u need to get u phone run two or more roms at the same time.
P.S: Speaking of which i think i might give it another go again but this time with interest.

GT-S5660M ROMs?

Are there any Galaxy Gio GT-S5660M (Canadian) ROMs currently in development? Arpeggiomod is a nice rom, but I hate Gingerbread. To add, ny stock ROM is faster than Arpeggiomod. I know I probably can't do any better, but I still have a good 2 years left of my phone contract and I want my Gio to be fast, fluid and responsive. I have tried ROMs for other models of the Gio, but they either don't work or they don't appeal to me. Getting to the point, I was wondering if anyone would be up to the challenge and develop a ROM specifically for GT-S5660M. Can someone help me start and learn to develop a ROM? It'd be really appreciated.
any rom that is not flashed by ODIN but in recovery can be used, the only thing is that it isnt called a s5660m model anymore, but every hardware works.

Please, only say "every hardware works" when you ACTUALLY HAVE an GT-S5660M.
OR at least understand what the thread-opener wants to say, before just throwing vague and meaningless stuff around.
The thread-opener (and for the novices in general) can withdraw nothing useful from your post that concretely will help him flashing his S5660M without causing some major problems to GT S5660M (for example the radio).

and there's nothing wrong about this sentence, as its just the truth.
Radio is different, indeed, but the radio does not get overwritten within the .zip file that is flashed via custom recovery. only in odin-flashable .tar.md5 files theres a file called 'Amss" wich is the actual radio file, and is different between S5660 and S5660M models.
however, these files are only for odin, and can not be flashed in recovery.
so, my point is just right.
as long as you don't flash roms with ODIN, nothing can happen, as it does not overwrite the radio files, as I already said before. roms via recovery don't flash anything that is different with the S5660 or S5660M.
maybe you are the novice-wich-doesn't-understand here. you are the one throwing vague and meaningless stuff around. you should consider aquiring some more knowledge before talking like that.

Hey there, I have a 5660m (5 of them!) and have flashed many a rom. Arpegio was great for its time, I believe darkshado created it (Guessing, its been a while). However, there are soooo many great roms out for this device now. As previously stated, and 100% agreed with, if you have recovery installed, you can use the 5660 roms too. A year ago, when I got mine, there was a modem differential. However that has been explained in the above posts. I can think of several that I prefer but am hesitant to state any one. I started with cy4noobs, then moved to McClaw's ICS (I hope I'm giving proper cedit to dev's), MIUI is a unique interface, there are so many. I'm pretty sure there is a list of roms that will work......gimme a sec.....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535320. I've been through almost everyone of these (i'm a flasher, in the legal sense :laugh. Some may seem outdated but still work well, make sure you look through the dates, and the logs to make sure you have the functionality you wish to achieve. Happy flashing!:victory:

You mentioned that most ROMs work - I've tried Maclaw's AOSP ICS and each version or update (Beta 1, Beta 2, Beta 3 and RC1) fails to work. By work I mean that it flashes properly and boot properly but it freezes on the lock screen for a moment then a screen saying 'Encryption Failed' appears and asks me to factory reset the phone with a button below. The button clicks but doesn't do anything and when I manually factory reset via recovery, the same screen appears after boot!

Kernels and WiFi

Why do some kernels kill WiFi when flashed. Or is it just a mobile Odin thing
I have also tried to replace the kernel and rezip same issue
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
Kernels control the hardware functionality. They specify higher-level functions so that the software (Android OS) can properly interact with the hardware. The kernel is what contains the drivers and such that you need for your different radios to work (mobile network [LTE or 3G] and wifi), as well as things like power management and proper boot/shutdown sequences. If its not implemented in the kernel, theres no way any programs can access the higher level functions to get the wifi going, or to get 4G going.
This is also why it's difficult for some devices to get working 4G on android versions past what is officially supported because the 4G drivers have to be written from scratch into the kernel, and they change from version to version. Now its not impossible, but very difficult
Hope that answers your question

Knowing this, does that mean TW kernels are better for writing things like 4G? I don't know how to explain my question, I guess I'm asking if TW kernels are more 'compatible' since they're just stock modifications.
OK the reason I'm asking is because of my port of pure aosp the stock CM kernel will not do WiFi but any other kernel will Lean BMS KT
Why work with one ROM but not another.

No, what I mean is that once its officially released (for this phone it would be Touchwiz), then that can be incorporated into aosp kernels made for that official version for a specific phone. Both (theoretically) run it just as well, theres no compatibility issues in favor or either. But of course, since TW kernels have been engineered for this phone while AOSP has not, AOSP kernels would require a little more hacking to get it to work, hence possibly degrading the quality of 4G or other radios

My guess would be that the paths for different things arent what its expecting, you would have to split the boot.img and diff the files to find out for sure though

Wifi broken
So, on a Sprint Galaxy S3, after rooting first with the unified toolkit and finding that my wifi no longer works, I went back to the stock version and found I still had no wifi. Figuring that it's better to be rooted so I can tweak things, I rerooted using QBKing's method (much easier, by the way). Wifi is still broken. Is there not a fix for this yet?
I've got:
Model#
SPH-L710
Android Version:
4.1.1
Baseband Version:
L710VPBLJ7
Kernel version:
3.0.31-CL616748

SMP PREEMPT Sat Dec 1 23:25:55 KST 2012

JRO03L.L710VPBLJ7
Hardware Version:

Because I'm a quiet one, I'm not allowed to comment in the forum that originally started this and I don't have 10 posts yet. So, here I am - sort of on topic and sort of off topic. But the bottom line is, I need to fix wifi since I'm *always* in roaming and connect to the world through my wifi.
So.
Ideas?? Please.

When you rooted, did you install a custom recovery (CWM or TWRP)? Turn off your phone and boot into recovery and see if it's either of those.
You're currently on an out-of-date system. I don't think that's why you don't have Wifi, but I thik it'd be best if you try the latest and greatest.
If you do have a custom recovery, you can flash the stock rooted rom by Freeza. If you don't have a custom recovery, you'd have to re-root and make sure to follow the instructions (including pulling the battery).
If you need help with how to flash a Rom in a custom Recovery, I wrote this up for a thread earlier.
Hope you get your wifi working.
I guess I'm not sure how to answer your questions. I do have ClockWorkMod (that is what CWM means, right?) on right now, yes.
That page you recommended is over-the-top. There's so many choices, I don't know which one to make! I think I want Odex, just because I'm not a developer at this stage. Because I'm starting out with CWM, do I want this one or that one?

Yes, CWM is ClockWorkMod.
I'd recommend DeOdex Rom, because if it doesn't work, you can still flash mods onto it that might help you out (without reflashing a whole new Rom). If you install the Odex version, you wouldn't be able to flash most mods out there.
I haven't messed around with the "Leaked" build, so I'd personally recommend the latest official, which is the MB1. The link you should be looking for is:

Sprint Touchwiz Jelly Bean 4.1.2 L710VPBMB1 | Mirror | Mirror 2 (Not yet active)
MD5: 37E1CCCB3A30959C64DF238D0BD2B23C
If you download this file and install it per my previous instructions (that I linked to, make sure to do a Nandroid Backup and to wipe the /system in CWM), Wi-Fi should be working. If it doesn't I might have another thing I'd want you to try, but I'm fairly certain this will do the trick.
THAT worked beautifully. I guess I just needed jellybean. lol. So, I'm rooted, on the latest and greatest, AND I have Wifi! Yae!
Thanks so much for your help!

well, right now i have franko kernel installed , no params adjusted... not even sure where i would find the section in settings.. on a stock Verizion JB 4.2... im not even sure what would be the best rom to try
some one suggested MetalC.. but i cant find the Gapps that work with that one... so what i need is a solid ROM, Kernel and Gapps..
i was able to root via the Nexus Root Tool kit... that went well... but now i need to decide what Toro version rom i need to use.. and im keeping an eye out to see if the Franko kernel brings any joy for those random reboots and shutdowns... the guy i bought the Gnex from said he will do a full refund but i want to sort this out if possible... this little machine is too cool just to cash out on...
time to research on roms and stuff i guess..

For 4.4 go for cMetal / Playfulgod / dhacker's CM builds, for a 4.3 experience i dunno any one for toro and for kernel i think you can try out MpoKang as it can be flashed on 4.3 and up just have a look in the official thread and you'll be able to find zips plus use trickster app for the kernel control :good: !!
well, a bit of a followup friday swapped out the stock kernel for Franko kernel... and i have had it on for about most of the day yesterday and zero random shutdowns and no SOD.. this little thing is great and its a lot more easy to have this around then a remote for 2 google tv a roku and an xbmc box... i have not delved into new roms, the JB stock seems to be working fine im getting at least 10 hrs out of the battery... this is be best micro tablet i could ever find for 70 bucks... and the screeen is quite nice.. im sure i will be moding soon enough... but for now just a kernel change seems to have put an end to the sleep of death and random shutoffs..
