AT&T data speeds slow. - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hello,
I have been having terribly slow data speeds on ATT in Alabama. I thought after my bill cycle renewed that it would get better. But my bill cycle renewed on January 16th and I'm still getting slow data. Slower than I have ever gotten like 1 megabit per sec to 3 megabits per sec. I usually get 4 to maybe 7 megabits per sec. Is anyone else having issues in Alabama?

I'm not from Alabama so I'm not really sure how strong the signal is around your area and if it's normal or not. I suggest you try the Network Signal Speed Booster from the Play Store (sorry I'm not able to post links yet since I'm below 10 posts) and see if it improves anything. What the app does is reset your phone's radio connection and find the nearest cell site so you can receive better signals. I hope this helps

Thank you. can you tell me which app though whose the creator?

You can also change your apn, that is if att has you partitioned for "4g smartphone plan". I walked in, requested a new sim and made sure that receipt said "4g for smartphone". Guess that's if there's 4g in your area.. If you're interested, look up phone apn for gnex.

Here's the APN I've been using.

Well I'm using pretty much the exact same apn as you.. Perhaps you've been throttled? Do you use lots of data?

It depends on the month lmao. I thought that's what it was. but.... my bill cycle restarted on the jan 16 and it was still slow. I went to AT&T store yesterday. first off the guy wanted to know where i got my galaxy nexus. but he said they were having issues with their service and to download mark the spot app. but i did and it kept making me send crash reports. anyway the guy gave me a new sim card. I just put my sim card in my old HTC Inspire 4G and I got like 8 megs down. when I'm getting 1 meg down on the galaxy nexus. so I'm like WTF?

Did you get your gnex new? What radio baseband is it on? I can verify that htc phones have stronger antenna reception, but not to that extent..

yes i bought it brand new on july 2, 2012
baseband version is I9250XXLH1

Got mine just about the same time! I wonder if you were to call them and see if they are still having issues [which seems obviously not if the inspire works]. Then again, is the inspire hspa+ or lte? Is the new sim set up for hspa+ or lte? Only other thing i could think of is trying to flash a different radio, just to try them out.
Also, have you looked into the crash reports from mark the spot? Have you tried to find out why it crashes?

Not sure what the issue. Att said they were having issues and yes I'm set up on hspa+ its gotten better since I used the APN the HTC inspire had. But it still goes up and down.

One X on ATT

So I've had mine on ATT here in Dallas for about 24 hours.
I used my iPhone 4s Micro SIM and did nothing else to the OneX.
The data seems to be working fine, I've used a Unlocked GS2 in the past and this cycles between 3G and H just like the GS2 did. Maybe a hiccup to get the data flowing but it seems good. For some reason Speed Test over ATT didn't work in my house, so I haven't done a speed test on it yet.
Calls seem good, haven't made too many yet and I have a Micro Cell in the house so I have a good signal.
Tones are a tad low vs iPhone4s, ringing is ok, but messaging tones are a little quite for your pocket.
Battery seems pretty good, on my first charge and took a bunch of pics and vids today the usual new phone messing around and its at 45% since 9am-415pm.
I am getting some distortion when listening to music, used Google Music for a jog and it was breaking up, also tired DoubleTwist and when I click around on the phone while a song is playing I get weird sounds over the headset.
Also I'm using Google Voice for my Voice Mail so I never had to call ATT to switch anything.
The big question is will I keep this version or get the ATT's One X when it comes out??
Keep This ONE
By all means, try to convince yourself to keep this ONE X. The AT&T coming out wil be the XL, gaining AT&T 4g-LTE which will still be throttled by them. You will be losing the Tegra3 Quad Core in exchange for a Dual Core in the XL, you can't have both yet apparently. I want to have something not branded by AT&T. I have had the ONE X for about a day now, and liking it, alot!
That's good to know that you are having the 3G hspa signal changing back to forth. I'm trying to decide between my iPhone 4s and the one x. I'm not loving the size but I figure it's because I've been using the iPhone since version 1. The speedtest app does not seem to work.
The switching between 3G and hspa is normal, it's a trigger to save battery. If your using the one x on your iPhone data plan call ASAP and swap to an android data plan. You will see increased performance on an android data plan vs iPhone data plan.
Same here.. iPhone 4s convert. Using my micro sim from my iPhone.. using google voice for V-mail..ect ect ect..
I was playing around the APN's today and this one is giving me the fastest speed and lowest latency.

Screw the LTE version.. faster phone or faster data speed? I'll take faster phone with better international custom ROM support.

Idk if thats true actually. That's what I thought initially, but i've read otherwise.
My i9100 did that switching between 3G and HSPA, which caused a slight lag in response of data.
My Galaxy Nexus almost constantly stays on HSPA and I rarely see it switch back and forth between that and 3G if at all.
I've read about the AT&T 4G data plans and the guy said that switching to it from the old iPhone made it stop switching from 3G to HSPA.
The only thing is I'm on the old grandfathered unlimited plan so it contradicts.
The only thing I can think of is with the new 4.0.4 update.......WCDMA preferred is selected. You can check by typing *#*#4634#*#* and I'm thinking this is why it's always on HSPA which has led to faster data response times since it doesn't need to switch from that 3G to HSPA
It also isn't draining battery so I don't think the 3G to HSPA is a battery saving thing. I managed 3 hours and 20-ish minutes of display time with over 11 hours on battery and still have 40% left which was better than I would get/around the same as my i9100, when the Gnex should be getting worse battery life.
So I think it deals with what network mode is selected in *#*#4636#*#* leave it on WCDMA preferred and see how it is. The 4.0.4 made this the preferred choice on almost all Gnex.
And as for One X vs One XL, I'd take One XL just because Krait is a faster SoC and LTE is pretty amazing if you have it in your area. Integrated LTE Radio should also improve battery life a lot compared to other LTE phones. AT&T version might have a larger battery also like the Sprint version but no one knows.
Matt,
Did you change your data plan to Android 4G then do those new APN setting or are you still on the iPhone4s data plan??
I have to agree with this phone is better than the ATT's version, I just came from the iPhone 4S and before that a Samsung Skyrocket, the LTE sucks the battery and the data speed are not needed on a phone, 4G with better battery life and a faster processor and more storage is what I agree is a better product.

lol......that is what AT&T version is. 4G with better battery life and a faster processor, storage is same probably.
Tegra 3 isn't faster because it uses more cores. It's using older architecture compared to the dual-core Krait and it shows. In most tests, the Krait is faster, it also uses less power etc...because it's on a smaller fabrication process.
But if you want better ROM support, the international HTC One X is probably the way to go.
Your skrocket uses the old LTE which isn't integrated and sucks down a lot more battery.
And you can use that APN with whatever data plan. You don't need to be on an android 4g plan. It doesn't always yield faster results. There's a whole video of it on youtube. Phone APN yielded the slowest (it does for me also) while WAP.cingular and PTA(doesn't work anymore) yield the fastest data speeds. But it depends on your area so you should test it out.
I switched "my device" online at ATT's website to the Samsung G2 which I used for like a month awhile back. That pretty much solves the problem for me. ATT knows pretty quickly that you're not using an iPhone any more.
I did this when I had the SGN for a week or so and I didn't have to call anyone at ATT and explain myself.. which could be quite a chore if you end up with an ATT rep that doesn't have much of a clue.
I think with the build quality of the HTC One X and Sense 4 running on ICS.. the quad core keeping things buttery smooth. It's finally an iPhone 4s replacement for me. THANK GOD.
Ok, thanks
I'd have to agree with both of you guys, if the ATT version ends up with a better battery I might switch since I am in LTE. Not that that matters that much to me, as does the quad core vs dual core. I do like the 32 gig of storage, ATT's is lookign to have only 16.
Ok, I'll see about switching my phone only, but if the speed test app doesn't work, how are you guys testing out your ATT data speeds on these different APN's
Has anyone who switched their iPhone plan to a non iPhone data plan seen a increase and more stable data speeds?
Speed Test app didn't work when i was using the default medianet apn. Works fine with the APN settings I posted. And he's definately right about results will vary by location!
I can tell with real world use.. Stuff is downloading faster for me... web pages are loading faster.. facebook is snappier..ect..

good, cause i really haven't noticed any difference. compared them both and they both have the same speeds.
Hows the GPS when you try and use say Fandango to locate the nearest theater over ATT not WiFi??
Or if you use the Google Nav and say Navigate to Starbucks, it seems that it takes a long time or not at all to find a GPS lock over ATT.
Another question, under Mobile Networks
Are you using GSM ONLY or GSM/WCDMA??

I told you to try WCDMA in my first reply.
Mine is on it, and it stays on constant HSPA. No battery drain, which is why I think the 3G to HSPA switching isn't a battery saving feature at all. I've read threads/posts where the 3G to HSPA switching is actually bad.
Opps, thanks, I'll try it out.
I did call ATT and I'm on 4G data now as well.

Okay, you probably didn't have to change....but you might experience faster speeds possibly.
Check if it switches between 3G and HSPA constantly.

Thinking about going to Straight Talk

So I am thinking about going to over staight talk.I did a litlle research but couldnt find anything definite. I was wondering how well it has been working for other people. Do I have to flash an AT&T radio? What are the apn settings? All that type of jazz

I'm using the AT&T sim card through straight talk. You can get a T-mobile sim but I don't have any experience with that.
I am using the default tmobile radio. I get much better signal through that with AT&T than any radio I used with Tmobile in my area. 3g speeds only but it's an acceptable trade off for me (better signal and $600 bucks/year savings).
Use the APN settings on the straight talk webpage.
I currently use straight talk with the T Mobile SIM card and reception and data speeds are both fine for me. I haven't run a lot of speed test or anything of that nature but service works, calls work, I receive SMS and MMS messages promptly, and thus far have had a little issue with anything. I also managed recently to Zero my IMEI. No effect on service.
Was able to get a discounted rate and used a cash back card also, and got my monthly service down to $36, which I locked in with 8 months reserve. Am on month 3 and have yet to regret leaving post Paid T-Mobile.

I have ST on my gs2 right now with the new sbean 13.5 ROM . The service is def nice . I pay 45 a month and I get unlimited service. Even though its frowned upon I still tether my phones internet connection and it works great as well. My speeds with straight talk on at & t are about 7megs down with 1 meg up , I play minecraft on my laptop at park with no issues as well. Ping is usually around 120-180 but if you tether through USB instead of a WiFi hotspot it will bring it down to were games are playable .

[Q] Can't get unlocked ATT S3 to pick up Tmobile data.

I live in Tampa, a place that has had the 1900mhz 3/4g on tmobile network for a while source: androidandme dot com/2012/12/carriers/t-mobile-upgrades-14-new-metro-areas-to-4g-hspa-on-1900-mhz-band
Now I got my unlock code straight from ATT over the phone, told them I was going overseas on business), and unlocked the phone perfectly fine. Put in my net10 Tmobile sim, and activated and updated the apn. I can make/recieve calls, send and recieve text AND MMS PICTURES, but when I try to use data I only get the "G" symbol and slow as **** speeds (like .07mbs down)
Any way to fix this? I know it should work but its just not.
Sorry bout the (dot) com thing, wont let me post links and it's kinda important.
Alright, after flashing a new modem I get "E" instead of just G and slightly better speeds.... and by better I mean about ~0.15mb/s ._.

Before we go into too much troubleshooting, check your imei. Settings > about phone > status
That's sounds like a what happens with a Verizon phone on at&t. In don't think the bands are compatible that net10 leases. I think it also varies greatly by area. Straight talk would be the best for a prepaid using an at&t phone

I looked there and I don't know what you mean by check it, but it is the correct numbers in the settings, and it matches the back of the phone... Also I don't know what IMEI SV means (software version maybe?) but it says 2.

Net10's website simply says any unlocked GSM phone operating on 850 and 1900 MHz bands, which this phone does, and T-Mobile upgraded their towers last year from 1700 to 1900 in Tampa, so it should work just fine.
Is there any way for me to check what bands a phone is currently using? If so I can check on my brothers phone which is a T-Mobile phone running on Net10. If I could check what band's it's actually using for the 4g it's receiving then I can confirm for a fact that the problem is on my end.
Either way though, thanks for your help guys, I appreciate it.
EDIT: After about two hours searching I cannot find a way to find out exactly what band he is using, however I realized since his is a T-Mobile phone it would probably show 1700 either way. I need someone with a iPhone or other GSM in Tampa to confirm I guess... Kinda a problem tho.

well im on simplemobile which is tmobiles frequency also.. I am using stock modem, 1747UCDLK3, I get 4g speeds of 4000 - 17000 kbps depending on time of day.. better at night time...

Build_01_17_2013_UVDLJC_S3_I747&T999_JB411, tmobile rom, cant really test cause I used up my 250mb of 4g, but I am getting and E instead of 3g.. speed on 3g is 195kbps. hmm slow.. I usually get 240 or 244 kbps..
I changed the build prop to represent ATT d2att... everything works great...

Huh, Well I installed the last one on that list and it works!!! I get 4g and first speedest hit 8.5 down 1.5 up. Not too shabby compared to 0.15 on edge lolol
So I guess now my question is how did you do it? What if anything did you change and why does 4g not work at all on CM10.1? Curious.
For me I had to do a factory data reset, once I did it worked perfectly on the stock rooted ROM.

I haven't done anything to my wifes phone for over a week, I think its tmobile antenna, which I use simplemobile..
I noticed my s3 would work downtown tampa, but not where I live in town and country... all around my area I was getting E... for a brief second or so I would see 4g and it would change immediately to E.
so I changed the following step last night to make both phones work and got 4g..
in settings... more settings... wireless and networks... mobile networks.. NETWORK MODE= Changed to WCDMA ONLY... seemed to do the trick.. I never had to do that before..

Well I was too hasty before, my phone only gets 4g in a couple spots out and about Tampa. Most of the time it's only Edge, which leads me to believe it is in fact just T-Mobile sucking.
I tried that WCDMA setting and that disconnects me from mobile networks completely. Like if I was in airplane mode.

Net10 Wireless now supports LTE

This isn't exactly NEW information, but it's something that I had just noticed. I knew that StraightTalk had introduced LTE into their prepaid plan, but apparently Net10 has as well. Granted, it's not unlimited data, but for the average user, 2.5GB should be more than plenty.
I've been on Net10 since July of this year. It's been pretty solid so far and my only complaint was the lack of 4G/LTE service. After flashing the new MK2 modems today I noticed for the first time that my Network Icon was showing 4G LTE; not just the standard 4G when connected to 3G or H+. Also Settings->About Phone->Status shows me as being connected to LTE... so just throwing that out there.
I'll throw out my APN settings that have working MMS and everything; although I do believe they're the standard APN settings on Net10's page.

This looks promising. In your opinion then, there's no downside at all to doing this? I don't use Wifi calling so I would not miss that. What kind of data speeds do you actually get? If it's even close to what I get now (mid 20's, usually), I'm sold. The only concern I have is this sentence in their "transferring a number" section: In order to transfer or port in your phone number to NET10 you must have a NET10 wireless phone. I plan on calling them to clarify, but does this mean I can't bring my current number over with my phone, that I would need to buy one from them? That would be a deal breaker. Thank you.

This looks promising. In your opinion then, there's no downside at all to doing this? I don't use Wifi calling so I would not miss that. What kind of data speeds do you actually get? I didn't see a down side. I was fine just getting 3G as I'm not usually in an LTE area anyway. Why pay $90 a month when you can get pretty much the same exact coverage for half the price? I came from AT&T and have the same coverage as i did previously.
As far as speeds go, I was just shy of 20 down when I tested the other day. I would upload a picture of it now, but I'm not getting too great of speeds where I am right now. Currently I'm only getting about 7 down and 12 up.. But I'm also in the middle of nowhere atm. I'm getting the same down speed on LTE here with 2-3 bars as i do on full bars of 3G. Upload is considerably slower on 3G though.
As far as porting your number, yes you can port it. It's a simple process and I do believe their website explains how to do it. I think I called though and had them do it over the phone. I do remember that your number still had to be active on your current network.. As in don't cancel your service until you set up net10. In fact, once you start the porting process, they take care of canceling your current service anyway.
And you don't need to buy a device from them, check the BYOP (bring your own phone) program.

This isn't exactly NEW information, but it's something that I had just noticed. I knew that StraightTalk had introduced LTE into their prepaid plan, but apparently Net10 has as well

FYI Net10 IS StraightTalk. In fact the APN settings are the same when using the new AT&T ST sim as the ones you posted :good:

Net10 is StraightTalk's non-WalMart-subsidized side. I know they use the same APN's, but while StraightTalk had 4G, Net10 was stuck on 3G.

Straight talk have LTE for their AT&T sims not on tmobile sims.

[Q] A question about M919 radio/modem

Hi folks,
I've got a T-mo M919, with MDL bootloader, which I use on ATT. I bought the phone after comparing the hardware and seeing all the same bands needed for ATT are supported on the TMo phone (but, not quite 100% the other way around).
Anyway, the phone works fine... calls get through, texts work, data speeds are the same as the S4 I337 (ATT variant) I was using before. My question is less functional and more cosmetic.
I've noticed that the LTE signal indicator is usually pretty low. Don't think I've seen it report all 4 bars... ever! It's usually showing LTE with 1-3 bars. This is in places I would get pretty much full signal, on the ATT phone.
Since my T-mo phone is on MDL, pre-Knox, and has an older LTE radio version, while the ATT phone I had (still have... gonna sell it!) is NC1 and thus has a later LTE radio version, would this explain the difference?
I've flashed the NB4 modem onto the phone (the modem.bin file only!) and didn't notice any difference, but I understand this is just for GSM. I get full bars on GSM (before and after flash).
Since the phone works fine, I am not too concerned, but it sort of bugs me that it shows such "low" signal. Is there some calibration I should run or something?
Marc
What build are you running?
Currently on Dirty Unicorns 7.8 but saw the same thing when I was on 4.2.2 MDL TMobile Samsung stock.
It is interesting. Here in my office I get between 1and 3 bars but no dropouts or anything noticed so far. Here it was 3-4 bars solid with the ATT S4. We have repeaters throughout the building for great coverage.

Having low bars is normal.
It's the towers, not us.
Sometimes I'd say a custom rom shows what your actually getting more accurately.
I'm on the latest cm nightly. Nb4 modem flashed as you described.
But, I'd expect to see more bars on 4.4.2. Stock.
But, there wouldn't be any difference in actual call quality, etc.

Maybe you could used xposed to change or remove the offending task bar icons.

If your at&t device was on official KitKat then that's why, signal bars are reported higher in KitKat, but not on aosp/cm ROMs, they will show your true strength.. Best thing to do is to compare your dBm strength to another at&t device on their network
Thanks everyone! At the end of the work day I realized I had my ATT phone with me in my computer bag. So, I first observed the T-Mobile phone for a few minutes in a few locations on my desk. Over that time the signal ranged from -89 db to -94 db, with most readings between -91 and -93.
I then swapped the SIM card into the ATT S4, and observed it for a similar time in the same locations. It ranged from -91 to -96, with most readings between -92 to -94. So, basically identical, maybe a db or two weaker reading.
Then I figured out how to get my work-issued iPhone 5S to give me readings (field test mode... seriously! ) and it ranged from -93 to -97 with most readings between -92 and -95.
I repeated the test here at home, where the readings range from -99 to -104. Same pattern of Tmobile S4 phone ever so slightly better reception than ATT S4 and ever so slightly better than iPhone.
So, my concern that perhaps the TMobile antenna was not as good for ATT as the native ATT phone has been disproven, and as the wise readership here has counseled, it's all in how the various Stock or custom ROMs report the signal.
Issue resolved.. Thanks for your input!!
Marc
I was having the same thoughts last week. Bought a M919N (MetroPcs) and odined with T-Mo stock. After root, recovery and roming, my signal was low. I usually get full bars on my i337, but only got 2-3 on this one. I changed my preferred network to 3G, then back to LTE. Getting full bars in my house ever since.

So basically the t-mobile S4 gets better reception than at&t's S4 and iphone? WIN!! Lol joke, but you're welcome! This is a common concern for people, but when you test this things it's not about how many bars you see on your status bar, but dBm strength

Definitely! +1
I would say the difference in reported signal strength was marginal but pretty consistent. Interesting to note, that even with -102 db signal, iPhone was reporting 4 out of 5 bars of strength...

Yeah my S4 on kitkat touchwiz shows 4 out of 5 bars on a similar strength. Guess Samsung wasn't the first to do this
how do you guys get LTE speed on at&t with the t-mobile s4? I tried several ways including changing the build.prop name, model and device to at&t values.. I do get the at&t 4G bar symbol but no LTE.. any other ideas? I'm running GNF1 V3 NB4
I have been meaning to write up my experiences, but in short:
1. On stock Samsung ROM (MDL build) I plugged my ATT sim into the phone, booted, edited the APN to the ATT values, and set the preferred mode to LTE. Done. LTE speeds (for me, 5-25 Mb/sec same as the ATT phone).
2. In Dirty Unicorns ROM I just selected the pre prepared ATT APN and made any edits to match my settings I usually use. Made sure LTE was preferred mobile mode and boom it works.
I think you have a ROM config issue. Are you set on that ROM or willing to try others? Best of luck.

so basically you're saying that I should go back to stock and after changing the apn it should be good? also, I would prefer TW for now, I might switch to cm later, but is GNF1 not good for LTE if i'm on at&t? any other suggestions?
Right. On stock rom, it should work fine after you edit the APN and change the preferred mode. If you want to stay on TouchWiz, a great rom I used on the atT phone was Goldeneye. Meanwhile I really like the dirty unicorns ROM on my phone. I am using version 7.8 and it is a a weekly build from August 10th or 12th I think. I haven't tried the new version 7.9.

Ok ill try and update. Do I need to install the at&t version of that rom or t-mobile?
My technique is to match the phone hardware during install, to make sure nothing like modules / radios gets messed up. Then manual APN and preferred mode edits which are easy.

I use exactly these from the All Things ATT thread, which match my stock ATT phone.
Name: ATT Phone
APN: phone
Proxy: Not set
Port: Not set
Username: Not set
Password: Not set
Server: Not set
MMSC: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS Port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication type: None
APN Type: default,mms,supl,hipri
APN protocol: IPv4
APN Roaming protocol: IPv4
Turn APN on/off: APN turned on
Bearer: Unspecified
Mobile Virtual Network Operator Type: None
Mobile Virtual Network Operator Value: Not set
In some ROMs the last two don't show up, in which case I just skip them.
It's also important to set the preferred mode to LTE.
