LG Optimus G v. Samsung Galaxy Note II - Sprint LG Optimus G

I have had the opportunity to use both of these phones and I just wanted to take the time to discuss what I have found. This is purely for an informational basis for people who are average users who are trying to decide on a phone.
Which is easier to root?
I am not a developer but I have a few friends that are and they have always rooted my phones in the past. With both of these model's I choose to do everything myself an untrained noob if you will. The easier phone to root I would have to say is the Note II. Although developers have done a great job with the Optimus making it a one click a toolkit is literally idiot proof.
Development communuties?
Their is a distinct difference between both communities although the Note II has more development the developers are far more willing to work with you then the Note II devs. The LGOG wins hands down.
Overall phone performance on stock ROM?
LGOG wins hands down the Note is huge but that's not is biggest down fall. I love using my phone with one hand as do most who will read this so functionality is one challenge that the Note can not compete with. Although the Note 2 come out of the box with JB and the LGOG is still stuck on ICS it is also future proof as us the Note 2 but ICS is all hella fast!
I think the LGOG is the best phone for your money on Sprint! If you have any personal questions about the phones or anything like that just PM.
Thanks and I hope this helps anyone on the fence.

Hello And thank you for your review. I want to add a little to what you wrote because you started on the consensus of the average user.
I am not writing this to Discredit anything you wrote..
So to try and Make My opinion as least Biased as possible I will leave the development Aspect aside - To even start to compare the number of Devs or even the development done on the devices is not only far out weighed by any Galaxy III/ Note 2, but there are also set conditions that played a Role in Development. A lot of that Has to Do with the Companies themselves.
Having literally owned every Top Sprint Device. I will start on more consumer based experience. To be quite honest even that will be hard for me to do so my post may be slightly opinionated as well.
More people are probably going to gravitate towards a galaxy product not only based on marketing ALONE FIRST AND FOREMOST.
Both LG And Sprint Spent Little Time marketing the Device. A big part of this has to do as to why there is a certain amount of development from one device to an other.
Elaborating on the stock Features and hardware of the devices having DONE NOTHING to both devices. To the average consumer again this is a superfine line. Again You can go by stock specs alone, but does that mean much to the true AVERAGE user who absolutely does nothing to there phone is going to notice any difference at all. To really be honest no the average user isn't going to even notice the hardware differences at all. In fact a average consumer may be not only drawn to a product alone for marketing but there are other trend factors. (I would not even began to compare stock camera performance!)(Removable Battery) ECT.
One may like the Optimus for the Build Quality/Looks/ ( Screen IPS Display, which again is Consumers opinion as to what picture looks better)
Strictly "consumer" again Customer service between both companies - "In My findings personally" I feel that Samsung reps have better customer service skills and product knowledge. ( Dont want to elaborate why, thats a page in it self 'Thats Why i said personally")
Software updates - Having an every top of the line Samsung android phone on sprint since the Moment - I have seen not only dev grow but Samsungs Commitment for updates! (Trust me it was BAD!) - Having LGs press release saying that it was to debut with JB - is a little let down! But lets hope its around the corner super soon! (im sure t is!!)
Having literally every top of the line android phone from SPRINT -from HTC ----LG...I would say this phone has its Niche with us NERDS!!!
THAT IS FINE WITH ME!!! I feel people appreciate this device for its sexiness and performance which only US NERDS can really understand and began to appreciate in this device!!
Again I dont mean to discredit what you wrote because it is valid and im sure many people feel the same. I was just trying to provide a more general over view.

You are fine I just love the opions I love the optimus g this was nothing against it. Love to see where development is going. I will be back on it soon!

So no one has had the problems I've heard with the Optimus G? Like weak vibrate, poor phone call quality, poor signal, etc? I'm trying to decide which phone to switch to (I have the Note II but I think it's too big) and I thought the Optimus G would be a good phone to switch to, but I'm a bit worried because of all the problems I've been hearing about.
I'm all about the awesome hardware in the phone, but if the phone just doesn't work well then you can have all the processor speed you want and it'll still be a bad experience. :/

I have had uses with my mic (poor call quality) but it was different on different ROM's. Like the lifeless ROM so all was good.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda premium

So a custom rom would help make it a better phone call experience?

My concern is your rooting method...
I have the optimus G and i can say, in terms of simplicity, rooting this device was the easiest device ever to root that I've had. seriously, like 7 commands in a terminal, a button press on the phone, and it rebooted with perm root. NOT difficult at all.

It helped mine

A toolkit helps everyone, not saying it was hard to root tge LGOG but the toolkit is universal for all

I just got my LGOG and I love it so far but I still can't decide if I want to keep it or swap it out for the note 2. The only thing that is making want to switch is the fact that there are way more roms and dev on the note than there is on the LGOG. I've always had HTC before and there is tons of dev over there. My question is do y'all think that that there will be more roms and etc. In the future? Or should I just switch to there note 2? I only have 3 days left to decide.

The roms will come, but there's no way im downgrading my hardware. Exy4412/Mali400 is last gen. The S4 pro has tons of potential and a bit more future proof.

Everyone says once LG releases the Korean Jellybean source code there will be a ton of roms.
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda app-developers app

No disrespect to the devs over at the sprint Note 2 but all of the roms look the same. Only ROM worth having is jellybomb rom. And CM10 is still at alpha stage.
The Note 2 is a great phone but it size become a shore to carry around. Trust me I had the phone and its size will becoming a pain in the ass at times.

Sounds like you may have got a Dud..it happens!! My siganl is actually great-Voice quality..One of my biggest complaints about the phone is the screen believe it or not, i notice lines in the grays ..and isnt as clear as they make it seem. But in the sunlight this screen Rules!!!

Yeah I think I'm keeping the LGOG. This phone is pretty much the prefect size I think. I'm coming from an HTC sensation so going to they note would be a big size difference. Also I was using my friends note today and I think I just like this phone better. He even liked it better.

Why wouldn't it be possible? The number 1 difference between this phone and the Nexus 4 is software and software can be rewritten.

Optimus G Sells 1M Units?

Just saw this online. To be fair, this is probably 1M worldwide, but the phone has not yet been released in China or Europe, and that is still a not insignificant amount of handsets in the quarter or so since the release date. If they keep bringing premium handsets like the OG to market LG could easily knock HTC or Motorola out of their spot in the Android Ecosystem. Samsung is likely not to be moved from it's spot any time soon, but it's impressive for a company that the average consumer doesn't even consider when thinking of an Android phone. Maybe they should buy some airtime and run some commercials :silly:
I'm sure LG can make a mark on the smartphone market especially after this phone. When I first got my epic 4g, Samsung had a crap reputation in both their software and their updates. This was a time when HTC was the big player. On top of that, they now got the most active community, something else HTC had. If Samsung can rise out from the bottom like that, anyone can, they just gotta play their cards right.
Man time sure flies, I had that phone for 2 years and I chose the underdog again, lol.

I actually followed the exact same path. I bought the epic because of its specs and because of its relative obscurity. Same reason I bought the OG.

I knew so many people who got the Optimus S.
It was free and a great phone. We had so much support for that little thing. I remember we even had ICS when we barely got GB from LG.
They took forever to release it and it was very buggy. So they had to release a downgrade back to Froyo.
I loved it and still working for my brother. 2+ years.
Now with the OG this phone is a beast. I almost never get a lag and games play well. I love the fact that it has 2GB ram so I could truely multitask. So if more people see why we got this phone than LG may put more support and even more people will like it, etc

Also had the epic. They have had one of the best development communities around. Hope this phone will get the same support. This phone is awesome if they can fix the signal issues. But remember when the epic first came out is when Samsung took on the nexus line. Same goes here for this phone. It should have a good future ahead of it.

I trust my man xboxfanj, I always had a top notch experience with my Epic, and always had the latest release of Android on it. I have no doubt that the development for our OG will match any of the development for any other device out there.

Yeah the Epic development was slow at first as well. We didn't get CM7 going til slightly before CM9 due to lack of source.
I actually think by lowering the price of this phone will be good for getting more units to users hands and in turn will create more developing.
I've been watching Ebay this past weekend and it seems unreal that one could land such a great phone like our OG for around $325.
It wouldn't be long before people realize how much more of a bargain it is to just pick up this phone over anything Sprint currently has to offer.

Love this phone

I have owned literally EVERY high end android device that has been available in the US. Even some that haven't for that matter. But this is by far the best device i've ever owned. It excels in every area. The display is phenomenal, the specs are top notch, and the real world use is where it should be considering the power this thing flaunts. As far as smoothness and fluidity go it's in a league of its own. I've had the note 2, i've had the one x+, I've had the dna, and they cant even hold a candle to this device. All we need now is for some of the awesome devs we have to pump out some JB ROM's and we're golden. The dev support is there though. With all those things considered, I'm going as far as to say this is the best phone ever made IMHO. Thoughts anyone?

But really, If youre not on sprint or verizon you should just get a nexus 4. Its almost the same thing, but better software side. Also, not many people like LG so not as many users (or devs) as we would like. JB is on its way though. I tried a few methods along with other devs, and well get eventually.

Severely doubt that rumor. Samsung is Android's Apple. They will bump as minimally as possible to sell the next model. Quad core, 2gb ram, 16gb storage. Book it.
This phone is the best on the market outside of the Nexus 4. If we can get past this bootimg bull**** from Sprint and LG we'll have a really fun phone. HTC Evo had a very slow takeoff as well, and before you knew it there were too many roms. We're almost there and I love it.

I can honestly say this is he best I've had so far. At first I was considering the iPhone 5, but too many people at my job had it. Did a lot of research on this phone and saw a lot of people bashing it before it even came out. When the phone was released I went to sprint to get a feel for he phone and they didn't even have it on display! No love was given to this phone at first. I took the leap and bought it at bestbuy anyway. Best decision I made as far as picking a phone. My brother got the gs3 and when I showed him my phone he liked the lgog more. Not to mention his phone is always on the charger as opposed to mine lol. Glad this phone is getting some love tho.

And everyone is like "I LOVE YOUR PHONE!!!" I am very happy I got this phone.
At first I didn't want it with rumors being LG wasn't the greatest and....no removable backing. But I bought it and it was the best decision ever.
Only thing that would make it better is if the JB update came to my area already

G2 or Nexus 5

I am probably moving on from this phone to either G2 or Nexus 5. From a developing standpoint it looks like I would be able to contribute a lot more to G2. However, I have been pretty busy lately and would love to be continuously updated with the latest android. What do you guys think?

Bigger screen, I like the back button design, hardware that will keep up with other phones for quite a while.
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda app-developers app
Given LG's history of releasing a new flagship device every 6 months and quickly forgetting about their previous flagship phones when it comes to software updates, Nexus 5. (It'll feel newer longer.)
The Nexus 5 is GSM and CDMA compatible; higher resale value down the line.
While the Nexus 5 has a smaller battery, the built-in wireless charging capability (also featured on the Verizon LG G2) means occasional top-ups throughout the day are easy and convenient. While the wireless charging pads don't come with the Nexus 5, the price difference between it and the G2 mean you can afford at least two (one for work and one for home).
If you're considering a mobile provider that gives you a discount for not subsidizing a phone, the Nexus 5's retail price of $349/399 (16/32GB) versus the LG G2's ~$600 can save you a lot of money over the course of your carrier's contract.
TL;DR: Unless you need the 3000mAh battery, 5.2" screen, IR blaster, or moar megapixels... I'd advise the Nexus 5.

You'd be getting a sprint variant presumably right? The LS980 dev forums could use a little pick me up, roms are being built for multiple variants in one, and while thats cool and all, it would be nice to see LS980 specific roms/kernels. Since the N5 community is over saturated to be honest, another dev wouldn't matter much on the N5 seeing as everything over there has been built or is in the process. On the G2 however a new dev would be more appreciated seeing as there only a handful comparatively speaking of devs working on the sprint variant, hope this gives you some help on your decision!

I love being able to contribute by building ROMs, but I have been super busy with life and work. I am happy with my decision to get the optimus g, but with 4.4 ROMs and most ROMs in general being glitchy it really makes me want the nexus so I can be constantly updated without many issues. I agree that the nexus won't need anymore devs, but maybe that's not a bad thing for me. I already feel bad when I don't have enough time to get something out to you guys.

I'd think it fitting to do exactly and only what is right for you, and no one else.
As to voice + data services, these vary by region of the country. It took 2 years where I live for Sprint to go from selling 4G LTE phones and charging for them monthly to actually delivering on it. Now, I couldn't be happier with the data and voice quality (though voice has never been an issue where I reside).
T-Mobile may be great where you live, and based on what you've stated about wanting time for you and wanting a trouble-free update experience, go with the Nexus 5 and be done with it.
I wish you luck.

I appreciate all the opinions and thoughts. I ended up going with the nexus 5 on t mobile. I did the jump program so maybe in 6 months if I have the urge to contribute more I will try something different.

How do you like your LG?

So I am about to start my new job with At&t in 2 weeks which will bring me into a universe I'm not familiar with. I have been on Verizon FOREVER! So my boss told me that my first phone is on the house I really like the Note 3 but I'm guessing the bootloader is locked up tight just like it is over on Verizon. So I guess i'm just fishing for info. I think the optimus G pro is what im leaning towards. So if it's not too much trouble let me know what you think about it. Thanks for your input ahead of time!
Fun phone.

Fun phone. It's big enough but manageable. Several roms to choose from as you can see.
It's awesome.

NOTE 3 IS THE WAY

While I don't have a OGP, the only gripe about LG is the slow official software and the custom UI seems overly done but otherwise, I think it a lovely phone.
Note 3 is greater in performance and hardware, so I advice that, well there should be easier ways to unlock bootloader on note3 forum link. Our OGP is good but not enough for 2014 standards(a week away).

I traded my s4 for a g pro and couldn't be happier. it's a great phone with great battery life on stock and custom roms. also very easy to root and install cwm.
Thanks for all the input guys. Before I became a flashaholic choosing a phone was easy. Now I have consider things like bootloaders and rooting. I don't know if I could ever just use a stock phone again.

I have my OGP e988 (Taiwanese) for couple of weeks now. I like the stock rom it has all the value pack stuff already, no real need to root since I'm not sure how to (so many conflicting experiences). The things that bother me though are overheating (not really HOT but warmer than I'd like it to be), plus I don't know how to check the temperatures (only battery temp is shown in apps) and what I really hate so far is the camera - a significant framedrom in dark environment (I dunno if I'm doing something wrong). This is my first Android phone so I'm still a noob (haven't figured out how to wipe the dalvik and other caches). What I LOVE about the phone is the battery, the screen and everything else.

Lol can't agree more. Coming from galaxy nexus initially i did feel a bit uneasy with the Ogpro forum cause every other rom was for a different version of Ogpro(e980,988,986,f240). Lg is crazy i should say.. One international gsm version n one cdma version should be the norm kinda like samsung.

+1. Experienced in getting some failures during flashing the rom which not compatible with my e988.

Did a whole lot of research before buying the OGP, myself. I came from the AT&T LG Optimus G which was converted to a Nexus 4. I was stuck between this, the S4 or waiting for the Note 3. Ultimately, the OGP won, as you can see. After playing with a Note 3 I can safely say that I'm way more than satisfied with my purchase. I noticed no speed increase between the OGP and Note 3 and I run my phone at 1.1GHz. The Note 3 is also waaaaay too bulky. I have big hands and can't even keep a good grip on that thing with 1 hand. No worries with the OGP and texting 1handed is a breeze. We might not have that big of a community but what we have works. As far as failed flashes, I think it depends on what recovery you're using. Had loads of problems until I switched to Madmack's hacked TWRP. Haven't had a problem since and that was months ago.

Very Little Development

This phone is a great phone by far but the lack of development on a phone that's been out for a little while now is ridiculous!

Works good for me
AWESOME G3
I believe is due to the fact that many variants of the device have locked bootloaders. For many devices ROMs are made to certain variant and then later ported to the rest or mods and features get cherry picked into ROMs for other variants

Agreed. Makes me almost want to go back to HTC or Samsung. :/
I'm optimistic that it'll pick up within a few months, though.

T-Mobile variant has an unlocked bootloader. I will be patient tho because the potential this phone has is unbelievable.
Op has a point, the note 4 would be the only worth thinking about

Most people have contracts and a subsidized devices, the amount of people paying out of pocket at least $320 for the device is very little. So if take that in consideration, T-Mobile device owners are a small porcentage of the whole community. When I got my Note 2 it took like 4 months for any real development to actually kick in and later it turnt out to be a very mature development device. I just got mine a week ago and just starting to play with it this sunday, I know of at least a few more developers that are getting it subsidized closer to Nov due to contracts. This beast is amazing tho! Lets wait a bit.
Lg3 is a superior product right out of the box....devs do their work on their time and mostly on their own dime....for a very small minority of cell phone modders....so if development is lagging it can be understood. With what few choices we have...my phone is humming and battery life is unmatched....

Lol instead of complaining about the lack of, why don't you develop something for us? Not being a smart ass by any means but most of us bough this phone knowing development won't be sky high. I am not complaining because frankly I can't do anything with this phone (I am a Sammy Dev girl) but I am not complaining either. To complain means I can do better which I can't. It also means there's means of doing better, which isn't possible cause the bootloaders are lock or in process of being unlock. So rather than making thread, spend time looking at the Dev forums unlock the bootloders, learn something you can teach the rest of us who aren't doing anything and make us something to contribute to the lack of developing.
I have seen that liquidsmooth is working on funding for a g3 to develop for and I've heard of other devs mentioning that they have some plans. Especially for getting aosp there is always a wait since it's not like with the nexus phones were they have all the files to build they have to do it through trial and error to get everything running right. So give it time.
I gotta laugh because i invested money into the phone and my opinion is my opinion but everyone's first response is to get defensive lol. People the phone is awesome so I'm by no means saying i regret a minute with it I'm just saying i love diversity in choices i.e. roms. Smh people need to relax

Lol, you have to understand...we get a thread like this atleast once a day lol. The redundancy only takes a while before well, it become redundant.
Development in general, unless if nexus, is slow. I think only HTC fares well in that department. I wonder if its because it is so close to stock and not bloated with everything? Also they do unlock their devices. Who knows
Thanks for the empty words of wisdom
