[Q] Rooting help neaded for note2 - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey guys im new 2 android community... ive a galaxy note 2 GT-N7100 International version bought in India. Recently ive been thinkin 2 root my device for various mods like copyin/ installing games on memory card etc... so i wanna know wat software should i use 2 mod my device?? Also i wanna know if its safe??? Ive heard that rooted devices leads to void of warranty... is that true???
thanks in advance....

You should use the wonderful Note2 ToolKit, found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1923956
Yes, rooting it voids your warranty. But you can flash back a stock ROM and unroot if you need to take your phone in for service.
All modifications have risks. Though rooting probably won't break your phone, an user error on your part just might, or malicious code might. You can never know that! You have to be careful and use your best judgment. Rooting is basically like logging in to a computer with an administrator account, you can change all the system settings and as a result you can really screw up your system if you are not careful.
I'm just saying all that to clarify that if you do root your device and mod it, have an accident and screw something up, it's your own fault. You need to always keep that in mind.
When you download the toolkit, the first thing you need to do is:
1) EFS backup
2) Full Nandroid backup
Do those two things first, then do whatever you want. If you have EFS and Nandroid backups you have a safety net in case something goes wrong later on.
Also: read, read, read. Read every single Note II guide and FAQ you can find here on XDA.

Questions about rooting an EVO

Let me first say I'm a noob to this whole rooting thing and I would like to get some more info on. I tried searching the forums for the answers, but I failed to find what I was looking for.
1) What is this nand people are talking about? RUU? ROM (what's the difference between sense and no sense)?
2) How do I backup my apps, etc before trying to root?
3) Which guide do I use? My Evo came with 2.1, but I did the stock update to Froyo.- I don't wanna end up with a 500 paperweight.
4) If I need to bring my phone in for service how do I return it to stock?
5) I know you can turn your phone into a free wifi hotspot after rooting, what are some other advantages to rooting?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
ok now let me remind you im not far ahead of you so let me tell you i would wait for a few more posts before taking what i have to say to heart, but i cant leave someone i may be able to help (even a little in need)....
1. the phrase "NAND" refers to the term nandroid backup, which is when you create a backup file. like a system restore point for windows, so when u start doing some different customizations or just try flashing some different roms assuming something goes wrong you will always be just one click away from doing a restore back to a fully functioning rom that you backedup previously. i believe the 2 main programs associated with this is amon_ra and clockwork.....
2. as far as backing up apps i just save the .apks on my pc and reinstall them once i reflash a new rom, but from what im reading you can use a program like titatnium backup, app brain...etc. but then again as far as personal experience goes...none here just what ive gathered from reading.
3. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765496
(personally ive rooted with this method and it was very simple just read through the steps before starting and follow them accordingly, dont be discouraged general computer knowledge is needed though) or atleast the ability to move about the computer)
4. returning your phone from the method discribed below is simple as it seems...but again have not done personally only from what ive read: you are rooted (assuming you've used the thread above) with unrevoked3 meaning you have s-off(in laymen terms: the position of the bootloader {ON or OFF} which checks images being flashed to make sure they are signed with the htc security signature),,,you just need to download the unrevoked s-ON file and use that to return the phones security settings and re-download an RUU(RomUpdateUtility) thats official from the htc site and ull be back to unrooted good old-fashion stock evo.
5. and as far as the wifi tethering goes just go to the market place and download a wifi tethering .apk, once rooted of course ....and run it from your evo to connect to your pc wirelessly
*this should help*
http://handheld.softpedia.com/progDownload/Wifi-tether-download-76020.html
and as far as why root, well because when you buy a phone i assume you wanted it to be YOUR phone and with rooting its all about flashing opensource/custom roms to your phone and other things such as kernels to customize the phone to your liking and you cant flash unsigned data to your phone without having su permission, meaning you need ROOT access....
-now again let me disclaimer myself i am also very very new to the whole android community and may be spewing lots of wrong info and am probably quite confused my self but i figure id risk making a fool of my self to help u in the off chance that what im saying makes any sense at all....but yea
If I can root a phone trippin on 28 triple cs you can do it
Boss dextromethorphan.....is no fun, and I dunt suggest rooting ur phone or opperating heavy machinery under the influence of triple c's....

* How to Root N1705 UK Version without voiding warranty? (flash counter etc)

Hi all,
Sorry for the noob question. I've been looking at root guides but am quite confused.
Firstly, most of the root guides are for N1700 and specific carrier variants, like T-mobile, AT&T etc.
I have a UK N1705 LTE model but I can't seem to find any guides on how to root it. Anyone know of any guides for the N1705 LTE model? It's unlocked.
Also, I don't want to void the warranty as I've already sent it in once for a fault so I would like to keep the warranty intact.
Furthermore, can someone please explain the different parts of the rooting process, like what is CWM recovery etc.
Willing to make a PayPal donation as my Note 2 is not feeling smooth anymore and I want to install either the Wanamlite Rom or the Jedi Rom. But people also take it a step further and install things like "red pill kernel" what is a kernel? Does it make the ROM better. I'm looking for a good root so I can speed up the Note 2 whilst keeping all the stock note 2 features intact but I want to mod the themes a bit and also connect a PS3 controller wirelessly which requries a root.
Thanks!
Anyone?

Thank you for your replies.
I'll post back in a week, just sent off my note 2 to samsung as I think the sim card reader is gone. Good thing I didn't root last night.
Also, I've heard horror stories about how people have rooted/installed ROMs etc but have lost their IMEI numbers/baseband etc, how can I prevent this?
1st thing to do after rooting is 'EFS Backup'
I have wrote this in bold red color, but still ppl never care to read and later suffers.

Ok, so an EFS backup basically backs up IMEI, baseband etc?
Is there anything else I need to backup? I use the Note 2 kinda like a tablet and am going to keep Apps on the SD card so I don't mind if I lose contacts, messages etc.
thanks

My own opinion is that rooting does very little to speed anything on the Note 2. All it does is create headaches with backups and restore every time there is a new version of the rom. Unless you need a very specific feature for root (like colored LEDs, camera mute, etc..) I would stay away. My Note 2 was awesome until I rooted it, then the force close, force restart, and battery drain starts. If it is performance you after, try uninstalling some of your bloatware by disabling it from Application Manager. Root will not speed up the note 2 much at all. Another thing to consider is disabling the animations in developer options.

Should I root?

Hi guys,
I have samsung note 2 N7100
Android version 4.1.2
I am just looking around and I see loads of stuff about rooting, I came from Apple iPhones coz they are **** now lol and i have jailbroken all my devices. Had my note 2 for few months now but I am worried if i root it I will loose my warranty and might mess up my phone....
I seen the tutorials and it looks really easy but lets say down the line I want to un-root my device, could I leave no trace of the device being rooted?
I had to replace my old note 2 and it was rooted i managed to un root it but the benefit was that I work in the phone shop and I replaced it.
SHOULD I ROOT THE DEVICE?
WHAT BENEFITS WILL I GET?
Cheers guy
p.s. love the community here!
Hi,
Even without root, the Note 2 is still beast.
But with all these customizations, tweaks, improvement going on in the development threads, it's a GO.
Plus, you can unroot easily anytime you have a computer.
Cheers!
First of all! Welcome to the family
Well here's what! Rooting your device is basically allowing your phone to run apps and do special operations that it cannot normally do and also flash custom roms. If anyone else can help with a reply that will be awesome. Just go through the step by step process in either this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1896696 or this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1923956.
For more understanding, watch videos on youtube on the terms: rooting, custom Rom and custom recovery. If anyone can help it would be appreciated!

Well it's upto you. You'd get a HELL lot more of options with a rooted devices than unrooted. Personally, I find absolutely no reason not to root, and it would be such a waste to not unlock the full potential of this beast. It's an awesome device as it is, but it's even awesome-er when your root

It's easy to remove all evidence of rooting if you ever need to. Still I don't think you should rush into it if your uncertain. There are benefits I've gained from rooting though nothing I couldn't live without. To some extent I've been rooting for so long it's just a habit now, I'm just used to having it, but even if I didn't have it on this phone I'd be happy with it.

If you know valid reason to root your device then root it, don't rush for fun or experiments. when you find some stuffs needs root that is must for you then go and root, but read couple of times before it.

Me neither. However it's a fact that a small number of units shipped will develop a fault. If you're going to put big money into a phone line the Note 2 then it's not unnatural to want assurance that you are going to have protection if you are one of the unlucky ones.

Warranty is always a question of time.
The advantage of rooting is difficult to explain to everyone who is doubting about that.
For me rooting is something that should not be necessary.
There are many users that will never use root access even when it is available.
But there are thoughts that root access will lead to problems or misuse.
For me root access is usefull in some cases. For example to install Whatsapp on tablets with wifi-only.
Not a question of advantages and disadvantages of Root OR how it is helpful
I mean to say You can claim warranty even you have device rooted with flash counter 0.
2 main reasons for me :
- Blocking ads
- backing up my entire phone.
You can't do that without root.
Now that my phone is rooted i've done other changes like installing the aosp camera to use photosphere and CWM to backup and install zip easier.
But I keep stock rom with stock kernel, with this phone there is no need to change it to my mind.
With root you can put any tiers application in the multi windows right?
You can also disable bloatware or freeze them with greenify.
The only thing is missing with is the undervolt settings. That's why I'm already in custom kernel/ROM.
But when 4.2.2 goes out I'll certainly go back stock ROM which i hope, will increase battery life.

Not in the good ole United States of America (but there is more too this?)
If you purchase a Samsung Galaxy Note II (or any other phone) from a Authorized Dealer, it comes with one year warranty and guarteneed warranty per terms of that dealers contract. If you unlock/root/flash, whatever, you break that contract because of something YOU did, not the Authorized Dealer, therefore, they are not responsible for it, YOU are.
Now, as someone that has unlocked/rooted/flashed MANY phones over the years, every set of instructions I have every read.....1. Explains the above first. 2. Immediately explains to read ALL the instructions first and understand them before you attempt anything. 3. Explains THEY are not responsible if you brick your phone. 4. They always give detailed instructions (or link to them) a. How to put it back to stock and b. Lastly, DO NOT TAKE PHONE BACK TO DEALER ROOTED!!!
Now, with that said, I (we) in America have T.E.P. (Total Equiptment Protection) that I pay $11.00USD a month. This insurance is in case I lose my phone, its stolen, I drop in bathtub, run over with car.............I pay a deductible ($150.00USD I think) and they give me a new phone.
Now, these are two different things. During the initial warranty period, If I have SDS, I take it back to Authorized Dealer, fix my s**t! After Warranty, period, I send it back to insurance company, pay deductible, and either they send you a new one OR send you a agreed upon compatable device!
Cheers!!!
For me rooting was a must for directory bind. As has been said blocking ads is essential greenify good and the increase Volume mod was also a god send.
However on the downside I've lost sky go.
I rooted my Samsung day 2 and wouldn't turn back. Iv undervolted getting 2 days out of my battery. Root is awesome.

Can I root and keep everything stock and get ota updates? That would be perfect because I really dislike custom roms. I've got the 4G version.

[Q] Rooting and ROM

Hello, this is the first time posting on this forum and relatively new on the android platform after jumping ship from blackberry. So, i have afew questions i hope you guys can help me with.
1. I heard/read alot regarding rooting to bring out the full potential of an android(s4) phone. What is the full advantage of rooting my phone? How does granting administrative access affect my phone performance?
2. I often see the jargon of bloatware on this forum, what does it exactly mean?
3. What is the function of ROM?
Sorry if these qns are repeated, please direct me to the answer if it is already present in the forum. thanks

Rooting your phone gives you access to do anything you want ie (Apps 2 sd) that the phone dosent permit you to do.
A ROM is just a different feel, and its a faster alternative in upgrading your android ios. (S4 has touchwiz, can change it to Htc Sense)
Bloatware is a bunch of unnecessary apps that Carriers know youll never use but have it just cause. Its annoying and it takes up space. Rooting allows you to delete these apps, cause if its not you wont be able to remove it.
I hope this helped, ask again if you have any more questions.

I was wondering if there is a sort of rooting guide for dummies out there. I want to root my phone to get rid of some of the bloatware that I will never use, and also to delete the annoying start up and shut down sounds. Other than that, I'm happy with Touchwiz so far, but I suppose adding custom themes would be fun.
I rooted my last phone (Samsung Vibrant) over 2yrs ago and don't remember how I did it. I know I installed a custom ROM, but don't remember how to do that either. I remember following a really good guide with pictures and step by step instructions though. It's early days yet with the S4, but I really hope someone will do the same kind of guide because it's very helpful for those of us who like to customize but don't have the time or knowledge to seriously get into it. When I look at some of the threads on rooting it just seems like a foreign language to me!

Thanks I looked at that and it seems straightforward, but I'm concerned about what to do after the actual root. Things like how to back the phone up in case I mess it up, how to delete things, how to add things. Also I find a lot of the terminology confusing... not quite sure what all the acronyms stand for either, like ODIN or CWM, or what each thing does exactly. This is the kind of thread which would be totally useful: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028 (this one is for the Vibrant though, so I think a lot of it would be different on a different device?)
As far as the kernel... as far as I know nothing has been updated. I got the phone on the first day it came out so I'm assuming it doesn't have the latest kernel. How would you find out? Not even sure what the kernel is or what it does :\ I would like to find out though!
^^^then you might be on an earlier kernel version anyway trying to root by motochopper method won't brick your device even if it doesn't go successful so no worries.
ODIN is the same software that service centres use to revive your bricked device - as a matter of fact with Samsung drivers, a usb cable and stock rom downloaded from online sources like sammobile, you can revert almost any instances of soft brick. Simply saying ODIN will flash back factory/stock rom anfd make your device as it was when you bought it. And yeah flashing via ODIN and all are more or less same procedure for all Samsung devices
Cwm is a custom recovery. If you don't know what recovery means it might be worth googling for better understanding the concept as even my knowledge is limited and my explanations might fall short of your expectations

with regards to rooting my s4 which is running on 4.2.2 jellybean, does motochopper actually brick my phone? In addition, can i root my phone to remove the bloatwares and afterwhich, unroot my phone again, with all the bloatwares already permanently removed? Is it possible to download the full list of softwares of the s4 online such that if i accidentally remove an important software, i will be able to restore it. As I am someone who is not into very much customization and over-clocking, i believe i dont need my phone rooted for custom ROM right? I can use stock ROM when my phone is unrooted and clear of bloatware?

Steps
#1. Locate GS4 box, place phone inside box.
#2. Return to store and get iPhone.
Serious tho. Best thing you can do is READ. SEARCH and READ. SEARCH and READ.
If you are unsure about something, READ again. Most questions have already been asked and answered.
If you find yourself lost......SEARCH and READ. Believe me this is this most useful advice you will ever get here.
Stuff is so easy now compared to when android 1st started. I remember rooting my G1 on a terminal prompt and installing recovery with wicked long commands. Now everything is automated and the hardest (NOT) part is reading the step by step instructions provided on almost every mod and tweak.
Welcome and goodluck !

Cant tell you whats easiest since I havent tried them all, but i used chainfires root method here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2294005
and then used the goomanager app to install TWRP recovery.
after rooting you basically have full access to your phone and get to flash custom roms which all have different benefits, along with being able to use powerful apps that need root access. Titanium backup is a must have also.
using the above method I got everything including a rom installed in under 20 min on my first try..

Find what baseband you are using.. Settings->About Phone... It will either be M919UVUAMDB or M919UVUAMDL. Once you have determined which baseband version you are running, try typing the last 3 letters of the baseband version (MDB or MDL) and the word "root" into the search box in the Q&A section. Read the 1st page or two of a few of the posts until you ascertain which rooting method is the correct one to use. Once you determine what method to use, you can browse/search the General section and/or Development sections for whichever rooting method you decide. Read the first post to get an idea of how to do it, then root. It is not complicated as, aside from the downloading part, each of the what... 4 root methods for the S4 are pretty much point and click..
As far as the "why," I'm fairly confident that in the fairly detailed search outline I laid out will be answers to why people root and things you can do once rooted. May not be listed as "You can do this, this, this, and this." In fact, probably be more like "I want to do *something*. Do I need root?" -> Answer: "Yes."
