Question about sprint/google - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

If sprint handed over the binaries to Google for the gnex why are updates taking so long?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

Be glad you're not on Verizon then.
At least 4.2 is now available from Google for the Sprint version, who knows when Verizon users will get theirs.

[Q] galaxy nexus updates if imported

If I import it and lets say there was an update tomorrow or in the future how would I get the update since its unlocked and its not branded. I know there straight from Google but how do they push the update if I were to activate it on T-Mobile? someone please tell me. How does this go about for this phone
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
It will just be automatically updated. I'm in the u.s. on T-Mobile also and when the nexus one came out people from all over the world exported and they all received the updates at the same time. It does matter what country, network speed or if you are on wifi.

I learned this from the old nexus one forum that Google used to have.

Your device periodically checks in with Google's servers. It matters not what carrier you are on. Updates are sent out based on IMEI.

Switching Carriers over some launch availability issues? Devices are out there now in pretty decent numveds , Best Buy is selling them over the counter today as well.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
I have t-mobile, but if I had att I wouldn't switch just because of handset availability.
If you are out of contract you should weigh the pros and cons of each in terms of coverage in your area, pricing of comparable plans to satisfy your needs, and THEN device selection.
Plus if you wait a lil longer you can maybe get your hands on the red version!
You realise you can get the AT&T GS3 overnighted to you. You just have to call up and ask for one.
I have a new line with the one x and I'm within my 30 days maybe I'll just see if bb has them. I would switch carriers based on horrible service that att has

I wouldn't switch.. far as I know ( and correct me if I'm wrong ) the T-Mobile version of the SGSIII does NOT have LTE !! To me, that would be a waste.

It has badass hspa+ (42mbps) though which can just as fast as lte depending on location. And it doesnt kill battery like lte, so id say the tmo version is a great option..

LOL, Best Buy is not selling AT&T Galaxy S3's over the counter! I dont know where you have heard that, but you definitely haven't been following either of the 2 Official Best Buy Galaxy S3 threads.
If Best Buy does have them in stock for AT&T, which is a HUGE IF, they are saying they cannot sell them because AT&T has not announced an official release date/launch date. I know, that makes not sense and is a huge lie, but that is what they are saying.
So NO, Best Buy is not selling AT&T Galaxy S3's over the counter.

That doesn't make sense. That CS rep is an idiot, and has no idea when the OTA is coming.
No one here knows either. It's gonna be a couple months, sorry. Nexus devices do get direct OTAs, except when you have a CDMA model and the carrier has to approve the update first. Then it takes a couple months.
That seems kinda pointless to have a nexus device if it is carrier affiliated that's the point of quick otas.. is anyone building jb from source or compiling from GSM devices thanks

Of course they are, because the GSM one already has source and OTAs. But you don't have a GSM device...
There are source ROMs for the Sprint one too, but they don't have updated radios, because the Sprint device isn't fully supported in AOSP at the moment.

The idea of a nexus is direct ota's like you stated, but you have one problem. Your nexus is branded with a carrier, so you are at the mercy of the carrier and not Google.

Who's more stupid? The one that paid way more than 200$ for a carrier branded "LTE" crapware bloated CDMA, nexus, with the most inconvenienced extra fees and plans, or the one that purchased a GSM HSPA+ unlucked direct from Google for 350$ if you're gonna call some consumers stupid, remember you got 3 fingers pointing at you, from your own hand leaving your index hanging, buddy

I for the most part just dislike the company policies. The service is fine, just a little pricey. Customer service has always left me wanting better, and I personally find the handling of the Galaxy Nexus to be quite the fiasco.

I don't think that "stupid" was directed at GSM or it's users, more just a "stupid" of frustration.

Verizon works almost everywhere, they don't suck at all. Either jump ship n complain about crappy coverage, or install 4.2 yourself

Just to say...
Verizon and sprint updated their galaxy nexus to 4.1 via OTA months after jellybean came out.
But the key here is that they still kept their promise and we had jelly bean before any other phone on their roster.
Even the hottest phone of the year Galaxy s3 didn't get jellybean till this week.(Verizon still waiting)
Verizon held up their end. You were the first to get jelly bean and unless the nexus 4 comes to Verizon, you will be the first on Verizon to have 4.2
The new Droid DNA comes with 4.1.2 so you're fine.

Unless Tmo planned for 1.5 years ahead when they launched the Herc, I doubt we have the right hardware. Hopefully it does have support and Tmo did plan for the future but they're keeping it a secret . Because when they build the source for a ROM, they don't take out individual little things for certain devices.

Actually the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S III (SGH-T999) is NOT capable of it period. I have one. But i did read rumors that they may be making another S3, one with the exact same specs, but adding an LTE capable chip. T-Mobile went on the cheap side with their S3 and used the same chip as the ATT and other variants, but cut out the LTE capabilities. Kinda dumb but hey im not the CEO. lol.
But you are right, the Note 2 just needs a firmware update to enable LTE, also, the only other phone capable of T-Mobile LTE is the Windows Phone 8X.
