*Do I have to unlock my ATT Note2 Sim card before rooting it if I plan on staying with ATT?
*Does the ATT version have a locked boot loader and if so, do I need to do anything to it before using
CF-Auto-Root
*To use CF-Auto-Root to do a 'stock' root (no custom rom) do I need to have the usb debugging & allow
unknown sources options enabled when I do it?
* Are the Samsung drivers that I see everyone talking about needing in order to root installed when I
install the Kies program on my computer?
* Do I need to make and save a backup before or after I do the 'stock' root. If I need to do it before how
is the best way to do it? I plan on installing TWRP after I root, so I assume I can use it to make a
backup after root or maybe use Titanium BU?
* What is the difference between TWRP and Titanium? I plan on experimenting with Custom ROMs if
things go well and I want a good backup if something goes wrong?
Thanks for your help and advice

no you do not have to unlock sim before root
No bootloader
You might need the drivers if you are having problems connecting. I believe. Somebody else can correct me on this if I am wrong.
I have not used cf auto root. I just flashed the tar file via odin on Windows. Then I installed goo manager from the market and installed twrp.
somebody else will answer the other questions

I have a GSM phone with stock 4.1.1 (with a latency patch).
My phone is unlocked, but not rooted.
I have CWM installed
If I installed a new Kernel my questions are:
1) Do I lose my data/apps and need to do a backup?
2) How do I go back to stock kernel?
Seems simple and probably answered before, but I was unable to find a thread that was simple and clear to follow.
Thanks
You'll need to get root privileges to flash and use a new kernel and be able to customize etc. You can flash a ROM with su binaries already installed or you can just do it manually. You don't need to wipe when flashing a kernel though. You should root though because not much reason to unlock bootloader and not gain root access.
Edit: once you gain root install titanium bu or another app to backup apps and data and you can get a flashable stock kernel from your device's dev forum. But you wont lose apps and data when flashing a kernel but I always make a nandroid in case something goes wrong.

1. you dont lose any data. just flash the kernel without wiping anything.
2. either flash the stock kernel/boot.img or reflash the stock rom.

you dont need root to flash anything if you have a custom recovery installed. that said, you will need root to use the apps that control the cpu speed/tweaks. you can always flash a kernel, boot it, and use it at its default settings without root.

Thank you I should have clarified that you could flash and use default settings. There's just no fun though in unlocking and installing a custom recovery if you aren't able to tweak and customize everything to tour liking

Hi,
So there seem to be quite a few tools and methods out there with which you can root your phone, but what if I really only want to root it and nothing else; my only goal is to use apps that require root access.
I've got Android 4.1.1, but I suppose it shouldn't matter that much. Will I be able to update to a newer version with root access though?
Forgot to add:
What will I need to back up and how do I transfer my settings and contacts? I don't care much for lost apps since I don't have many.
Unlock the bootloader and flash a custom recovery. After that you make a nandroid backup and then install the superuser root script to give root acces in the rom.
Flash back the stock recovery and you are able to receive and install official ota's.
Is this all possible with this tool?
Now I don't want to act dumb or seem inept, but could you or someone else give me a more detailed description, maybe with a link or two?
Yes you can use that tool
Did you see my edit to the first post?
>>What will I need to back up and how do I transfer my settings and contacts? I don't care much for lost apps since I don't have many.
Can you tell me why I need to flash a custom recovery? Can't I 'just' root my phone as is and then leave it like that- rooted of course?
You can use an app called carbon to make a backup. You need a custom recovery to install the super user script. A stock one is not capable if doing that. And you don't root a phone. Only its software !
With hassoons tool, how do I flash the stock ROM back on it? I can see no option in his thread...
The stock nandroid backup needs to be installed via the custom recovery. Not with hassons tool kit. You can in that case only flash back the stock boot.img from the stock backup.
Hi, I decided I wanted to go through with my plans to root the phone and already run into a problem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43066305&posted=1#post43066305
Most recentpost...
EDIT: Selected Power down on the phone because I was getting impatient and paranoid and then disconnected the phone. Everything seems fine so far. I closed the console and the message "Get Token ID.." popped up and then the console reopened, apparently searching for the phone... -_-
Oh well, maybe next time. Right now I want to take a break/try something else.
Can someone tell me why Windows always trys to install new drivers even when they already are installed? Happened when I used the programm- updating drivers blabla...
I'll try again here...
Just a question:
Can I definitely receive official android/sense/hwatever ota updates but still keep the root access?
What i've gathered so far is that I need to use hassoons tool and how to guide, but only the first post.
After that I will have a rooted stock ROM with ClockworkMod recovery, right?
Then I should do a nandroid backup WITH CWM (how is this done exactly? hold volume down +power button, then recovery?)
What will be backed up with the nandroid backup? How big will this be roughly and can I/should I put it on PC to free up some space?
Regardless from this backup, I only need the recovery.img, which in my case will be MY personal backed up STOCK recovery.img,is that correct?
How do I flash my stock recovery?
Edit:
Once I have the stock recovery again, will my phone still have root access? Is everything from then on -stock- except for root access?
Hi, guys...I just unrooted, factory restored, and used flashtool to fully restore my sprint lgls990 following some connectivity issues. My phone is currently on android 4.4.2.
I am seeking some advice/help on basically end-to-end help. Initially, I used stump to root my phone and then installed xposed and a few other items.
What I want to do now is run the easiest root possible, create a backup, and then install a custom rom. Specifically, I'd like to use CM10 CM11: Royal Blue Cobalt from the Play Store.
I have a strong concern about rom stability, though. I want/need lte data, wifi, phone, playstore, maps, and the like, but don't want to sprint bloatware crap. Is that what a custom ROM does, keep the essentials and dump the carrier crap?
So:
I think using stump will be the easiest root process.
I have read lots about twrp, but haven't found very good instructions for a noob like me, can anyone point me to "the" thread for installing and using twrp?
Where do I find the rom so I can use the theme I have noted above?
Basically, I'm looking for a roadmap for the threads I'll need to accomplish this.
Thanks in advance for helping this noob...
Bump for a little help, please...
Is there a one-stop shop for rooting, backing up, and installing a custom ROM?
Ok - re-used stump root to re-root my phone. Dl'd root checker to confirm and it confirmed rooted. Though root checker says to dl supersu to verify root, I didn't initially. Subsequently, dl'd supersu, granted root checker access, and confirmed root.
Now I wonder if I back up now or if I should have backed up before root? Answer: Seems that I cannot make a nandroid backup without recovery and to have recovery my boot loader needs to be unlocked, er rooted, right?
Edit:
Seems unlocking the boot loader is different than rooting the phone.
I suppose I can just use TWRP to back up the device?
Edit 2:
Okay, using this site - http://lg-g3.wonderhowto.com/how-to/unlock-bootloader-install-custom-recovery-lg-g3-0157830/ - I dl'd flashify, dl'd my ls990 img to the phone via the guide and will install next.
Edit 3:
Successfully installed the lg ls990 .img via Flashify; re-booted into twrp; and successfully created a backup. Then I connected the g3 to my pc and moved the very large backup file to my pc.
Edit 4:
I didn't include EFS in the back up...problem? No problem, just did another backup and chose all options available.
Now on to installing a cm rom...
Edit 5:
Looking for a CM 11 rom for my ls990...found one but the bluetooth doesn't work - http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-lg-g3/orig-development/rom-cyanogenmod-11-ls990-t2941164? Dafuq?
Edit 6:
Done for the night...no custom ROM. I thought most of the CM 11s would be sorted out by now, but alas, not so.
I'd really like to get a fully customized theme on this phone and thought going to CM 11 would get me there...
So I'm going to be following this persons guide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyJq_Ta8Y9Y&list=WL&index=8 to root (I wanna make sure I don't brick it).
Is there a way to root my phone, use titanium backup and then unlock bootloader and stuff without losing my data?
I was then going to install this custom ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nex...-dirty-unicorns-6-0-1-bullhead-03-01-t3326395
Question is, does the kernel auto install or do I need to click the github, download as ZIP and flash it ?
Kind of don't want to brick my phone as things have sort of changed.
Have rooted 3 phones before but now things have changed. The kernels auto installed for me, now I don't know.
So, I am pretty much stuck with Sprint, so if I want to upgrade my HTC 10 I am going to have to get a phone through them.
First of all, Sprint dosen't block you from using HTC's root method on their phones, do they?
And also, I read that using HTC's method now will only invalidate part of your warranty, but not all of it? I couldn't find any confirmation on this, most were from forum posts from years ago. I especially would like to know about physical defects or issues such as Uh Oh protection still applying if you are rooted.
And finally, once I root my phone, would I then have root access on the installed stock rom, or would I have to re-flash it with a custom rom that was made for root access?
No, Sprint doesn't block you from using HTC Dev. As far as warranty, I haven't read up on it recently but it's my understanding that unlocking the bootloader does not invalidate the warranty. To answer your last question, you can simply install SuperSU to gain root access without having to install a custom ROM.
Sent from my HTC 10
It has been a while since I used it, is SuperSU the only thing that would be able to grant root access, or is it some manager that can allow or deny other apps root access? I mainly want to be able to use backup apps with the root access that will be able to backup everything on my internal storage, right now even adb backup can't backup everything on my non-rooted M8, and I am looking to replace that phone anyway.
Anyone? I want to make sure that I would be able to use Titanium Backup to backup everything and be able to have full access in file managers. Is all I would need to do after using the HTC Dev unlock be to install the SuperSU app and not have to flash a custom rom?

You would need to use HTC Dev unlock, install TWRP, and then install SuperSU. You do not need to install a custom ROM.
