If you need more info, please tell me how to get it to you. I'm a noob @ mobile mod stuff...
Today January 17, 2013 my Phone said I had an OTA update, it will not tell me what the update is.
Is this the 4.0 update?
Will this remove my root?
Is it true this update will remove flash player?
how long have you had your phone? 2.3.x is old, the t989 got has been on 4.0.x for some time now (4.04 is the current factory rom), you probably have a few updates to do!
SGH-T989 FW2.3.6 OTA update
I believe We got our phones June 2012. They came with Uvlke1 I think then updated to UVLDE around November 2012...
I wouldnt mind 4.x.x, You can use Xbox360 SmartGlass.
Does Adobe Flash Player matter anymore?
Do I need to unroot to update ota or just click start?
Will updating remove my root SU?
How hard is it to ReRoot when i've finished updating?

Yes
No, as long as u didn't debloat
Not the supersu app, but u will lose root, have to reflash in cwm
Its not
I clicked it.... smh, it was some 5 second update. have no clue what it did...
So now I did my wifes phones with kies (unrooted) all went well, update it to 4.0.4 ....
What is debloat?
Debloat if I'm not wrong. Its when they take all the T-Mobile things out that you don't actually need in the phone.

My wife is in the sane boat as you. She's pure stock. Has had it since the free phone sale last year in T-Mobile. She is still on your firmware. GB 2.3.6 with the T989UVLDG baseband. She's had 3 OTAs since shes had it but remains on GB. Don't understand why. Her last OTA was the 17th as well. No idea what it was for since it took the longest of the 3 and left her on GB.

So I recently found out I'm unable to install OTA Android updates to my phone if it's rooted.
So what can I do once ICS is released for the GS2? Will there be a download online that I can just flash with ODIN? Or are people going to be forced to unroot if they want the official ICS stock?
Most likely samfirmware aka sammobile will release an odin .tar, so you'll be good to go with odin.

That's not true. You will be unable to install OTA patch-style updates if you have modified one of the files being patched. If you rooted with Auto Root and that's all you did, you will be able to install OTA patch-style updates even without unrooting (though the update will disable root)

I'm sure there will be an ODIN update within a few days or maybe even the same day. You can also flash EK02 and let the OTA update upgrade you (or if you've just rooted with Auto Root, just let the OTA update run), though you are probably better off waiting for an update from XDA, because the updates from here will attempt to keep your rooting and upgrade options as open as possible.
I'll also probably have an OTA compliance check for the next official update so you can tell immediately which files are not in compliance with what the update expects. I have one for EG30 to EK02 as part of the Auto Root package, so it would be similar in functionality.
First rule: Never take an OTA update if you care about rooting.
Any file made available from sprint or samsung will have a rooted/safe version posted in the dev section within a few hours of release.
I know samsung is pretty nice to us rooters but you never know when that might change.

Is there a way to block OTAs? I'm running Calkulin's 2.8 if that matters.

There is a thread on blocking them in the wiki, provided here for your ease.

If you are worried about the OTA messing something up, it'll download and ask to install, but if you've made any changes to your ROM, including installing CWM, then it will fail the integrity check and won't install, so nothing will change.
I don't understand the OP's dilemma. Just wait a couple of hours after the OTA update and get a rooted version of the update... no problem!
It won't be out for a few more months anyways. It isn't even being tested yet. I doubt an initial build is even at Samsung. They are working on the the Galaxy S2 right now(the GSM overseas version). And, I am sure Sprint will sell some other phone with ICS stock before they update ours.
Even though I'll probably be on to a new phone by the time the Inc 2 receives its OTA ICS update, I nevertheless want to be able to upgrade to it when it arrives. My question is, will the nandroid backup I have (Android version 2.3.3 with superuser but none of the bloat removed) be able to receive it? Or will I need to go through the whole process of unrooting and restoring 2.3.4 first?

you wouldnt want to take the ota regardless as it will likely block root and might bring an hboot that cannot be reverted from
id imagine we d get a leak of the ota ahead of time or just wait for a dev to make an update.zip version of it once its pulled from the servers or a phone
I also had a question about the OTA update. I HTC unlocked and rooted with SU and CWM recovery. I do have some of the bloated apps uninstalled with Titanium Backup. As soon as I heard that the upgrade for ICS was coming out, I flashed the stock recovery from the most recent RUU. Does anyone forsee any problems recieving the ICS OTA with this setup?
Well, not sure I would have done it that way... with the stock recovery you lose CWM's capabilities waiting for Vzw to release the ICS upgrade, and that could take months and months. Additionally, if you accept the ICS OTA my guess is that you'll lose root as well, and be stuck with Vzw's typical bloatware until you re-root. And we don't know if the new OTA will be immediately re-rootable. Some of the previous upgrades have required reverting to earlier versions.
As nitsuj17 remarks a few posts earlier, I would imagine that once the ICS upgrade for the Dinc2 is released, somebody will quickly get hold of it and post up a version for us rooted folks and we can just flash it from CWM. And use TB or AntTek App manager or whatever tool is your favorite to freeze or delete the Vzw crap. That's what I'm planning to do...
I got my SG3 like two weeks ago, I rooted it, and today I get an OTA update being pushed.
Is this Jellybean or some other type of update?
my current android version is: 4.0.4
Baseband version; L710VPLG2
Anybody else getting this OTA?
It just happened today.

Now just a ics update most every one has. It's LG8 now instead of LG2.
Sent from Pluto.
If you're still running stock ROM it's likely LG8. Jellybean still hasn't been officially announced for our device yet.
Shiza! Got me excited for nothing...:cyclops:

Question: I am rooted and have CWM recovery. If I were to install this OTA what would happen? Lose root? Loose custom recovery?
how do I deal with the OTA
I am new this. Been rooted for a couple of months. Update popped up just like the other user. I know I cannot install with CWM and I am not currently interested with any roms, waiting for jelly bean. I have the same model and set up he does. I guess I need the L8.
Can i remove the pop up and just wait for a few more months?
Could that create performance issues?
I don't feel like updating and reinstalling everything if I don't have to. Thanks in advance.

My wife just got this update notification. No idea what version it is, but curious if it will break root. If so, anyone know if this version is also rootable?
i followed the unroot galaxy s3 thread because i accidentally pressed update when OTA update popped up on my rooted phone.
downloaded the latest android zip and updated with ODIN.
but it doesnt show 4.2 it still shows 4.1.1 android.
im a bit confused.
theres just too much **** available and i lost track of all these build numbers and updates and different programs.
i dont spend much time here anymore after i got rid of the HD2 and now im completely lost.
got other stuff to do cant afford spending 3 hours a day to stay on top of latest repackaged rom release

4.1.1 UVDLJC is the latest official firmware.
oh ok then i thought it was 4.2 for some reason
one more question that i could not understand clearly
once i root the phone again. what specific services do i need to disable to prevent the automatic OTA updates?
i disabled one service related to update but didnt see any others.
and once rooted. do i have to unroot it in order to use odin and manually install OTA update that i downloaded?
im not planning to use custom roms( spent toomuch time making them wrk on HD2 and done with that for good)
jsut stock tmobile roms work fine for me.
thanks for quick reply i was about to try flashing again since i thought that it was supposed to be 4.2 version

You don't have to do anything with ota. When next one comes out you can unroot and install the ota as long as you hav stock recovery. If you have custom recivery you can always update with Samsung kies but you would need to reroot the new ROM. Or just flash a ROM through Odin.

There's a new OTA update available for the Galaxy S4 SGH-M919V variant from Wind Mobile, Eastlink, Videotron in Canada.
This is the update that finally brings the much awaited Apps2SD feature to our phones. It also includes the following enhancements:
- Some new icons in the settings
- Additional 'Smart Pause' button in quick settings
- Stability improvements
- Upgrades the camera firmware.
- Storage shown as 16GB now, but 6.38 GB is occupied by System memory under 'Misc'.
Firmware version: M919VVLUAMG1
So its official. TMo is the last carrier on Earth to get this update.

Unfortunately, it appears to be the case as of now. I really can't imagine it being that far off now. Since, these versions are identical!

The OTA will fail to update if you're rooted.
I had to Odin back to stock and then apply the OTA update.
So yes, the update will break root.
I haven't tried to root it since, so I can't report any progress there.

It failed because it said your device is modified and prevent you from updating or it failed in the middle of updating?
tmobile needs to speed up this apps to sd update.....
I love how they are trying to hide the space the system uses under miscellaneous. This might trick people into not complaining about having more available disk space. I've heard good things about this update... Just want it already.
Still lovin' Tmo more than Sprint!!! 15-26mb beats 100k all day long. And I enjoy being able turn the camera sound off without rooting.

man, i got excited for a minute when i read new firmware update.
T-Mobile is usually quick to send out updates, I wonder why it's taking them long to release this one? The S3 got the JB update pretty quick if I'm not mistaken.

you can blame me for the update not being released and it wont be released for months, according to my sources. I talked to t mobile about all the bugs they have, so they said fine, we will do everything never to give bugs again, hence a long update period...It was probably my phone calls that lead to this wait

You son of a ..... ;__; :crying:
I realize it's always an agonizing wait to get your hands on the newest firmware. However, there's a bright side to it. You all are still able to root and tinker with your devices.
I haven't been able to root the newest firmware using motochopper and am hesitant to try CF-Autoroot because in the case it does trip the flash counter and I loose root, I won't be able to reset it.
So, by the time tmobile sends out the update, there hopefully is a way to root.

Next time if your already rooted you can grab the app voodoo OTA Rootkeeper, which should be able to protect and reapply root after an update.

Thanks for that tip. However, I doubt it would've worked because since I was rooted, the update failed to complete installing around 25%. So, I had to odin back to stock and then apply the OTA. Probably something to do with a locked bootloader.

Yeah, the phone status was 'Official'. You'd have to be in order to get OTA updates/notifications.
Initially upon rooting, the status changed to 'Custom', But I followed the guide below to revert it to 'Official' while retaining root.

Nothing against Canada but can't believe they got an update before the U.S. model.
