[Q] Loss of sms and call ability - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I have a sporadic problem (every few days) where I lose the ability to send or receive sms and calls. The only way I find out about is when my family emails me to ask why I am not responding to them. All looks right on the phone (have bars of service) but no sms or calls can be done until I reboot the phone. I was hoping upgrading to Jelly Bean might help but it hasn't.
Phone is stock, not rooted. I still have warranty on the phone but am worried that if I return it to AT&T, they will power it up and it will work flawlessly. I don't want to be charged for a new phone.
Any ideas?

guys,
it is an ATT issue,
here is a temp solution for a fix:
1) With phone on, take off back cover and press your SIM card so it releases from the spring. It won't come all the way out as it's blocked by the battery. This seems fine - I didn't bother trying to force it out as I didn't want to break anything...
2) Once you see the message that the SIM card is removed, go to the dialer and dial *#2263#
3) You should see a menu with band selections. The current setting is "Automatic". If you switch to "GSM All", you will be EDGE (2G). If you switch to "WCDMA All", you will be on HSPA+ (3G, though AT&T and others call it 4G).
4) Press the SIM card back into place until it clicks. For whatever reason the phone will not recognize it until you reboot. Upon reboot you should see your new setting in effect

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S3 - AT&T Can only Send/Receive SMS while on a call

Hello!
This morning I suddenly began getting a failed message any time I attempted to send an SMS message. There doesn't appear to be any error code or anything, just an exclamation point next to the message which triggers a new attempt if i touch it.
I assumed it was a passing network error and ignored it for awhile. During my last break at work I realized that still could not send SMS, so I powered my phone off and back on to no avail. I called AT&T tech support, thinking it may have been a provisioning or switch error, they sent me an SMS which came through fine, and I sent a few test SMS while on the line with them which also went through perfectly.
After getting off of the phone with AT&T I discovered my SMS was not working again. Messing around with it later I learned that I can send and receive SMS normally while on a call, and can send MMS messages regardless, but am unable to receive MMS unless I'm on a call. Data is working fine (both AT&T and WiFi) and I can make and receive calls normally.
When I got home from work I called AT&T again. They had no suggestions, but told me they could not help me troubleshoot while I was on the phone needing troubleshooting (which makes perfect sense, but was the only phone available at the time.)
I have since re-flashed my phone to the official factory rom and done a reset to factory settings/deleted all data by following this tutorial here: (XDA won't allow me to link the video, but youtube user appdroid seven, video title "How To Unroot & Factory Reset At&t Samsung Galaxy S III I747", I fouind the video in the thread titled "[ReF} ALL IN ONE NOOBS VIDEO* GUIDES TO ROOT | FLASH | & MORE [Mods this goes in ATT]" post four.)
I am still having the same issue, but am running out of ideas on how to fix it... any help would be greatly appreciated.
I had the same problem. I just figured out how to fix it. Worked on my friends phone too. Both S3s.
I found the below on another site.

I switched to WCDMA ALL... then rebooted. This put it on HSPA only. Then I did the above again and selected automatic and rebooted. LTE came back online and the SMS worked again. No problems since. Hope this helps.

I just got this problem after the AT&T update got pushed to my phone yesterday. I followed the steps above, trying to text between each switch of the radios. I found that I could text on "WCDMA All" but not "LTE All". Going to "Automatic" gave me LTE radio back, but MMS/SMS failed to work. However, text did work if I was on a phone call! This got me thinking about the APN settings and whether they were right. Sure enough, AT&T messed with "APN type" on the latest upgrade. It should read "default, mms, supl, hipri" but instead read "default, mms, supl". I created a new APN with the correct APN type, reset the radio to "Automatic" as per the instructions above, and rebooted. I now have LTE and MMS/SMS back!
I hope that this helps!
Now, how do I go about billing AT&T for my lost time?

[Q] LTE service issue on Galaxy S4 model i545 [PLEASE MOVE]

EDIT: Sorry for posting in the wrong section, can a mod please move this thread?
Hi all,
I have a question regarding my Verizon Galaxy S4 i545 model. I purchased the phone unlocked out of the States, and now have it in Canada partially working on my carrier, SaskTel. The phone seems to work fairly well, except I'm having some issues with LTE/4G service.
Basically, if I set my network mode to "LTE/CDMA" I get a perfect LTE connection, fast speeds and it works well. However, when LTE is enabled, I'm unable to send/receive any type of text message, and I'm unable to make phone calls as well. The phone itself displays that I have no service, but I can still use LTE. I phoned up my carrier to see if they could help me figure the issue out, and they said it could be because Verizon tends to complete all phone calls, and send all texts over LTE. The support rep explained that with SaskTel, phones usually drop down to 3G connectivity for a few moments when sending texts, or making a phone call, because SaskTel does phone calls and texts over 3G.
However, if I set my network mode to "GSM/UMTS" I receive a data connection through HPSA+, and can text and phone people as well. Obviously this isn't an ideal situation, because HPSA+ speeds are quite slow. (1-3Mbps download) I have found a sort of fix to this issue. To temporarily fix it, here's what I do:
-Set network mode to "GSM/UMTS"
-Clear the "Messaging" app cache
-Restart the phone
-Set network mode to "LTE/CDMA"
Then the phone can use LTE and still text and make phone calls. However if it ever loses connection, or if I enable airplane mode, once the phone regains connectivity, I have no service, but can still use LTE data.
Do you guys have any ideas of what might be causing this? I thought it might be a modem issue, but I figured most people here would know more than me on this topic. (this is my first Android device, and I've had it for about four days now)
Here are some things I've tried doing to fix the issue:
-Pop out SIM card and pop it back in
-Test different APN settings for my carrier given to me by my carrier
-Test the phone with a different SIM card from the same carrier
-Reset phone to factory defaults
None of these made any difference at all to the issue, and it seems that my "temporary fix" seems to be the only way to fix this issue. Any advice on this issue would be appreciated!

Can not connect to 4G/3G.

Hello there, I'm in need of your help again.
My SGH-M919 has a problem, it cannot connect to 3G/LTE (Not even EDGE). My carrier uses the 850 mHz band for GSM and 1900 mHz for UMTS, so the phone should be able to use them. The thing is, it doesn't. It only connects to GPRS and the signal is very erratic and weak (Usually 2-3 bars). Sometimes I get SMSs from my carrier saying that I missed like 5 calls when my phone never rang once. I live in a zone with good 3G coverage, so it's not the signal.
I'm currently rooted on Android 4.4.4 (NH7). I already tried selecting "1900 WCDMA" in the *#2263# service menu but that only causes the phone to lose all the signal (And it's a problem to change it back, without signal the service menu doesn't work and I cannot change the Network Mode in Settings).
I've tried to select "WCDMA only" mode before, but my signal just goes to zero (The circle with the slash) before changing back to "LTE/WCDMA/GSM (Auto connect)" automatically.
I also cannot use the Network Operators option. Using "Search now" makes it search for a few seconds before showing the message "Error while searching for networks". The "Select automatically" one shows the message "Unable to connect. Try later" and then connects back to my carrier (Movistar)
My APNs are configured (They did it themselves when I inserted the SIM, but I've configured them manually before). The SIM card works, I tried it in another phone and it got 3G immediately, I also tried another SIM card on the GS4, but the result was the same. Someone told me to upgrade to the latest firmware (NK2) while someone else told me to flash the MDL modem. (Is that even possible? I read something about KNOX blocking all downgrades after 4.3).
Since I couldn't find any direct solution to the problem, I'm recurring to you.
Thanks.
P.S: I didn't change the LTE Band Preference option in the Service Menu because the last time someone messed with it, my IMEI/Baseband went completely nuts, I thought the EFS got corrupted, but they magically appeared everytime I enabled the Airplane Mode (So I was able to select Automatic in the ServiceMenu and they got fixed). Also, I don't live in a LTE area although once during a very strong thunderstorm, I got 4G for a few minutes before going back to G).
*bump*
Any ideas?

I've tried with and without it, it doesn't make a difference anyway.
Does it show you have an ìmei # other than all zeros?
Don't post it just a yes or no.

My IMEI is fine, the phone connects to the carrier network but it stays on GPRS (and the signal is always dropping)

I'll try that later. Will I have to re-root and re-install TWRP after flashing NK2?
I have a similar problem with my M919 on the Tmobile network. Using the *#2263# menu I can not get mine to work on WCDMA (4G) either. I can chose GSM /LTE only and my phone works normally but no 4G signal. If I chose WCDMA I get no signal. I can see it trying to connect and immediately dropping the signal. If I choose any option with WCDMA included it has erratic signal and will lose the signal most of the time when I try to make a call. So basically I have the choices of GSM only or GSM/LTE only. Before I discovered the secret menu I was stuck with GSM only in the phone's settings. This has been going on for months. Tmobile changed my SIM card and it didn't help. I've rooted and unrooted my phone (using autoroot) and even tried different modems (even worse signals) and now am back to stock rooted NK2 firmware and modem. I have given up and decided to get another phone (not an S4). My wife's S3 gets great 4G signals in the same location by the way. I wonder if anyone knows why our phones can't use 4G. I am beginning to think it's a hardware problem but I'm way out of warranty on mine.

Problem with using on ATT

Hey So I'm having some issues after sim unlocking phone;
I sim unlocked my phone and then flashed it back using odin to stock and still having issues.
Issues:
-While it says LTE the device does not seem to be getting actual LTE as doing a speed test revealed about 2-3 mbps
-When calling someone, they can rarely hear me
-When someone calls me I can't answer the call, I swipe to answer and the phone hangs then shows the call screen again and I try to answer the second time it usually disconnects the call
-When I am able to answer the call no audio and the call automatically hangs up after about 5 seconds
I know that the microphones are good as I can make calls using FB Messenger and don't have any issue since it's using the data.
Steps I have done:
-Flashed back to stock
-Factory Reset after Flash
-Manually set network to: AT&T
-Disabled WiFi calling
-Set network to 2g/3g to see if the LTE was causing the issue
....none of this seems to have made any difference in the issue.
Any recommendations, suggestions, in-sight would be great! Wondering if I should just sell this and get an ATT phone or if I can fix the issue.
I had read in some thread that someone had to get a new sim but from what I remember of the thread they weren't seeing anything data or the ability to select a operator. The phone the SIM originally came from was a iPhone 5C if that makes any difference.
This worked for me:
1) Use an "activity launcher" app to launch Device Info com.android.settings.radioinfo (there is one by that name in the Play Store that I use; Alternatively, Nova Launcher has a handy widget function to launch activities.)
2) Once Device Info/Radio Info is open, there is a drop down menu mid-way down the page that allows you to select various combinations. The default is intended for TMOBILE networks.
For AT&T, select "LTE/GSM (Auto)"
3) Reboot the phone
While the Radio Info settings updated to "LTE/GSM (Auto)" did immediately resolve the mobile data issues on AT&T for me, checking your active APN (that's it's using the AT&T Nextgen APN) might be worthwhile as well.
The program I actually tried to do this with was "4G LTE Switcher"; I had used it back with my XT912(Droid Razr Maxx) because it had lots of problems with custom roms and not connecting to the network and I tried those methods:
1. Turn on airplane mode and turn back on to establish connection after power on
2. Turn on airplane mode, power cycle
3. 4g Switch/ Turn data to CDMA only and then back to LTE (when was on verizon)
Things I've noticed:
1. If I'm on wifi the call audio never works even though I have disabled wifi calling
2. If I'm on LTE the call never works and for some reason like the phone doesn't want to switch over to HSPA
3. If I'm on HSPA+ it works more often on incoming calls than outgoing
I got a new sim card from ATT and had them add the IMEI into the system but didn't help at all.
Nougat should be out soon and hoping that I can get it fixed, going to try some rom flashing and CSC flashing to see if I can get a result out of it
I got my s6 edge plus in a trade, i was able to get it unlocked finally and was wondering if there is an unbranded rom that can be installed on the tmobile variant ? I have at&t as well.

A505U can't access Visible network

I've tried everything, so hopefully someone can shine some light into this issue.
I bought a new (unused but from a 3rd party) Samsung Galaxy A50 (A505U) Verizon branded and unlocked. Got a sim card from Visible and went to get it connected. Nothing. WiFi works, everything works, but no cell service.
Here's what I've done (some multiple times)
- reset everything to include network settings, hard reset, etc
- removing the sim, resetting, putting the sim back in. I always get a notification saying the sim card is removed and it goes away when I put the sim back in, so it is recognizing a sim card is in there
- switched sims with another Visible phone/sim and nothing. Both sims worked on other phone but neither worked on this phone
- tried getting into the hidden menus but none of them worked
- talked to Visible tech support which upgraded the issue to the highest level and concluded it's the phone
- Visible believes it's the APN settings but I cannot edit current APNs nor add new ones (grayed out)
- manually add networks, I can see Visible, TMobile, ATT, and some weird numbers, but when I try to connect to Visible it says cannot register on the network, other networks say the sim is not setup for them
- sometimes I get the icon that shows all bars but they're grayed out, sometimes it shows 3-4 bars lit up, sometimes even shows a 4G icon, but mostly the grayed out bars
- sent the phone to Samsung, they tested it and found no faults, guess the hardware is good, ruled that out.
- got into dev options but I'm aware the OEM unlock is not on option on the A505U, not sure if I can change anything else.
I'm out of options. Any other ideas? I think if I can either get into the hidden menus I'll be able to diagnose it better, or if I can somehow change the APN settings I'll be able to set it up. Visible tech support thinks it's the APN, which makes sense to me, but I can't change them.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
I was able to get into the CSC change function, there's not many there, but would changing the CSC help? If so, which should I go to?
I've had a similar issue. Was working fine until the Android 10 update arrived. Since then, it won't work with my total wireless sim card. Tried 3 different sim cards on it, but nothing. Can't add it do anything with the APN, and getting into the phone info hidden menu doesn't help any. I suspect it's a bug in the new firmware or something like that. Works fine with a Verizon SIM though.
Update: Verizon SIM no longer connects to phone. Still works with LTE data. It seems that the CDMA radio quit working with the update to Android 10. Must have been collecting to the Verizon network with VoLTE until it updated the provisioning or something.
So, I finally figured out a workaround for mine that was able to get both data and voice networks to connect while using total wireless, which is an MVNO on the Verizon network. I pretty much narrowed it down to being an issue with the modem not working with CDMA. What I did was download the last Android 9 firmware and flashed just the modem (file starts with CP_) using Odin. After that, I rebooted it and voila! It connected.
Just thought i would give my experience as i just delt with this. i got my 10 update this morning nd let it update and apon a reboot i lost all mobile connection, a signal bar would show for a few seconds looking like it was trying to lock in a signal and it would go back to the ⌀ symbol. i tried flashing the android 9 modem from 2 different updates and neither fixed it. i just decided to order a new phone as i feel its time anyways. my next attempt will be to flash android 9 back using odin then just throw this phone up on craigslist
edit: odin successfully flashed back to android 9 and signal now works again. so if anyone has this issue you can try the method above of just flashing the modem and if that doesnt work you can go back to 9 and restore functionality of verizon mvno's

Visible
samsung a50 not connecting to VZW towers (red pocket)
My phone is doing the exact same thing and while I can appreciate how you resolved the issue it doesn't make much sense to me.
I use Red Pocket for my network. (Which uses Verizon towers - I use the CDMA Sim)
Before this major update to 10 my phone worked flawlessly. Now it won't connect to the network much like you guys have stated in this thread. Mine will connect intermittently for like 3 or 4 min tops and then get kicked off the tower and will actually not show any bars (Circle with a line through it) to show no service for about 10 or so minutes then restart the whole process.
I also have a work phone (2nd phone) that is directly tied to the verizon towers on the verizon network. If I take the sim out of that phone and put it in my samsung a50 the samsung a50 is happy and can make phone calls, send texts, and stays on the vzw towers with no disconnects.
If I take my red pocket sim card and place it in my work phone that phone also works just fine - send messages, make phone calls, and stays on the vzw towers with no disconnects. (work phone = iphoneXR - it's free, sue me)
Even though reverting the modem obviously fixes your issue I do not think that is the actual problem. It also doesn't seem that a third party carrier is being randomly booted off the towers, it seems to be a glitch with third party carriers using third party sims utilizing this new android 10 software that VZW towers do not like.
Which obviously points to an issue with Samsung's latest software not being compatible with third party carriers.
I can't seem to contact Samsung in a direct manner to resolve this issue as they want me to take it to a third party store to have it looked at. I spent 2 and half hours with tech support from red pocket and they came to the conclusion that VZW was doing "upgrades/maintenance" to their towers in my area. (whatever that means.
Any ideas on how I can contact Samsung directly to detail this issue to them? I really do not want to have to root my phone in order to use odin to set my modem back to version 9 as I'm hearing that doing so voids all kinds of implied warranties with the phone and it's only 6 months old.
Appreciate any help that you guys might be able to steer me towards.
Thanks.
Before this major update to 10 my phone worked flawlessly- They Told you the answer, Odin # 9 or if its under warranty take it back Good luck.
My phone (SM-A505U) wasn't even working on visible before android 10.
See my post at the end of this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...official-firmware-t3955727/page2#post83845605
I have that problem too. Where I can download v9. I got the Odin.
