Modems for my Pops - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

So... I've been trying to explain my father what modems do. Things like extending range, increasing speeds, improving battery life, etc etc.
He won't listen because he doesn't believe me. I've tried showing him articles, and I've even shown myself INSTALLING a modem but... because the information is so scattered, he won't look for more then 2 seconds. He asked me to find some more centralized information... :banghead::banghead:
So I came here.
Would someone please explain how certain modems actually help the phone, and the advantages that can be taken by using certain modems?
The things some do to prove a point... I tried before I came to you E4GT community. If this is in the wrong section, feel free to delete or move it mods.
Many thanks will be had

I think you need to do a practical demo for your dad. Flash el29 modem. Run some tests.. Check signal bars.. Then flash some other modem and from same location run same tests..

I did that! I guess I could've specified that when I put in the bit about installing a modem before his eyes. I think I figured it out. He owns an iPhone 5 so... Maybe I'll just play that song for him by Will Smith "Parents Just Don't Understand."

Wait, he has an iPhone and you can change modems on it? Didn't know that..
Have you tried looking in Xda forums sister site for iPhones for that information?
No hate intended, just asking.

No, I changed the modem on my E4GT. As far as I know, you can't on the iPhone.

So I've got the official stock tar sitting here

Kk guys, uploading to megaupload now...this is definitely gonna take a while
It should be a complete phone image, writing over every partition (as is the case with all Samsung tars)...there's definitely a modem in it, but as far as pulling it, I don't know, I'm not knowledgeable enough about pulling things out of tars.
I'm going to put a link in here first before posting it up in development because I need somebody to test it in Odin. We use a pre-packaged .exe here to flash phones, so Im not able to test it with Odin (though I can't foresee it failing as the tars have always been identical to the ones we use here at xda). So when it's up, please test and let me know.
Hang tight for a while, megauploads quoting the ETA at 2 hours....
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I think it would definitely be cool to upload this for us. Easy way for everyone to flash back to factory. Might even root now if this is the correct stock file.
Actually scratch that ETA, our neighbors wifi is too slow, I'm gonna have to wait until I get home at 6. So sometime tonight

I'm also on eg12 and I was missing texts and calls when the screen was off.
Download the app always awake from t2k269 from the market, that app fixed my problem.

More importantly, this theoretically has the EG30 modem, something we don't have right now and no one has been able to obtain yet. Everything else we can make do with the pulled versions.
Love to have this simply as a back up as well until the next official tar is out. Thanks for when you get this up. And thanks for mirroring it Chris.

What is a modem?

I keep reading about this modem thing but what exactly is it? And do I need it?
Its the radio firmware for the phone, and yes you will need it if you want your phone to function properly.
it's found between mode L and mode N
kidding aside, it's the actual part of the phone that makes it a phone.. without it, you have the sprint epic touch galaxy s 2 doorstop (well, android would still work, but no calls/texts... it'd basically bad a 4.5" tablet)
So why do people switch em?

Various reasons..
-To try and fix issues
-To return to stock
-Because they just have to be on the latest (but not always best) revision
I would love to hear feedback about which modem people feel is giving the best performance. My signal seems the most consistent on EL13

Hey crew, I found this awesome video comparing Ek02 and EL13
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWS2qr9GMMM

[Q] One week deep. LOS/Sleepy Radio software or radio based?

I like the hardware but this loss of service thing is annoying.
Has anyone determined if this is a software issue? Sprints network isnt great but my evo 3d fares much better.
Ive read around on the internet and I THOUGHT I read a post that mentioned a user reverting to EG30 which solved his/her problem. Only thing that isnt positive is whether the user reverted to software EG30 or baseband EG30.
Any insight into this issue, how to revert to an earlier software version? Ive tried various radios but not software. I appreciate your time.
I'm having same problem....my evo 3d had no problem with Los but my e4gt is terrible where I live.....I was told to try different modems but I tried FCO7 AND FC14 still the same.

Hmm, what do you mean by "loss of service"?
This is a term used specifically to describe losing service while the phone says it has service...

Ok, maybe that is incorrect.
Just using it, for example sending a tweet or an email, one may send immediately. Then if I choose to refresh or send a second tweet/email right after, the transmission arrows dont light up for a while. Its like the radio is going to sleep way too fast and it takes even longer to wake up and complete the transaction. Enabling/disabling fast dormancy doesnt seem to make a difference.
Edit: under these conditions, I never get the "no signal" icon. Just seems the radio is sleepy
Well I asked around because my signal sucks but I called sprint and they said my area has really good service.....but people told me to try FCO4 and FC14 and FCO7 that might help so I did......nothing helped.
I just looked it says I'm using el29 on my kernal and FCO7 under baseband.......not sure if that helps, ill try to find out more and if it helps ill let you know

If not then manually install a different PRL, so you can connect to closer towers in your area, and don't forget to update profile and prl in settings>about phone> system updates

If it works for you, then keep with it. You're free to try any modem, but you aren't bound by the ROM version.

If you're getting good signal/data speeds, stick with what you have. It really matters on your location. For me, FF18 is the best but for others, FF27, FH13, etc...

Modems are area/device dependent.
Meaning, what might work well for me, might not work well for you.
You can try any modem with any build. Try the latest and see if your speeds improve or not. Might find that what you have is the best for you, might not.
(some say to update profile/prl after each time you change, i for one, don't see improvement doing that, but try it)
: edit: From fi03 forward, 4g speeds increase due to changes of Wimax settings. So if 4g is a player for you, keep that in mind

Unrooting

Just got my t999L today, and almost done pulling all the data off the internal card. Would like to unroot it before I send it in the return sleeve but i want to ask what exactly is a Flash Counter? I see a few threads saying how to reset or avoid tripping it, but nothing quite explains what it is. Should I bother resetting it for a simple warranty exchange? And I assume I could simply do an Odin stock flash and that will take care of my unrooting issue?

And yes actually I have noticed great increase in speeds. Certain areas getting as much as 30up and 15down. Others are about the same down wise but the up speed has greatly increased.
Even if the speeds were in fact the same, I love that only select few roms work and there are bugs aplenty. I grew somewhat bored of everything working perfectly on the standard t999. Its like having the evo 4g all over again! Time to be a test mule
