[Q] One week deep. LOS/Sleepy Radio software or radio based? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I like the hardware but this loss of service thing is annoying.
Has anyone determined if this is a software issue? Sprints network isnt great but my evo 3d fares much better.
Ive read around on the internet and I THOUGHT I read a post that mentioned a user reverting to EG30 which solved his/her problem. Only thing that isnt positive is whether the user reverted to software EG30 or baseband EG30.
Any insight into this issue, how to revert to an earlier software version? Ive tried various radios but not software. I appreciate your time.

I'm having same problem....my evo 3d had no problem with Los but my e4gt is terrible where I live.....I was told to try different modems but I tried FCO7 AND FC14 still the same.

I'm using eg30 at the moment...it's not horrible. I'm on the stock el29 software.
You flashed the FCxx radios? Which software are you on? Thanks.

Yes I have. That's what the phone came with. Used el13 and el26 too. This is my first run with eg30

Hmm, what do you mean by "loss of service"?
This is a term used specifically to describe losing service while the phone says it has service...

Ok, maybe that is incorrect.
Just using it, for example sending a tweet or an email, one may send immediately. Then if I choose to refresh or send a second tweet/email right after, the transmission arrows dont light up for a while. Its like the radio is going to sleep way too fast and it takes even longer to wake up and complete the transaction. Enabling/disabling fast dormancy doesnt seem to make a difference.
Edit: under these conditions, I never get the "no signal" icon. Just seems the radio is sleepy

Well I asked around because my signal sucks but I called sprint and they said my area has really good service.....but people told me to try FCO4 and FC14 and FCO7 that might help so I did......nothing helped.
I just looked it says I'm using el29 on my kernal and FCO7 under baseband.......not sure if that helps, ill try to find out more and if it helps ill let you know

I've been using eg30 all night and so far, knock on wood, its been working pretty well.

You just downloaded the eg30.zip then flashed it?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium

If not then manually install a different PRL, so you can connect to closer towers in your area, and don't forget to update profile and prl in settings>about phone> system updates

The only prl that I think would help is the corporate 11115 prl.
Any other suggestions?

Keep trying different modems man, I used to get some ****ty service with EL29 on this phone but on FC18 I get some crazy speeds, with very little reception.

Los on this phone is when you have a circle with line thru it the only thing that fixed that was reboot sometimes toggle airplane mode but they fixed that long ago . Now some ics had similar problems but had a lot to do with your signal strength...

What is a modem?

I keep reading about this modem thing but what exactly is it? And do I need it?
Its the radio firmware for the phone, and yes you will need it if you want your phone to function properly.
it's found between mode L and mode N
kidding aside, it's the actual part of the phone that makes it a phone.. without it, you have the sprint epic touch galaxy s 2 doorstop (well, android would still work, but no calls/texts... it'd basically bad a 4.5" tablet)
So why do people switch em?

Various reasons..
-To try and fix issues
-To return to stock
-Because they just have to be on the latest (but not always best) revision
I would love to hear feedback about which modem people feel is giving the best performance. My signal seems the most consistent on EL13

FC24 modem with Calks 3.0 EL29 ROM, im pushing 1.5mb/s download in an area I would usually get .5mb/s max.
FC-15 has been the best for me so far on everything except for bluetooth as I haven't yet tested it.
Edit: I did a speed test on 4G yesterday with the FC-15 modem and got decent results though the latency wasn't as good as I would've liked it to be.

Calkulins 2.9.2
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
I don't see any difference in them. Only observation I've made:
The early ones totally sucked. I never got complete LoS but I'd go roaming all the time for no reason and had to reset network.
New ones are better but STILL suck. Instead of going roaming a lot it switches to 1X a lot. At least I don't totally lose service and get the stupid notifications.
Consensus: Sprint network sucks and the modems don't matter. I've always had problems with Sprint compared to when I had Verizon but I'd rather save $.

No problems on FC22 for the last couple weeks. Will make the switch to FD02 soon

Not a boost user but have seen posts from users where flashing / updating doesn't wipe settings.
If it would, then theoretically a nandroid would take you back.

Anyways from what I have found is that no rom I have flashed on this phone has messes up the radio settings where all the carrier settings are stored. You should be fine. But that being said flash at your own risk ha.

If it works for you, then keep with it. You're free to try any modem, but you aren't bound by the ROM version.

If you're getting good signal/data speeds, stick with what you have. It really matters on your location. For me, FF18 is the best but for others, FF27, FH13, etc...

Modems are area/device dependent.
Meaning, what might work well for me, might not work well for you.
You can try any modem with any build. Try the latest and see if your speeds improve or not. Might find that what you have is the best for you, might not.
(some say to update profile/prl after each time you change, i for one, don't see improvement doing that, but try it)
: edit: From fi03 forward, 4g speeds increase due to changes of Wimax settings. So if 4g is a player for you, keep that in mind
