[Q] v9 OTA fails to install - Sprint LG Optimus G

ok, so I searched this forum and didn't see any post with my issue so here it goes.
I have a rooted but not unlocked LG OG.
I used SuperSU "full unroot" option to remove root from the phone.
Root Checker confirms root is gone.
Clicked install on Sprints OTA of v9
phone restartes, logo of an android pops up with a spinning crystal in his chest (install animation)
then at around 25-30% the androis falls over with a red ! triangle above his chest. phone then reboots still with v8
What is wrong with this?

Maybe a bad download? You could unlock and flash zv9 rooted stock if you are so inclined.

I'm not a power root user. I rooted mainly to remove bloatwear and to use adfree. Only reason I'm trying to upgrade is my phone starts to glitch out bad as soon as the OTA install nag starts.

Then might as well root and unlock and flash ZV9.

Mine is doing the EXACT same thing. Does anyone have any idea why? And how to get it to actually finish?
*EDIT* I just spent the $1 Project FreeGee unlock app and worked beautifully, running custom ROM now

Has anyone installed the OTA AFTER rooting?

I just got the notification for it, but I don't want to risk anything. Is it good to go?
no, before this gets moved, not good to go. don't flash it. you will lose root
seems like you will lose the root...
but some have posted that even after the ota update... the current root process will still work.
Strange. Thanks, guys.
You'd loose your root.

I rooted did OTA and still seemed to have root access. Just re-rooted and it seems cool flashing stock rom in a second I guess to confirm
Ok I didnt flash a rom but it is letting me do data wipes and all other functions it seems cool!
Flipz confirmed my successful Re-root looks like OTA is safe!
I rooted mine BEFORE the OTA upgrade.. and it stayed rooted after.. -m
I'm not taking any chances. The other dev team is supposed to release their root and it may be more complete than what we have now. No reason to take a chance on an update that isn't totally critical.
I just tried it.. it appears to fail, reboots, and you're still on 1.32.651.1.

Let me correct this.. The OTA update did not work.. (I stayed at the old software version after trying to apply it.. but root stayed around..)
NOW has anyone managed to place the SD card fix on here manually?
-mark
Yes please. Just update.zip that goodness please. I am sure a complete SuperFresh Rom is on its way.
Well i guess I got this all backwards
I didnt know any better when I got the phone in the store, and I did the update...
then decided to root it.... did the process....
it worked.... but then I had the insufficient permissions on the SD card issue...
after reading a bunch of yea's and nay's on OTA update
I finally made the decision to just due the OTA update cuz I that SD card issue really bugged me...
I did the OTA update, the phone did this funny thing where its showing a green progress bar and then in the middle of it, a red question mark pops up as if it were saying " what the hell is this??" lol
it rebooted... and phone came back online, and now my SD card isnt having the same issue anymore...
UPDATE: Its back.... so now what do I do? Is there any way I can include all my info and settings and apps in a custom recovery cuz if i have to do this again im gonna freak. lol

your having the same problem as me... the update failed.. which is why were waiting on a way to manually apply the update.
OTA worked perfectly. And I get root access
I still haven't gotten the OTA...no matter how many times I manually "check now" in HTC Software Updates, it does not show up. I don't know why this is happening, it's very odd. I'm waiting for someone to cook the update into a custom, or rather stock, ROM. It's driving me insane at the moment, not to mention a bunch of apps are missing from the market (a whole other issue in it's own right). If anyone has an update.zip I can flash or a way to fix this, please please please let me know. Thanks.
I wasn't getting the OTA notification either until I enabled WiFi, then restarted the phone. Worked perfectly after that. Didn't even have to go to system updates.

[Q] Should I update to the OTA gingerbread update?

Hey, I'm sorry I'm a noob, but I was wondering, I'm on the Virtuous 3.2 ROM which is pretty much like the stock ROM, minus the bloatware, buy has other features like battery percentage on the notification battery icon and other few tweeks. I got a notification saying that I was verified for the Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread update. Since I'm not on my stock sense ROM, would it be alright to just go ahead and install it or just manually install it?
I am on the skyraider 4.3, which I love. I woke up and saw the same notification, I believe that not update right now or it might brick your Di, can somebody help us? Thanks.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
I too received the notice to update. I am rooted with s-off bit still on the stock Rom. I don't want to lose root or s-off so I am going to wait a bit.
I think you can accept the OTA update and re-root but not 100% sure.
I want to start flashing roms but I need a bigger SD card first.
Sent from my rooted HTC Incredible using XDA App
I'm pretty sure the s-off part is not going to hurt anything, but if you are rooted and have a different recovery the OTA will not work. My suggestion is, even tho its annoying resist the urge to do the OTA until someone can root it, and make it flashable with CWM.
So i recently broke my original Incredible but got a basically unused one from a friend. It had stock 2.2 on it, so i manually upgraded to 2.3 with the previous gingerbread update verizon released, but then pulled. So i never rooted or S-off'd this phone. This might seem like an obvious answer, but should I, or even can I perform the OTA update?
I think there is someone who already made a flashable version of the OTA update, but its for root users only and it has to be done through CWM
Sent from my ADR6300 using xda premium
I've been on the stock ROM since I got the phone, and I'll probably just flash the OTA Rom once I get some clarification on the process
Is there a way to make the OTA update nag screen go away? I'm on skyraider 4.3, I'd rather just wait for 5.0.
@cpuspeed I'm getting there same problem. Hopefully, some of the ROM developers will update. I actually want a ROM based off the OTA release so I can keep on using my TV out cable lol

Is there a way to force the nag/ notification to appear? I've been checking for it all morning
You can force your phone to check for an update by opening the phone screen (like you're going to make a call) and typing the following:
*#*#checkin#*#*
Don't spell out checkin in letters, those are simply the numbers on the keypad that you need to press. You should receive a notification that the checkin succeeded. Now you can go to menu>settings>about phone>system updates and see if it shows up. This doesn't guarantee that it'll immediately find the update, but it does force the phone to check for one.
But is there any way to get rid off the nagging message "there an update ready for the phone, install now or later?"

Not that I'm aware of. I'm running Skyraider 4.3 and am encountering the same message. Rather annoying.
what if it says 'checkin failed'? Do I need to be on 3g for the checkin to work?
edit: Ok I switched to 3g and it said 'checkin succeeded', but still shows no update when I go to settings, about, system updates. Guess I'll have to wait.
thank you though.
to get rid of the nag screen delete or rename OTAcets.zip in /system/ect/security, I just renamed to OTAcets.zip.bak.
use root explorer or ghost commander w/busybox to edit root files.
reboot for the nag screen to go away. go to menu>settings>about phone>system updates if you want to update in the future or delete the file in /cache directory if you know you don't ever want to.
give thanks if this was helpful.
silly question I guess, but do I need to be on 3g in order for the update notification to show up? I work from home am connected to wifi 24/7. I rarely put my phone on 3g since it eats battery on 3g. I will keep it on 3g though for next few days if necessary.

Nope, I was on WiFi only yesterday and it showed up all by itself in the evening. I'm also on Pagepluscellular, so you don't even have to be directly subscribed with verizon. Also don't have to have stock rom as I'm rooted, s-off and using custom rom (skyraider 4.3).
@cpuspeed, the method didn't work. Is there any way? Also there is another file in the same directory *.bks

[Q] Blue LED and no screen :(

tl;dr I have a blue LED showing up in the top left of the phone and nothing showing up on the screen after the SAMSUNG logo appears. I do hear the Sprint 4G LTE music, but that's it. The screen is off.
NOTE: I'm running Sprint's stock 4.1.1 ROM rooted.
Other threads I looked at (neither is the same issue):

I had my first OTA update appear today. When I ran the update, Clockwork showed up and upon hitting "Yes", it failed. I looked around online and found this guide to reverse my rooting: http://www.epiccm.org/2012/06/sprint-sgs3-stock-restore.html
I was able to successfully flash TeamEpic-RemoveRoot-from-Recovery-signed.zip, but I didn't hit the keys right for the next one and ended up booting into the OS.
After restarting the phone, I hit the right keys and started ODIN. I saw COM show up in blue and put the TeamEpic-Sprint-SGS3-stock-boot-and-recovery.tar.md5 file in the PDA area then hit Start. I got a green PASS and then closed Odin and waited.
The phone had a black screen with that blue LED in the top left. I waited a while and then just powered it off. Took out the battery and tried again, same thing; although, the SAMSUNG logo does show up. It turns off when the Sprint part is supposed to show and at that moment I can hear the audio but the screen turns off. In this mode, the phone gets very very hot.
I can still boot into the stock recovery, but I can't do much else.
I just wanted the OTA . Does anyone know what might be happening?
EDIT: I put Clockwork Recovery back on, and then Advanced Recovered the boot part of a backup I did before this mess. Surprisingly, that worked. Problem is, I still haven't gotten the OTA working.
Ideas?

Why are you so intent on taking the OTA? Freeza has a stock rooted ROM over in his thread. And if you want just update the baseband, just flash the "MB1 Firmware/modem/baseband update" file in the aforementioned thread.
If you're already rooted with a custom recovery (which you were/are), there's no reason to unroot just to flash the OTA. Freeza typically has his stock rooted ROM updated with the OTA within a week of it being released. In my area OTAs are kind of late, so he typically gets it out before I even see the notification.
So, in summary. OTAs are not required, XDA (and Freeza in particular) has you covered.

I'll go ahead and give it a try then. I haven't ever had a ROM update since I got the phone in October so I figure the upgrade won't work right, and I'll need the full ROM. Currently doing a backup.
Does flashing a ROM affect all app settings? And if so, by that point I'd just wanna have another ROM. The main reason I am fine w/ the stock ROM rooted is bc all my settings and apps are already installed and configured as well as the fact that I know it will work properly. So if this removes my settings, no reason to go stock anymore aside from the fact that I've seen that CyanogenMod doesn't get as good of signal on the S III as stock-based ROMs. Do you know if this still true?

A dirty flash is when you flash without clearing anything, and that's why no data is lost when you do one of those. However it can lead to issues, so i would advise against it when possible

[Q] Root not taking?

Hi, I have a T-Mobile Galaxy Note 3 running 4.4.2 and I am trying to root my device, but it's not taking. I downloaded the CF Auto Root file, opened up Odin and ran the cycle of rooting it. After it's done, it tells me that it passed, but it doesn't put a SuperSU icon on my phone. Also, when I go into the Root Checker app, it doesn't pop up with a Super User Request, and it tells me that my device doesn't have proper root access. It gets even weirder though. I have an app called SCR Pro, which allows me to record my screen, but it only works with root access. It is working fine. I have tried the root process a few times, each time telling me that it has passed, but the Root Checker tells me otherwise. I really need my phone to be rooted, the reason being that I am trying to stop my home button from waking up my screen. When my phone is in my pocket, the home button keeps getting pressed, and it turns the lock screen on. The screen stays on and the phone gets very warm and drains my battery. When I searched for a solution, I was told that I had to be rooted and do some things in Root Explorer. Anyway, I'm getting off topic here. Does anyone know why Odin is telling me that the root process is passing when in fact it is not rooting my phone? Thanks in advance for your help!
Oh, btw, before I updated my GN3 to 4.4.2, I had 4.3 and was rooted (so I am kind of familiar with the root process, but still a newbie to all this). I couldn't update to Kitkat since I was rooted, so I updated manually through Kies. Once I was updated to Kitkat is when it seemed like the root wasn't taking anymore. And yes, I used the newer root process for 4.4.2... I am stumped...

Don't update it. More than likely if you have twrp and root it will loop. I did mine this morning and it looped it. I had to factory reset with the lg tool. Just wait it out. The update isn't that serious.

First off, this question belongs in the Q&A not development
BUT. Regarding root, you never want to apply an OTA update, you never know if they could patch any rooting exploit and or lock the bootloader. Someone will most likely pull the update from the device and make us a flashable zip that will preserve root.
So for now do nothing at all
I have no intention of installing this update but how do I get rid of the persistent notification? It's annoying me.

I know on my S4 i337m when running the Google Play Edition ROM I modified this line in the build prop to the same line from the build prop in that update.
ro.build.fingerprint=samsung/jgedlteue/jgedlte:4.4.4/KTU84P.S001/140602:user/release-keys
I'm assuming it would work on ours too if anyone has their phone updated and can post that (ro.build.fingerprint) line from their build prop.
Is there anyone that maybe posted an update we can flash on our Rooted/Non Stock Recovery phones?

How come my cache folder is empty? I'm using es file explorer and i have my settings set to show hidden files. I even ran a search for the update.zip and the lg .apk someone listed and i can't find either off them.
Im using root explorer and went cache and just renamed the file to .bk

Do you have the notification for the update
I installed root explorer and found the file but it wouldn't let me rename or delete it. It said it was successful but didn't actually work.
