Battery Life - AOSP vs STOCK - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi everyone,
I come from the original i9000 Galaxy S where I loved CM, but have upgraded to the S3.
Unlike the i9000, I actually do enjoy Touchwiz on the S3 so am willing to stick with it, but wouldn't mind trying CM10.1 or AOKP 4.2 just for a change. I am aware of their bugs (ie. bluetooth), but my main concern is BATTERY LIFE.
Presently, I'm on stock (rooted) and while I enjoy stock, the battery life has been crap for me since the JB upgrade. Because of this, I am looking to switch to either a custom TW rom or something AOSP.
From your experience, is battery life better or worse for you with Custom TW roms or with AOSP? If you answer Custom TW, can you please let me know which roms you prefer?
Thanks

No one can answer this because each device is different, each person uses their device differently and each device reacts differently to different settings. I'd say just try them out.

In my experience i've gotten better battery life on Touchwiz. Noticeably better using the phone in the same way.

So far my battery has been better than stock rom.

On the same setup i have better battery on aosp roms(using task aokp)

My battery is much better on AOKP than it was on TouchWhiz, however, my wife's battery is better than mine and she's on stock TW JB. Never can tell.

I currently am using WickedV6 and the battery life is fantastic. After a normal day, I normally have roughly 50-60% battery life when going to bed. Have not attempted any AOSP Rom on the S3. On my Captivate, the AOSP Roms ate the battery. Barely got through a 12 hour day without having to recharge.

I get about 5 hrs of screen time on AOKP before my phone dies.

Out of curiosity, are you guys all on wifi all day? I find my battery life to be ok when I'm on wifi, but unfortunately that is not an option for me at work so I am on HSPA+ all day.
Right now with new AOKP build, I am at 20% battery and my work day isnt even over yet....screen on time is only 40 minutes. I have Google Now and location services turned off, but can still barely make it through a work day with minimal screen time.
When I was on stock ICS, I remember going to be with 50% battery and 2 hrs screen time using HSPA+ all day.

Thoughts on ROM's so far??

So I'm new to the android community coming from an iphone 4S, and so far it's pretty awesome. lol. I've tried two ROM's, AOKP and TuchMi. So far i'm enjoying TuchMi since it brings the stock with all of Samsung's features, plus overclocking, V6 and all that. performance has been nice. As i'm trying to get more into android, I wanted to know you guy's thoughts on the two ROM's or maybe any other ones that might be better?? thanks in advance!

I was hoping this thread to run good since I am trying to get an idea on roms since I just got my S III today.
We got enough good roms going.
I mean we have a subsidized carrier phone, so it's pretty natural for the international counterpart would get more attention.
With that said, I love AOKP.
AOKP is beast. Just trying to test out different ROM's, but seriously, if you like touchwiz, check it out. Only thing is, my apps say they are invalid when I download. Any help??

Diet ICS
Also tried TuchMi, it was pretty good.
Currently using the diet ICS build from 08/04 with the latest BLUE theme installed (found in the diet ICS thread from peterguru) and it looks and works great. Running ktoonz latest kernel (which allows underclocking to 192MHz and has more steps than faux123's v009) and smokin's CPU Editor with Battery Saver. Great battery life, great performance, awesome blue "diet" theme. Probably my favorite so far.
To be honest though the thing that made me switch and flash diet ICS over TuchMi 5.0 was the inclusion of Google Wallet (although now my phone thinks its a Galaxy Nexus ) -- still haven't been able to test it out in the wild though...

AOKP has been wonderful so far, flashed it from CM9 and not really seeing any reason to go back although both are great in their own ways.
Wanam has a really nice ROM. Well that's if you're one of us that actually likes Touchwiz. I for one love it. Smooth and excellent battery life.

I've been on TuchMi-S3"X" 5.0 since i got my phone 2 weeks ago. So far the best. I tried Diet rom too, but it was a little skinny for me (lol?).
I tried AOKP today and I had used AOKP on my Atrix before, but I went back to TuchMis3x right away because its so far the best. Stable, Battery is insane too!
I'm just waiting for CM10 to fully come out for our phones and i'll make the switch!
Sooo, I switched from TuchMi to AOKP, and right after, my battery starts to drain. Drained about 5% within 2min. Running TuchMi, my battery barely moves. Now I'd have to say that it is successfully the best ROM imo. only problems are: my Google account syncs on and off with contacts, and sometimes i get a blue screen fracture. idk.

If your battery drained that fast then something is wrong. Almost 11 hours on battery with 2 hours of screen time, lte on all day and wifi on past 3 hours and I am sitting at 62% right now. I am on aokp ics right now. Only thing keeping me from newer updates is that HBO go doesn't work in any of the cm10 based in roms yet that I know of
I would also like to point out that it takes several battery cycles before a rom fully settles in and you find out how it truly performs with battery.

Thanks for that. Like I said, I'm new to this so I didn't know what was going on, so the first thing that came to my mind was to go back. Now I just flashed the AOKP jb ROM. The AOKP that i had before was the CM9 based one i believe? lol. Either way, thanks man. added a little more confidence for me lol.
Jellybro from Euroskank the best one for my needs. not the last one though. 2 days battery, butter smooth, love the Jelly aesthetics and simplicity.
When the bugs are worked out of paranoid android I would say give that a run. The ability to run phone and tablet on one device together flawlessly is great. Plus you ave full control over the size of all apps and the such.
JellyBro is my top pick, then would be a stock ROM ([ROM]{??/??/????}TEAM_INSOMNIA PrEsEnTs ARISTODEMOS) and after that I'd say AOKP CM9 based for EXTREMELY long battery life.
been using cm9 for a few days, perfectly stable so far and great battery life. Can't beat stock ics
Blazer
I have been on Blazer O/C with the Kalagas mixed ICS Theme and love it. Seems all the stock based ROMS are fine with some nice tweaks

Why do jelly bean !CUSTOM! roms drain battery so fast on the One X?

I just want to know what the problem is here. I cross my fingers and hope that the battery won't deplete as quickly on the official JB rom.
I've had my fair share of test of various jelly bean roms, now i did not only return back to ARHD or Maximus or whatever other rom because of speed differences in particular, but also because sense's widgets can be so useful, and in my opinion are. Saves a lot of time searching and downloading widgets off the play store
Just thought i would ask if there are any actual or maybe even obvious reasons that someone can explain as to why the JB roms are draining battery quite fast that i am not aware of?
The only things i can think of are
1..Deep sleep? although, on second thought it appears to be working perfectly
2. Now the only thing that comes to mind is could it possibly be the power saver core not being used well, if at all?
I've got the feeling there's more to this.. anyone care to shed some light?
Not sure, but it would be nice to have a stock JB ROM that had great battery life. I'm with ya on this one.
I do not own a One X but I also have the same trouble with battery drain on JB ROMs for my Sprint Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch.
It has to be something to do with the OS itself not being fully optimized for the device it's being built for. I would imagine once the manufacturer releases official JB it will be optimized and not drain the battery so fast.

I always assumed it was because the stock Sense kernel always had the latest update from HTC, with JB kernels being custom and based on older source. But since 2.17 kernel source has been released, custom kernels should have "caught up".
Maybe sense and sense apps are written specifically to take advantage of the low power core, but I highly doubt it.
Would be cool if a dev comes in and gives us a lecture
Either way, i'll have a look at this thread tomorrow, good night!
Yeah battery life sucks on aosp based roms. It was the reason why I moved back to Venom rom after 2 months of struggle with cm9 and cm10. And it was so refreshing since the sense 4.1 feels much faster than 4.0. Anyway I hope the aosp based roms will get there and even improve the overall user experience over sense.

I consistently get more than 4hrs screen on time with CM10 and NCX kernel, I'm more than happy with that.
Flash latest ICJ with its stock kernel (neo's v7,5) and feel the powa. Near-sense battery life for me (0,5hr screen on time difference)

new Galaxy Nexus, looking for suggestions on ROM urgent [leave on business sunday]

I am a recent Galaxy Nexus owner, my daily main device is an Atrix 4g [motorola] but since I have been messing with "that rom" and having tons of stability issues, I am giving the "gnex" a chance
I leave on business Sunday so I can't take chances on unstable/buggy roms but need some good suggestions
the biggest feature I would need is soft key mods. I am willing to use an ICS rom but prefer having JB. Without the soft keys I am kind of lost and I honestly do not like action over flow and lack of menu/search
Next biggest issue is battery life, coming from a 1900 mah battery with a small pentile screen, battery life is not really a problem on atrix. Galaxy Nexus seems decent on battery life so far but would not mind a little boost
So if you have a good rom suggestion, let me hear it. The mainline roms I see [aosp and cm] don't have the soft key mods so hope you will help out

Or aokp. @ op you asked a question only you can answer yourself.
good day.
As Chopper states, you're the only one that can decide which ROM best suits your needs. That being said I would stay on stock until you have time to test out other ROMs; nothing worse than finding a bug when you really need a stable device.

Leaning towards AndroidME stock or AndroidME cm10...has anyone used this for more than a day or two?
I used AndroidME as a daily driver for quite some time (the stock version) and enjoyed it. Very stable and I got great battery life when using it with the Trinity Kernel (3.5-4 hrs screen on time). Am now running AOKP because of its added features and ability to customize.
..........................
CyanogenMod 10 is your best bet for modifiable Nav Bar buttons. The others, codename Android, AOKP, let you add, say, a search button to the Nav Bar, but at least with Codename Android the search button is smaller than the other buttons. It looks weird.
CyanogenMod 10 is the most "stock" custom ROM out there.

[Q] Question about TW based ROMs vs AOSP based ROMs.

Hey guys, I read somewhere that Touchwiz based ROMs tend to have better battery life, higher data speeds, and better reception. Is this true? I've been running AOSP ROMs pretty much since the beginning, and can't really find any TW ROMs that sound good. I also dont care about the TW features since they all seem like lazy gimmicks to me. However, if they do have better reception, speeds, and battery life, I might switch.

TW has better bluetooth audio...aaaaaaaand thats about the all advantages i can think of think of.
i get hours more battery life on my AOKP rom than my wife does on her stock s3. identical reception. identical LTE. loads more rom/user options. i dont think i have to point out why millions of s3's are running an aosp-based rom. cheers

I believe that picture quality is a subjective metric. Some people prefer the pics from AOSP, some from TW. Other's can't tell the difference. The different frameworks allow for different options. Honestly it is a matter of taste. My best advice is to flash to stock or another TW ROM and take some pictures. Only way you are going to know for sure. Other's experiences may very well be different than your own.
Truly a matter of what ya like, I use task 650 AOKP and could never loose ROM control or the extras I get with AOKP as far as camera, sound and signal being better I see it all about the same, if you can tell a difference you sir are sharper than I. As far as the battery I'm happy, but I've herd of crazy life like 7 days on TW but I don't turn anything off and use my phone a decent amount. Like already stated flash away and test for a few days to see which and report back

I doubt that is true as well. TW has a lot of bloat by design and all of that equals faster battery drain.

I'm trying Task650's AOKP and I don't see too much of a downgrade in camera quality, but camcorder recordings are quite choppy. Other than that, I'd take this rom over TW any day.

Rom and set up with best battery life?

What rom + kernal+ tweaks give you the best battery life?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda premium
The battery on this thing is already a best but battery savers are things like turning off LTE, GPS, AutoSync turning down screen brightness turning on power saver mode ect. Also using a custom kernel i have found that underclocking to 1Ghz really doesnt affect the phone noticeably unless your playing a graphically intensive game
I've found that Jedi X12 gives me the best battery life. The phone with the stock ROM has great battery life, but I've been noticing some improvement with Jedi. Although, I do have Nova Launcher installed on it too...

I have tried them all!! I am a crack flasher but in my experience I would go with these top 3 combos.
Cleanrom 1.5 AT&T Special edition with stock kernel or perseus it probably only depends on if you are on LTE or WIFI and how long your screen is on.
I am currently running JEDI with his SABER kernel. Maybe I am using the device more these days I am not sure.
BARE BONE STOCK is 3rd in my book.
All the AOSP or CM or any of the more famous ROMS gave me the worse battery life. I think those roms arent as mature as the MODDED TW roms
I can't believe this has been asked again...
Choose a rom that has features that you think or know you want or would like to try. Then depending on the rom you're running see what kernels are available to you (TW roms use TW kernels, aosp & such run on a different kernel). Let the phone run for about 3 days to let everything settle and see how your battery life is.
From general posts around here I've seen Jedi, Skynote, and personal experience here with the Alliance TW rom go about 22 hours with on average 5-7 hours of screen time. All of these roms are either stock or running saber/persues...

This is a question that will never get answered.
Everyone's experience will be different.
No two phones are alike. No users habits are alike. What may work for you won't work for me and vice versa. You could try them all out and find the best battery life for your habits.
