[Q] Wifi Tether - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

I have a GN2 and have rooted with the Toolkit with success verified with Titanium Backup and Root checker.
Have tried several versions of WiFi Tether with the same results. The log for the app shows that is has "Done" all the steps but no luck broadcasting. I read in another post that Sprint Connections Optimizer was a problem and used Titanium backup to freeze the app and cleared the cache. I have a friend with the same phone and network and he uses WiFi Tether all the time with no problem, He sent the version he uses and I installed but still no luck. Since the posts regarding this have been made several months ago I thought I would post this. Thanks in advance for any help.

if you're rooted, I would try out TrevE Mod WiFi. I'm using version 3.2-beta2-***Synergized***: Linky. I use the driverreload2. But both worked. I would got some random disconnects on driverreload1. You'll want BusyBox installed too; you should install anyway if you're rooted. It's very useful tool
I don't remember doing anything else to get it working. I use it everyday at work connecting my tablet and old Evo4G to it.
That Connection Optimizer is annoying as all can be. I can't remember if I froze or uinstalled it, but I turned it off a minimum because every time I plugged the GN2 into a PC, it automatically switched to a WiFI connection.
Hopefully that will help.

Make sure that your specifying a cdma phone profile and not gsm in your wifi tether app. If there is no note 2 cdma then try nexus cdma. These settings are in "device profile" of the wifi tether app.
Also make sure u have busy box installed. That might help as well

First of all thanks for taking the time to help. I have tried installing the suggested version along with other versions of TrevE Mod but still have a issue with the phones signal not being seen by my laptop, tablet or desktop. With just about every version I have installed looking at the show log the software appears to go successfully through all the steps with done in green including the last step that wifi is running. I have tried numerous profiles such as wlan 0, wlan1, all the Galaxy S3 choices with the same results.

Thanks for the help. I have tried different profiles including Nexus CDMA but no success. It just seems that something is causing the broadcast not to function. The toolkit I used to root did state that it had busybox however when I searched in applications I did not find it. When I look in titanium backup it does show that busybox is there. I did install busybox free from the play store and that did not seem to make a difference. With all the versions I have tried they seem to go through the steps completely with a green "done" under each entry in the show log. The only time that doesn't happen is if I change the setting to ad-hoc, That causes errors.

Additional information that I found as a difference from my phone and my friend's that use's WiFi tether I discovered that the kernel I have is older. I am running the stock rom but my kernel version is as follows:
3.0.31-265523
se.infra @ SEP-63#1
SMP PREEMPT Wed Oct 3 15:59:26 KST 2012
Could this be part of my problem and if so how can I update it?

I'm not sure. I have used both the stock kernal and Persues with not problems. Right now, I'm not beta preview of TrevE Mod Wifi 3.3 with Persues kernal 3.036 alpha 30. Worked fine last night the seven hours I had it on at work.
DId you open BusyBox and make sure it was installed. It's important to open BusyBox otherwise it doesn't actually install Linux tools. BusyBox is an app to install Linux tools.

Wow - that is incredibly stable. Did you experience any disconnects on this newer version?

not that I noticed of. I test it the night before a bit streaming on my Tablet, and Hulu Plus was being nick picky. But I've had this issue with Hulu and several devices and seems to be more a network issue.
Worked fine last night too. Streamed two and hours of NFL network, hour and half of Netflix, about an hour Crackle. Sent a few emails. Did some web browsing.
It seems pretty solid thus far.

Wifi Tethering

pre 8 has been working for me
Is it a 2.2 ROM? If so, I do not believe Wireless Tether will work any longer (at least without just being ad-hoc). You do have options if you still want tethering for free. I don't have a direct link but you should be able to find something by searching. It has to do with modifying a value in the phones ##778 configuration settings.
If it's a 2.1 ROM, the suggestion above should work.
Make sure you have the android.tether fold on the root of your sd card. I am running skyraider 2.5.2 and wireless tether is working for me.

This isn't needed for the newer Pre versions however.
I've practically given up on this WiFi Tether.. it's worked for me once before, now I can't seem to get it working.
I'm running SR3.0 RC3, King #1 and S-OFF.
I've used both 3G Hot Spot on the SR 3.0 RC2 & 3, and the one from the app market... I modified the ##778 settings and still nothing... I don't see the folder mentioned above and not sure where to obtain it to try that out in my troubleshooting, but any help would be appreciated.
I'm pretty sure it's because the tethering comes standard with 2.2 and all its data usage will be connected to a plan now... I tried to use it last night to connect an iPod touch and the iPod was redirected to a page about billing information.
Well that sucks.
The ##778 method works on stock 2.2 DIncs too. I just upgraded last night, did the wifi hotspot hack and it works like a charm.
I've noticed since upgrading to SkyRaider 2.5.2, the Wireless Tether app has changed to ad-hoc and doesn't seem to work quite as well.
I've seen some suggestions to updating to "pre 8" and using codes such as this:
hxxp://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list?can=2&q=Incredible
How do you get the pre 8 version, and what do you do with the code above? I'd love to get the tether app back up to speed.

[Q] Wifi Hotspot Lag Issues

On stock FC09, I was having an issue with the Sprint Hotspot app. I used to be able to stay connected days/weeks at a time with 2 devices connected: Desktop with Windows 7 and a Laptop with Windows XP. I installed Windows 7 on the laptop a few days ago all of the sudden I would disconnect every 45 minutes to an hour on my desktop. Note: The disconnect/reconnect issue, is no longer the issue, just back history.
Today I rooted my phone using the pre-rooted FC09 using Odin with CWM. All went successfully and my phone is now fully rooted. I installed "Wireless Tether" and whenever I spoke on TeamSpeak 3, I would immediately lag and no one could understand me. I also use mIRC+NNS, so I was using that to track the lag. Here's a picture of irregular latency upon speaking of: i.imgur.com/t9JuS.png Anyways, I can basically see whenever I have high latency. And this latency is beyond the normal lag, it's an 18-35 second delay to the IRC server. My normal latency before this was 140ms, now it's 18,000ms - 30,000ms.
Whenever I open up FireFox while using Wireless Tether, Barnacle Tether Sprint Hotspot, I immediately start lagging when loading a webpage and I don't mean just like slowly loading, I mean it takes up to 3 minutes to load a webpage that has no images. I decided to go back to the original Sprint app and connect. Now that application is having the same issue. I'm getting insane latency whenever I speak on TS, load a webpage, etc.
Phone Info (after rooting):
Model number SPH-D700
Firmware version: 2.3.6
Baseband version: S700.0.5S.FC09
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7
Build number: GINGERBREAD.FC09
Hardware version: D700.0.5
3G Connection (I don't live in a 4G area)
Before this issue, I could use mIRC, play BF3, talk on TS, browse the internet while providing service to a laptop that's doing lite browsing, pogo.com games.
Solutions I've tried:
Clearing Dalvik cache.
Clearing partition cache.
Clearing the application's cache (Wireless Tether, Barnacle Tether).
Using a different application (Barnacle Tether)
Changing "channels" in the app settings.
Disabling/Enabling various app options.
Uninstalling/Installing RC/Beta versions of Wireless Tether and an older version.
Rebooting the phone.
Rebooting my PC.
Running virus scans with Malwarebytes.
Connecting with only my PC.
Connecting with only the laptop.
"su rm /data/data/android.tether/bin/fixroute.sh" (not sure what that did though cuz it said no such file found).
Using official Sprint Hotspot app.
I'm okay with being stuck with paying Sprint an extra 30 dollars a month for the WiFi app, but now that doesn't work properly. If anyone has a solution to my problem or suggestion, I'd really appreciate the help.
Thanks.

Last Night: .6 Down, .6 Up.
Right Now: .86 Down, .58 Up. Which is usually where it's at, between 1mbs and ~50-100 up.
Since making this post and coming back it looks like everything has been running smooth with both devices connected. Do you think it was a fluke or should I not even bother trying to install Wireless Tether again?

Yeah, I don't know. I was still having the problem so I ended up flashing to CM7 and then flashing the modem to EC05, then EL30. Once I rebooted from that it started working flawlessly with Wireless Tether.

Sprint hardware update = no wifi tether?

I was having signal go in and out at work all day yesterday, and it turns out Sprint was replacing a bunch of hardware in my area (Atlanta). Now, I cannot get wifi tether to work. My computer will connect, but it will not get internet. Wired tether works fine. I've tried the Sprint Hotspot in Calkulin's 3.0, and also the Hotspot in the ICS Goodness. I've also tried Open Garden, Wifi Tether for Root, and Fox__* (I can't remember the exact name).
It will not connect. Tried different roms, 3g/4g, resetting network ##72382# or whatever that code is, did a complete reset, tried different roms, etc.
The only thing I can conclude is that whatever Sprint updated here locally fixed this loophole for the hacked hotspot. Atlanta is an "A" market, and typically one of the first to get updated, so if this is the case, maybe nobody else is seeing it
Any ideas on what else I can try?? I need this wifi tether desperately.
have you tried foxfi?

I am not a dev, nor do I know a lot about anything. I seriously doubt changing tower hardware would "fix" a software workaround in a phone for internet sharing. I don't have an answer as to why or why not, but it sounds highly unlikely. I am speculating the two are not related.

Had this same problem about a year or so ago. Download "Root Checker" from Google Play. I forgot why but sometimes Root will be lost but your phone will say you are rooted. I don't remember the details. All you have to do is Root again if this is the case.
Try going into superuser app and updating the su binary, when mine get outdated sometimes wifi tether quits working but other root apps will still work.

Yes, no go on that one as well. No matter the program, I get the issue with my computer "unable to connect" on Windows 7, and also limited/no connectivity with Windows XP..
How can I generate a log to find out what's going on? I'm starting to get the feeling it has something to do w/ wifi driver, although wifi works fine, 4g works fine, 3g works, and wired tether works fine, I cannot get wireless tether to work with 3g or 4g..
Tried Sprint Hotspot, Wireless Tether (for root), Open Garden, Foxfi..

I agree, however, I'm assuming there's also an upgrade in software to go along with hardware changes, and they may have rolled something out at the same time. It could be a coincidence, but I've never had a problem before.

Ok, this is interesting. Do you all know if Wifi tether has always been ad hoc? I thought it used to show up as an AP in Windows.
Also, once I updated SU, my XP would connect to Wifi Tether only, but then tried the Win 7 and gave me the same "unable to connect" box. Now, neither of them work again.
Ideas? How to log, etc?
Do you all know now LAN settings would affect connectivity?
It seems Wired Tether uses 172.20.xx.xxx/30 while I believe the others were using 192.168.2.0 or 192.168.1.1, etc.
I'm in the Atlanta area (North West - Kennesaw/Acworth). I use WiFi Tether (the open source app not the built in), just tested it, I was able to connect and use the internet from my Nexus 7.

Foxfi is broken on the SE4GT since the ICS update.
Installation instructions (for Sprint Users):
1. Make sure "Unknown Sources" is checked in phone Settings (under Applications or Developer).
2. Tap on the following links to download the apk file for FoxFi.
3. From phone notifications select the downloaded file. This will install FoxFi.
FoxFi latest version: 1.91.3
*Support for the new Galaxy S3 and the new ICS update for Epic Touch are being worked on. Should be compatible soon in a future update.

As far as I know, the built in sprint hotspot is the only way to get infrastructure mode. All others are adhoc. If there is a setting for it for a profile, I think I remember reading somewhere to pick the galaxy nexus profile.
I just tried Wifi Tether in netd mode and it worked as Infrastructure. Client was Win7 x64.
Good to know too that I have a backup internet source if the main goes out. Not great but better than nothing.

WiFi Tether App Still Working?

I've been using the WiFi Tether App on my Epic 4g (CM9) for quite some time. I haven't had to use it for about a month, but it was working previously.
I tried to use the app today to browse with my iPad. The app initializes and connected without issue. However, my iPad will start to load a web page and stop about half way. Checking the app, I see that the download meter starts to tick upward, but quickly stops. The odd thing is that the mail app is working, downloading mail items at the set interval.
Is anyone else successfully using this app at this time? I'm trying to figure out if Sprint is blocking the packets requested by the iPad, or if I have an issue with the app or phone.
I've tried the following troubleshooting steps: (Note: app was properly configured and working several weeks ago)
- Rebooted the phone
- Installed the latest Beta
- Checked internet connection on the phone (working just fine)
Thanks,
- X

Maybe you can increase the data usage to higher limits. I'm using it right now on my laptop without issues. Also, I would recommend using the beta 11 and not to update to 14, and do not update the program even if it says "Update" available in the PlayStore. For some reason it gives issues.

Actually, I can't stand my iPad. Work gave it to me. I only use it until the apps I need make their way to Andriod.
At home I have my fire-sale Touchpad running CM9. I use that whenever I can.
I'll keep playing with the settings. At least you've confirmed that Sprint is not blocking it. I was suspicious because the data would fly-in for the first 2 seconds before dropping to 0.
Thanks!

Ok, here's the oddball thing. It is only my iPad that is being blocked from the data. My CM9 Touchpad (chrome) is able to access the data without an issue.
The only thing that's changes on the iPad is the upgrade to iOS 6, so perhaps the problem is with the iPad and not the tether app. I'm still suspicious that Sprint is picking off Safari packets or something, but that's likely my paranoia kicking in. I'll keep experimenting...

[Q] how to get Wi-Fi tethering to work

Well I have read through the development thread of ktoonsez and task's kernel and rom and even used yes search in the thread and have come up with no answers. When I was on ICS I had no issue with Wi-Fi tethering but since I have moved to this rom I can create the hotspots however there is no internet connection. I found a couple posts in the thread using the search but they seem to be gone from the actual thread since after I click the link it's not on the page that pops up.
I am currently running both the ktoonsez & task rom and kernel (latest versions) on a bell I747m with MVLDLK4 modems on MTS . I don't have a tethering plan but when I was on ICS it didn't seem to matter. Can anyone help me out or point me in the right direction?

If you are talking about using the WIFI Tether app Jelly Bean essentially broke it. The devs are working on a fix. XDA member Treve has a mod that will get it to work though. His OP is posted in the Verizon forums but I can assure you it works on our AT&T phones. I used it last night. There is an issue worth noting that once you tether and untether your WIFI won't work again until you clear cache and reboot. It is a minor annoyance IMO but I threw it out there so no one freaks out.
If you are talking about straight stock tethering I haven't run into the issue myself. My stock tether/WIFI hotspot works flawlessly. After updating to 4.1.1 did you do a full data wipe? If not I would recommend it. I ran into all kinds of bugs after doing the Kies update. Battery drain, Google Now had a learning disability, etc.
Do a google search for Treve WIFI Tether mod for the link and give it a go. In the OP he says that secure tethering doesn't work. It does. Used it last night as a test.
Also if you have a rooted phone already download mobile odin. You can have the app reflash the stock .tar and inject everoot and SuperSU. That's what I generally do when a new OTA is released. Hasn't failed me yet. Any questions shoot me a PM.

Wifi Tether works. The old version stopped working for me after upgrading to JB, but I downloaded a different beta. You have to download the TrevE Mod, wifi_tether_v3_3-pre2.apk.
Also I had to change some settings.
Device profile is set to GS3.
Fallback tether is enabled.
Send Netd Max Client Cmd is enabled.
Both Wifi-driver reload options are enabled.
MSS clamping is enabled.
Routing fix is enabled.
This works for me. Sometimes no data will come through but restarting my phone fixes the problem. I'm rooted on stock JB.
