pre 8 has been working for me

Is it a 2.2 ROM? If so, I do not believe Wireless Tether will work any longer (at least without just being ad-hoc). You do have options if you still want tethering for free. I don't have a direct link but you should be able to find something by searching. It has to do with modifying a value in the phones ##778 configuration settings.
If it's a 2.1 ROM, the suggestion above should work.

Make sure you have the android.tether fold on the root of your sd card. I am running skyraider 2.5.2 and wireless tether is working for me.

This isn't needed for the newer Pre versions however.

I've practically given up on this WiFi Tether.. it's worked for me once before, now I can't seem to get it working.
I'm running SR3.0 RC3, King #1 and S-OFF.
I've used both 3G Hot Spot on the SR 3.0 RC2 & 3, and the one from the app market... I modified the ##778 settings and still nothing... I don't see the folder mentioned above and not sure where to obtain it to try that out in my troubleshooting, but any help would be appreciated.

I'm pretty sure it's because the tethering comes standard with 2.2 and all its data usage will be connected to a plan now... I tried to use it last night to connect an iPod touch and the iPod was redirected to a page about billing information.

Well that sucks.

The ##778 method works on stock 2.2 DIncs too. I just upgraded last night, did the wifi hotspot hack and it works like a charm.

I've noticed since upgrading to SkyRaider 2.5.2, the Wireless Tether app has changed to ad-hoc and doesn't seem to work quite as well.
I've seen some suggestions to updating to "pre 8" and using codes such as this:
hxxp://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list?can=2&q=Incredible
How do you get the pre 8 version, and what do you do with the code above? I'd love to get the tether app back up to speed.

[Q] Rooted 2.2 and wireless tether on the Dinc

I'm trying to run wireless tether (http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/) on a Droid Incredible which has been updated to stock 2.2 and then rooted. I'm running wireless tether 2.0.5 pre 9 and everyting seems to work and I can connect to the phone from my laptop (running Win XP), but then I can maybe sometimes load a single web page and then I get timed out connections. It seems that DNS resolution is working as I get answers from nslookup in a command window.
Is anyone else having problems getting wireless tethering working? The web pages I've found on the subject seem to be from before Froyo came to the Dinc, even the Google project page doesn't mention 2.2.

Have not tried Wireless Tether with 2.2 since I can use the 3G Wirelecc Hotspot that comes with 2.2. All you need to do is this:
1. On your phone, bring up the dialer and dial ##778. This will load EPST.
2. Select EDIT.
3. Enter 000000 for the password.
4. Select SECURITY.
5. Select the username that has [email protected].
6. Edit the username to read [email protected] (delete "dun.").
7. Click the back button to return to the list.
8. Select M.IP DEFAULT PROFILE.
9. Repeat steps 5 and 6.
10. Click on MENU and select COMMIT.
You will not be charged for its use.
Thanks, I just tried that and got it working, but I thought that using the Google code was a little safer that it would never be accidentally switched back to paid mode.
I also noticed that when I tried to change the ssid or password that whenever I left the config screen and came back they were back to default values. Have you been able to change the 3g hotspot ssid/password?

Yu have to have a computer link first and then it will keep the settings. Do not know why they set it up this way.
Thanks, got it changed now - in fact I'm using that connection now.
Does this mean the wireless tether project is totally obsolete?

No, for those who do not have 2.2 yet, it is still an option (and a good one). Some people just like using it over the 3g Wireless Hotspot. I have used both and prefer the 3G Wireless Hotspot. I have no issues with it and get easy connects.
Is the equivalent procedure for the Droid X known yet? I've got a friend who just got his X updated to Froyo.

I do not know. Do a search for ESPT for the Droid X and see if it has a simular setup. If it does, the same changes should work for it.
Any updates on this? I'm on a rooted 2.2 incredible and wifi tether will not play with my ipad. Based upon what I've read, the issue surrounds the fact that the mac address refreshes on the app while the ipad does not like this and most ad hoc connections. I've heard that activaiton hack for the stock mobile wifi is no longer valid. Anyone else tethering?
Thanks,

The stock 3g hack still works also wireless tether pre15 works perfect for me

Help with tethering for iPad

I looked an could not find anything in other threads so I put this one in hear because I figured it is general. I just bought an wifi only iPad and I wanted to know if there was anyway i could tether the internet to it. I do not have a rooted slide and I am not looking to go in that direction. I was thinking my best bet is through Bluetooth but don't know. I thought about pdanet but I don't think it will work. Any sort of help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thank You
Unless a new wifi tether app that does not require root has come into existance without my knowledge, no, you can not wifi tether with this phone at the moment. Until tmobile updates us to 2.2 or you root, you will not see wifi tether on your phone. And since tmobile make exclude (i am not implying they will) wifi tether in the 2.2 update, you might as well root. I personally cant figure out how anyone has lasted this long without root. Simply not enough space for apps.
Isnt buying an ipad an abomination to android owners? It is to me lol!

Once rooted can it be unrooted? Does anyone know if 2.2 will have wifi tethering?
Yes, its possible to unroot. Take a look at the latest tmobile 2.2 phones and if they have wifi tether then you can probably assume we will. We will get wifi calling though

Congratulations on your iPad purchase. I'm sure you'll love it too. I also have the wifi-only version and a mytouch slide.
If you do not want to root, you can wait for T-mobile's 2.2 (froyo) update and I would expect you will be able to pay T-mobile $15 per month to use your slide as a wifi hotspot.
If you are willing to root your slide, you can turn your slide into a hotspot now.
The first thing I did was root my slide. After I did that I did NOT put the Eng build on at the time--I left my slide stock but rooted. I couldn't get the Barnacle tethering app to work at that time but the Wireless Tether app worked just fine with the ipad.
Recently, I flashed the Eng ROM and then I flashed Cyanogen 6.5 RC1 ROM. Wireless Tether app didn't work, but I installed Barnacle and it is working just fine with my iPad.
So, I just want to tell you that if you root your phone, you will be able to use it as a wifi hotspot. If you don't want to root, just hold on and I expect that T-mobile will offer the feature soon.
Thanks for the post. You said that you could not get barnacle to work but you did get a wireless tethering app to work. Which app was that?
the wifi tether can be obtained from here:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
After you root your phone, email it to yourself and open. Otherwise, transfer to your SD card and open with a file manager program like ASTRO.
Barnacle is available through the market.
which one would i download. And if i root the phone will i still receive over the air updates?
If you plan to use CM6.1 RC1, wireless tether version 2.0.5pre14 works great.
Sent from my CM6 Slide
would I still be able to receive ota updates?
Not from T-Mobile. However, CyanogenMod is updated more frequently and there are nightly builds for those of us that want to have the latest and greatest. Although at the cost of stability at times. But that's what makes it fun.
That being said, when T-Mobile decides to update, shortly after someone will make a rooted version.
Sent from my CM6 Slide
I'll just add to what you said. If you root BUT stay on the stock rom (don't flash the ENG build or anything) you will receive the ota updates. I'm not 100% but I think CR_MOD will get them also since it has the APN and a few other settings required to be pushed updates.
On CM6.1 RC1, wireless tether version 2.0.5pre3-test3 did not work for me (it worked on rooted stock). I later tried Barnacle and it worked fine so I did not try other versions.
It is good to know that if I had tried 2.0.5pre14, it would have worked great.
I am new to rooting/modding etc. and appreciate the help on XDA.
Anyhow, if one roots the slide, they should be able to use a hotspot app to tether with the ipad over wifi.
What is the best way to root and keep the stock without having to flash anything. And what app would i use to tether wifi? does barnacle work well?
The stickies on the Development section can help you.
The current method to root the slide is here (sticky in Development section):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754020
The old way that I used in July before the T-mobile update:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=702973
It is my understanding that the old method won't work if your phone has the latest T-mobile update on it.
If you root the slide but do not flash the Eng ROM, your phone will be rooted and it will keep the stock ROM.
You can try Barnacle from Market or get the wireless tether program. Between the two programs, one will work for you once your phone is rooted. I know it is a little intimidating to root the phone, but I am very glad that I did it. I am also glad that I put the cyanogen ROM on my phone too.
Thanks for everyones help on the subject. I found the best way for me to tether for my ipad and i don't have to go through the process of rooting. It's called universalandroot and it works on the mytouch slide. It roots the phone temporally and i am able to keep the stock rom like i wanted.

[Q] Wireless Tether Not Working

Hi I just flashed CM7 stable to my phone and I just reinstalled Wireless Tether for Root Users but for some reason it doesn't work. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks!
Is not going to work; it'll only work on sense roms. Also, you need tor eboot your phone so that your wifi will work.
use barnacle wifi tether its usually works with asop roms, wireless tether only works on sense
I'm not sure why, but wireless tether works perfectly fine for me on CM7, and other aosp roms. I'm.currently on salvage mod, and wireless tether for root users works perfectly. A month ago or so, it didn't work for me on any gingerbread rom, as it just have errors. Then a couple weeks ago it started working for me. Idunno, but I'm happy with it. I thought the app devs updated the app to work with gingerbread.
Edit: if you restored an old backup of wireless tether, try downloading it from the market. Market version works, my old backups don't.

Then I came back to try CM7, and to my surprise Wireless tether worked fine. And it also has for me on SalvageMod, Evervolv, and Savaged Zen. As I said, I had assumed that at first the app wasn't compatible with gingerbread just yet, and that the devs of the app had fixed it during my time on VaelPak. Strange.

Why not just use the built-in tethering that comes with CyanogenMod? You can find it under Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Tethering & portable hotspot ? It's based on the AOSP tethering that Google built.

Though you running salvage mod and me CM7 [basically the same] but the only difference is our kernels; you on savaged zen and me on Tiamat. I'm starting to think the Tiamat may not be "net filer" compatible, which is why its not working. Just a speculation.

Hmm. That's odd man. I was using the Tiamat 3.3.7 kernel the other day for a few minutes, but I couldn't stop the reboots long enough to even see if tethering worked at first. My phone hates undervolting. Then I tried ViperBoy's overvolting script, and that stopped the reboots. Once i was able to check tethering, it worked fine on Tiamat too.
I wonder if it has anything to do with busybox, or what SU binaries are being used or something. I don't get it. Am I just lucky to have wireless tether working on Gingerbread? In my super user app, it shows Su binary V2.3.1-ef. Not sure if that has anything to do with anything, lol, but who knows. I know when you start wireless thether the first time, super user pops up and says 'binaries installed' or something like that, so maybe if they're not right it's causing problems. Just thinking out loud here.

I guess so dude. The only thing I can recall doing differently, was using a modified version of wireless tether, for vaelpaks rom, right before I switched to cm7, and then it worked. And it has since then, on any rom, froyo, gingerbread, aosp, sense, it just works for me. I'm baffled. I want it to work for others too, haha. What the hell is different with my Evo??

Try this version. It's modified by vaelpak. Right after I used this version of WT when I was on vaelpak, I switched over to CM7, and tethering worked. Maybe it's just coincidence, but it worked right after I used this version.
On my SD card, I have two 'android tether' related folders. One of them is 'android.tether', and it contains a file called fw_bcm4329.bin. The other is 'androidtether', and it also contains the same fw_bcm4329.bin. I'm not sure why I have two folders, both containing the same binary file, but I'm leaving them both there lol.
Also, I just uninstalled the version that I had been using, which I got from the market. I installed this vaelpak version of wireless tether, and again, it continues to work fine for me. This was on salvage mod. I just restored a CM7 backup that I had, and wireless tether continues to work perfectly for me??!!

Barnacle Wifi Tether not working on GB?

I was rooted and running Barnacle just fine in Froyo, then upgraded to GB. Now it does not seem to be working. Im rooted in GB still (just be a different program) and it shows Barnacle has root access.
It goes and says NAT is unavail, restarting NAT.. and nothing after that.
Heres a screen shot of what its saying:
Guess this is a common error with GB
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/dr...e-any-roms-dont-have-wifi-tether-blocked.html
Seems like GB has a built in wifi/hot spot thats taking over control of the avail network.
So far i havnt come across a fix
Also tried Open Garden to no avail

I used the latest android-wifi-tether (beta 6). In the settings go to "Device Profile" and change it to Motorola Droid X, then connect. After you connect toggle the Pro into airplane mode and toggle it off again. You should be able to surf and will not get the "Verizon" pay wall. I know its one added step, but it's a whole lot easier and cheaper then paying $20+ more a month...

Yes you are correct. But with Verizon you have to pay an additional, I believe, $20 a month for the built in feature.
If you're rooted there are apps put there where you can do it for free at your own risk.
I did find a solution to the problem a week or two ago. But last Friday I upgraded to the Razr. And will have to find a work around for that phone haha.

[Q] Which free tethering method should I pursue?

In reading through this forum all day, I am somewhat stuck on my next goal -> free tethering.
SO I currently have root access on my epic 4g touch (sprint) via the method under [ROOT][NCIQ][EG30/EG31/EK02] Auto root your existing stock ROM (w/o ODIN/ROM Flash). I took options A and C for CWM. Now I'm trying to determine which method is best for obtaining the free tethering/hotspot.
1. I have been looking at 2 in particular; one is posted by qbking - in a video dated back to Sept 2011. It is meant for the epic 4g touch although he demo'ed this on an epic 4g - and now all of the comments mention that it didnt work for the 4g touch so I'm somewhat afraid that this method doesnt work at all... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQpIxUxnCqU
2. Then there is a mod posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1390304 which I have to admit is more confusing than anything Ive seen thus far with the number of zips in the post and no clear instruction on installing any of them. It also looks like I'd have to flash my rom in this case?
I'm really curious if the hotspot can be obtained without flashing. if you have recommendations/experience in this portion, please let me know.
I rooted my phone and haven't done anything to it other than that for the sole purpose of tethering. I use an app called "WiFi tether" ver. 3.1 beta6 and it works great. I use it at work with a laptop to stream NFL Sunday ticket. Not supposed to have internet access at work for "security reasons"

There's wifi tether like everyone else said and there's also Wireless Tether app you can get from the Market.
The Hotspot hack now works with 4G.

No, you just flash the version that corresponds to your radio. It will replace the Sprint Hotspot application to remove the checks to see if you paid for hotspot. As such it is probably the easiest option than messing with Android-wifi-tether. (I have issues with it disconnecting after a while, etc etc)

Google wifi tether should only be used when the carrier has completely removed tethering from your devices settings menue.
Metropcs does this with their smartphones, so everyone on metropcs uses code.Google.Com wifi tether.

Oh this is the exact question I'm looking for and hope you can verify before I perform it. I want to use wifi tether for root users, is that the one you have. It says it requires root and a "netfilter enabled kernel" Now do I have to install a new kernel or the stock kernel have this and all I need to do is get root and install the app?
I have the galaxy s2 for sprint with latetest firmware as of today's date. It says d710.10 for hardware and gingerbread.ek02.
I'm double checking becuase I'm seeing so many people flashing the wrong roms and messing up their phones. Don't want that to happen to me.
