Like all others I dropped my s3 and cracked my screen. Question is can I buy a used s3 off of ebay with a bad esn and just swap over the mother board or will this not work. Is their any cheaper alternative than just replacing the screen?
you could do that, but I believe that getting a new screen is cheaper, and less risky, another phone might already have scratches on the screen. (I have an S3 for sell, PM me if you like to buy it)
You could do the motherboard switching but you would need to activate it over the phone because the ESN would be different than the one on the phone. Plus it will have a different activation. I did it back on the E4GT.

is the esn on the motherboard? If i transferred my motherboard (which is working fine and also my phone is fine) to another s3 I would still need to activate it?
Maybe?

I can get you a replacement housing complete with EVERYTHING intact for $20 and yes this is authentic and from Samsung meant to be used as a replacement housing. Technically from Sprint.

By the way, ESN IIRC is registered to ONLY the radio on the device which is one of the 2-3 things you transfer from old housing to new housing. Replacement housings I get come with EVERYTHING including display, digitizer, glass, plastic panels and even spare camera lens. Does not come with battery or rear battery door unless you ask me beforehand which has never cost me extra.

Actually if you're doing that it should be fine. If you can call, use data, and text all on the original number then you're fine.

If you're good with tools you can swap just the glass. It takes a while and very delicate, you have to heat and peel the gorilla glass from the digitizer. Slip and crack the digi you're buying a replacement front assembly. Tuscani sells the front lcd/digi/glass and bezel for $130 I think it was and its a 20 minute swap. Replacing the glass only runs about $30 but takes anywhere from 1-4hrs depending on how good you are
I like to break stuff!
Like I said, if anyone needs one I would be glad to assist you. $20 and around 7-10 minutes of your time and you get literally a brand new device besides a couple of internal parts and battery.

Im just not good when it comes to glue but tools and screws are not a problem.
You have message by the way :good:
That's all it is. For example, take off your batter cover, you will see screws around the edges. Unscrew those. Take the surrounding plating and the upper and lower assemblies(Camera assembly at top of devuce on the back abd the bottom assembly on the rear of device...extremely easy as they just pop right off with the lift of a pinky). Unplug radio wire. Then place the upper and lower assemblies onto the new housing and screw everything into the new housing and done.

I guess the combination of cold pavement and face down is also bad for phones. Surprisingly the case stayed on and tried to do its job. Now I have to try to get the local Sprint store to do a screen replacement. Thank goodness for insurance but damn waiting for them to open.
Not sure if I should be happy or not that my SGP Steinhall Oleophobic screen protector isn't in yet.
Anyway, you guys know if they will try to push a refurb phone on me or just do the screen replacement?
ouch that's gota hurt
From what I've read in the forums it cost more to replace the screen than to do a warranty replacement. And a Sprint repair tech said Sprint doesn't have the screens.

Thats what I am afraid of. Anyone know of a link online to order it from. I would rather do it myself if necessary so I don't have to lose my phone setup. I know it is restoring a backup once i flash something else back onto it but ugh. Just want to keep it.
If you have the total equipment protection you can file the claim here:
https://portal.phoneclaim.com/Login.aspx
I used it to replace a cracked screen and got the replacement the next day.
Blasted from my EpicTouch con XDA-PA y Pibes Chorros
Yeah that is what the store directed me too as well. No replacement screens online yet either so oh well. Ordered and waiting now.

But mine was a more or less a screen defect. It had a heavy blue tint at off angles.
I was told that they aren't allowed to open the phone up for repairs for 3 months according to the agreement they have with Samsung. beyond a reset and battery replacement, they either give you a new phone for software malfunction or for physical damage refer you to an insurance claim. My buddy works in this repair center and tried to look for the screen part but nothing. I don't mind. I picked up a cheap screen protector to keep the glass shards out of my fingers til the replacement comes in. No biggie.

Huh, weird, dunno about that. But they swapped out mine pretty quick.
Sucks what happened to yours, I've always been paranoid about dropping mine, seeing this doesn't help my paranoia at all...
At Sprint we will get you a free replacement for defects if you have TEP - but if it's your fault (like a cracked screen, or water damage) you have to pay a deductible to the insurance. You can call them and find out at 1-800-584-3666. Sorry, man.
Same thing happened to me. Phone fell about 3 feet, the screen cracked, but mine wouldn't even turn on. The Sprint repair store wouldn't touch it. The Corporate store wouldn't swap it out and I had to file a claim. The good part is, Asurion sent me a brand new phone instead of a refurb. ifixit.com did a tear down on the E4GT and the Super AMOLED + screens are fused to the midplane. They had to use tons of heat and guitar picks to get it off, which will make for an expensive replacement part or repair since it is fused like that. Sprint DOES NOT replace screens anymore under TEP which is unfortunate. I guess it got too expensive, so now if you crack your screen you will be referred to Asurion.
Sorry to hear that. Any hardened glass is going to be more scratch resistant, but more brittle as a result.
Howdy all!
Not sure if this would be considered the proper place for this but I figured I'd give it a shot.
I cracked the front glass of my S3. It sucks, as the part is very scarce in the US currently. I have found a few replacement parts on Amazon, but the starting price is about $210, a far cry from the $50 I used to pay for my EVO. I know its still early in the game, but does anyone know of a seller that has these replacement touchscreens for something a little more reasonable than 1/3 of the price of a brand new phone?
EDIT: Has anyone tried replacing just the glass, with one of these? http://www.ebay.com/itm/White-Digit...ultDomain_0&hash=item5895542a9b#ht_2317wt_906
Thanks!
Sorry but that might be the best you can get it for, for the gs3, because LCD replacements for the t-mobile sgs 2 is still $149 + shipping as the sgs 1 (Samsung vibrant) is still about $80 plus shipping (both on amazon) and these are all the cheapest prices I've found on the net over the span of a couple weeks of research.
So yeah, $210 is probably the best you're gonna get right now

$269 for the international white and blue.
$219 for the atnt red.

You're most probably correct, especially after seeing all the responses here regarding it. Easy and cheap though preferred, is not always the best approach unfortunately.
Well this happened to mine on Sunday, i looked for every way possible as mine was only the front glass too. It is possible to replace just the front glass but it is very very difficult to do! you have to use a heat gun or a hair dryer to separate the glass front from the lcd/digitizer video here http://galaxys3root.com/galaxy-s3-root/how-to-replace-broken-lcd-screen-on-galaxy-s3/
I just got it repaired on Monday for £150 as a local phone shop had everything in stock and did it n a hour there and then, insurance wanted £100 excess so didn't bother with it. Anyway good luck and i hope you sort it soon as i know the feeling and it sucks

I know how you feel, it sucks how expensive it is, it dropped 1 inch from my pocket to the cement. Luckily it only cracked a little in the corner, so I won't replace it for now until prices come down.
amoled screen have less layers than normal LCD's its because the amoled pixels are infused within the glass.
so they have to be replaced together
I ordered one from this seller on August 3 and receive it 5 days later they ship same day after place an order. I installed it and work fine looks original.

after seeing this video, I think the best thing to do is not let your S3 dropped.
So I got a T999 T-Mobile Galaxy S3 off Craigslist for $80 with a shattered screen (lights up and makes noise but no image). Thought I'd make a thread of my progress/observations.
First, the phone.

Guy got it for Christmas, broke three days later. Came with original box.
16 GB T999
Took the phone apart to get to screen assembly and noticed this.
I thought I'd been had, until I noticed this.
So, an i747 is just re-purposed to being a t999? I've been searching other threads to find info but haven't found any.
(Either way I use T-Mobile, so as long as it is a t999 all should be well...just thought that it odd to have an AT&T model # in a T-Mo phone.)
Can't wait to finally get a working Galaxy S3, got lucky in much the same way when I got my Galaxy S2 (i777) on the cheap by just replacing the screen (which I then sold for my Galaxy Nexus, which I sold to save up for one of these). Looks like I'll be getting to pocket a lot of that.
Exploded view, found a ribbon cable labeled GT-I9300...good to know parts are so cross-compatible on this model.
AFAIK some parts are just stamped that way.

Nope, as with any Samsung device, dis-assembly is quite straightforward. Literally a single screw holding the mobo, everything else held in place by ribbon cable tension and the adhesives holding those down. 10 screws around the outside perimeter holds all the plastic covers on.
Aside from the heavy adhesive holding my i777 S2's screen, dis-assembly was about the same simplicity...Apple devices on the other hand make you solve riddles to get them apart (not to mention multitudes of specific-sized screws).
...another reason why Samsung has my vote over Apple (had every iPhone from original to 4S...still didn't come close to my GS2/GNex).
And every one of those phones (with exception to GNex) was purchased broken...tis a sort of fun hobby

The only stickers I've seen so far are moisture indicators and like...1 strip of tape over the Wi Fi antenna cable.
Looks interesting. Had to take mine apart a little while back because my half retarded German Shepherd knocked a Coke over on it It was a pretty straightforward process, and I don't recall any warranty stickers on mine either.
But luckily it isnt a lot worse than it could of actually been, as you can see from the pics, the damage is done in the bottom left of the pic (or bottom right of the physical phone if that is how you want to consider it). Apologies on the quality of pictures as all I had to take the picture was my galaxy tab 10.1.

I, too, have slightly broken glass on my phone and have been considering replacing just the glass, but the display, digitizer and glass seem to be glued together on these AMOLED screens and I heard separating them isn't easy.
I might just play the 180€ and get it repaired at there official service center :/
It's much like the S3. I used the screen replacement videos from them as a guide. The key is to use lots of heat and work slowly. It comes off just fine from the digitizer. Getting it started can be a bit difficult to get under the glass, but once it's started just gently progress along and use a blow dryer on low heat. They are glued together, but can be separated with heat and slowly prying them off. Watch the S3 videos and you'll get the idea. I couldn't find and galaxy nexus videos but the S3 ones worked fine. At one point everyone said the same thing about them that you can't replace just the glass too can they are glued together. But they're quite separable.

Thanks, I will look into it some more. I just can't really justify spending the 180 I was quoted for to get the work done by some repair centre or spend 120 on the actual screen and digitizer and then doing it myself when this phone is hardly worth that price.

Contact Oneplus?
Sell it cheap to someone else for parts and get a new one?

actually replacing the glass in not as easy as you may think. the screen is stuck with some sort of glue to the glass. in removing it with a heat gun and the sticky residual there are chances that you can chip your screen or something. its better to get it done from a trusted shop.

DONT REPLACE THE GLASS ONLY REPLACE THE ENTIRE LCD. trust me replacing the glass only will never be the same, the display will not be as responsive due to the glue used and sometimes the glue may be noticeable by just looking at the phone. call one plus in NY and see how much is the repair. or if they sell the lcd by itself for self repair. Since you're an XDA head, we can work something out where you just pay me for the actual display and shipping and I'll waive the repair fee. I think it's against the rules to do business on the board so just PM me.

actually replacing the glass in not as easy as you may think. the screen is stuck with some sort of glue to the glass. in removing it with a heat gun and the sticky residual there are chances that you can chip your screen or something. its better to get it done from a trusted shop.

I'm a diy person myself. But agree on the glass only replacement. Did it with a flat faced LCD on my note 3 and it was never the same. Never again, it's either the whole LCD/digitizer combo or live with it for me.
