Phone keeps shutting off - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Over the past couple weeks my sons phone started to have a couple issues. These are the first issues we've experienced since we got the phone when it was first released. The first two problems were that it started dying real fast and I mean in a couple hours with zero usage. Before the problem started we were getting 15-20 hours with moderate usage. The second issue was that at any point in time it would shut down and it would take a charger to be plugged in to restart it (even though it wasn't dying).
When this started it was completely stock. Since then here are the steps I've taken...
1) checked battery stats, Android OS was always on top at around 70%. No rogue apps
2) loaded CPU Spy, the phone seemed to be sleeping normally
3) remove sd card
4) shut off wifi
5) factory reset (didn't stop the issues)
6) went into the stock recovery and wiped data and cache (I've since heard this may cause an issue in the stock build)
7) loaded a custom recovery (Agat)
8) loaded CM10 (this seems to have fixed the problem with it dying quickly)
And it just shut off out of no where. Is there something else I can try?

Have you checked the battery. Take it out and place on flat surface and spin it if it spins get a new battery.

Lol, embarrassingly that's the one thing I haven't done.

Maybe I'm wrong but I read that he flashed Agats kernel then flashed CM 10. I believe you can't use a TW based Kernel on CM builds? That may cause serious problems.

He was having issues on stock. Then he loaded up custom roms.
But yeah check the battery that's what the quick dying might be.
Mines started dying even tho it said it had 70-80% battery left. Bought a new battery problem solved.

I'm going to head out and pick up a new battery once the Sprint store open this morning. Then I'm planning on bringing it completely back to stock and hopefully that takes care of it.
My wife is threatening me that if we need to get him a new phone that she'll give him her iphone 4 and buy an iphone 5 for herself. I need to make sure I get this phone back up and running properly so that doesn't happen. lol

I went to the Sprint store this morning and he didn't even have to test the battery to know it's defective. I guess batteries get swollen at a certain point and from that point on it will hold less and less of a charge and start shutting down spontaneously as it gets worse. Needless to say I have another Samsung battery on order and will be getting this back to as stock as I can.
Thanks for your help and the headslap!

Phone turning off by itself

Hey guys!
I have a serious issue here!
In the middle of the day, out of nowhere the phone turn itself of; i never detected that moment; all i know is that when i pick up the phone i find it turned off.
At first that happened when i was still running the stock ROM 4.0.4 unrooted or anything. The phone was in my pocket so i said maybe i touched unintentionally the power button and i dropped it.
However the last 2 days i am running a custom ROM JB CM10 flashed cleanly completely!
I am suspecting that this is no software problem cuz i know with software issues i elk have mostly reboots and not shotdowns.
I suspect that this is a hardware issue, most probably a battery issue; since after i return the phone ON, i can see the battery at 20 or 30% lower than what it should be!
I have wiped battery stats (i know that maybe does nothing) and wiped cache and dalvick and still nothing!
Any ideas/help/suggestions are welcome guys!
Thank you!

[Q] cm10 battery issue

I have been running cm10.0.0 on my i747 gs3 for a few months now and never noticed a battery issues until recently. Im all of a sudden getting very poor battery performance. (see attached screenshot). Im not sure what is causing it, but it is draining like crazy. Please does anyone know whats causing this? feel free to ask any questions because i need to get this figured out. Thanks for any and all help!
Looks like you had what I had (a bunch of other people too). I couldn't figure out what the problem was so I exchanged it at the place I bought it from.
It wasn't an app. Better Battery Stats said it was in deep sleep. I charged to 100% and left it idle with everything off, like data and gps, and woke up to 20% left.
If anyone responds to this thread saying "battery not calibrated", "turn so and so off when not in use", "use BBS", "flash a new kernel or ROM", anything cliché, they haven't experienced what we been through yet. *IT'S NOT THAT SIMPLE.*
There's something seriously wrong with AT&T's version of the S3 and no one has taken noticed yet. Noticed all the recent battery threads lately? All say phones are hot and unexplained battery drain. Something is going on and the usual solutions aren't working.

hmmm interesting... this afternoon i made a backup of all my apps and data and booted into recovery. I did a factory re-set and re flashed the same rom as well as gapps. I cleared the cache and dalvik and reloaded everything back up. In the last 6 hours, i have used about 33% battery and over 2 hours of screen time. So it is definitely much much better! Fingers crossed it remains this way!

Should I upfrade to 4.1.2 ?

it does.... theres some sort of bug with the Kernel if not done right or something. I didn't use my tmobile note 2 too much before the update (since i was still on Sprint at the time) but when i did start using it, battery life was good, i then upgraded, and with VERY minimal use, everything ato turned off, and being aware of when i had bads signal so i can switch to just wifi, it would last just as long as my gf's Nexus 4.... BUT i wiped EVERYTHING in recovery (Data, System, cache, etc.) did a clean install, and it works MUCH better
Mine seems to be doing well after the update.
same data speeds at my office as prior to the update.
Question to the people who have battery life issues. Do you power cycle your phone?
I got in the habit of power cycling my previous android devices some time ago. Usually in the morning when i first get up ill power cycle it, then while im getting ready for work it has time to settle down. (refering to the media sync bug that was on my GS2 and GS3) Yesterday i forgot to power cycle my note 2 and i noticed that i did have higher then normal battery drain. But that was on day 2. The day before, which was after a power cycle it was just fine. Next day with no power cycle coming off over night charge it drained a lot faster throughout the day. I power cycled this morning and going to see if its back to normal good battery life by the end of today.
So my question is, do the people who are NOT having an issue with battery life power cycle once every 24 hours?
Do the people who ARE having battery issues NOT power cycling and are on say, day 2, 3, 4 or longer since a power cycle?

Power Cycling as in just turning off and on after a few minutes? I did do that, not sure about others. I also treated it as a whole new ROM in regards to battery and stats taking time to "settle", but the battery was still bad until i did the absolute clean install
Correct, i power off my phone, leave it off anywhere from a minute to five or ten minutes.
usually i wake up, power off phone, brush teeth and put in contacts, turn on phone, take a shower and get ready for work, pull phone off charger right before i walk out the door.
I did notice worse battery yesterday. I also had a lot less usage yesterday then i did the previous few days and weekend. the only thing i did different was use the phone less and forget to power cycle it.

Haven't had any issues with the update. Speeds are great, no lag all. Nothing is wrong. The people who seem to have problems were either rooted before the update or tried flashing the update manually via a downloaded package either here on xda or somewhere online. My note is still perfect!

Battery Life TERRIBLY sucks

My battery life on 4.3 stock was 8 hours screen time (half brightness I believe)
Rooted and flashed a custom rom and kernel 7hr30min screen time
Flashed different kernels dropped to 6hr max screen time (without factory reset)
After installing Xposed and many many modules the screen time kept dropping to like 5hr to 6hr
Updated to KitKat and rooted 4:30min to 5 HOUR MAX screen time PLUS phone got hot ALOT OF TIMES
***RIGHT NOW*** Flashed a custom ROM HyperDrive with Colonel X latest and Compulsion latest BOTH 3hr30min to 4hr30min MAX screen on (EVEN with Jovy23's kernel settings that got him AMAZING battery life with ConservativeX governor - It still did not fix the issue not even a little - I still like Compulsion which was awesome when I was on jellybean) :'(
Same settings for all the above set ups. Whenever I flash a ROM I ALWAYS clean flash and I DO NOT have Titanium Backup NOR do I use any other restoration app. I tried to clear and format every partition. I formatted SD card. SAME issue. I am frustrated by the battery life; it DOES NOT last me a day when on stock unrooted it was easily 8 hours. Also I do not use auto-brightness cuz the sensor uses more battery, so it was on half-brightness)
Someone please help me. The worst thing about a phone is the battery life. I usually browse Chrome and Facebook and for these simple tasks my battery dies quickly (WTH?!). I can't even think about gaming (and I REALLY want to GAME), but I know the battery life would die so much.
Is my phone defective? I tripped Knox. I already had a warranty replacement in like the first 2 weeks cuz of Knox issues stock. WTH is wrong with my phone. I want to format and clean EVERY SINGLE THING on my phone to get it the 8 hours screen on time I used to get. No matter what I do my battery life right now WILL NOT go above 4hr30min to 5hrs screen on. I used to watch Netflix for quite a while back on my stock Jellybean / rooted Jellybean days, now it dies extremely fast.
What should I do? I was thinking of flashing AOSP so it cleans up whatever Touchwiz and Samsung related is on my phone and then re-flash touchwiz so everything is set up correctly. I tried to use the mega-wipe script for a certain Note 3 model but it stopped at like 10% to 20%, so that route did not go well (I manually wiped everything data, internal, etc, before flashing many ROMs and this problem persisted).
I cannot do anything good on my phone until this issue is fixed. I hate clean-flashing and setting up things (I think titanium backup and stuff screws up your system) all the time. I cannot game, I cannot download good apps, I cannot do anything that is not online based or can be backed up online. Apparently my battery state is stated as "good" on the system.
"... All of this in under one day..." Give it a few cycles over the next few days. It'll change. I've been using HyperDrive with ColonelX with the conservative governor tweaked for performance. Can't really say much about the battery life since I have the 10000mAh battery.

Dude, if it's all under one day. You need to let a ROM and kernel set In. You can't drive a car without wheels. Just give it 2 or 3 days it will begin to get better. That's what I think too but I give it some days to stabilised if you will . Then my battery goes from normal to good to great. It won't right away start getting great battery life. Unless you have a kernel your phone don't like and flash another it does like battery life improvements where almost instant at least in my case. Like now I'm getting Ok battery life. It's not the best. But it holds. I might switch kernels tonight to spice things up.

I meant the right now part is under a few days. Idk why i said all under one day (it was late night). This has beena problem since February at least
Trust me I know you have to let a ROM and Kernel set in but my phone keeps working harder than its supposed to. Screen off battery is good, so wake locks are not the problem. The problem is cpu wise something is messed up that it puts my cpu to drain huge amounta of battery
Even you tried another or different ROM still happens?

The rom and kernels might be the one messing your battery life, since your battery is in good state, but why not try replacing a battery if you have an extra and see the results...

How do you find that out?
There is an app that can report this value. The premise is that certain cpu's have different values which indicate how the cpu will perform. The problem is, the same cpu can over time end up reporting different values which pretty much means it is not really a set hardware value and most likely means nothing.
You can find the large thread about it if you look, but it was pretty much debunked as a really value at the time.
first download the new rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2709867
put it on a sd card
make sure you have a custom recovery
1 go to setting back up and recovery do a reset from there
2 let the reset be done then restart the phone and go to recovery
from recovery do a full wipe factory restet
3 install the zip from the sd card
4 pick the apps you want with aroma installer and install compulsion kernel
4 finish installation and boot up
set up the phone and enjoy it bro.....

Nice battery life enhancer.
You have to let the rom settle before you can get accurate battery life akin to the rom and kernel. Trust me I know this as a fact. I have been flashing roms like crazy since the days of the Samsung admire and the rom takes days to settle.

You made sure to toggle allows allow scanning off?
Toggle either power-saving or GPS only under location?
Power saving mode if applicable?
Turning of haptic feedback?
The always allow scanning seems to be the number one battery killer for me. I turned that off and noticed immediately better battery life. Almost akin to an extra minute per one percent, which adds up.

Yep, did all that stuff from day 1 back on 4.3. Updating to 4.4 was the most frustrating thing ever. Many people here report great battery life with 4.4, but many like myself had it slashed in half upon upgrading. It ruined an otherwise perfect phone.

Disaster suddenly

Hi all: I have been posting in the CM11 ROM for this device but I figured I would post my issues here and see if anyone has any insight or experiences.
I was on CM11 for 4 days with stability, speed and life was great. Last night I randomly got a reboot when looking at twitter. Fine, no big deal. 2 minutes later it happened again. Odd. I went into the play store and then it froze. I had to research and found out how to reboot it. Once rebooted, it would restart again. So, I went into TWRP, wiped Everything and then refreshed the ROM. Within 1 minute it froze again.
I flashed Stock and sure enough it froze on me. Noe I am annoyed and went to bed and figured I would deal with it this am. I plugged it in last night under 10% battery. Woke up 8 hours later and its at 14%. 2 hours since and its now at 17%. Clearly something is wrong.
Full disclosure---i bought a best buy geek squad refurbished unit and have done so many times with tablets with no problems. I am still within my 45 day return window and will probably just exchange for a new one since the refurbished price is the same as it was. Sadly, I wish they would give me a new one for the black friday price.
Has anyone had such experiences or have a clue what went wrong? Thanks
How did you flash the ROM? Tell each steps on how you flashed it. Did you mess with the CPU clock speed or anything? Did you also have any battery problems readings before flashing? I did a dirty flash of cm11 in which led to problems later, so I'm now on stock rooted and still works fine with no freezes. Probably tarp crashed? Happened to me.
I rooted via odin. I them used twrp manager to get the recovery and did a total clean flash. Wiped everything including system. NO I did not have any battery issues nor did I mess with cpu clock speed ( don't even know how ). All I did was use xposed to try the mutliwindow solution and downloaded lux and a material theme. Nothing out of the ordinary I don't think.

Either the battery is bad or could be something with the software. The only time when mine reboots is when I use to Much ram and it freezes. Other than that no problems.
I plugged it into another outlet. The outlet I always use charges me iPad and note 4 without a problem. I left for an hour and sure enough I got home and the tablet was at 100%. Yay. I started downloading my apps and noticed while still plugged in, the battery was at 95%. Odd. I took out the charger and Bam, rebooted. Off to best buy.
Wow it restarted and now shows 7 percent. I'll let you know what bb says.

Similar experience
I had a similar experience with my 2012 Nexus 7,it turned out that the connections between the charging port, battery and device were all faulty. They weren't soldered together properly when the device was manufactured (not as rare a condition as we are lead to believe either, regardless of manufacturer). I was lucky the I was able to take the device apart to check the problem without leaving any evidence that I had opened it, and I was able to exchange it. So from my experience, that kind of error always appears to relate to some form of battery issue. Also had it happen to me with a Galaxy S4, however it wasn't anything to do with the device itself, it was damaged connections on the battery.
