Hello Community. My dear wife is thinking about getting me the Nexus for my birthday. I am currently rocking the Revolution and generally speaking I love it!! But I miss the pure Android experience...
I have a couple of questions before buying and I hope this is the type of community that will take a couple of moments to answer them..
1. Will the android wi-fi tether work with this phone? (from here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/)
2. Any problems with not having an external SD card?
Ok, really those are my only real questions. I'd take any feed back about personal performance and negatives and positives. Specificially to the verizion CDMA version of the phone.
(I have started reading through the forums, but there are 101 pages and I can't read that fast, I am working on it.)
Thanks in advance and I look forward to participating in this very busy community
I haven't tested the tether but I actually like not having an SD card. It should be included but only using one storage source is handy and makes everything easier to maintain.
The LTE has 32gb. That's more then my 16gb SD I used to use... and more then enough. Tether works but I'm not sure about that specific one.
LTE EX Galaxy Nexus - CM9 AOKP
Asus Transformer - Revolver
1. Yes it will work, I have tried it out multiple times and have no problems connecting to multiple devices with 10+ Mb's.
2. Not really, as the other poster said it is kind of nice to not have to worry about it but coming from my old phone was kind of a pain being that I had to move everything to my computer then over to my Nexus but that is my only gripe.
You will love this phone.
1. It works for me as well.
2. I thought I would hate it but I actually like it. It is nice when my phone is plugged into my computer that my phone can still access what is stored on the "SD card" partition. It was always annoying on the Droid X to wait for it to get access to everything again or when someone called and my ringtones wouldn't play. After I do a nandroid backup, I copy it to my computer just in case I somehow wiped that partition.
My wife had the Revolution and I upgraded her to a Razr. 2 days ago she dropped the Razr in the toilet (we are hoping it will come back to life) and had to revert to using the Revo. She hates it! The Nexus would be a MASSIVE step up. You will not be disappointed!!
Android 4.0 has built in wifi tether that works perfectly. I have yet to have a problem with it.
32GB internal memory is fine. Not having a physical SD doesn't really matter cause 32 is more than enough.

Thanks Everyone for their input. Now to get my wife to get in the car and go over to VZW and get me that phone... ....after that...time to play with all the roms!!
I've read a news article on Pulse that this phone won't have much developer support due to Samsung keeping some files locked out for developer support, and that Cyanogenmod won't be developing on this phone due to that.

I don't understand the situation fully, but it sounds like Samsung has committed to releasing the source, so I am hoping that means it will get Cyanogenmod and good dev support.

Interesting..hate Touchwiz but it does have some nice features.

This might be a dumb question, I've just begun researching this but it concerns development. I'm considering jumping from my Verizon contract to AT&T for this phone, based on the virtual certainty that the Verizon version will have a locked bootloader. Are AT&T phones locked on a case by case basis, or is it already a given that this phone will release with devs able to mess with it? I don't want to play a waiting game like the S3 on Verizon despite their huge number of users.
From my understanding there will be NO cm support on any further samsung devices..But then I seen this? so who knows...lol

Pretty sure that is a port, not the actual CM team doing the work
i know cm10 is cool but i dont understand why people would want this on the note 2 since all the features that make the note 2 are TW related but thats just me.

Personally I agree, but this is xda and people will want to mod. I'll be rooting, but I doubt I'll flash any custom ROM's.
My order is in and I agree,
UNLESS...the many features including the S Pen etc. are ported to new ROMS I don't think I'll flash...
BTW ...anyone know of a cure for ORD

oh i will be doing the same ill flash customs roms just TW ones as i want to keep the features like spen and all that jazz.
on older devices cm was awesome cause it was fast but now as the phones are more powerful then ever i dont see a need to run them. just me tho
Same. I don't think I'll be flashing any Non-TW ROM on the Note 2. I've been flashing AOKP and CM10 on the Note 1 so I've been missing the TW S-Pen features.
This is why im glad i got the N7100 model, just sayin

Pretty much all I know is what I read on rootzwiki, but I thought that they were not going to drop all Samsung devices, but only the ones that used Exynos CPU's due to inadequate source or documentation or something. But then I think Samsung has committed to releasing this, so hopefully that means Cyanogenmod will not drop them anymore, but I haven't heard anything official.

I have to admit a lot of the features they added do seem genuinely useful, but I still think I would give them up for Cyanogenmod.
It is my understanding (from what I have read about the Note 1, etc) that android natively supports stylus input since ICS, and so it should be able to still work in Cyanogenmod. It is just that there are very few apps that really make use of it besides the ones from Samsung, Hopefully this will improve over time though.
I am with you guys, I personally will root the device and debloat it for now... But stock rom right now seems to be very nice..lol...
We will have alot of great roms coming out either way with or without cm support. I know a couple devolpers coming here shortly and there work is awesome.
There will be plenty of support. I will be working on a few things myself once I get the device. I helped start the CM development in the original note.
And the reason why we run AOSP vs all the craptastic useless stuff Samsung adds its because I personally like vanilla Google. Samsung changes to much. Android in stock form is beautiful. Just my opinion not trying to start a flame war.
If I run stock it will be stripped down deodexed and debloated likke a mofo.
If I decode to build an device tree and attempt to build CM I will. With the open support from Samsung it won't be difficult.
I know of a few developers coming this way also we will have plenty of support I'm sure

Normally I agree, and my S3 i definitely agree. But this phone is built around samsungs incorporation of the s-pen and related features. If AOKP roms ignore the s-pen, theyre useless to me.. why even get this phone then?
I think the most popular roms on this phone will be stock based, debloated and feature rich roms, much like Ariel rom for the ATT Galaxy s3 out now.

Touchwiz is hideous.
Don't get me wrong, Samsung has done some great things with the multitask and S-pen, but AOSP Jellybean makes Touchwiz look like a featurephone UI from 2003.

This is exactly how I feel about it. I will root it, but I'm going to take my time about flashing a custom ROM. I want the full functionality of that stylus as designed - as an old Palm girl, this is one of the main reasons I'm getting the Note 2. That plus the excellent GPS - coming from a woefully awful Captivate GPS. I had a Garmin iQue 3600, the Palm OS GPS unit, and am frankly spoiled by that integration. If only Garmin hadn't given up like that.....

im playing with a 4.4 aosp build that aospa made for nexus 7(fhd) and it is amazing. the speed difference and smoothness of the OS is a huge step foreword, even in an early quick build. Lol now ill be perfectly happy as soon as they finish making a flashable gapps, and my note gets an aosp build, 4.3 or 4.4, i want to remove touchwiz!!! and yes i know, i could try to build it, and i have been trying, but im obviously missing something, cause i cant get anything to boot that isnt touchwiz

The only probablem with and AOSP build on this phone is you are going to lose 80% of the functionality of this phone. The entire design of the phone, spen, sensors, automated services, etc are built around TW. Once TW is gone, all that is gone, and what is left is a fast processor with stock android and 2 or 3 spen apps that may or may not work on the Note 3
Essentially you want to take a Chevy Cobalt, and stick a Aftermarket engine in and and a Custom paint job. when it's said and done, it's still going to be a regular old Cobalt.

i dont use the spen, nor have i ever. i have bought every single note, based on screen size alone, and the development community. i prefer aosp, i dont comment on others desire to use tw and the many many features it offers. I just dont use them, so would prefer to have a rom that didnt have them. I i used multiwindow, or spen, etc, i wouldnt ask for aosp. If google released a note 3 sized device, i would buy it, but since they dont, i buy the note series and wait for our genius devs to make me cm roms to play with

A lot of us don't even use 98% of TouchWiz's gimmicky features - we just love the big display. I've had to install at least a half dozen apps AND Xposed just to get back a lot of what is built into CyanogenMod, for example.
One nice feature of TouchWhiz, though, is swiping down in fullscreen apps shows the hidden notification bar, but, 4.4 will have that feature stock now. Magazine, AirStuff, SmartFooScrollWhatever, SPen Blah... however, won't miss it. I'll probably miss the camera, since that's one of things that's often hit or miss when CM is first released on a new device. Oh, almost forgot: I'll definitely miss the nice InfraRed universal remote app that comes with the device, because the next best one costs $$$.

AH gotcha, In that case it makes sense. Always curious to find out why people purchase certain phones and then want to put Aosp on them.
And there are people working on AOSP, but until somebody gets a base, that is stable, we won't see it. From the guys i talk to, until the dev edition is released, Sammy is keeping a tight lid on it because they don't want another leak, like the S4 had
For the people that want it. I know it's not AOSP, but when I get this INT. RoM picked apart like i want it for the masses. I will work on a seperate Int. ROM that will have as much TW removed without breaking the phone. Or, just replace TW with a custom Launcher that will let me freeze all the garbage you guys don't care about.
aosp always takes time, bs tw roms, nothing to do with samsung, just a matter of devs having to create drivers, etc. im pretty sure one of the cm devs got cm running on the tmobile note 3, but it was to buggy to release.took a couple months for note 1,note 2, etc, we will have it soon. I may be wrong, but the nexus 5 may make the note 3 easier to get to aosp, because it uses the same chip set, so i think it may make things a bit smoother, not alot, but hey every bit helps!
only reasons i bought note 3 knowing nexus 5 was coming is
-5.7 screen
-sd card
-snapdragon 800
Wish someone could make an AOSP rom that has all of the s-pen features present. Would be the greatest of all time.

Same here. The Touch Wiz stuff is there to show off in commercials for the average brain dead consumer to think is cool. First thing I do is disable all the motion/eye crap. The pen is the only thing I miss, but I really only used that for Draw Something.
To all the guys that love aosp and not TW you should switch to the nexus 5. How could you not like any of the features? Camera and such? Having aosp is like ANY other phone as old as it gets. Stock Android is available for many devices. Note 3 has its own special set of features, removing it it's like a car with no wheels. Not one of kind anymore just like the phone your buddy has. 700 phone to look like a 200 device is just dumb. But that's yalls minds I guess.

Unfortunately i'm among those brain dead consumers that you speak of. I actually don't like Sammy software, and have not since the Behold For those that even remember that phone). I do on the other hand, use alot of the features that come with it as i'm an IT and it makes life easier for me to carry around the note 3 instead of a tab, and pen/paper, and lap top to be able to do what i can do with this.
Waiting CyanogenMod!
It's hard to lose wifi calling.

I think ultimately we(donate) and they(devs) make solutions. My proposition is to rebuild multi window via s command style, draw box you have a window, minimize you get a floating bubble(notifications on bubbles would make sense). I don't know how hard that would be to build for AOSP but Clean android and multi App Window would make for a very light weight and productive Rom. I believe something similar is soon to be released but not with this level of simplicity hardware/user wise. Plus I've seen multi window on aosp roms coming to play out so I can't imagine why this isn't feasible.
**update**
Omnirom is the name of the rom that will feature multi window on aosp.

Nexus 5 is a 5in screen.
Note 3 is a 5.7in screen.
And stock android can be modified to be far more unique than TW by the way.
And there are people who don't find any of these features useful, which was stated before. It will be a shame to loose the camera app though.
Nexus ONE
Nexus 5 has 0 microSD slots
Note 3 has 1 microSD slot
Plainly put I brought this phone for the hardware not the software. I would have brought this phone with out the spen and Samsung features lol

i dont want a 5" phone without sd, i want a 5'7 inch screen, with sd, and the note 3 looks way better then the n5. I dont like touchwiz,i hate it, but i love samsung hardware. The beauty of android is choice, why complain that other people have a opinion that isnt the same as yours?
Hello friends,
I am considering to buy a Note 2 to replace my main device as Sensation's touchscreen failed upon me.
I have few questions and I will appreciate your valuable replies.
1. Is Note 2 hardware good enough for next 2 years? I don't play much games and mostly Subway Surfer, Real Racing, MC4. Maybe half hour a month. But I want to be able to run all upcoming Android versions (atleast till developers support this device).
2. I read about SDS somewhere few months before. Is every Note 2 affected? I can't afford to have an expensive paper weight.
3. Does Note 2 have some dual-boot kernel?
4. Any ROM with Note 3 features esp that circle popup thing (or its my wishful thinking ) ?
5. Otherwise which would be recommended Custom Stock ROM, Recovery and kernel (dual-boot is definitely preferred)?
6. Any other major hardware bugs?
7. Btw, could someone guide me as how to check if I decide to buy my friend's old Note 2? How I check it for faults esp hardware? I am getting tempted as I could save some good money for other accessories
If there is something else which hasn't come to my mind but is important please feel free to add. I would be much obliged
Thank you so much !!!

1. Im fairly sure the phone will be extrwmwly adequate 2 years from now (obviously no one knows for sure) but the quad core processor is very capable of playimg the ges you mention. Although there are devices out that already have octo core processors, they all are only usong 4 at any one time and the differences are bare noticable at best.
2. As long as you are getting your phone from an authorized dealer then you shouldnt worry about SDS as that comes with older models and should come with a warrenty that would allow for replacement (one way or another)
3. The guy that built the (either S2 or S3) dual boot kernal was receiving donations to help him fund the tools to make it back in Jan-Mar of this year and I havent heard anything since... nor have I seen anything about it anywhere (atleast not on TMO LTE version. Youre more than welcome to search around a bit yourself)
4. Yes and No... there is but Team E (or whoever) has certain restrictions (really just permission only use) on alot of the Note 3 features that have been made for the Note 2... not really stone walling development, just protecting their hardwork and asking for proper credits, no alterations without reporting back to them, etc... it will be in every new rom eventually
5. Really a matter of who you ask and personal preference. I myself love Ptmr3s Jedi series (Master for TMO WiFi calling or X for other Note 2) but thats because 4.4 isnt out and I love the functionality that TW has for the particular device (samsung hasnt open sourced their SPen, MultiWindow, etc) so theyre not on non-TW BASED roms.. if you prefer AOSP, AOKP, or Paranoid Andriod, or PACMAN, etc than there are carious roms to pick and choose from. As for Kernal... each rom will provide (or users will post kernals that are compatible (I.e. dont use just any kernal on any rom... only what has been tested and proven).
6. Nothing major that isnt morw than an isolated incident at best... obviously of roms are newer or in nightly stages there will be bugs but nothing really hardware related... should mention sometimes on calls, the person your talking to will here themselves (echo) but that is sorta sparatic at best and most roms its not that bad and nothing major (again not really hardware related)
7. eMMC bug checker app. Download from play store, (look up the thread on here) and it will show you what to look for
Hope this helps...
Ultimately the Note should be continued to be developed for some time and able to withstand another 2 years of updates and new handsets. Already have 4.4 on TMO (omnirom - though not a daily driver) and carriers are pushing out stock 4.3 ASAP

Thank you for detailed reply.
So if I am buying new deice I wouldn't have that SDS bug. Right?
I am little surprised (and disappointed) that a powerful device like Note 2 doesn't have dual-boot functionality. That way I could run both Stock (I love various TW functionalities) and AOSP/AOKP/PA, etc
Could you plz provide link or name of the ROM with Note 3 features? Does it have that circle thing?

In my country we don't have carrier thing. We have to buy devices at full price
Find out the model of the note 2 amd visit that particular xda thread for further info on uograded custom roms amd updates... also (in case you dont know better... dont flash a rom designed for a dofferwmt device (model number) unless you know what to do.. youll lose cell service and have a bunch of stuff to do just to fix it (some people have ecpensive paper weights)
Good luck, I think the note 2 is a good decision on your part

Yes it's working verry good. I am using DN3 as we speak and it's a daily driver for me. The rom does not have yet note 3 camera and have a few minor bugs but nothing serious.
For me is as if a bot a note 3 and next update of the rom was anounced allready by the developers.

Never felt the need of dual boot and didnt heard of it either for note II.
Please excuse my english...not my native language

April seems like a time for us. Could be as late as the end of the month.
I may keep my 4.2.2 as I have it the way I like it. Bug free and clean.
Annoying the hell out of me checking for an update daily.....
If anyone has info please let me know, looking forward to unleashing notifications on my gear
Thanks
Lee

Good rule of thumb here, regarding his topic: if you have to ask, the answer is no. Believe me, as soon as any information is known, somebody will make a thread about it. But generally speaking, if all you see are threads about "when are we getting KK," the implication is that the answer is unknown. For the record, there is one thread regarding this in the Q&A section, and two threads in the General section, all on the front page.
What exactly does KK have that is so important? I really don't see why people are so worried about this update coming out. Will the experience of using the note 8.0 be dramatically different on 4.4? Someone please fill me in.
Me myself I'm not that anxious for it. But people like the OP would like to pair it with Gear devices.

It's not KK as much as it is some issues that I have running 4.1.2 on my AT&T variant. I still get the screen freeze bug which annoys me to no end. So yeah, I would like the upgrade so I don't have to deal with things that should've been working outside of the box.

Unless you want compatibility with Gear (which is not guaranteed) or think that 4.4.2 will fix some bug that's present in your current setup, the answer is that there is nothing substantially different. I am running official 4.4.2 on my Galaxy S4. Outside of the information bar icon color scheme and the fact that most apps can no longer access the SD card, nothing is better, faster, etc. It looks, feels, and performs exactly the same.

I guess I'm fortunate that I don't know what Gear is.
The only bug I'm having on 4.2.2 is the multi-window button disappearing sometimes even when the feature is turned on. Besides that, everything is working smoothly.
The new update is important for
1. Trim is included in 4.3 onwards..makes your tab faster
2. Air command for s pen ...unleashes the power of the s pen
3. Less ram consumption and faster on kit kat
4. Blue tooth LE. ..faster and lower battery consumption
5. New flatter icons and UI....consume less system space....faster device
6. Support for gear devices
The cons...
1. Knox bootloader
2. Sd card read and write issues
Both these cons can be solved by rooting and Dev help on xda

You would think so, but I haven't noticed any changes. Perhaps Samsung is not implementing it.

There has not been any indication that we would get this feature. Chances are, we will not. If the Note 2 gets it, then perhaps, but if not, we're not getting it for sure. As far as I know, the Note 2 does not currently have Air Command.

While the first part is true, the latter is not. And Samsung is not including ART in their ROM as well.

Sure, but the bluetooth device would have to support it as well AFIK. In addition, we don't know if the bluetooth radio in our tabs is actually even capable of low energy. Since the hardware in our device is relatively old, it may not be capable and therefore not support Galaxy Gear. Looking at the Galaxy Gear info page, the Note 2 is not listed as being supported. Rumors say that Gear support is coming to the Note 2.

Maybe for stock Android, but TouchWiz is not changing.

Maybe. See above for bluetooth LE

1. Maybe
2. Yes. Android 4.4.2 blocks 3rd party app access to the SD card. Easily fixed, but needs root like you said.
In summary, everything that everyone is hoping the get with the update will likely not happen, either due to hardware incompatibility or Samsung's unwillingness. Chances are, this update will be just like the update for the S4...updated status bar color scheme, a little better UI for multiwindow, and a version number bump.
I have a note 2 with leaked Samsung 4.4.2... running the ditto note 3 rom v4RC2
I have all note 3 apps (including air command) and s5 apps (including ultra power saving mode) on it.
Compatible with gear and has blue tooth LE working well even on official 4.3 on the note 2
Trust me. .. with what i have said. .
Also Trim is in the official 4.3 for note 2... you can check the app on titanium back up
If we get 4.3.. we can get all note 3 apps. .including air command... by mod
Once we get the update. . We can ask the e team to make the custom rom or mods for us. .. just needs 10 days

How about the ability to move applications and data onto the SD card? This is a biggie for me! I am running several mapping applications where the maps need to be stored locally, and they take up all my internal storage. It would be nice to use that empty 32gb SD card I purchased for this thing!

Yes but I think he was referring to a few posts about Google removing this functionality from 4.4.2. Not sure about it myself, but if it's true I read somewhere here on XdA that it can be fixed with root and an app from the Play Store.
