Greetings everyone! I'm a long-time lurker on this site, but have a bizarre problem that I need help with. I've searched all over, and haven't found anyone with this issue. Hopefully someone here can help! Ok, here it goes.
I purchased a used AT&T Galaxy S3, unlocked it, and put it on a T-Mobile prepaid plan. Everything works properly (calls, texts, data, etc.). But when I get to work I have the problem. While I'm in my building, the phone will show full bars for service, but it tells me it's not connected to any network when I try to do anything. If I try to make a call, it says for emergency calls only. Basically it acts the same as if the bill hadn't been paid, so they suspend your service while the phone still shows a signal. As soon as I leave the building, everything comes back as normal.
At first I was thinking the building was a dead zone, but it doesn't add up. Everyone else at work is always on their cell phones walking all around, and I've asked around to see if anyone else had these problems. Everyone says they have no reception issues at all, coming from people on various networks. Also, if it were a dead zone, I wouldn't think it'd be showing fluctuating signal bars. So I'm stumped, and desperately need to figure this out. Any ideas?

Would I be able to get a stock T-mobile rom without having to downgrade from 4.1? The only one I could find was for 4.0.4.

Ok, so an update on this situation. I flashed the T-Mobile stock firmware via Odin as suggested. I tried that with a combination of different modems, and nothing worked. I finally caved and bought a T-Mobile S3 T999, which arrived last night. On my way to work I had 4G just about the whole way, seemingly great service. As soon as I got inside, the problem was back. Five bars, no service (now saying not registered on network). I'm starting to wonder if it's the fault of the S3 in general having poor signal quality, or if it's T-Mobile service. I'm hoping maybe someone else has some new ideas to try out, or suggestions on if I should get a different phone or network.

To keep things short, I'm a noob to most of the phone things. I have a HTC Google (T-mobile) G2 which is unlocked and has an AT&T Sim card. Right now it's running the Virtuous Quattro RC3 ROM. I did a full wipe of the phone and the ROM has been working great (despite the camera problems), but I noticed the phone would disconnect from the AT&T service every 10 mins or so. After using the phone all day I realized that everytime I unlock the phone, the phone disconnects from the service for about 1 min and then re-connects along with random times while I'm using the phone. I didn't have this problem with the last ROM (Virtuous Unity). But I know it's a problem with the phone because my house has perfect reception and I have never had a connection problem in the house. However, I do not know what could cause this problem and not sure if it is the Radio since I have read about alot of people talking about that. I have no idea what radio I'm using now and have no idea how to find it.
In addition, the phone cannot recognize my phone number in the settings and requires me to program the voicemail number (which of course I cannot figure out). Both of these were automatically recognized by my previous Virtuous Unity ROM.
Anyway, if someone could tell me what is causing this connection issue on my phone and how to fix it, I would be sooo grateful!
Please let me know if you need more information.

That seems to be the easiest solution, but I have been using this unlocked phone with AT&T service for a month now and can't change service providers at the moment. Since I know the phone can work with AT&T I would rather try to find a solution to this problem.

I just did and it works perfectly in an AT&T phone and an Unlocked Nokia phone.
Try a different ROM.
Thanks for the advice. I started downloading the Affinity ROM to fix the problem. Just really liked the interface for the Quattro, but the camera bugs are annoying anyway.
you do realize with a tmobile branded g2 you won't have the proper cellular bands for high speed data? also you will need to change the apn to get things working. but yes changing radios may solve the dropped service I just couldn't tell you what radio works best, maybe test a few out... but as always be extra careful when playing with firmware

I got this phone from a friend when I badly needed a phone, but now that I can invest in a new phone, would any non-AT&T phones allow me to have high speed data? I don't want to pay for the smartphone plans, so I need something that is unlocked to stay on the cheaper plan.
I have tried to do some research on radios before and was having a hard time, but I will look again since I like the Quattro ROM much more than any of the other ROMs I've tried.
some will work some won't, try a wesite called gsm arena, this will give you phone specific radio bands

I eventually unlocked my AT&T SGS3 and switched to T-Mobile with a friend. I noticed often times i'll be in the same spot, and my phone with go from 4g to E in a matter of seconds, then keeps switching back and forth. My friend who switched with me has the Galaxy Note 2 from AT&T and we'll be in the same car and his phone will be on 4g, while i'll be stuck on Edge with no internet. I'm wondering if I flashed my modem to something else, if I were to get better reception. Or perhaps a newer ROM with better T-Mobile radios? I'm running the newest Cyanogen with the I747UCDLK3 Modem. I would appreciate any help! Thanks.

You can try different modems for your carrier (start with latest). There's a modem sticky thread.
One thing though, T-mobile is known to have bad 4G coverage and they're currently upgrading their towers so if your phone connects to a tower that doesn't have 4G yet, you connection will drop.

I do change my modem whenever there's a update to try it. Usually with better results than the last one.
I'm with Rogers though, so can't try it for T-Mobile. It's something to test as I can't know which one will work best in your area and on your device.
Hi all, this is my first time posting in these forums.
I've recently purchased a used rogers model i317m galaxy note 2 and used the dialer code so I could use it on Telus.
Since doing so, I have experienced intermittent, unexplainable signal drops, especially going into indoor areas. I have a friend with the same model phone, but Telus stock, and we have compared signal strength over the last two weeks. In a friends basement, he gets full reception on his note 2, while I get nothing.
In dealing with this issue, I have perused these forums for weeks. A variety of threads in the various note 2 forums all point to something fishy going on with galaxy note 2's that have been unlocked with the dialer code, and no conclusive evidence or answers regarding what the problem is, or how it can be fixed. It seems like those threads simply die because people cannot provide an explanation.
I have taken the phone to multiple repair shops, but their answers were all varying and they were more interested in trying to sell me on replacing the main board for $300 than helping me (no idea if it would actually fix anything if it's software related). I originally thought it could be a hardware antenna issue, but looking online and inquiring at the shops, antenna problems are so rare they don't even have stock, and have never been asked to replace one.
I doubt it's a hardware problem, and the other loose threads regarding this issue seem to confirm that it is software related, and only happens to dialer unlocked note 2's. And since I am getting reception (3bars and let outside, 1 bar and no data inside), the antennas do seem to be working.
ive tried a variety of solutions suggested on* the forums, but to no avail.
1) factory reset, no results
2) new sim card, no results
3) flashing a stock Telus rom, changing csc code, nothing
4) flashing new telus radio (even though I know rogers, Telus, sasktel all use the same radio), nothing
5) flashing aws band, made reception worse (maybe)
6) using *#*#2236# code, changing options, nothing
7) calling Telus, explaining the situation, having them make sure everything was fine on their side. Everything checked out and the Telus guy was equally confused by the problem.
8) main Samsung tech support, same issue. The representative was confused as well, and started cruising xda to try to help me!
This has been incredibly frustrating. The signal drop is so bad it basically renders the phone unusable. Right now I'm sitting in a house on the main floor on wifi next to big windows, and I'm getting one bar of reception and no data at all. On my nexus in the same room I was getting full signal.
The only thing I haven't tried is flashing modded baseband radios, but another person with the same problem on xda tried that and it didn't work for them at all.
I think I'm out of options. Planning on selling it to a used store for cheap and buying one fresh from Telus, or ordering an international model so this won't happen again.
Can anyone help?
Thanks so much.

I was having the same problem on my Note 2 i317 and seem to have fixed it with the latest modem i317UCAMH3. It still fluxuates, but now I get a full 5 bars of reception and it lasts much longer. I also downloaded an app call OpenSignal, that seems to help...cannot image exactly why, but when I get low reception, I open this app and watch it jump to at least 2 bars and then I can make a call again (this was before flashing the newer modem), now I just use the app for visual purposes, as the Beanstalk image for reception is hard to see, OpenSignal has nice big green bars that are easy to see. Try the new modem and give it at least 15 minutes to connect, then it seems to stay connected for me...except when it locks and goes to sleep...it still loses reception when that happens, but that is an issue for another day.
Cheers!
i unlocked a sgh-i747 sgs3 for use on tmobile. when i was stock, i could get 4G and Edge only. After a suggestion, i updated my phone and it connected to all manner of 4G and HSPA networks.
i decided that i wasnt happy with the ROM and upgraded to CM 10.1.2-d2att by means of CWM v6.0.3.1.
after getting this happily flashed, i loaded CM and am now stuck in 3g.
any ideas???
I may be wrong, so don't try it without confirmation, but if you don't touch the radios, don't you need the t-mobile roms rather than the at&t ones? I suspect the problem using an at&t Rom is your apn's are messed up. Also check the order your networks try.

can you elaborate on this? i know what a radio is, but i don't know if i follow you. as someone pretty new to all this, i feel that i did mess with the radio in order to get the AT&T phone, before i installed CM, to connect properly to the 3G signals.
In recovery you can flash modems and baseband. These are specific to the hardware in your phone. You should only flash ones specific to your model number. However the Roms are basically the same between different versions of the phone but with minor changes (at least between t mobile and at&t). There was a thread around explaining how to use a t mobile Rom on an at&t phone.

i tried to straight flash the tmobile rom and the little android guy died

meh... im in a bad place. i can't flash the CM i want because apparently the bootloader that fixes the 3G issue for me is based on ICS. if i update the bootloader so i can get the good CM, i guess i lose the fix... right now, i've reverted to the touchwiz that comes with the fix i talked about in my OP and 4G works properly again.
rock and a hard place.
Am glad you got something working. Can you sell that gs3 and get the T Mob version? If it were me, I'd probably stick with a touch wiz version for a while.
I'll try and read up some tomorrow.

heh, i just bought it. got it this morning from the post office! it was the cheapest one i could get given certain circumstances. you're right, it would be so much easier to just have the official tmobile version.
i have it back in CM now, but it's CM10.0.*. android 4.1 i think. and i'm getting HSPA+ with it. my biggest issue is that 3G fix... it sticks me on a ICS bootloader and that holds back the CM version from being anything 10.1.*. but at least i'm running CM now, even if it's not 4.2.

have you tried the settings here?
Settings/More networks/mobile networks
Your Network mode should show LTE,WCDMA (auto connect)
if not, tap on the network mode and select the LTE/WCDMA (auto connect) option and back all the way out.
Turn on airplane mode for about 30 seconds and then turn it back off and see what your results are.
You need to be SURE that LTE reception is possible where you are trying this. After all, no matter how good your hearing is, you won't hear me talking if you're out of earshot, right? LOL
Good luck!

Thats strange, this issue has been encountered with rooted phones running stock/custom roms while running some mods.
You may have to do a factory reset, or stop by a TMOBILE store and let them check it out.

Could be that it doesn't support LTE from your carrier.. I think it may be capable to support LTE but its disabled on that model.. I've seen people flash M919 modems and gotten LTE to work. Just make sure you do some research, and more research if you device to do this

I've been rooting my phone as if it was a normal t-mobile m919 but I tried searching for into to see it there was a way to simply make my V (m919V) disappear and solve all my problems but nothing yet I know you can but as far as warranty, brick and risks go I have not found much information regarding this issue and that why I started this post
I wanted to say thank you to everyone for your help and suggestions
OK I've done some research and it seem that the m919v has the lte hardware to run the frequency 700
( http://www.morecellphone.com/compar...vs-samsung-galaxy-s4-lte-gt-i9505-64gb/340724)
And that virgin mobile (bell's network)
(bell is one of the biggest telecommunications companies in canada)
has this frequency on their network
(http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_LTE_networks)
The only thing is that the lte frequency off 700 was lunched in Ontario last month and I'm in Montreal
But the fact that t-mobile only has 1700 and that virgin uses this here means that the phone isn't the problem and with this information, i've concluded that it a software issue
