Hey guys! I just got my nexus and, well it has a bad scratch on the screen... bad enough that I can feel it with my fingers. Its not HORRIBLE but its kind of annoying. How can I remove this? I've heard toothpaste works good. Thanks

I would recommend buying some kind of display polish before experimenting with toothpaste, since the device is brandnew!

Honestly, you can't just remove the scratch. A screen protector will mask the scratch. Your going yo have to replace the screen. Samsung should have put certified gorilla glass instead of a different fortified glass on the gnex. Think about it. Your not going to go without a scratch in the 2-3 years you have the phone.. so deal with it!

My 5 months of going caseless and without a screen protector disagree =]
You're sorta out of luck here. The phone is coated with a special oleo-phobic coating, so if you try to buff-out the scratch there will be a weird patch that will be noticeable to the touch and eye of where you scratched off the coating, unless you buff out the entire screen, which will give you more scratches most likely. My advice, cover it with a nice screen protector or ignore it until your phone develops more scratches, and then replace the entire screen. It will run you about ~$250 for the display. Honestly, if it bothers you that much replace the screen. You may be able to sell your scratched screen for $100 on Ebay for those people who crack their digitizer.
You can try the XO skins actually really good covering scratches (my brother mess up his phone too ) and cheap too and good warranty even outside US

Hey guys im looking at buying the gnex soon. The only thing holding me back is i keep hearing it scratches very easily. Im not a big fan of big cases and usually use the phone naked. Has anybody that been using it without protector and notices it scratches easy? Ive had a sgs1 for two years and that thing is like a brick. Dropped it too many times and not one scratch. Thanks

i've been using it without a screen protector, for about 4 months now. I generally keep my device very well, i dont over-protect it, but im not careless with it either, i.e. i dont put it in screen first with keys and loose change. so far it's absolutely pristine. It may not be gorilla glass, but it is something very similar. and judging form my experience with a samsung galaxy s 2 even gorilla glass isn't unscratchable, per se.

DO NOT USE TOOTHPASTE. EVER.
You will destroy your screen, toothpaste contains abrasive particle that kinda work like sandpaper on tooth enamel, which is very very hard.
get a zagg prtector or something similar, it comes with a gel foam applicant, which fills those scratches and when the screen protector goes onit creates a gapless layer, and you wont be able to see or feel the scratch. Well...at least the scratch wont be very obvious.
My two weeks old GNex, naked for only a week, then i had a scratch, very tiny scratch (between 'F' and 'G' portrait keyboard).
And it only noticeable under the light with a great focus of your eyes. It's okay, I don't like using case.
I can debunk two myths in this and numerous threads: 1. Toothpaste does not work in 'removing' or even masking scratches on the GNex. 2. Toothpaste does not otherwise 'mess up' your screen in trying to fix a scratch (at least using plain, mint Colgate paste )
Like others, I was curious to see if it'd work. I read in numerous sources that kept pointing to toothpaste as a home remedy, however oddly no success stories, but at the same time no stories of ruining your screen either. I tested a tiny spot first, in the corner of the display for 'abrasive' damge. Nothing. I then moved on to the scratch itself - a scratch that's about 3/4" in lenght (I got the phone used at a nice price due to the scratch). I used a tiny bit of plain white toothpaste, a q-tip that was barely damp, and a micro-fiber cloth. I applied the toothpaste ALONG the scratch and not just apply it in swirls, and waited for it to dry. I then buffed the paste off with the micro-fiber cloth. I did this twice. Nothing fixed, yet nothing ruined. So there you have it. That's my story.
I also tried Ghost Armor to mask it. Didn't help at all, if anything you could see it more than just when the light hits it just right 'naked.'
Additionally it looks like the long-term test of that one poster replacing just the GLASS on his GNex was not successful as he recently updated his post saying that various debris has found its way under the screen since his successful replacing of it. Due to this, he specifically says that due to the risk and debris, it's not worth it.
SO.... you either have to deal with the scratch(es), or replace the screen, digitizer, etc or just purchase a new/used device. Currently Gnex's are going for about $260-285 on Ebay auctions (cheaper on CL), while making a few calls to replace my screen fully runs anywhere from $200-250 locally.
However, I've heard stories where folks send their devices into Samsung to get just the glass replaced. If you start a ticket with them, they'll quote you around $163 including shipping both ways. However, there are stories of credit cards not being charged at all and covered under warranty if all they do is replace the glass.
Hope this helps.
I moved from the iPhone 4 nd had zero screen scratches in the 2years I had it. I already got one on my s3 just wondering if anyone else noticed your screen scratched?

Nothing here. I cleaned up the screen for the first time after a month and it's just perfect... probably because i usually leave it in hit case while i don't use it.

I had a iPhone 4s and my screen was scratched and how that happened I had no idea as I am always very careful. I got a galaxy s3 and had no screen scratch however my buddy got his s3 also and has a screen scratch so it depends If it has glass it can get scratched bottom line doesn't matter what phone it is or what type of glass. I would just get a screen protector to be safe like I did.

I have a similar issue, from time to time I feel like the top layer of the phone is detached somehow when it doesn't look like it and oddly enough when I randomly touch the top near the call speaker, you feel that little push to the phone, clicking it back into place
HOX is perfect while SG3 has a scratch
I've had my HTC One X longer then I have had my GS3 and for some reason the GS3 has a small scratch in the screen, while my One X screen is perfect. I thought both of these phones had gorilla 2 on them?

Same thing I've noticed comparing Galaxy Nexus to HTC Sensation and now GS3 with OneX. It seems Samsung puts a oleophobic coating on their phones which helps resist smudges, make them easier to clean. I believe this coating is what you see those fine scratches in. The glass itself is not getting scratched just this coating. I've only seen it on Samsung phones. My Nexus has these fine scratches that can only be seen in direct sunlight and can't be felt or affect the display in anyway. Same thing happened with my GS3 until I swapped it out for some other issue - this replacement GS3 I stuck a screen cover on it so I don't have to be bothered with the fine coating scratches.

For me personally it's bad call. Why get this top of the line phone with excellent screen and then put something on top of it which would make screen duller? This was never an issue with previous Galaxy S phones and Samsung screwed it up somehow with this iteration.

Legally, drop and scratch resistant is not drop or scratch proof. A bleeding heart judge or authority figure may allow suit or coverage of damages, but they have every right not to. It's not a design flaw. Glass, in general, will break and scratch.

i had the same problem with my Samsung LCD tv... over several months the clicking got worse and worse until it wouldn't turn on. look on youtube or do a google search, but if it's the same problem i had, the fix is easy.
a trip to Radio Shack and about 5$ in new capacitors is all it took. removed the back of the TV and replaced the old/blown/leaky capacitors. took about 15 minutes total and saved me from buying a new TV... (damnit, i wanted an excuse!)

With a phone like the same you need a case since it has a glass panel over the entire front going down the sides a bit too. This of course is going to crack if dropped without a case that does not have a raised face . I have had my s3 thrown across a room and I have no scratches or cracks...about 10ft onto concrete floor of home depot. And it is fine. Now on other devices I have owned you kinda do not need a case because of how the glass is set up. And like someone had said before it is resistant not proof. Depends on how it falls and unfortunately how it is designed it is slightly more prone to happen.

You guys must if gotten faulty glass or something. I have had two major drops and although other parts of the phone became damaged, my glass had survived mostly. First time I left my phone on the roof of my car and drove away, only to have it fly off my roof, down my windshield and skidding across the pavement when I came to a stop. The back cover came flying off and I had to replace the battery because it was badly scratched and thought it might leak. The back of the phone was scratched badly, but there was only one hardly noticeable scratch to the glass. The second time, my little nephew decided to throw my phone down the stairs, causing my phone to break into pieces. The glass did crack, but not like yours. Just on the edges there were cracks where the body of the phone meets the glass. I was impressed with the glass, but maybe it was just how the phone landed. Unfortunately the rest of the phone didn't survive. I was impressed with the durability of the phone that I bought a new one. My wife has iphone 4, and her front glass is in tack but looks shattered from dropping it off of the nightstand. Mine is a Canadian S3 so maybe that makes a difference. I bought a case for my new phone since I seem to abuse my phones so often. I feel sorry for you guys that your screen cracked so easily.

Details of who threw it and why it was thrown please? Lmao
I feel the same way.... that there may be a lot of S3's with faulty glass. The drop test videos prove the glass to be very strong. Perhaps overheated or somehow made brittle. Perhaps hairline cracks introduced during manufacture. My son pulled his S3 out of his hoodie pocket and the screen was shattered. He didn't even drop it. This definitely fits the definition of manufacturer defect. The problem is that everyone knows a glass screen has the potential to break when you drop the phone. How do you prove it one way or the other?
Don't look for Samsung to stand behind their product. The didn't do anything except deny the GPS problems on the Captivate. They didn't do anything about the high failure rate of the power button either. My friend had a 42" Samsung LCD TV that died after a couple years with a very common problem for that model. They refused to make things right for these people either.

Currently I'm using a Samsung Vibrant and I drop that phone maybe like 25 times or more and have scratches all around but the screen is like new, and for the GN2 being a huge phone, putting a protecting case just gonna add up too much.

there are plenty of cases that do not add much bulk to the phone..technically speaking, all you really need is a raised edge on the bumper around the screen. During a fall, as long as its not your screen corners that take the hit (Let the case absorb the impact), you should be fine. If you are holding back on getting a great phone just because it breaks when you drop it, then...oh well..

I dropped mine onto a tile floor at my workplace from pocket height and it suffered no damage. The battery door and battery flew halfway across the room, but it worked fine after putting them back in. No case on it, either.
It's just pure chance.

Im with you. I have dropped mine a few times from different hights, onto different surfaces (tile, carpet, concrete) no damage. Worst that happened was battery cover came half off. Only thing I have on is the flip case from samsung.
Most of the falls were from sitting pocket height, but one or two on tile were from pocket height while standing.
Brace yourselves
Here is my brother's note. Dropped out of his jacked pocket while getting out of his car.
Well I got some good news and bad news...the good news is that Mobile Device Protection Association, LLC who T mobile uses for devices is going to fix my device free of charge! The Bad news I will be without my Note 2 for 5 days, it sucks that the Note 2will be gone. Hell in this day and age having no phone for 5 days is very hard.
UUUUGH
I woke up this morning in a rush, threw my phone in my pocket. Ran out the door to class.
Realized after class when a friend wanted to look at my phone they were with my keys! There are all these little microscratches and a few bigger ones DEAD CENTER.
It isn't too noticeable until light his it from a certain direction.
But I cannot freakin believe that I let that happen. I usually am completely OCD about these things, and I normally put screen protectors and cases on my phone the MINUTE I open the damn thing.
Hell - I do it for all my devices. My laptop, Vita, my gaming consoles, I have protective stuff for everything!
The Note 2 didn't have a Zagg yet, and they list it on their page but it isn't featured or "imaged". The last time I did that with Zagg, the damn thing came to be unpunctured - aka I had to manually cut the material out with a knife (hard as hell to do, near impossible without stretching!)
So I waited one day too long it seems. Screw me right?
I'm so annoyed and bothered now. Brand new phone, brand new scratches. First phone screen scratch issue I've had in over 4 years.
Does anyone know any real solutions (aka not toothpaste -.-) that I could try to buffer them out?
Return it for another color if u dont mind it.

Have you returned phones to ATT before? Im not familiar with the process and how easy it may or may not be.
If you get a replacement, they do sell the Zagg Shields for the Note II at Best Buy. When I first bought my Note 2, I immediately drove to Best Buy and picked up the HD version of the Zagg Shield for it! It definitely looks good on the phone. They had the smudge free version of the shield but I'm not sure if it lowers the clarity...

If you're within your 14 day return window, they will just charge you $35 restock fee and give you a new one. Or .. just suck it up.. slap on a screen protector now and you won't even notice the scratches.
Damn, what the hell are your keys made of? Steel can't even scratch tempered glass let alone gorilla glass 2.

Hate to say it - I had the SAME issue.. This is more like spider monkey glass, nowhere near as strong as they say it is.
Mine has a couple small scratches from being in my pocket as well..

Happened to me the 2nd day I had my Note.
I put it in my backpack for less than 15 minutes in the afternoon. THAT NIGHT I got my new screen protectors in the mail and as I was going to apply the screen I noticed the scratches all over the screen.
The glass is NOT scratch proof by any means just because it is gorilla glass. Sure typical metal wont scratch the screen but just about anything else will.
I took it back to ATT and they switched it for a new one, no questions asked for the restocking price of 35 bucks.
I slapped a screen protector on my new Note the minute I opened the box.

Have had phone for a month now and just noticed a 1cm scratch thats barely visible with the eye but can be felt with my fingernail. No idea what caused is ive been babying this. Thats what I get for believing in gorilla glass. Ordered JLG today to prevent future occurences
If it makes you feel any better I cracked the glass completely... I'm also very careful with my phones. It took a 3 foot fall onto pavement (hands not used the size yet) and the glass is completely shattered... it wasn't even 24 hours old. Now I am waiting fr the repair place to get the full lcd+touch+glass screen back in stock - will cost me over $300 to have it fixed.
Sooo - little scratches on your screen...
I'm not sure what kind of glass Sammie is using on the Note 2 but it seems pretty fragile. My original galaxy and moto Atrix handled much worse falls without any damage whatsoever.

Supposed to be gorilla glass 2
The GN2 Gglass debate has already taken place.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1958329
It scratches on every device its been used on so screen protector up or Flip cover to avoid screen damage.
hehe I got lucky on my Epic Touch 4G no scratch ,ding or dents.
GN2 screen is larger more prone to damage so I'm using flip cover protection on it.
I recommend the Tridea case - http://www.amazon.com/Black-Samsung-Premium-T-Mobile-Unlocked/dp/B009SNTHPO/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
Yeah I'm sure it's not the phone but just having more screen to scratch/crack etc. I always go caseless and without screen protector but I am buying a coat off armour for this sucker once it's repaired

It makes the pen drag significantly, the anti smudge ones I mean. I had to take it off and return it, it was too annoying.

I think you just answered a question I had in another thread...you were able yo return your zagg to best buy with no problems?

You might try one of these. I have never used them but they claim to fill in 95% of the scratches on your screen and they do have one for the note 2.
