[Q] How to downgrade my radio? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I updated my radio but not quite happy with the result. I try the PD98IMG.zip method, but the bootloader tells me that the zip is corrupted and no flash process starts.
I am not quote sure what kind of s-off sI have, but the phone was rooted the old way, no htc unlock.
The first line reads
Ace PVT SHIP S-oFF RL
Is it safe to try the Windows fastboot method.

deckoff said:
Ok, I want to replace the radio II have, and I follow this instructions, but the flash process will not strat, fastboot says the img is invalid.
My question is - do I have to rename the zip I downloade, of the extracted img itself. I did it a few weeks ago but I cannot remmeber how I did it ??

if the zip file you download contains the .img file and and .txt file. then yes, rename it PD98IMG.zip and put that in the root of your sdcard. Make sure that md5sum checks....flashing radios is a delicate thing.
For further help use the guide in my signature...

checksum is OK, I tried, but no txt file ??
I saw it mentioned once, but cant find a link to it, what does it have to contain, encoding, etc?

The txt file was the problem, I had to add it. Here it is for anyone who might need it.

It contains the update script...find in the guide in my signature that there is one PD98IMG.zip empty folder....put the radio .img file in there and do a normal compress....then flash it in the bootloader as mentioned.

Yeah, I managed to flash I just added the script for anyone trying to go my route, since all radios come zipped, but do not contain the txt file
PS Zips made on ubuntu will refuse to flash, ??

um...maybe the wrong compression in the zip file...it has to be normal compression.

Most probably, cos just dropping the txt file there will be no problems.

How do I un-root without a computer?

How would I go about pulling the files from http://rapidshare.com/files/3899834....651.1_Radio_1.39.00.04.26_release_171253.exe and flash back to stock using just the phone, not using the computer at all?

Download the RUU zip from there and move it to the root of your sdcard (where u have all your other flashable zips) with a file manager and flash

grab the rom.zip file people have extracted from the RUU, put it on the root of your sdcard. rename it from rom.zip to PC36IMG.zip, reboot into the bootloader and it will analyze the PC36IMG.zip file and ask if you want to flash.
confirm yes and you'll be back to stock in no time!

exactly what this guy said, but to be more specific on how to do it, run the RUU executeable at the first screen minimize the application
do a "start>run" or a "<windows key> + r" and type in %temp% and hit ok, then search this folder for rom.zip and then rename it to PC36IMG.zip *care on if the .zip extension showing or not depending on your windows view settings* and copy it to the root directory of the sd card
restart the phone by power+vol down then it will search then ask you to flash, this whole part is extremely similar to steps in the flipz root method
like I said exactly what he said, just broken down like barney

I ask because on the first post of How to root by toast it says at the end:

and there are different rom versions, I think this one has other Radio.
Any ways, i see this as a must have since you can go back to stock ROM on the go if you need it, for warranty/replace/exchange.
Here comes a stupid question. Where is the root on your sd card? Is it anywhere on the sd card or is it a certain directory?

Did what you said rebooted into bootloader but it wouldn't let me flash. What gives I have to unroot to get a new one. Thanks
Use the latest ZIP here:
http://goo-inside.me/evo/stock/RUU/
Move the ZIP from /sdcard/download to /sdcard and rename it to PC36IMG.zip. Check the MD5, then reboot into hboot.
I extracted the root then it top me its a older version can't do it
Sorry but what is MD5, and once downloaded do I have to extract it then flash?
Do not extract.
Do not flash.
Just do what I said to do.

[Q] Error [240] file open This is STUPID

I Read and Read and Read. The surprising part is that, what I need the most there is no video nor any instruction to fix the problem.
I'm trying to flash a ROM on my tilt 2 GSM phone.
I have already HSPL it,
I did task 29 using RhodiumWAdvancedRUU.zip because I couldn't get regular task 29 to work.
Now I get a white screen with HTC on it and it doesnt pass it. So I enter bootloader and make sure that at the bottom it shows USB. (yes I do see SPL-0.85. OliNex)
Now I try to install the ROM and here is where the problem starts.
My ROM:
I dled NRG MAXSENSE ROM which is Energy.RHODIUM.29022.Sense2.5.MaxSense.Jul.08.7z
My Rhodium Update Utility (RUU) is
Rhodium_CustomRUU_v1.1.zip
I Open it and I see
CustomRUU.exe
Here is where I don't know what to do. Some instructions say that I need a .NBH file. Where do I get this file. They say it should be with my ROM.
All I get when I dl the ROM is
Energy.RHODIUM.29022.Sense2.5.MaxSense.Jul.08.7z
Format 7z not .nbh
I get the Error [240] File Open when I run CustomRUU.exe. To fix it they say
"When this error message appears, check whether the downloaded image is placed in the DIRECTORY of RUU. If, for some unknown reason, you find that the ROM image is not located in the RUU folder, you have to download the RUU and retry again."
What is the "DIRECTORY" of RUU"? Whats a directory? I never heard that term before.
Of which RUU? CustomRUU.exe?
Do I make a folder and put CustomRUU.exe in it with the Energy.RHODIUM.29022.Sense2.5.MaxSense.Jul.08.7z ?
Where is the .nbh file? Do I rename the ROM IMAGE to .nbh?
Please give me step by step. Ive read so much already and I dont know what to do anymore. Thank you for your help.
-___- I cannot believe I spent all this time for something so dumb. We should put this on the Help for NOOBS thread. The file " .7z " cannot be opened with Winzip. To open the file you have to use WINRAR. And from there we can see the Rhodium_SoftwareUpgrade.exe (RUU) and the RHODIMG.nbh files. And double clicking the Rhodium_SoftwareUpgrade.exe the software will start walking you through the process for flashing. I think it would be a good idea to add on the HOW TO FLASH A ROM that the 7z file requires WINRAR to be opened.
But thanks to the Lord I learned how to flash the Rom successfully.

Downloaded from a different computer and still the same issue, file is corrupt. Trying to check the md5 value and it does not even give me a md5 at all matching or not. I am going to go to a friends house and try downloading it again.
Ok, I have tried from a 3 different computers, my tablet and my htc thunderbolt and everytime it ends up in a corrupt/invalid .zip file. Can anyone link me to a known good working file so I can downgrade my hboot and get s-off?

You downloaded from 3 different computers, probably through the same connection, but I believe you tried to run them from the same computer that failed every time, just a guess.
Just tried 2 of the links:
http://d-h.st/XJX
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/38127313/RootEvo4GNew.zip
and I'm currently in the process of trying the 3rd.
http://downloadandroidrom.com/file/H...otEvo4GNew.zip from your link here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1771755
They work just fine. The problem appears to be on your end. All three downloads are OK.
And if that's not the case, here is the same file that I have been using since last year that others have downloaded. So if this one fails as well, then yes, there is definitely something wrong on your end.
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/38127313/P....15.00.0808_NV_2.15_release_220182_signed.zip
Also, I'm going to downgrade and S-OFF my old Evo with the same files just to verify that they are OK.

In the past with my thunderbolt and downloading the same files I have noticed if I can not open the zip file and see what is in it then it will not properly flash. But just for the sake of argument I will do it your way.

If you have to you could always download the froyo RUU and pull the rom.zip from it, rename to PC36IMG.zip and flash
To do this, run the RUU but do not click anything after it opens
With the RUU still open, open a "Run..." window (WindowsKey + R) and type in "%temp%" then enter to go to your temporary files folder
Sort the files by date modified and go into the most recent folders, find a zip called "rom.zip" and copy that to your desktop
Close the RUU, rename the "rom.zip" to "PC36IMG.zip" and you can then flash it through bootloader

Yep, the downloads do work. There is nothing wrong with any of the files. Phone went from 2.18, S-ON to 6.16, S-OFF without any issues from those same downloads.

I'm having the same problem. I just finished repairing my old EVO and looking to downgrade it to 2.15. All the links have bad files. Tried D/L from work, friends house, parents, and to my SGS3. Always get the same message..."cant open the folder... zipped folder is invalid." I've been to numerous sites about this and i'm always directed to the same files. This isn't a rare issue, it's a lot of people. There's something wrong with those files.

No, there isn't. The zip files are encrypted, so most zip programs will throw an error if you try to open them. They should not be unzipped. The files from my post have always and still work fine. Just follow the instructions and stop trying to open the zip!
NOTE: Some browsers will try to automatically open the zip file when download is complete. In that case, try a different browser.
No go, sir. Opening the zip or not, the fact is it doesn't work. I have a few of these files and none of them are recognized when boot loader is brought back up to flash the file. It scans the zip, can't find file, image or anything. Its the same thing no matter which one I use. I'll keep looking for a good procedure and a decent download.

There's nothing wrong with Captain's files or the pc36img.zip files given on this page. They work just fine as usual. I just downloaded one (again) and confirmed it.
Is your phone S-Off? Did you flash a mtd-eng.img file to your misc partition, so that it will downgrade?
If you answer no to both of these questions, then the problem is not necessarily the zip files, but is likely on your end. And if you answered no to both of those questions, then the zip files are not likely going to work for you.
And, if one of your answers is yes, then it could be a problem with your sdcard. Sometimes they are full, or not formated correctly, or have some other issue, which will also cause the files to fail. You cannot always assume that just because a file does not work the way you expect it to, that it is necessarily something wrong with that file.

Speed bump in Rooting process...

Hey guys, I am in the process of rooting my evo 4g using this method http://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-hacks/how-to-root-htc-evo-4g-on-hboot-2-18-with-s-off/ since I have 2.18 hboot version. I have unzipped all the files from RootEvo4GNew, and the file recovery-RA-supersonic-v2.3.img does not have the .img extension on it when I unzip it to the correct folder, and when I try to flash that in the cmd prompt it says
unknown partition 'recovery-RA-supersonic-v2.3.img'
error: cannot determine image filename for 'recovery-RA-supersonic-v2.3.img
I am assuming it can't find the file because it doesn't have the extendion .img on it once extracted. Any ideas? The icon next to the file looks like a zip file and can't be opened by 7zip
See it looks like a winzip file instead of a image file
Ok so I uninstalled winzip and now just have 7zip and it now shows the file as an .img file but I am still getting the same error message when in the command prompt. What am I doing wrong? Here's another image to show you what I mean

Thanks for the advice, I think this may work as I did have one extension duped. Problem is when I run the recovery it says it's an older version than what I already have installed and asks if I want to restart the device. I also still can't get the phone to flashboot recovery recovery-RA-supersonic-v2.3.img and it still says unrecognized partition in the command prompt. Is there a way to flash this from the sc card or anything else you can think of to try?

Are you trying to fastboot flash the recovery .img file to your phone? If so you need to use the command "fastboot flash recovery *insert file name here*" (without quotation marks or asterisks). The recovery img file has to be in your ADB tools folder, alstherwise, put the recovery PC36IMG.zip file in the root folder of your SD card, make sure it's named PC36IMG.zip with no extra .zip extension, and reboot your bootloader. Follow the on-screen prompts to update your recovery.

fastboot flash recovery recovery-RA-supersonic-v2.3.img
Thank you so much for the help, on to the next step and hopefully this works!
Ok, successfully rooted with s-off! I have read through all the guides, and am still a bit confused because most of them are from 2010 and 2011. I need to flash a rom that will work with metro-pcs. Can you guys help me with which steps I need to take? I tried to download metrodroid v4 but the download link isn't working. Will aall of the roms in this thread work with metro pcs or do I need a specific one? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2318070
Also, once I have a rom flashed, do I have to go in to a metro pcs store to get it activated (I do not currently have a metro pcs account or other metro phone) or can I get the esn activated online or by calling there 800 number?

It does not recognize the PC36IMG.zip files
Any advice?
Is the zip file named correctly meaning make sure you don't have it like this. PC36IMG.zip.zip.
Should be only one .zip
Just asking its a common mistake.
Did you try extracting the recovery.img and flashing it with fastboot.

Thanks for replying, I checked several times, from ES Explorer on my s4 from my mac and windows machine. I have been working on this for several days. I even bought a new sd card for it made sure it was fat32.
OK I extracted the recovery.IMG how do I use it now?

This is a little late, but fastboot is not supported by Hboot 2.10.0001. You might need this file from this site to get the phone working again.

It's another zip file that's hopefully not corrupted that need to be renamed PC36IMG and put on the sdcard.
