Source: http://www.theverge.com/2013/1/8/38...aunch-refreshed-galaxy-s-iii-with-lte-support
At a CES briefing today, T-Mobile CTO Neville Ray revealed to The Verge that the company will launch a refreshed version of Samsung's wildly popular Galaxy S III that features support for its upcoming LTE network — a network that has now been confirmed to launch commercially any week now. It's not yet known whether the phone will be marketed as a new, distinct model or as a silent and unadvertised swap on store shelves.
Though the Galaxy S III that's presently being offered by T-Mobile does not support LTE, the slightly newer Galaxy Note II does; Ray tells us that it'll require a "small" software update to enable it once it's available. No other LTE-capable phones have been announced by T-Mobile yet, but it's likely that we'll see some announcements as the first markets go live across the first and second quarter of the year.

What are the chances that this is really just the T999? If its really a brand new model (T999LTE / T1000 / T:silly::silly::silly, how many of you would sell your current T999 and upgrade?

T999L - We've been hearing bits and pieces about it (Mostly speculation) for a little while now. Nice to have some confirmation though.
Edit: And if the LTE happens to cover my area, you can bet that I'll sell my T999 and get a T999L

for what? lte consumes more power and isnt any faster than what youre already using. in fact, some would argue it is slower...
...and the Vibrant story repeats itself. T-mobile sure loves doing this. At least my unlocked T999 is ready to switch when I get the money to do so.

But seriously, that's why I said "If it happens to cover my area". I know it likely wont, but hey, who knows. I can already almost throw a rock and hit an HSPA+ 42 coverage area.
This is exactly what turns me off about the galaxy line in the US. I thought maybe they'd change with all the carriers having similar phones now, but no. Ill keep my s3 until its paid off then I'm probably going tontrybsomething else.

I dont think its that simple, I believe you need the hardware as well as the modem firmware, just flashing the modem could potentially brick your phone.
I get like 1.6 megs down already. It's more than fast enough.

I'm good with mine. I get almost 20 megs in the dallas metro plex. Tmobile could had the lte turned off like the note 2 and they turn it on when it was available. But they decided to make more money with a new release like the vibrant.

I guess once this phone is released, there needs to be a detailed teardown (anandtech / ifixit) that compares the old T999 with the new T999L.
Hopefully there are no hardware differences, and everything is firmware/rom related.
If there are hardware differences, maybe we can start frankensteining a broken T999L (i.e. cracked screens etc) with a working T999 LOL

More realistically if enough ppl complained maybe we can get sprint to give us a free upgrade to an LTE device
By the time LTE actually comes to your area, you'll probably be eligible for an upgrade anyway.
And why would you get a free upgrade? It's not like the WiMAX service is being shut down or anything.
There are theories, but nothing confirmed yet.

I called Sprint when the news that they were ending WiMax came out and they said that if I did not have 4G in my area they would allow me an earlier upgrade to an LTE phone with no penalties.
I had to push them for a while and escalate and bedazzle them with logic, but it worked.
But it was all for nothing since my phone will be put up for sale May 7th.

We as in ACS. We were in touch with a reliable source that I'd prefer not to name the origin of.
A few things...
LTE and WIMAX do require 2 different radios so if you wanted your device to switch between them it would have to have both radios built in.
Wimax is not going away anytime soon because we announced a new hotspot device which houses all of our radios aka "quadband".
Just a question; Why is complaining ever a solution? Technology moves like water. You jump in knowing that there is newer and better just up stream of you. Retail some how gives people a sence of entitlment which baffles me. You buy a car, do you complain the next year and say "well now there is a 2013 modle with x,y,z in it so I should get it for free".... just silly, baby town frolics even.

I kinda agree with what you're saying... I think what people are having an issue with is that they are stuck in contract with a non-lte phone. If you had to pay 5 times for that newer model car than what a new customer would pay, I bet you would be pretty upset too. I just hope my upgrade timing plays out perfectly to when lte is coming to chicago. That would be awesome.
On that meeting they had about network vision they did say about making lte work under Wimax or something like that I may be wrong thoe

I was thinking of getting another phone soon to replace my crappy Sensation and from my brief research, the GS3 may or may not have it in the hardware to support T-Mobile's upcoming LTE network. With the One X+ cancelled, am I only left with the GNote 2? I'm really not trying to carry that big of a phone around . Will there be any announcements by T-Mobile in the upcoming months to release phones for the holiday season? I'm keeping my fingers crossed . Thanks in advance for any insight or details.
The T-Mobile S3 will NOT connect to their future LTE network. The Note 2 probably won't either. Their LTE network is even close to ready to begin rolling out.

The note 2 is the closest one to get lte it pass by fcc by 1900aws and 700(Verizon band), they were rumors of tmobile making arrangements with Verizon so we probably get it then (if you have a supported device) having said that I don't worry I get up to 24 mbps on tmobile and love it, I use 20GB last month with unlimited so ain't going anywhere for a while

I couldn't agree more. I've seen very impressive speeds from 4G on SGS3... While I'm sure getting 30-60 mbps down (seems average on other LTE networks) is really cool, its more of a signature spec - or bragging spec... 10mbps+ on 4G is plenty fast for me, especially considering I've been using an iPhone on T-mobile for years stuck on 2G EDGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
4G is like LUDACRIS SPEED for me (anyone? spaceballs? anyone???)

On Verizon's LTE, I pulled on average 15-25mbps. It peaked out at about 30. On T-Mobile's Faux-G, I pull on average 10-20 mbps. I peak out at about 25.
LTE is not noticeably better in any way other than speed tests. Latency had been about 100ms for both as well. Primary difference had been LTE outages on Verizon seemed to last 12-72 hours whereas HSPA+ outages on T-Mobile seem to last 30-600 seconds.

30-60 is average? I've never seen anyone around here go faster than 22 mbps and in that context, my GS3 gets 15-16. The difference isn't very large at all.

Any way to prevent this from happening? Make a phone call before buying? Call tmob customer service?
By the way, since the Note 2 will be coming out by the end of this month or maybe early November, I think a lot of people will try to dump their GS3 to upgrade. Will craigslist prices lower? I'm seeing 300-350 on average right now.
So I was in a tmobile store today and was told that both the note II and Gs3 will receive a software patch to enable the lte radio. Asked the question like 10 different ways as I've read online that the gs3 will NOT be let cab able.
the internal phone workings are a little above my head...but i was told that the tmobile sg3 is the same as say the att model which does have the lte radio,
So, does that sound right that the SG3 is future proof and will be able to enable LTE?

Its been a while so I dont remember the details, but I am convinced that

2. It doesn't really matter. By the time the majority of us get LTE in our market, we will have moved on to an even better phone! Also, most of us will get hspa+42 soon which for now is more than sufficient for almost everyones needs.

I agree with Doc, we'll probably be on better phones by the time we have decent LTE reception -- and I'm happy enough with the DC-HSPA+ modem.
IMHO, they will likely release a Galaxy S3 [4G] LTE as an interm between the S3 and the S4. WRT LTE, all I know is what I see on Wikipedia's snapdragon article. Which isn't very clear on details. Also numerous MSM8960 phones /w LTE exist but do we even know if it's on die, let along bothering to crack open an AT&T and T-Mobile GS3 for a little hardware compare?

Unless Tmo planned for 1.5 years ahead when they launched the Herc, I doubt we have the right hardware. Hopefully it does have support and Tmo did plan for the future but they're keeping it a secret . Actually the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S III (SGH-T999) is NOT capable of it period. I have one. But i did read rumors that they may be making another S3, one with the exact same specs, but adding an LTE capable chip. T-Mobile went on the cheap side with their S3 and used the same chip as the ATT and other variants, but cut out the LTE capabilities. Kinda dumb but hey im not the CEO. lol.
But you are right, the Note 2 just needs a firmware update to enable LTE, also, the only other phone capable of T-Mobile LTE is the Windows Phone 8X.

So like I said then it's stupid for T-Mobile to say they are bringing lte to 200 million customers this year when most of them won't be able to use it...I'm under contract till March 2014 so I won't be able to use it till then...that's bs....unless they give me a new phone.....NOT....

Yeah I feel you.. it is bull. But then again neither sprint nor Verizon have existing contracts holders an lte device when they rolled it out. Guess that's just how it goes.

i dont think the s2 is LTE compatible.
I thought I will just add this here.. Maybe people will stop making new threads about LTE on our GS3.
Now we need to see if its the same hardware as ours and maybe combine a this forum with it.
Here is the news
Thought there was a thread on the new phone already.

Money I guess. My friend bought the s3 today cause it was 30 dollars and the s4 was 200 on Sprint but he didn't want to pay that much.

I agree. Glad we have choice and not stuck with just one . I love my sgs3. There are days I wish there was more I could do but for the most part it functions as it should and im not ready to fork out more money for a slightly updgraded version of this one. By slightly I mean "in my opinion" . Don't get all technical with me because I'm aware of the spec differences. If my phone isn't dead by next year around the holidays or even after that is consider seeing what's available. Sgs6 or even whatever the future holds.

Im kinda waiting for the Note 3 to comes out. That would have more features than that GS4. I think that should be a nice upgrade from my GS3. But then again T-Mobile did it again like they did with the Vibrant, I am not sure if this version of the S3 will have a lower memory or it will be the same as this just lte added.
The vibrant was a good phone and tmobile sacrificed that 16GB memory for that FFC when the Galaxy S 4G came out

Don't forget T-Mobile also abandoned the Vibrant when they released the 'better' version. We got stuck with Froyo officially. The very same could happen once more with us. There is a possibility that MD5 could be their last update for the non-LTE GS3. I seriously hope they don't forget the millions that bought the non-LTE GS3 as they did with the Vibrant.

That's not gonna be the case, and if it is the case we will get a version of it with custom roms. We'll get 4.2 around August-September (just a guess)

Yeah but bottom line is even if they decide to ditch this version of the updates I think it would be a lot easier to port it from the GS3 with lte! Even thought I dont think that Samsung will make a 100% different hardware of the one with LTE. Look at it this way. Even though AT&T. SPRINT, VERIZON have LTE GS3's and we can port roms from them. Or maybe tmobile will release the update to both devices
I doubt you have to worry bout getting keft out of the update loop. I'm guessing they will be virtually identical except for modems and drivers.

Pointless to go on endless speculation on what Tmobile and Samsung are going to do just wait and see. I think by the time we have 4.2, 4.3 might be out then people will be whining about getting that one.

Not gonna get this I'm happy with my sgs3. Probably one of the best phones I've had. If they do have a note 3 in the works I'll hold out for that.
So curious if anyonenhere has actually bought the Lte version.

Corrent I believe this new LTE GS3 will be the same exact phone... We should be good in porting roms from it just like Verizon, Sprint. And since is the same phone I wonder if we can flash radios from it too. Just like on the Hercules days when we could flash radios even from the Blaze 4G
I don't get why they would do this, T-Mobile or Samsung. Just release an S III version with hardware capabilities for LTE??? Just money hungry? Why do people get so worried about it? With HSPA+ I get 25 mb down, it's no 50 but on my phone I won't recognize the difference in loading web pages, or anything... My WiFi is 38mb down on my phone I tested both WiFi and Cell Data, no difference in loading a web page, maybe .5 seconds or 1 second, but is that what people are worried about? Seems so minuscule to me. Yet, there are about 20 threads on LTE and this phone, and an official thread with 13 pages.... and some of that cleaned out I'm sure, because people get so angry over the subject. Just boggles my mind, am I missing something here?

You're not missing anything. I completely share your feelings in this. When I owned the nexus 4 there were threads all about this also when a Google update disabled late on the nexus 4. People were all up in arms about it. Then after they found a way around it complained about battery life. We have become an instant society. If people perceive that late will get them something faster then they'll think they "need " it. I'm on WiFi 99% of the time. And when I am out of range my 4g is just as fast.

This thread was not about actually LTE. I have seen so many threads about LTE on this model of the gs3. I been telling em about this new model that tmobile has said it will come when they had that iphone conference. And I know what u mean there were a lot of lte threads. In my opinion i am not going to jump ship because of the lte. I can careless with it now that I have tested it with a att gs3 with a friend and I was getting better speeds than him. Maybe people just need to move on and next time u buy a phone they will be lte enable.. But again I don't know if tmobile pay less for these gs3 without lte in it. Its all about money. Just like some carriers prefer you pay another $500 for a phone that will have a minor update. Like for instance the vibrant and the galaxy s 4G. They said that the vibrant was not a 4G phone. They both had the same speeds in my experience that vibrant ran HSPA+ just like tmobiles so call 4G its HSPA+ so no difference there. Although for me the vibrant was a lot better. One thing though I wish is that I ne of these days tmobile will say that they will start saling none carrier branded phones. And there won't be a difference between the ones in the us and the ones international.
i like the idea
