[Q] Disable GSM radio - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Is there a way to disable the GSM radio? Turning on airplane mode does not disable all radios.
I'm pretty sure this is a hardware problem since the phone has been through a wash and rinse cycle. Upon bootup, the back of the phone on both sides of the camera heat up. Teardowns show this to be the location of the amplifiers. Any attempts to flash a radio succeeds but the rom does not stay, i.e. the baseband is unknown. However, everything else works: screen, wifi, BT, etc.
Is there any way to ensure the cellular radios turn off, either temporarily or permanently? Using the test mode does not turn the radio off either.
I am running the stock 4.2.1 OTA update. No mods.

go to phone app, type *#*#4636#*#*, tap phone information, at bottom there is a button "Turn off radio".

Airplane mode does in fact turn off the gsm radio... Try restoring factory images via fastboot. Maybe that will fix it if there isn't hardware damage.

Going from 4G connection to WIFI requires reboot

Good afternoon,
I read in another thread on here that there are a few that have experience this and one mentioned that there is a fix somewhere but I've searched and haven't been able to turn up anything.
Basically, after I connect to 4G, then go back home and want to connect back to WIFI, I have to reboot before WIFI will work. And vice versa. After connecting to WIFI, I have to reboot before 4G will work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Tim
I have the same issue. That will be a real pita.

Have you tried turning the radios on and off? Perhaps turning them both off then back on? perhaps turning on airplane mode then turning it off?

Say I'm at work on 4G. When I get home and then turn the 4G radio off and turn WIFI on, the WIFI radio fails to even turn on. I get an error saying it couldn't be activated...or something similar. Haven't tried toggling airplane mode.....

If you leave 4g and wifi both on through out the day do you run into problems? Or is it just initializing them after they have been off and you've been using the other radio.

So far it's been just initializing them after I've been using the other radio. My habit has been leave home, turn off WIFI and turn on 4G. Arrive home, turn off 4G, turn on WIFI. I haven't tried leaving both radios on all day... Hmmm....
Airplane mode does nothing.
Wifi on, turns off 4g. You can have one or the other on, not both.
Reboot phone, the first one you turn on, either wifi, or 4g, gets control until the next reboot.
I cannot find any way around it. Going to test a stock rom.
Stock ROM had 4g turned on and connected. (this is stock with the latest update)
Turned on wifi, it changed the status of 4g to Disconnected and it did enable wifi.
Must be something with the radio..
I am on DC 3.2.3 and baseband version 2.05.00.06.10
I'm on DC 3.2.3 Baseband version 2.05.00.06.10.
Radios *should* be fine. I did whitslack's method then flashed DC on top of that. Grrr... Sure is annoying having to reboot twice a day.

[Q] 3g Mobile Network Issues

A lot of times lately I'm losing my 3g Mobile Network, my signal strength will be a full 4 bars and I still get the issue. Usually if I reboot the phone it will come back. I'm starting to think it gets lost after it connects to WiFi and then when I disconnect WiFi. Anyone having this issue? If so, are there any tricks to getting this to stop?
My phone is completely stock 2.2, no root.
I'm not sure which of these events may have triggered my intermittent lack of 3G connectability but these are the only changes I've made since this started happening:
1) Upgraded to Froyo.
2) Performed the .dun trick to allow 3g Hotspot. (Although I never use it, I tested it a few times but this problem happens without the Hotspot turned on.)
Did you do a factory reset after the froyo update?
Sent from my Incredible using tapatalk.
Nope, I used the SD card method before I got the OTA. Have never done a factory reset.
I have this as well, be it im on a different carrier (Cricket) but it appears in all stock htc froyo builds.
My assumption is that is the radio being used. of how HTC's implementation of Froyo interacts with the radio.
I switched radio's and havent had it occur on me while in the OS yet, and it does occur sometimes on boot still, but if it loads on boot it seems to stay up and stable.
My trick is to turn airplane mode on for about 30 seconds (30 seconds after i see the airplane icon), then turn it off, i assume this reloads the radio, when the brings 3g back.
I can also read my nv settings with qpst and reflash them back to the phone with no changes, which causes the radio to reload as well, and 3g ALWAYS kicks back on.
Also updating the PRL (even if its the same PRL) seems to work as well (assuming this is due to the reboot, which reloaded the radio)
The radio i am using now is:
2.15.00.09.01 - Seems pretty stable, except the occasional one of at boot, which is fixed by airplane on/off.
From what i can gather this nothing to do with custom roms, as many offical Verizon customers on Official NON Rooted 100% completely stock phones have this as well.
Hopefully HTC/Verizon will fix this in a MR update.

I'm gonna try that next time it happens. Easier than rebooting, then it wont bother me too much.
I had that problem once, and never saw it again.
One problem that just happened for a second time today is I cannot send or recieve MMS. HTC had me reboot the phone and call VZW support, of course they yelled at me for not using a task killer -.-
The reset worked, but I'm going to get annoyed if this becomes a regular problem
I have same setup and same issue. As soon as I made the EPST changes for tethering and hotspot, I started having this issue where I'd lose my data connection completely after disconnecting from my wifi when I leave my house. A reboot of the phone fixes it but it's still kind of annoying. It happens I'd say about twice a week.

Wi-Fi working erratically, stuck at "Turning On..."

I grabbed my brother's S II X because he was tired of it (phone having some issues that I didnt get so far, but he's not the most responsible phone user out there). Screen is cracked (not a huge crack, touch works 100%), bezel in poor condition, but otherwise works great.
Except for the Wi-Fi, which most of the time I cannot get working for some reason. It just stays off, or if I go in the Wifi menu and turn it on there, it shows "Turning On...", then stays there. Sometimes it starts working for absolutely no reason, sometimes it works from a cold boot, sometimes it works after enabling data/4G and messing with other stuff. I can't replicate the fixes. And it will also "disable" itself automatically for no reason after a while (could be minutes, could be hours).
A quick search made me realize this was a recurring issue with a few phones, not only the T989, but the fixes are missing.
It was doing this on stock 4.0.3, now I flashed AOKP's latest nightly (2013-02-22) and the issue is still there. I havent touched the kernel at all, other than dumping AOKP in there (if it includes a custom kernel then I guess I did, but otherwise I havent flashed anything else other than AOKP).
Anybody knows what is going on, or a tip to figure it out? Its rather annoying not being able to use Wi-Fi, especially since I was hoping I could change carriers to drop my plan prices by half by losing unused data.
I have a Canadian/Telus T989D, using the TLLE4 radio. I will try the TLLG2 (Koodo) radio and see if the issue is still there, but Id like to have a few ideas to try out since Im not really used to the inner workings of an Android phone.
Up, I really need tips on how to try and fix the issue. The phone is barely usable, the USB won't connect to the computer 19/20 times, Wi-Fi doesn't really work, and BT doesn't even turn on. I needed to remove the SD card from my old phone to put in this one and manually transfer pictures I took for job, to put them in the computer...
I flashed TLLG2 radio (Koodo) and Wi-Fi worked immediately after, but again stopped working shortly after. EDIT: BT doesn't seem to work on TLLG2, now that Im back on TLLE4 it works, but WiFi still doesn't work

wifi hardware failure?

i have a bone stock att variant of the m9. a week ago the wifi got stuck, and would not turn on. it would get stuck at "turning on wifi". i tried a lot of things - battery draining, toggling data, bluetooth, airplane mode, etc.
i unlocked the bootloader, rooted the phone , s-off, supercid, tried a handful of roms. nothing. the wifi doesn't turn on.
i'm beginning to think it's hardware.
any suggestions, other than sending for repair? can i gently hit it in some angle to perhaps see if something's come loose?
out of ideas on my end.
thanks.

Airplane mode constantly turning on and off?

My phone is rooted, im on stock 5.0.1 no custom recovery or anything like that. I haven't changed or done anything to the phone recently either.
If I hold the power button down and look at the airplane mode option it will flicker on and off and as I lose service. Every now and then I'll get service for 5-10 seconds but most of the time my phone signal and data connection are off. Wifi and bluetooth work.
Any suggestions?
Unrooted the phone and went over to Sprint. They did a factory reset but the issue still persists. If anyone know how to fix this or even has suggestions please let me know. Its an otherwise perfectly working phone.
