Galaxy Nexus HDR - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I've been looking around but I can't find anything, but are there any ROMs or APKs floating around that enable HDR for the Galaxy Nexus? Is it something that can be enabled with software or are there hardware limitations? Thanks

Hardware prevents this. Search for any of the threads already about this for more detailed explanation.

mind explaining....i found about 4 different threads here on XDA and not one of them explained why it was hardware related. at least not with supported facts.
i am pretty sure this is all software. IIRC, i watched a video of someone who switched it from regular to HDR and the image on nexus 4's screen changed when they did that. now this may have been just an increase/decrease in exposure to prep for the 3 different exposure shots.
does the N4 ACTUALLY take 3 shots at different exposures and then process the image? or does it just take 1 and "fake HDR" it?

Yea I've seen most places saying it needs to be enabled in the software but there are also a few that say the hardware prevents it. It would be nice to know if there is a solution or not.

A HDR picture is produced by taking 2 or more pics at different exposures very quickly. It can be done in software for sure, but I think the delay between the pictures will be too long to be taken when holding the phone by hand without some hardware magic.

HDR is purely a software feature, I'm guessing Google wanted it to remain exclusive with the nexus 4.

I don't think its hardware... Just search in HDR camera in the play store... You should be able to find it.

The way Google did the solution makes it incompatible with Galaxy Nexus...
They did it in a way that the camera driver has to provide one or more scenes that have HDR support.
Obviously, it is very possible to do it in Galaxy Nexus, it has a really speedy sensor and is able to take many pictures very quickly, and as everyone knows, HDR is a software task, getting "the best" out of two or more pictures that have different exposure settings. But, the 4.2 AOSP Camera doesn't have this support, it only exposes HDR if the camera driver has HDR scenes/modes... As no one (I really don't know who has the sources and could do it) bothered to update the Galaxy Nexus camera drivers for Android 4.2, there you go, no HDR mode using AOSP camera.

I use HDR Camera+ with my gnex and it works very well. Just make sure to hold your hand very steady or rest it on something

Jello effect w/ video recording. Why hasn't this got more attention?

(can't post links still)
youtube[dot]com/watch?v=gymA26jqtTQ
It's really the only thing that's stopping me from buying the Galaxy Nexus. In my opinion the Galaxy Nexus can't take video if that's what it's producing. Anyone here a photography master of sorts that can shed some light on this issue?
Through my research I've found that the jello effect caused by a rolling shutter can be fixed in post production, but is something like this fixable via software/firmware on the phone?
What's going on? It's a bit shocking that nobody is concerned about this issue.
are you serious? "what's going on?"
it's quite obviously image stabilisation.
The sensor basically just relays data, OMAP camera hardware interface process it (stabilisation etc...) and Android presents, maybe tweaks it a bit and saves it.
So an eventual "fix" would be in OMAP firmware, not Android right?

I don't know, but there is an option in Google Talk to change image stabilisation effect.
I have the same thing, but I think that it is image stabilization.
I've just replicated this issue and must say.. I'm totally not bothered! The image stabilisation is actually pretty good and the ony time i can make it do this is if I jiggle the camera... unless youre planning on trying to mock up an earthquake effect, I dont see this being an action you would do. In fact, due to the good image stabilisation, its pretty hard to do this jiggle accidentally, you must be quite determined to create this "jelly" effect (I'm in the UK, hence I get a jelly effect, not jello )

If you don't want to read, its because it uses a CMOS sensor. Affects cell phones and DSLRs alike. Hardware related.

May I ask what makes you so sure?
The video effect shown in the original post and in others if you look, mirrors exactly that of the "jello effect" caused by a rolling shutter, i.e. the sensor, more importantly, CMOS sensors. From what I've found: all cameras, even professional DSLR's have this "jello effect" caused by rolling shutters on CMOS sensors. The only, and most common fix I've found is to edit the video in post production.
It's not quite obviously image stabilization considering how this issue is reproduced in the exact same scenario a rolling shutter w/ CMOS sensor would to create the jello effect. Otherwise the issue would occur all the time and not only when panning quickly. The video below should explain.

This may not be the best example, but it should show you what I am talking about. Others like this can be found by doing a simple Google or YouTube search.
The problem is oscillik is both a) incorrect, and b) an asshole. A dangerous combination to be sure!

LOL, funny stuff.
I know what rolling shutter effect on CMOS based cameras is. This looks more excessive than rolling shutter, and looks more like image stabilisation.
People really need to stop thinking that SmartPhones are the end all be all. Unless a phone is specifically dedicated for a camera as it's main feature, then of course people should be concerned.
People here really plan on shooting lots of hd video with their phone? If quality really matters a dedicated camera would be better served...from what I can see this is pretty trivial. Then again, the only thing I take video of is dyno runs and fun in bed...
Again not hardware involved!!!

Awesome! Glad to see this fixed, and nice find by the way. An update to the default camera app will come I'm sure. Until then this essentially fixed the problem, whatever it was, if image stabilization, I stand corrected.
it is image stabilisation, as has been proven by the fact that using another application gets rid of it.

Here's a 1080p video I took at a Football stadium. Big game, I luckily shot the only goal at Arsenal Vs Man City on Tuesday.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxsdD7iPpnM&feature=g-all
I tried using the LGCamera app mentioned in the YouTube post but it crashes on launch. Has anyone else had any luck?
GSM version running 4.01.
I use 720p because of the 30fps. 1080p is 24fps on the Gnex.
No thanks to 24fps.
That explains why image stabilization is having a hard time at stabilizing the image at that resolution at the frame rate.
I think image stabilization works best at higher frame rates.
My two cents.
Having said that, I do feel rolling shutter is a underrated issue with smart phones and point and shot. I would much rather have 720p without rolling shutter than 1080p with in.
I think post processing like deshaker is some cool stuff too. There are some really cool videos on youtube.

If they could do deshaking in realtime and eliminate rolling shutting... That would be cool. Some day.

FB17 - Zero shutter lag camera

Ok guys - i'm somewhat of a noob.
Obviously the camera in fb17 hasn't changed at all. What are the chances (even if samsung does not update to the galaxy nexus camera app) that it can be ported over to the E4GT with zero shutter lag capability. I mean, afterall the camera specs of the E4GT seem to exceed the galaxy nexus...so why not?
Any educated guesses here?
Thank you in advance.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
great question, frankly.
i wonder if this is something that will change with a final build, as it didn't seem to me that the press release was saying this was a "nexus" feature, but an ICS one....
that being said, and pardon my lack of correct terminology for phone motherboard HW, but it may be something similar to a "chipset" issue, or a CPU/GPU to camera HW communications issue, if this is indeed a HW issue and not simple a missing driver or software update not implemented yet. I wouldn't think it has anything to do with the camera HW itself. A 0-lag camera would have to be about either a really well written driver, or a specilized feature of a chip that can communicate the information to the CPU.
You can push it via adb i think ssconceptz did it.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
You made some good points...i hope it doesn't end up being a hardware issue...
oh wow...let's hope for the best i guess
Wow, great question, I hadn't even thought of this. I must admit I tried the camera on a Nexus and was kinda jealous. Let's hope for the best!
Its hardware. The Sensor on the Nexus is new and designed specifically to process a picture in a fraction of the time a standard sensor does. In doing this it was not possible to have the sensor as high res (8mp) as the Epic 4G Touch. The Epic Touch actually has a very low shutter response time, and high process time for an 8 MP phone sensor.
Oh maaan that's messed up. I specifically got the E4GT thinking it was a new software feature that got introduced in ICS and since the hardware specs were similar to the galaxy nexus, I didn't think it was going to be a problem...oh well..

5 megapixel, not that that matters. But I also don't think it's backside illuminated like the SGS2 and iPhone 4S. Could definitely be wrong about that one.
Does SGSII leaks have instant capture?
Just use "Camera ICS" on the Android Market...
It is the Stock Camera from the Galaxy Nexus as you wanted, but should be compatible.... you must be running ICS I hear....

Will 1080p video recording ever work normaly?
I do.t know ebout everybody else because I havent seen no threads on this but my 1080p has "ghosting" and lags on two different Epics and all roms.720p is beautiful but 1080 is useless.I don'teven know why they included that option.
AOSP Camera works fine in FB17 but yes it's hardware related not software. You can try out the ICS theme we just posted for FB17, it has the Camera from AOSP in there.

Is HDR in the GSM Gnex OTA?

One of the things that was absent from the leaked camera .apks for the Gnex was the HDR mode we saw on the Nexus 4. I was wondering if anyone who's running 4.2 could check and see if HDR is included in the full OTA. I hope that its included because that could help with some of the low-light issues that the Galaxy Nexus has had since launch. I'm honestly surprised that it wasn't added before.
Thanks to any of you who can answer.

this is what i concerned most too.
i re flash to stock rom earlier, then flash the 4.2 update, however, i still cant see the HDR option.
waiting for port to toro first
The nexus 7 doesn't ...you probably knew that
HDR is nexus 4 only, it has to do with the nexus 4 sensor which has native HDR capabilities
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I updated my Takju Galaxy Nexus to 4.2 but there is no HDR mode. I don't understand why Google has dropped that because I don't see any hardware requirements not meeting. HDR takes 2/3 images with different EV settings but requires the camera to be fast enough so that no shakes occur between those 3 images for it to be perfect. The Galaxy Nexus camera is fast enough to do so, heck even a lot slower iPhone 4 camera had that feature. I hope some dev to port that to Galaxy Nexus. Also I am noticing a bug in camera where the whole screen rotates in the camera UI rather than just icons as it was earlier.
HDR capabilities Sensor has nothing to do with HDR. You can make HDR photo with $50 camera... if it has manual exposure compensation. You need 2 or 3 step exposure increment.. 2 step works better with 3 step you will get crazy colors and end up with something like this which looks unrealistic

I think they removed it. It never was a really big feature, I think they focused more on filters in 4.2.

I wouldn't get my hope up regarding the HDR feature. HDR means that several images with different exposures are rendered into one single image. Normally you need a tripod for this, otherwise the images won't fit each other.
HDR can be great, if used right - but need a lot of manual image processing. Have a look at my flickr account for some HDR images: http://www.flickr.com/search/[email protected]&q=hdr
Or shoot in raw format and do the HDR in photoshop

Maybe it's due to the fact that Nexus 7 isn't Miracast certified? I'm a little unsure if Miracast is hardware dependent but someone might enlighten the subject. I know that dongles are available for TVs that don't support it out of the box.

I've heard differing stories on whether out not the Gnex will support Miracast, but it is definitely hardware dependent and must be certified. I told everyone nearly two weeks ago that the Gnex would likely not support HDR and was shot down for it, but i sincerely doubt it will be official.

True, there is the Miracast Certified thing. But Sony will update 2 old phones with Android 4.1 and give Miracast features and some older Samsung Devices like the SGS III got Miracast Certified as well. So they "could" have done that as well on the N7 I guess. I still hope that it's just a matter of time and we get it with a later update..but who knows :/(

Basically, an easy way of thinking of it is this:
HDR is a physical thing
4.2 is a software thing
Just because we get 4.2 doesn't mean we get HDR because you'd have to add something physical to the camera to get HDR (which is impossible)

If you don't know a thing about basic photography, you should refrain from spreading misinformation.
HDR, by nature, is fake. It's software-based. Always has been. You need to take multiple pictures at different exposures and then combine them into a single image in post-processing. There's no way around that.
Cameras try to even out the whole image, to grey it out if you will. HDR corrects this, but multiple exposures (shots) are needed.
My guess is that the HDR feature that was added to Android 4.2 is currently optimized to use some gimmicky hardware feature of the N4 camera, making it incompatible with any other phone. They will mostlikely release a universal HDR option in a future update.

[Q] Camera sucks on M8 GPe

There's no way around it, the camera on my M8 GPe sucks. I even had to switch to my old Nexus 4 just now to get a picture that was decent. This was mainly due to the Nexus 4 lighting the flash while focusing which the M8 GPe doesn't. Not sure why, they should work the same...
But I believe the overall quality was better on the few pictures I took while I was on stock. So is this possible to fix? With a new camera app maybe?

Can't say I much disagree with you here. The One GPe is pretty damn nice except for the camera. The Sense version of the camera that I played with in the store was better. My problem is that the flash doesn't seem to illuminate subjects at all, particularly if you need to take a photo of a business card or wine label in a darker room. As a result, I've been using VSCO much more often (which I generally used only for 'artistic' subjects. Sorry I don't have a better solution for you.
Google should force the manufacturers to give out all apps included in the stock versions through Google Play and make them available to the GPe versions...
I hope Android Silver will be the solution for this problem.
Stock Google camera sucks donkey balls. Excuse me for my choice of words but it's true and we all know it. A big weakness of any GPE phone or Nexus phones for that matter.

That's actually the point. I'm not taking pro shots by any means and it's still not usable pictures. Last time I couldn't get the focus right since it doesn't flash the LED during focus. I'm not sure why anyone would accept blurry pictures no matter what they were supposed to be for.
Phones of the same price gets better pictures and cheaper phones with stock Android gets better pictures. And when HTC makes a big deal about "ultrapixels" we are entitled to complain.

My personal opinion is that it's harder to get a good picture with GPe. Slower shutter, harder to focus etc. If everything gets right I assume both versions are able to make equally good pictures since it's the same hardware.

[Q] [Q/DISCUSSION] Camera Slo-Mo 240FPS

I got really exited about the new OP Three, there are just a few aspects I don't like, one of them being 120fps filming instead of 240fps. I'm a complete noob, but I'm trying to inderstand why it can't record 240fps videos. As far as I know, our processor (SD820) can manage 240fps (see S7/G5), and I guess our camera sensor can too (IMX298), but I couldn't find that information.
Anyway, previously I was interested in getting slow motion on a DSLR camera (Canon EOS 700D), but I found some reasons why it would't be possible: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/in...r0ic25ieqeee0&topic=11570.msg113776#msg113776

3. The internal buses that move the raw data from the sensor to the image processors can't handle that much data (1920*1080*14bit*60fps = 1.7 Gigabits per second)

OP3 can record [email protected] video, which would require 3840×2160×30fps=248832000 bits/s, while HD 240fps video would require 720×1280×240fps=221184000 bits/s (I'm not taking into account color depth since I assume it'd be the same in both cases).
Furthermore, some time ago, when camera2 api was first released, PkmX achieved 120fps and 4K on a nexus 5, which couldn't officially do that and had a far older sensor.
Since OP3 will be really developer-friendly and its sources are already available, do you think it'll be possible for developers to get 240fps, even on low res videos? Can you think of anything that could be a limitation?
Anyway, if I buy the phone eventually, I'll learn a bit about development and try to get it.
(Maybe I should mention that I found this digging into the sources, but I don't even know if it's related

you know the nexus 5x initially just had 120 fps and now it has a 240 fps mod, but thats due to the fact that google camera had just restricted it directly inthe apk itself, people just edited the google camera and BANG 240 fps on the nexus 5x.. oneplus3 could be a different story. i really wish it had it though, im like so close to buying this phone ! in the end i might just end up with the nexus 6p due to this feature

I bought the 3. So far it's not looking good. It looks like the camera2 API implementation is broken for photos and who knows what for video.
They released some source and made a big show about it, but there is still proprietary code they haven't released and may never--they never did with the One which still has no camera2.
Might want to hold out on the 3 for things to settle and by that time the new Sony should be out with a much better sensor.
