Hi,
Being in Australia the Captivate Glide is not available locally so ordered it online via a parallel importer.
I was supposed to receive the AT&T version but due to no stock I received the Rogers i927R version.
I cannot root the device as my work place prevents it since I need to use it for work related messaging.
1. Is there a list of differences between the AT&T and Rogers ROM's ?
2. I'm on Optus which uses 900/2100MHz, so the phone will connect on 2100.
Using an App called Network Signal Info I can see data connection switching when I'm moving around as normal, but the data symbol in the notification bar doesn't match when on 3G as follows:
NetInfo | Speed | Notif-Bar-Symbol
GPRS | 55kbit | G
UMTS (3G) | 384kbit | 4G <-- doesnt say 3G
HSDPA | 7.2Mbit | 4G
This a bug or ROM incompatibility ?
Thanks.
The only differences I know of is that the Rogers ROM is carrier-iq free and the tethering option is unlocked.
In my AT&T version, I can't find any way to manually toggle between 2G and 3G networks. However the network info apps/widget show it's automatically switching between EDGE, HSDPA and HSPA.

It would be handy to sometimes by able to force 2G to save battery.
Anyway, can the Rogers ROM be flashed onto the AT&T Glide and still work ?

Good point.
Sounds like I should stick with the Rogers one they sent me rather than swap it for an AT&T version since the Rogers one will be most compatible without having to 'root'.
Carriers in Australia seem to allow tethering by default as long as you have a working App for it.
Thanks.
Which parallel importer did you use, do they have an online storefront?
Hope the Rogers version pricing comes down as fast the AT&T one. That's I went for At&T, down the line I'll end up flashing it with an open ROM. Mostly because of OpenVPN support.

Indeed that's why I asked, since I don't use any data packages.
I checked my mom's S II, appears to be an AT&T carrier limitation. It won't even scan for other networks. I set her S II to 2G.
Earlier I wasn't concerned with the AT&T ROM, but this one is annoying, I could save some serious battery time by switching to 2G.

They've been very helpful and responsive, trying to get stock as quickly as possible.
When they couldnt get the AT&T Captivate Glide they sent me the Rogers Galaxy S Glide.
Seems that was the better way to go.
AT&T locks down their network and band select while Rogers does not. AT&T uses an "H+" on the HSDPA network to show status while Rogers uses a "4G".
Learned by flashing Rogers ROM onto an ATT cglide. Changed the model to 927R as well. Went back to ATT when I noticed the loss of the ATT wifi options.

So even after rooting the phone, there's no way to manually change bands while on the AT&T ROM?

Which WiFi options? Is the Rogers ROM disabling some WiFi options?

I'm using the Rogers version in Australia.
I have all the normal WiFi options and have used it at home and on public ones with no issues.
I think, just guessing, that Tynar is talking about the customized WiFi options on the AT&T ROM I have read about which gives you access to their own WiFi network.

Yep, I since had a look at the User Guides, of which there is a different one for each version Rogers and AT&T. The ROM's have been customized to show different symbols for mobile connectivity.

Ya... Thats at&t limitation, I guess... But atleast in my sister's AT&T Thrill phone (running Froyo + rooted with SuperOneClick) the "NETWORK" app (LINK) from AM/PlayStore works and helps in selecting 2G only or 3G only whenever needed...
But even that app is NOT working on my rooted CapGlide... May be because this phone has only rooted-ROM and not rooted-Kernal (as told by rooting guide in cap.glide development section)... Experienced members please help... I badly need 2G only for battery backup and 3G only for good speed as 3G coverage in my place is not great...
Thanks...

With AT&T Rom, you don't have that option.
You can flash Rogers Room (Untouched or Custom Rom) where you have the option of manually choosing network and choosing 2G/3G
Switching to 2G would really save on battery life.
So the notable differences are...
1. The AT&T ROM doesn't allow band switching or manual carrier search and selection. While the Rogers ROM does not have this restriction?
2. AT&T allows WiFi tethering, while Rogers doesn't?
3. Both versions come with Mail for Exchange apps?
4. Skype, G+ Hangouts, Google Talk, Voice and video works on both?
Please add/correct any other big differences. I'll make a table and put it up on Wikipedia once we have the notable differences, that could cause issues with international use.

So both carriers allow WiFi tethering? I haven't personally tested either so I can't be sure.

No need to be rude!
Whenever I switch to a Jellybean ROM, no matter which ROM it is, I cant get a signal, even if it is listed as working in the original post. Usually I just cant get data or MMS on Sense 4/4.1 ROMs, but with JB I dont get any. Does anyone know whats wrong?
Make sure you have the correct APN settings for T-Mobile.
BTW doesn’t T-Mobile use 1700/2100 AWS band for 3G data? One X doesn’t support 1700Mhz, so I don’t think you can get 3G on it, only the older terribly slow 2G data service.

Yeah, I know I wont get 3G. I dont get any cell service at all. No calls, no text.
I have just received an i747 from a friend and had unlocked it to be able to use my T-Mobile SIM. Now the phone works but I cannot call out OR receive calls unless the phone is on EDGE. If it has a 3g connection I cannot call out or receive calls for some strange reason. When I try to call out it will not ring and hang up after about 20-30secs. I can also not if I turn the data off completely.
The IMEI does match the back off the device and i have system reset the device. I tried it while on: stock unrooted 4.1 / 4.4 , stock rooted 4.4 , and a custom rom (currently SlimKat). They all do the same thing.
Any fix for this would be great. My best guess is there is something wrong with my efs folder but everything seems to be there so I am not sure.
At the very least is there a way to disable 3g all together leaving only Edge and LTE? Although this is a last resort.
Thanks.
Edit: I forgot to mention that messaging and data connectivity work absolutely fine and I haven't had a problem with that.
Does T-mobile use AWS in your area? I read that AWS has to be renabled each time you start/restart the phone. The i747m (Canadian version) software doesn't natively support AWS.
if thats the case found this

Is there a chance the dropped calls could be due to an incorrect APN setting?
^^I thought APN settings affect data only and network type (gsm, wcdma) affect voice calls.

You're correct, once again I put mouth/fingers in motion before fully engaging brain. APN does control data, internet, mms, etc. I guess I was thinking AWS was related to data frequencies instead of voice frequencies.
^^ No worries. We're all here to learn from each other.
hello every one.
My lte doesn't work. I already test with the rom paranoid and CM.
I m from morocco our 4g is new and i think is the same as the europe 4g (lte).
Do you have any idea ?
Pls help
Thank you for your time
up
Help pls i need to flash modem ?
Which carrier are you using in Europe? Are you roaming from T-Mobile or have you purchased a different service/SIM card in Europe?
Also, what country are you in specifically?
There was a guide somewhere on XDA regarding Qualcomm processors and band unlocking using QXDM (LTE) and QPST (GSM/WCDMA) though I forget the exact name. I believe there was also concern that it could damage antennas. Also I have no idea if it actually works and mucking around in the NV RAM space is very risky. I would not advise it.
Is at least the GSM service working? If so, is it really that bad that you need LTE? Personally I would leave it at "oh the gsm works, I'm good". :good:
Depends on the carrier you are using, is your phone unlocked? I would assume that it is since your can receive gsm signal.... Anyways, what you would want to do is check your network's APN and check our phones APN settings and add the 4g/LTE APN settings to your phone manually... Then restart your phone and try again, make sure you select the apn after adding it so you know it's active. Try that. If that doesnt work, then go into your APN settings again and just do (reset apn setings) or something along the lines of that which resets/restores your apn settings back to normal/default.... either one could work, try the first one first ofc! G:L:
Hello there hope all of you doing well
i had Tmo SGH-T999 S3 which is unlocked but after unlocking its stuck on 2G Network i couldn't use 3g network
i search on google and i found this code :*#197328640#
but i don't know how to use it any way can you help me
wish best times 4 you ^_^
Did you sim-unlock the phone using a code?
I'm also having this issue. I have TMO SGH-T999 S3 sim unlocked before via software (not unlocked via code) and always stays on E (2G). I am thinking that i got messed up after the unlock. My IMEI is still intact btw.
First thing is to double check that your IMEI exactly matches the one on the sticker under the battery. If it checks out, the next best step is to reflash your current or newer stock firmware. (This can be caused by mismatched firmware so by flashing it you will either fix the problem or eliminate it as the cause).
You may also want to check your IMEI against the blacklists online. Especially if you bought it anywhere but a retail store.
Unlocking via code or secret menu should not affect radio bands available in the phone.
WCDMA Band preference
I've checked the WCDMA (3G) band preference available in my T999 S3 and below are the only option available:
The mode preference menu: *#2263#
The information menu: *#197328640#
WCDMA 850
WCDMA 900
WCDMA 1700
WCDMA 1900
WCDMA IMT2000
WCDMA ALL
... and found out my carrier band preference for 3G is 2100. Seems i'm out of luck for 3G data and since this T999 cannot support 4G LTE. I guess i'm stuck on E (2G) data unless i use WiFi.
P.S - Is there a way to add a 1800 or 2100 band preference to WCDMA? :fingers-crossed:
Check the General section in AT&Ts forum. They had something like this if I remember right. They could enable use on a different band, but I don't think it would stick after a reboot. It's been a long time since I looked at it though, so they may have made some more progress on it.
Goodbye 2G (E) data connection
I'm happy to report that my (WCDMA) data speeds is now functional on my SIM network carrier! :good: Loving the speed browsing at last . Although showing as 4G but i know my T999 is not capable of that and not very sure.
Again, thanks DocHoliday777 (I don't know how to link your name) for giving me the idea about the Modem mod. I just followed the guide on the link below and used the NV Data backup from T999L file. So for any users of T999 you can try this mod but please do it at your own risk and don't forget to backup.
I hope this T999L modem mod can be included on the newer root66 baseband/firmware so it can be permanent?
Anyway, just follow the guide on the link below and hit thanks!
http://http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2344627
P.S - To access the modem setting on my SGH-T999 I've used the code *#0808#. And my final WCDMA setting i chose WCDMA ALL. Goodluck!
