Hi Folks,
Tried to have a look for the answers to my questions but cannot find definitive answers.
I get my Note 2 Titanium tomorrow and am selling my iPhone 5
Questions are:
1 - Are custom ROMs specific to carrier/network, if it's a US or International phone (UK for mine) or anything else?
2 - If ROMs are specific to carrier/network does this mean that I can install any ROM on my phone as I have purchased a SIM Free model that is not locked to a carrier/network?
3 - Also are backups for CWM or TWRP are saved on internal or SD memory? If the memory is formatted is there a measure that prevents the removal of this backup or will it be wiped also?
4 - Can someone confirm if you root the phone it voids the warranty. But if you return it to stock does it make the warranty valid again?
That's all the questions I have. Everything else is self-explanatory thanks to people who've posted guides and videos on how to root etc.
TIA.
Roms are not carrier specific, apart from the ones with dedicated forums, it's the lte version and the Chinese versions that are different.
Backups are saved to sd card, a regular wipe doesn't delete them. Just copy them to an external sd to be on the safe side.
When you root and reboot recovery, the flash counter goes up. I think this voids the Samsung warranty. But it's easy to reset the flash counter and make it impossible to see that the device was modified with triangleaway. Some countries have specific consumer legislation, for instance in my country, where any electronic device has 2 year warranty, rooting the device does not void warranty unless it's proven that rooting is the direct cause of malfunction.

For exemple; Whould the Swype function disapear?
Whould my currently existing Guarrantee disapear? (In the thoughts that the phone goes broke)
Any risks according to the health of the phone?
I have no experience at all in this subject as you may see.
At last, why are you rooting, whats the most positive thing about rooting? (except that the phone is totally controlled by your own needs)
No, the swype function won't disappear if you root.
If you're talking about warranty, well, it depends. Some stores still acknowledge warranties even if a phone's rooted, and some don't.
Risks? Well there's bricking your phone in the process, but it's gonna be almost impossible if you just read, read, and read instructions/posts about rooting before doing so.
Rooting gives you all the access to your phone. After rooting, you can install apps that greatly improves your battery like juice defender and freeze bloatwares using titanium backup. You can also install custom roms that is better than the stock rom which can improve performance of your phone. (made by the most awesome devs here in xda)
If you're super bored with your phone and you feel that it needs a face lift, ROOT it! It's gonna be legen... wait for it... dary!
2 days ago i installed almost latest open rom and after new rom installed i made update by OTA. I also rooted my I8150 because its damn easy. The most problem for me is to get info about which one files i can delete or freeze by Titanium to not destroy the system. Maybe someone can help me ?

İ have questions about rooting too.
Will rooting with unlockroot.com will increase the flash
counter?
İ cannot ask it to the releated forum because i am new user.
Thanks for any help.
Regards,
Don't take my words for granted since I'm pretty new too,but afaik only flashing custom roms increase that counter. And there's a way to reset it

Best bet is to take the insurance from your carrier if something happens claim and pay deductible. It can go from $50-$200 depending on your device, if you are under your 30 days warranty you can exchange or return it no questions asked... rooting will not harm your phone, is flashing new roms and specially new kernels you have to pay very close attention to what you do!
The only way you will trip Odin counter is when you flash the stock firmware using odin and download mode, the newest devices will not reset its counter even with a USB jig like the Samsung gs2 skyrocket.

Hi guys,
I have samsung note 2 N7100
Android version 4.1.2
I am just looking around and I see loads of stuff about rooting, I came from Apple iPhones coz they are **** now lol and i have jailbroken all my devices. Had my note 2 for few months now but I am worried if i root it I will loose my warranty and might mess up my phone....
I seen the tutorials and it looks really easy but lets say down the line I want to un-root my device, could I leave no trace of the device being rooted?
I had to replace my old note 2 and it was rooted i managed to un root it but the benefit was that I work in the phone shop and I replaced it.
SHOULD I ROOT THE DEVICE?
WHAT BENEFITS WILL I GET?
Cheers guy
p.s. love the community here!
Hi,
Even without root, the Note 2 is still beast.
But with all these customizations, tweaks, improvement going on in the development threads, it's a GO.
Plus, you can unroot easily anytime you have a computer.
Cheers!
First of all! Welcome to the family
Well here's what! Rooting your device is basically allowing your phone to run apps and do special operations that it cannot normally do and also flash custom roms. If anyone else can help with a reply that will be awesome. Just go through the step by step process in either this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1896696 or this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1923956.
For more understanding, watch videos on youtube on the terms: rooting, custom Rom and custom recovery. If anyone can help it would be appreciated!

Well it's upto you. You'd get a HELL lot more of options with a rooted devices than unrooted. Personally, I find absolutely no reason not to root, and it would be such a waste to not unlock the full potential of this beast. It's an awesome device as it is, but it's even awesome-er when your root

It's easy to remove all evidence of rooting if you ever need to. Still I don't think you should rush into it if your uncertain. There are benefits I've gained from rooting though nothing I couldn't live without. To some extent I've been rooting for so long it's just a habit now, I'm just used to having it, but even if I didn't have it on this phone I'd be happy with it.

If you know valid reason to root your device then root it, don't rush for fun or experiments. when you find some stuffs needs root that is must for you then go and root, but read couple of times before it.

Me neither. However it's a fact that a small number of units shipped will develop a fault. If you're going to put big money into a phone line the Note 2 then it's not unnatural to want assurance that you are going to have protection if you are one of the unlucky ones.

Warranty is always a question of time.
The advantage of rooting is difficult to explain to everyone who is doubting about that.
For me rooting is something that should not be necessary.
There are many users that will never use root access even when it is available.
But there are thoughts that root access will lead to problems or misuse.
For me root access is usefull in some cases. For example to install Whatsapp on tablets with wifi-only.
Not a question of advantages and disadvantages of Root OR how it is helpful
I mean to say You can claim warranty even you have device rooted with flash counter 0.
2 main reasons for me :
- Blocking ads
- backing up my entire phone.
You can't do that without root.
Now that my phone is rooted i've done other changes like installing the aosp camera to use photosphere and CWM to backup and install zip easier.
But I keep stock rom with stock kernel, with this phone there is no need to change it to my mind.
With root you can put any tiers application in the multi windows right?
You can also disable bloatware or freeze them with greenify.
The only thing is missing with is the undervolt settings. That's why I'm already in custom kernel/ROM.
But when 4.2.2 goes out I'll certainly go back stock ROM which i hope, will increase battery life.

Not in the good ole United States of America (but there is more too this?)
If you purchase a Samsung Galaxy Note II (or any other phone) from a Authorized Dealer, it comes with one year warranty and guarteneed warranty per terms of that dealers contract. If you unlock/root/flash, whatever, you break that contract because of something YOU did, not the Authorized Dealer, therefore, they are not responsible for it, YOU are.
Now, as someone that has unlocked/rooted/flashed MANY phones over the years, every set of instructions I have every read.....1. Explains the above first. 2. Immediately explains to read ALL the instructions first and understand them before you attempt anything. 3. Explains THEY are not responsible if you brick your phone. 4. They always give detailed instructions (or link to them) a. How to put it back to stock and b. Lastly, DO NOT TAKE PHONE BACK TO DEALER ROOTED!!!
Now, with that said, I (we) in America have T.E.P. (Total Equiptment Protection) that I pay $11.00USD a month. This insurance is in case I lose my phone, its stolen, I drop in bathtub, run over with car.............I pay a deductible ($150.00USD I think) and they give me a new phone.
Now, these are two different things. During the initial warranty period, If I have SDS, I take it back to Authorized Dealer, fix my s**t! After Warranty, period, I send it back to insurance company, pay deductible, and either they send you a new one OR send you a agreed upon compatable device!
Cheers!!!
For me rooting was a must for directory bind. As has been said blocking ads is essential greenify good and the increase Volume mod was also a god send.
However on the downside I've lost sky go.
I rooted my Samsung day 2 and wouldn't turn back. Iv undervolted getting 2 days out of my battery. Root is awesome.

Can I root and keep everything stock and get ota updates? That would be perfect because I really dislike custom roms. I've got the 4G version.
Hello everyone!
I thought I bought a unlocked phone from Fry's electronics! but it ended up as a AT&T SGH-i317 Galaxy note 2
I tried to take it back but they said the only way it to buy an international phone??
what I got is a Galaxy note 2 SGH-i317 AT&T android version 4.1.2
can anyone tell me the very best way to root this phone and the best custom recovery app for this phone and also
is there a stable or should I say the best reliable rom to use for this phone
I can see all the post for all this for this phone but I wish to only do this once
and not like all the apps I did on my old htc evo 4g
Thanks for all the help and advice
Bill
Rooting
yes I have gone through and have read all the post I can about rooting this Samsung Galaxy note 2 SGH-i317
I see two ways of rooting
1 using the program Odin
2 ExynosAbuse-v1.40
3 then there is this one here http://forums.androidcentral.com/sa...s/247891-t-guide-how-root-unroot-t-note2.html
I am sure there are other way I have seen on the web. But then we read about this knox thing about rooting
then ExynosAbuse says that way is the most secure way, safe from hackers
does this mean the other ways of rooting open your phone up for hackers to get in??
I am SORRY I can not write code I am not a computer or cell phone geek (brainy person in the computer world)
but I do not wish to brick, mess up my new phone!
So I am here to ask the question what is the best way to root and why
my aim is to get rid of the AT&T stuff I also would like to install a custom recovery / boot loader and a stable custom rom
on my Galaxy note 2! like I had with my old phone htc evo 4g
but from what I have read on the web it seem the Samsung phones have issues with rooting then the htc evo 4g did
so my I politely ask for help and information on this rooting of the Galaxy Note 2
to me so far number 3 from about seems good but then for safety I got to go number 2 from above??
HELP PLEASE
Bill
Root is done
well I rooted my phone as I have gotten no advice from here allot of peek-a-boos I see
I tried the Odin way but I kept getting a c++ error from both of my computers and the program had to be shut down?? oh well
then I tried the Skipsoft toolkit and that got it done
now is there any one out here that is a rom installing maniac?? Could you tell me please what rom out there that is fully functional and
stable like the stock rom on this Samsung galaxy not 2 SGH-i317 is!
my reason is to have a clean system on my phone with no AT&T gunk while I am on T mobile service
is there any help or advice for this or am I posting to dead air
Bill
Use CF auto root....found in the development section under the same name...
Verify that you are using root for the 4.1.2 firmware..and done...
Don't use those odd root methods or you'll have issues...
CF auto root is the root standard for this device...
Once rooted...you will want to flash a custom recovery and make a full nandroid backup of the device...(I use TWRP recovery...but you can use CWM as well without issue)
Both recoveries are also available in the development section in their respective threads ...
Store that backup on PC so you don't lose it to bad sd cards or deletion...
And do "NOT" upgrade your bootloader....or you'll never be able to go back to pure stock later if desired...
Read read read...and go slowly for comprehension...
Happy flashing....g

This is a bit of a longshot but here goes... so I have "The Bard's Tale" (game) which I purchased (actually, FAOTD) from Amazon Appstore.
It's HUGE - 3.6GB! I never installed it to my phone because Nexus 4 (16GB), but I have a 64gb microSD on my Galaxy Tab PRO so I thought: Finally I can install it!
Problem is, the app cannot "see" my external SD card. The installer gives me two options: External Storage or Internal Memory. For both it says "8000MB free" and it ends up on my internal 16GB storage with either option! And yes I have about 8000MB free on my internal storage at the moment.
Even in Settings | Application Manager, if I choose "Move to SD" it only seems to move about 25MB, not the 3.5GB game data files.
Any ideas??
(BTW: other threads on this subject I've found via googling seem to be from the pre-KitKat era. Their tricks don't seem to apply to our KitKat samsung devices!)

It looks like my only solution is Folder Mount
I'm not rooted (yet). Reason is I'm hearing lots of talk about how rooting it will "trip Knox" and therefore my warranty becomes void.
My tablet is only 3 weeks old, can't risk voiding the warranty this early!
Knox warranty has nothing to do with the hardware warranty. Unless you're going to be using Knox software, don't worry about the Knox flag.

Also, if you use Towelroot, this does not seem to trip Knox. At least for most who care. I used Towelroot and it worked fine.
Then after a day or two I went full bore and installed custom recovery. That is what trips Knox. Then the flashing began....

Yea, I've been wondering about using the Towelroot approach but since I will install custom recovery it doesn't really matter. So, for me, might as well trip Knox and not worry about it. It's kind of like putting a little scratch on a new car. Then you don't have to worry about the finish anymore....
Hello XDA forums,
It's been a while since I've last logged onto my account and have asked you guys for some help (which has always been excellent and top notch).
I've been looking for some answers to this question for quite some time now and I need your help since my Google/XDA searches have come up empty handed. I've also reached out to the r/android IRC and they've suggested for me to use MDM system which I'm not willing to pay for at this stage in the small business I work for. I would like to apologize in advanced for using any terms incorrectly. Please don't hesitate to correct me.
So onto my question now: I would to create a ROM to be able to flash to other SM-T700 devices right out of the box (no root, no voiding warranty, etc etc). This ROM would have a home screen with specifically installed apps and widgets, and a few security settings enabled. I imagined setting up one of my tablets and somehow "cloning/back up" that ROM to my desktop to be flashed (using anything; ODIN, SDB, fastboot, or heimdall) onto other SM-T700 devices right out of the box.
Is this possible? Am I making sense?

Unlocking IMO?
Would I be voiding the warranty for all devices or just the one I'll be using to clone the ROM?
Thanks for taking the time to reply to my message.
All devices, you can't install the needed custom recovery for both backup and restore w/o voiding the warranty.
If you consider unlocking to void the warranty (you normally do). There are different opinions on that (also depending on where you live).
