okay ive looked around and havent found anything regarding this topic.
im trying to unlock bootloader and root my htc one v (cdma) using the only computer i have avaliable, and it just so happens it runs fedora. im no noob to the rooting world, just new to it using linux. ive never had a problem using htcdev.com, but the instructions to unlock bootloader mainly refer to windows users.
Can someone please walk me through this process for linux users like me?
I've already got the files i need (android-sdk_r21.0.1-linux.tgz and fastboot.zip)
now how do i use the terminal? (as dos is to windows)
I think all you need is adb setup

Details please. Got the files htcdev told me I needed, just am clueless how to use terminal. Or is there other way to go about it? (one click unlock/root for linux?) Step by step guide would be appreciative
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/HOWTO_Setup_Android_Development
that looks like it will do the trick for you. if you dont plan on making android apps, skip the part about installing eclipse. your main focus is the android sdk
once you get the sdk set up, open it up and make sure to install platform-tools, fastboot comes as part of that package.
that guide doesnt seem to talk about setting up the drivers, so look here (should be distro independant, maybe)
http://esausilva.com/2010/05/13/setting-up-adbusb-drivers-for-android-devices-in-linux-ubuntu/
hope that gets you started in the right direction, i use ubuntu and havnt touched fedora in a ages
i already have tat sdk file (android-sdk_r21.0.1-linux.tgz) can find how to install the platform tools. and the sdk comes with 3 folders, yet only "tools" has 115.4mb of data in it. no where in that folder is platform tools. why is windows easier to root phone with, then a computer using linux (basically same thing as android) its impossible without serious coding skills... if it were my computer id have ununtu also... in other words no progress yet. and beginning to really dislike fedora...

Hey guys. I got my Incredible on launch day, and loved it. I installed the PSX Emulator and was amazed at the actual capability of this device. I stumbled on here and started to see "root, flash, beta, OTA" and all this jargon is like arabic to me, I don't really understand what it means. I followed the instructions to "root" my device, and I don't know if I was successful, my phone operates the same way. Now here's where following instructions runs array for me...I'm running a Macbook, and I haven't really seen any step-by-steps for Mac. So all I'm asking is for a...glossary of the most important, used terms. And maybe someone to walk me through however to get the most out of my Incredible. Thanks guys.
I have a thread from yesterday where I had someone help.me from beginning to end. Unfortunately you're going to have a problem when it comes to adb shell and creating the semi and tools folders. Adb comes as an *.exe file which won't run on a MAC. I actually had to use my wife's netbook to go all the way through to installing Froyo. You can root your phone using unrevoked ASSUMING you've got at least OS 10.5. It will not work with 10.4.
Check my thread called a noob's adventures in rooting. I think that was the title.

Something I just thought of, if you had Bootcamp on your Mac you could use that for everything. I don't have it on my macbook but it wouldn't be a bad idea.

I have Bootcamp, but I don't really know how to set it up, nor am I the kind of person to drop 400 dollars on an OS.
So if you have Bootcamp installed I'm assuming you're partitioned for Windows and/or mac OS? If so, regardless of the mac OS, as long as you've got at lease Windows XP installed and can boot into that you can follow my other thread. I'm a virtual idiot when it comes to rooting and roms. If I was able to do it, anyone can. The thread turned into a step by step guide for idiots and I was able to do it. Wi.does is the only thing you need.

Uhh... you can run adb shell in windows, linux, or mac. You just need to download the proper OS version from google.
Yep, like the above poster said, just install the android sdk for Mac and you can execute adb from there. Im confused as to why everyone is telling you to install windows. 0___o
The reason I said Windows was because I was using an unsupported version of the OS. Unrevoked doesn't support 10.4.

Hello There Fellow Desire HD Users,
Im A Bit Of A Noob When It It Comes To This
Basically I Want To Know If It Is Possible To Root My Desire HD And Install CyanogenMod 7.3 On A Mac??
If Anyone Has A Tutorial For Dummies That Would Be Great.
Thanks
You can use VirtualBox to install Windows 7 Enterprise 90-day trial.
What version software is your DHD on now?
You definitely shouldn't use a VirtualBox instance when everything works fine with Mac.
Most of the binaries that are used to gain root run on the phone.
The other binary is 'adb' (Android Debug Bridge), which is available for mac.
Thankyou All For Your Replies,

Sorry to rain on your parade, but IMHO it ain't gonna happen. Dev's just dont have the time or inclination to look for a fresh exploit when getting root is really as simple as downgrading, and it really is quite simple see here no need to install windows it all involves using adb so just install the SDK and away you go.
I used parrallels to do the actual rooting, the tools are very easy for windows and they dont seem to exist for the mac

In regards to rooting and such, you don't have to go any further than checking out the Android Development sub-forum for whatever device you wish to gain root level access for. I suggest reading up on what exactly entails rooting your phone as well as what possible consequences could arise from doing so. Jumping into rooting your device without doing your fair share of research is how devices get bricked. Not trying to be a hard ass but that's the way it is.
Word of advice, asking questions for which there are easily found answers can be frowned upon by people here. I on the other hand am a nice guy ... therefore instead of ridiculing you I shall help you out and in return you may hand over your innocent soul for mine has been tarnished by the wonderful fellows of the Internets.
Onto the helping. CyanogenMod has created a wonderful wiki on how to go about rooting your device. Take note that you have Gingerbread on your device, therefore it will need to be downgraded to Froyo prior to rooting.

Here's the deal I'm stuck at. When I download the Android spk and install the tools. Then when I try to put in the code in terminal to cover with my phone it responds adb path not found or does not exist. I added a path variable or whatever it said to do. I rooted two Sony phones already so I see don't think this should be to hard.
The other question I have is on my other rooted phones is it OK to factory reset and root again. I have a backup app. I wanna wipe my partners Sony and have a clean start.

You didn't set the path properly and/or didn't reboot your computer; either fix that or just run the commands from within the directory ADB is located in.
As for your other devices, doing a factory reset from recovery will not lose root, all it does is take whatever ROM you have back to a clean start (no installed apps, no tweaks, no accounts, etc.)

Depends on where you speak of "factory reset".
For example within the phone's OS, if you do a factory reset under system setting, then yes that would be true.
However 'factory reset' from say clockworkmod or 4EXT recovery means that it wipes the /system /data /cache etc partitions, and there would be no rom to boot into (something that can scare a new person if they have no clue that they need to flash a new rom back on, or restore nandroid backup)
The problem with a lot of those questions is that without clarification on where they are asking, can lead to undesirable results, so naturally people should read and re-read before doing anything.
ok thanks.

All of this information should be explained in whatever guide you've been linked to, including the where you obtained the SDK from, also if you've rooted two other phones already this should be child's play for you.

I didn't mess with adding the variable paths and just went to the location where the adb.exe file is located and ran it from there. For me I installed the Android SDK on the root of my C: drive so adb.exe is located at C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools. Therefore when I need to use adb I just go to that location through the command prompt and run adb from there.
As mentioned in the Cyanogenmod ADB guide, all you need to download and install using the Android SDK Manager are the Android SDK Tools, Android SDK Platform-tools, and Google USB Driver package.
As for your Sony devices, when you do a factory reset through Android or through recovery it will not unroot your phones. You will need to look for a guide in the forums for those Sony devices on ways to remove root and return the phones to stock.
Got an Australian Gnex running 4.04. The OTS jellybean update is months away according to Vodafone AU so ive been looking into manual solution that causes the least disruption possible. Very tough diciphering the language on here. My apologies but there doesnt seem to be a specific thread that can help.
From what i have read - I can open the Bootloader and somehow flash the factory image without rooting?
Was on the dev page at google to get the latest firmware? - ive DL'd yakju Android 4.1.1 (JRO03C)
I have already unlocked the bootloader with a toolkit for mac found here on XDA. i just dont know what to do next? The file is a .tgz which ive never heard of? dont you normally copy the whole zip file to the SD card then boot into recovery and somehow flash the new firmware? Help.

It is not complicated at all. If you don't know how to open a terminal window and type in commands, it has nothing to do with android or flashing. It has to do with knowing how to use your computer.
I already replied to you in the other thread: to switch directories in a terminal, you use the cd command, i.e., cd /this/is/where/my/files/are
Lack of knowledge on how to use your Mac should not be confused with anything Android... not related at all.

I genuinely appreciate the help, but realise that 95% of computer users will never open a terminal and type a command. Ive typed your commands in terminal but its not working and i dont understand directories. If i dont ask questions ill never learn will i? I cant see your reply anywhere??

Asking questions if you don't understand is perfectly fine... and I'm willing to help. But complaining that a procedure is complicated and lengthy when it actually is not, is not cool.
As for your issue (although I've never used MacOS): if you save the files in a directory call junk, and junk is located in myname, the the command to reach junk would be something like: cd /myname/junk. Or, find a way to open a terminal in the junk directory to begin with -- I'm sure if you search any Mac help site (with something like how to open a terminal) you can easily find that out, no?

The fact ive sat here for more than 4 hours reading through threads, searching forums, reading tech sites, asking friends, unlocking the bootloader, downloading firmware, trying desperately to make 'terminal' work with your method, and leaving posting in this forum as the last resort - is testmanet to how complicated this is to a new user - especially one on a mac system. Ive used one click root methods previously when i had access to windows - unfortunately i dont anymore. I think the guides are easy to follow as a PC user, not necessarily for a mac. Ive tried to use terminal to locate the files, i cant do it. dont understand the basic principals involved to understand the mistakes im making.

I think you are making it more complicated that it really is. When you open a terminal, in which directory does it open? In other words, what is the prompt that you see? THAT is the directory that you should download and extract all the files to.
That's the problem you need to fix. Read some basics about macosx. Get comfortable using it. Then proceed with flashing your gnex.
This looks like a good tutorial:

You can still flash the stock jb as per my instructions. It's just that rooting made no difference - it was a wasted step.
And as I said before, you don't have to learn the commands, as I've written them out for you. You just need to find out how to save the files and open a terminal in the same folder, which doesn't seem like a difficult thing to do. Google should be able to tell you how to open a terminal in a specific folder. Or, as I mention before, save the files in the folder which you already have your terminal open.
The whole purpose of my guide was to learn -- and you are have a more difficult time than others because you have taken shortcuts (I.e. 1-click methods) in the past.
I agree, not everyone has that kind of time: I have 3 kids (with everything that comes along with that), work a high-stress, 70 hour a week job, and no IT/tech/linux/android background, but I managed.

Hey there, I'm a Virgin Mobile Canada customer and have the SGS3 (same sh*t, different heap). I followed THIS post to root my phone using the Terminal utility on my Macbook. You will need to download some software from Google and set it up prior to doing anything with your phone. Search Youtube on how to install and setup the Android SDK.
Good luck!
One tip I can pass along is this: You may need to add a "./" (period and forward-slash without the quotation) in front of adb commands in the Terminal window.

Was just about to post that link! You're one step ahead of me! I used that method and it worked for me, in Canada (SGH-I747M with Telus).
Just make sure you have adb installed with the Android SDK and if it is NOT in your PATH then either add it or go into the directory with the adb binary and use ./adb ____________ for each command: where _______ is the part that is coming after adb in that link.
Michael
Ya... It was my second time using the shell and I couldn't figure out how to add the variable so I did it the "tough" way lol.
Cheers!

I added adb to my path on my mac. No more. / for me.
