Yes, unless you backup everything before hand. Its easy enough. Just move everything from your SD card to you computer, partition, and move it back.

Internal Memory

I have a question I think it might be stupid but I was wondering when we wipe our phones just a factory wipe or when we go to flash a rom does that mean the things that are saved to the internal memory are going to be wiped also.

Short answer... No.
I think its good to know why. Consider it this way: the internal memory is mounted as if it were an sd card. On any other phone, when you root and flash, the sd card doesn't get affected because you are only altering the ROM. Everything on the sd card stays the same. Same process with ours: the phone registers that partition as an sd card, separate from the ROM.

Flashing w/o SD card?

Hello guys, please go easy on me with this question. So I'm switching over to Verizon and was pretty set on getting the nexus. I currently have the gs2 with T-Mobile and am an avid flasher. My only concern now is since the nexus doesn't have an SD card, when you flash a new ROM how do you back up all your stuff without losing all of it when you wipe? Is it possible to do it all through the phone without copying the files to a computer? Thanks a lot. Really looking forward to joining the nexus side of the xda community!

No need to worry because it doesn't wipe the saved data it works as if you have an SD card. Hit thanks if I helped.

^^This. the gnex has a virtual sd card which while flashing a rom, kerel, etc in cwm is not wiped.
Phew, that's awesome! Thanks!

Just FYI, really...but I thought I'd throw it out there.
The newer recoveries do have an option to wipe the SD card.
Just...don't touch that?
Haha.
And the STOCK recovery does wipe the SD card when you do a "factory reset."
All of the custom recoveries wipe /data/ but ignore /data/media/ which is where your virtual SDcard is located...so you lost nothing that was on your "Sdcard."

Is there a stock rom?

Point me in the right direction please

You need to partition the SD Card if the Rom is A2SD enabled, and you want to use it. Yes it should be done before you flash the Rom. You should also find out what type of partition. Does the the Rom call for an ext.3 , or ext4 partition. If you are going to partition your SD Card you need to make a backup on the PC first. Partitioning the SD Card will wipe the card clean.

yea im thinking of flashing the sensuASOP and it says to partition to 2 then 3 then 4.
also im gonna use a friends pc to back up my current files but can i restore them back into the sd card once im done with the partition/flashing and my phone is up and running?
***You need to partition the SD Card if the Rom is A2SD enabled, and you want to use it.***
will the rom still work if i just flash it without doing the partition?

Not all Roms will work. If the Rom is built so that a2sd is enabled automatically, it will not work correctly. Things will be missing. You can have FC issues. In some cases I've had them not even Boot. So it is better to have the SD Card partitioned before you Flash if the ROM calls for it.

all the partitioning gets done thru recovery.
so where within recovery is partition actually done?
Hey guys, noob here. I am going to be flashing my phone today too.
Death by soaps mod seems to be what I am looking for, but I just want to make sure I am doing everything right.
I have turned s-off with revolutionary and backed up everything with both clockworkmod and smelkusmod and saved everything on my computer.
I am not 100% sure how to continue with partitioning and flashing though. Do you have a recommended guide partitioning and flashing with your mod? I have found some general guides, but they are for other mods and I dont want to screw anything up.

Ok. Simple.
1. Move everything on your sd card to your comp.
2. Use smelkusmod as its the best.
3. Go to partition card or something to that extent.
4. Set your desired size, 1 or 2 gigs is good enough, depending on how many apps you have/use.
5. Set swap to 0
6. Wait for it to partition.
7. Upgrade ext from 2 to 3 to 4.
8. Put all your stuff back on the sd card.
Flashing
1. Use format all/superwipe option in wipe menu of smelkus to wipe.
2. Go to flash zip or something like that.
3. Select the file and confirm.
4. Wait for it to do its thing then reboot.
Done!

Ok thanks, looks like I am up and running. I will report back if smell burning plastic or anything unusual :fingers-crossed:
If I want to mess around with any other mods is there anything special I should do first? Or just repeat the same steps (partition, superwiper, flash)?
Thanks again.

Nope no need to partition again. That's done. Also you dont need to wipe for mods unless the OP states it.
For Roms, however,(what you just flashed) always do a full wipe/ superwipe and if going between versions of sense and aosp, always wipe the sd ext.
For kernels always wipe cache and dalvik cache before flashing.

As an extra precaution, I always wipe Cache / Dalvik. Before flashing a Mod.

So in sensuASOP it says to partition the sd card THEN flash the rom if i have the zip files saved on the sd card wouldnt i lose the zip file hence i cant flash the rom? Or do i flash rom first then partition the sd card?

I change rom, in time to give the error gave Dalvik wipe sd-ext, I've tried many things but could not fix, you know something about it?

Its a non issue....I believe it just means your not using your SD card to increase your dalvik cache therefore its impossible to clear it because you weren't using the feature in the first place

Please don't double post.. There's an edit button.
As for your question:
How can you fix it if it isn't broken. Just ignore it. Its irrelevant.. This has absolutely nothing to do with being able or not able to flash ROMs. It's much more likely you've flashed the official ICS ROM, or bought it pre-installed which has locked your bootloader. Follow the unbrick guide for your model if that's the case.. However, if you're unfamiliar with ROMs, or even just this model of phone as it sounds, it's probably a good idea to post your current rom, and more details if this is the case before doing so.

your error has nothing to do with the ext partition. I think your issue has a simple fix download the sd formater app for windows (google it) format your sd card using the default settings (do a backup first) and put your card back in your phone after you have restored your backup. You should be good to go. The format that LG uses on the stock sd card is incompatible with CWM.

As has already been mentioned, the Nitro/SU640 etc doesn't use sd-ext for its dalvik cache. As it's not used, you are going to get an error because your recovery is trying to wipe a path that doesn't exist. There is no need for it to exist in the first place, so the error really isn't anything to be worried about.
You say you cannot change ROMs with the sd-ext error... what exactly does it tell you when you try to flash a different ROM without trying to wipe dalvik?
When you change rom wipe dalvik without making the rom works with some problems, I have done tests but always gets something without working

What things aren't working? Just about all the ROMs have things that aren't 100% working correctly, random reboots (no matter how infrequent) etc. Are you sure you aren't mistaking the already existing bugs in each ROM for an error related to wiping dalvik? Just trying to cover all possibilities because dalvik is, if I'm not mistaken, on the system partition and gets wiped when performing a system wipe.
I just ask because I never even wipe dalvik...

How to format internal sd card?

Hi everyone
I would like to know how to format my phone and not the external sd card. Is this something that can be done? I would like to know how to do it and what are the risks of losing imei or efs or worse.
Reason why i am doing this is because i cant get my gps to work on jedix rom. I checked with lots of people with my carrier and they all confirmed that its not the rom its my phone. I tried numerous fixes to get the gps working but with no luck. It works fine on a stock rom but as son as i flash jedi there is no signal whatsoever.
I believe something got screwed up after i flashed cm10 a while back and then flashed jedi after. I think that was the culprit and i figured maybe if i format and start from scratch i can get it to work? Please help thanks.

Have you tried getting your navigation lock on stock then booting straight to recovery and flashing. To answer your question, boot into recovery and select wipe internal sd and there's no risk. Except deleting all pics on internalvl which of course is what you're doing.

Hi
No I havent tried getting nav lock first and then flashing Jedi. I will try that. Now when I flash back to stock and get my lock on
do I need to do a full wipe (cache and dalvik) before I flash Jedi because that is what its recommended be done. I am scared to flash
Jedi without a full wipe.
If the first thing fails I will go ahead and do a wipe of the internal memory. Now will I lose root and TWRP once i do that? And also do I need to do a full backup in twrp but backup to ExternalSd because I will be wiping the internal one? Please bare with me I have never done a full format and don't want to screw up my phone. Thanks!!!

Yes full wipe. The key is to actually have a navigation lock, then with navigation still running boot to recovery and install jedi
