Flashing w/o SD card? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hello guys, please go easy on me with this question. So I'm switching over to Verizon and was pretty set on getting the nexus. I currently have the gs2 with T-Mobile and am an avid flasher. My only concern now is since the nexus doesn't have an SD card, when you flash a new ROM how do you back up all your stuff without losing all of it when you wipe? Is it possible to do it all through the phone without copying the files to a computer? Thanks a lot. Really looking forward to joining the nexus side of the xda community!

No need to worry because it doesn't wipe the saved data it works as if you have an SD card. Hit thanks if I helped.

^^This. the gnex has a virtual sd card which while flashing a rom, kerel, etc in cwm is not wiped.

Phew, that's awesome! Thanks!

Just FYI, really...but I thought I'd throw it out there.
The newer recoveries do have an option to wipe the SD card.
Just...don't touch that?
Haha.
And the STOCK recovery does wipe the SD card when you do a "factory reset."
All of the custom recoveries wipe /data/ but ignore /data/media/ which is where your virtual SDcard is located...so you lost nothing that was on your "Sdcard."

Internal Memory

I have a question I think it might be stupid but I was wondering when we wipe our phones just a factory wipe or when we go to flash a rom does that mean the things that are saved to the internal memory are going to be wiped also.

Short answer... No.
I think its good to know why. Consider it this way: the internal memory is mounted as if it were an sd card. On any other phone, when you root and flash, the sd card doesn't get affected because you are only altering the ROM. Everything on the sd card stays the same. Same process with ours: the phone registers that partition as an sd card, separate from the ROM.

Wipe data, wipes internal SD card too?

I've been holding off on putting music on my phone because I didn't know if wiping, would wipe my music out too, so does it?

Anything on your internal memory will stay. When you wipe data factory reset it only deletes the root partition. Doesn't include the sdcard. Internal or external. In cwm it will not delete uour music if it is stored in the internal SD card. If you do a master reset through the stock ROM. It gives you the option to format sdcard. If you check it. It WILL wipe the internal SD card.
In conclusion:
Your music should be safe if you wipedata/ factory reset from recovery.
If you do a factory reset through the stock ROM and you check format SD card you will lose anything in the internal SD card.

Uh.. it clearly states that factory data reset will wipe your internal SD when you go to do it.. it won't wipe an external SD card but YES it does wipe the regular built in SD
Sent from the current Heavy Weight Champ GALAXY SIII
You actually have the option to wipe your SD card at the time of a master reset through settings. What it states is all system data will be deleted. Including contacts saved on phone memory settings apps. Etc. It does NOT automatically erase your internal SD card when you do a regular master reset.

no it does not. i do not have any other sd card in my phone except the built in one. i have flashed about 5 roms and each time i did a full wipe in CWM and my music AND photos stayed.
That's not the same as a factory data reset. Reread my post.
Sent from the current Heavy Weight Champ GALAXY SIII
Sorry to correct you but a factory data reset does not wipe the internal SD card. It doesn't matter if you wipe your phone through recovery or settings. Unless you tell your phone to it will not wipe the sd card. I don't know where you are getting your information from but you have to tell your phone to format the SD card. Factory data reset does not wipe internal SD card automatically neither does a master reset. You must select that option to format USB storage. In other words internal SD card.

Dang dude I had to restore md5 and try for my self. But I stand corrected.
Wiping data WILL erase your internal sd card.
I went through the whole process of restoring stock rom and put a song in the internal storage root directory and did a master reset. When it rebooted song was gone! First time I see this on a galaxy. In conclusion, it's been tested and YES it will delete your internal SD.
sorry for the wrong info but it does delete usb storage as it indicates in the IMG ingenious247 posted...

is it possible, that being a flash-aholic is messing up my phone?

I'm noticing errors on roms i never used to notice.. like a day after flashing, random apps like messages and keyboard are FC'ing, when they never used to do that.
Is there a guide somewhere how to completely wipe every trace of use on my phone and start fresh? I'm afraid of wiping away some critical file and bricking my phone by just wiping everything I can find though.

Go into CWM and Factory Reset -> Wipe Cache -> Wipe Dalvik Cache. Then go to mounts and storage and Format /data, Format /system. I normally format /sdcard as well, but MAKE SURE YOU HAVE BACKED UP TO AN EXTERNAL SD CARD.
i always due all except format SD card.. maybe thats why things are in conflict.. ive never done that one...
With the new method of using the internal SD as the phone data storage this is entirely possible. If there are files/databases for apps stored on the SD that is incompatible with the apps in questions problems can arise. I would suggest you make a full copy of your internal SD to a safe location and format, then after the ROM install if you find you are missing app data for something that cant be easily rebuilt you can copy that app's data back specifically to avoid resurrecting the problem.
Sounds like a wise move. Thank you sir.
I imagine I need to put the recovery image back in the sd card immediately, or is cwm smart enough to save that one?

No, the recovery is stored in its own partition and up until the last version of CWM i used (6.0 something) there is no option to modify the recovery partition at all. I switched to TWRP for multiple reasons, one of which is the ability to include a backup of the recovery partition in backups.
Is it perfectly safe to format the internal sd card? I've made a backup of the sd card a little while ago contemplating this but couldn't find any good info on this. I'm more or less in the same boat and would like to start 100% fresh

Yeap :good:, the only risk of formatting the internal stoarge is losing the data on it, big shocker huh , unless of course you were to format to an unsupported file system. I dont think this is even possible without trying real hard to do so.

If it is just applications data for the most part I just get rid of it and let the app use its new fresh installed data, even just delete the folder when I have no idea what it's for or who put it there. Because, if the app or system needs it, it will just put it back. Personal data is all I worry about, but I back that up in Google contacts and such so they just show up when it sync.
And I just save zips, and movies, and apk and such.
Then wipe the rest, no worries mate, I don't bother with backup restore anymore.

You need to partition the SD Card if the Rom is A2SD enabled, and you want to use it. Yes it should be done before you flash the Rom. You should also find out what type of partition. Does the the Rom call for an ext.3 , or ext4 partition. If you are going to partition your SD Card you need to make a backup on the PC first. Partitioning the SD Card will wipe the card clean.

Not all Roms will work. If the Rom is built so that a2sd is enabled automatically, it will not work correctly. Things will be missing. You can have FC issues. In some cases I've had them not even Boot. So it is better to have the SD Card partitioned before you Flash if the ROM calls for it.

all the partitioning gets done thru recovery.
so where within recovery is partition actually done?
Hey guys, noob here. I am going to be flashing my phone today too.
Death by soaps mod seems to be what I am looking for, but I just want to make sure I am doing everything right.
I have turned s-off with revolutionary and backed up everything with both clockworkmod and smelkusmod and saved everything on my computer.
I am not 100% sure how to continue with partitioning and flashing though. Do you have a recommended guide partitioning and flashing with your mod? I have found some general guides, but they are for other mods and I dont want to screw anything up.

Ok. Simple.
1. Move everything on your sd card to your comp.
2. Use smelkusmod as its the best.
3. Go to partition card or something to that extent.
4. Set your desired size, 1 or 2 gigs is good enough, depending on how many apps you have/use.
5. Set swap to 0
6. Wait for it to partition.
7. Upgrade ext from 2 to 3 to 4.
8. Put all your stuff back on the sd card.
Flashing
1. Use format all/superwipe option in wipe menu of smelkus to wipe.
2. Go to flash zip or something like that.
3. Select the file and confirm.
4. Wait for it to do its thing then reboot.
Done!

If I want to mess around with any other mods is there anything special I should do first? Or just repeat the same steps (partition, superwiper, flash)?

Nope no need to partition again. That's done. Also you dont need to wipe for mods unless the OP states it.
For Roms, however,(what you just flashed) always do a full wipe/ superwipe and if going between versions of sense and aosp, always wipe the sd ext.
For kernels always wipe cache and dalvik cache before flashing.
