[Q] Rom searching help - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Im looking for a very simple, stock like 4.2.1 Rom for my galaxy nexus. I've already scoured the forums here and haven't really found what I'm looking for, so I thought I'd post. I'm looking for a rom with a stock feel, so no theming and such, with not too much customization. Just your basics like battery mods, roots, busybox, etc, again a very simple, yet customized rom. I don't want insane options, just a few stable, simple, and efficient roms to choose from. Does anyone know a good 4.2.1 rom for me? Thanks again!

all the roms have their features listed in their threads.. so go in the dev section check the threads and flash the rom you like

Sensless or Stock Android

Hey guys I have been doing quite a bit of searching through the forums and still have a couple questions about custom roms and rooting. Forgive the noobness but the droid incredible is my first android device and I only recently got it.
1. My first question is what is the simplest way (rom + root I assume) to get a stock version of android on my incredible? Also what rom would you recommend (I have seen a pretty big list but know nothing about them)?
2. What is the difference, if any, between a kernel and a rom? Ive seen both words used a lot and have seen kernels that are stock and roms that are as well. Which would I use between the two?
I know these questions may be dumb but I have been searching for a couple days and have gone through hundreds of threads trying to find the definitive answer (there were some benefits though, I use launcher pro and the droid x's keyboard now) any help would be appreciated.
1. You are right in assuming that the quickest (and only) way to get a stock version of Android on your phone is to root your phone and install a custom recovery that will allow you to flash a rom. It is not really possible for me to recommend a rom because rom's are all about personal preference and my preference may be different from yours. That being said, if you are interested in stock Android, check out Cyanogenmod. The biggest thing right now is that for the Incredible, Cyanogenmod is the only true stock Android that is compiled from AOSP (Android Open Source Project) however it is still in its early stages for our device, so it's still buggy. The other roms are modified versions of our stock sense rom, so some of the roms are modified to have the bulkier parts of of the Sense UI removed, but it is still a Sense rom.
2. I'm not going to profess to be extremely in the know about kernels, but a kernel is the go-between for the hardware and the os/applications. If you want to learn more about kernels, you can read the wikipedia page about kernels found here. Basically what you need to know is that the rom is the operating system, so if you wanted to change the OS such as from Sense to Vanilla Android, you would flash a rom. If you wanted to change the way the system runs, such as if you want your processor to be overclocked or undervolted, you would flash a kernel.
Hope this helps.
That answered everything! Thanks for the reply and I will keep checking the forums for stock roms that seem stable!

Touch Wiz Rom??

I searched threads and did not find an answer to this question. Sorry if I've reduplicated.
I use Galaxy S3 i747 > running CM 10. I wanted to try a touchwiz based ROM. (As to why, I really don't know...thinking perhaps I'm missing something I guess.)
Three questions:
1) Are there any advantages to touchwiz based ROMS? I miss things like the SVoice, etc.
2) Could you name a couple of touchwiz based ROMS that are stable, etc. I'm not asking for "best" just some stable examples. (I'm a noob in the truest sense.)
3) How would I install it once I find one to use? I already have and use TitantiumBackup and also GooManager (which I used to install CM 10).
Thanks in advance!!

1.) Though I am not personally a fan of TW, I can understand how some enjoy the little features built into it such as slide to call, smart stay, etc. Though it is ultimately personal preference.
2.) As I said, I don't use TW so I can't recommended any ROMs, but TW based custom ROMs will be in the android development section. Read the OPs, change logs, and FAQ sections as they have most of the information you need.
3.) TW custom ROMs are installed through recovery in the same way you did with CM10.

I myself have been thoroughly enjoying INFAMOUS S4. It has the features I need, is faster than stock, and is very stable with great battery life. Just did a full backup of 3.3 and upgrading to 3.4 as I type this

does INFAMOUS S4 rom get rid of the bloatware?

Sure does. They also have a zip with the bloat should you require it for some reason.

Instead of giving you a particular ROM suggestion, I'll give you the best way to find the one that best suits you. First, you have to decide what features you want. If you want all the smart stays, the air move, and the other Samsung stuff, you definitely want TouchWiz. If you want a (negligibly) more responsive feel that's more barebones and to the core of Android, go with one based on/around CyanogenMod (or even the Google Edition). Before flashing any new ROMs I'd spend at least an hour reading through both the Android Development and Original Android development sections. You don't have to read every page of every thread, but at the very least read the OP. You should know within the 1st page what features are included, whether it's TouchWiz or not, if it's themed, etc. Most of the TW ROMs are already debloated and will say so in the OP. The CM bases have no carrier bloat at all. If it interests you, take a look at the last few pages. The reason you want to read the last few pages is to get a feel of what bugs are present. As the ROMs get updated and the threads grow, chances are that problems reported on the 3rd page aren't going to be relevant on page 26. If you try one you like, make a nandroid backup of it and keep the backup updated: that way, if another one pops up that you want to try, or you just feel adventurous and want something new, you'll have your backup(s) and can much more easily surf between ROMs if you so desire.
I've gone through Wicked, Jedi, Infamous S4, Infamous Google Edition, and Alpha roms. Personally, I liked Jamison's Infamous roms the best. I'm currently on his Alpha rom, which is based on the international phone's firmware(or something like that?) and has no wifi calling. But it's pretty smooth. Currently Jamison seems to be the fastest on updating all three of his roms, so if you want continual added features/bug fixes go with any of his roms. Wicked was very nice and stable when I used it, but I got flash-happy and couldn't stick with it since he updates like once a month. In the end it's all up to you though.
P.S. The Infamous S4 and Alpha roms recently have had the Samsung apps added back in, not sure why cos I haven't really read all the posts in the thread. You can easily remove them yourself though.

[Q] Difference AOSPXS

Okay I've done (some) searching, but I could'nt really find a answer to this.
For the xperia S we have a rom called AOSPXS by Apology11. This ROM has working HDMI Radio etc and is running on 4.4.4.
Now my question is how this differs from other roms, like cm11 and PA. Obviously there is a lot of customization in the look of android, but my question is what happens under the hood. I'm sure there is a reason why not all of the kk roms are based of aospx if this has all the functions that you would need. So in short, what's the catch to AOSPXS?
PS yes this is a copy from the general help, couldn't get an answer there

ROMs, ROMs, ROMs... Need help.

So, I decided to root my device. It worked. Now I'd like to have a ROM. I want like Pure Android looking one, but with a lot of customizing options. You can tell me some good ones! But first, few questions.
-Does installing ROM reset my phone?
-Can it break my phone?
This question doesn't really go with ROMs, but can I get iOS styled emojis to my device? How?
Ty for the help, I'm noobie with these things! <3

All the ROMS at the top of the development threads are very good. Some of the best for customization are Blisspop and AICP. Official CM builds and F4K's works are also very good. Read each thread for current bug reports.
You may well lose what's on your phone, use titanium backup to backup apps, and DO A NANDROID BACKUP from recovery in case something goes wrong.
Unless you don't follow the instructions of ROM thread or overclock you phone to silly levels you shouldn't break your phone.
Not sure about iPhone emoji but if you search XDA or Google you should find something.
Your last question almost made me ignore this post. You can't ask questions like that on here! Will get you in trouble with forum MODs.
