I would like to start watching some movies on my note 2. I don't want to download them to my device. I was thinking of using drop box and a program which puts dvds as a file. It takes a rather long time and I would rather not want to do this every time. Is there a website or something that allows you to Stream your own movies for free?
most movies nowadays come with ultraviolet copies. if your dvds don't then try setting your computer up as an ftp server and host them yourself

if you were trying to "share" movies over your own home network, like watch movies that were on a home computer in another room, that would be easy. Stupid easy. Set your folder with movies as "shared" over the network, use something like BubbleUPnP player, or even XBMC for Android (quite a bit more complicated to set up, but Way Worth it, once you set up the library and shares) to browse and watch. (with XBMC, I woiuld set it up on the host sys, set up the libraries and metadata there for sharing over the network.)
if you are trying to "share" movies over the internet (from your home, I assume?), for you to watch when you were out at another location, well that's a hobby unto itself, and outside the scope of what you could expect here at XDA. Learning how to set up a "real" server (FTP, SMB/CIFS), takes time and (at least self-) education. People get paid to do that kind of stuff, right? Worth learning, if you have the time. But I don't have the time to even teach you the basics. There are no basics.
Not to mention most likely your bandwidth upstream from home, on most IPSs, is not very great. I wouldn't want to stream anything but standard definition vid files, And it might "kill" the internet use for anyone at home.
But for fun, here are some basic solutions and/or information for you to explore, get started. If you start to play around with networking, you'll quickly become a "computer genius" to family n friends. :

http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/how-i-set-home-file-server-free-review-freenas.htm (FreeNAS is one of my faves)
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/9659/how-to-install-and-setup-windows-home-server/ (WHS is another fave, even though they dont "make" it anymore, it can still be found, and is a stupid easy way to "get started" in servers if you're comfortable in the Windows environment, I always recommend it to anyone that doesn't want to get into command line *nix kinda stuff, just wants to play around with a functional and easy way to have a server, works great, and completely instantly compatible, obviously, with any Win based PCs at home.)
http://lifehacker.com/5821512/use-plex-to-stream-your-media-from-home-to-your-phone-anywhere-you-go (found this randomly, seems .. idk.)
Good Luck!
I use Remote Media Center from the play store. In conjuction with remote potato server app running on your home computer to serve your media. RMC will utilize MX player to handle the video playback on your phone. (Install MX player). I've been using this setup for almost a year no problem. I've got tons of video and pictures, music I don't need to carry with me.

I downloaded this after seeing your post and have watched every new movie from 2012 I'd wanted to see but wouldn't pay $20 to go sit in a theater full of morons crunching popcorn, slurping soda, texting, talking and making my night miserable what a waste. I haven't been to a theater in 2 year's or so cause of that crap. Price is too high to go watch a movie that you miss half of from the rude idiots acting like they're sitting on their own couch and didnt just pay a small fortune to be there. I can't quite figure out why the prices have gotten so high its not like the theaters have gotten any nicer or more private. I could see a price increase if they weren't packing 200+ people in a 150'x150' room im seats where you're practically sitting on each others lap.

it's basic economics. wherein a business is not considered successful unless there is measurable Growth in profits to show to investors every year. (ie: "how can we squeeze more money from our customers while bringing production costs down/delivering less, and do it better than last year?") theaters have become the worst experience you can have for $15, hands down.
if it wasn't for IMAX, i wouldn't go to theaters at all. even then, at home i've got excellent surround sound, 55" screen. and i get to take pee breaks. and i make way better snacks than Regal. (you haven't lived until you've had my open-faced chopped steak and provolone sandwich)
and people wonder why i'm a verified, unrepentant, and proud pirate. over 700 movies in my collection, and counting. (not to mention TV seasons... and hundreds of thousands of songs...) that's why I maintain a robust server in my basement. any bit of my media collection is accessible by any terminal in the house.
call me a hypocrite if you like, but i never pirate software. and verbally slam those that do. *shrug*

I will be away from my television quite a bit this season, and want to know how I can watch some football on the evo. Minus the obvious slingbox, how do you stream live tv to your phone?
Capture card on desktop, VLC as a streaming server. LogMeIn Ignition for controls. Ta-da.
Slingbox. You can control your cable box and watch anything from anywhere. Its what I use when I'm on the road. I highly recommend it.

Definitely couldnt talk the wife into letting me get the pro since its what 300 dollars. Also, dont really see a need for the HD one since it will mostly be watched on my phone.
I actually found the solo version on Newegg for 156, so I might be picking that up.
Orb is your friend....tv tuner card and access to your mp3 and video collection from one mobile interface. There is an ORB android app but there is no need for it, the web browser works great. Orb has built a nice interface that will scale to multiple mobile codecs. I have been using it for awhile...first had it running for my old nextel blueberry...
yeah but w/out the nfl sunday ticket you can watch 1 or 2 games. with nfl sunday ticket 2-go you can watch any game.
http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/content/sports/nfl_online_mobile
Tuner card in your PC is the least expensive. I typically use that with Orb but I haven't tried it on the Evo yet. Basically the Slingbox is doing the same thing for more money. It's a capture card and media web streaming device. Basically you can spend $100 on the capture card or $200 on the Sling. It's up to you depending on budget and whether you feel like setting it all up.
you can easily get a slingbox on craigslist used for very cheap, $50 or less easily and its far and away better than any other option suggested unless you get the sunday ticket package.

I would be happy with just a Netflix app that solely provides the opportunity to search for movies and manage your queues, not for watching movies on the G2 (although that would be sweet).

androinica claims they have seen the Netflix app on an LG Revolution. But where can I get it for my G2?
I've about had it with Netflix and their crappy movie line up anyways. They charge you $8.99 a month (which is fair) but then they offer so few good available and the others are dvd only. Then they "fix" this issue by charging you more dvds out at a time to make up for it. Its just about screwing over folks and milking them for the $20, 30, or 40 plan. I wish they would just upload all digital streaming and offer dvd to those old fashioned folks who actually want it. Plus, their reasoning for not offering their app on android is ludicious.... I hope something better comes along soon
Damn peoples. You gotta be patient. How are people going to pull and share the Netflix app when they just figured it out recently that one exists for Android. I mean don't get me wrong, I want the app as much as the next person but its not going to magically appear. Let the Android community do its magic. I don't even think people even got to mess with the phone yet let alone the Netflix app.

History of android phones has shown that apps from pre-release dumps and leaks from upcoming phones as well as preview phones have found their way to xda before a phones release. It isn't too far fetched nor unreasonable to have a little expectation that it may have happened or will in this case

Yeah, that sounds about right about the lack of complete library streams. Other the other matter, I'm sure ports will be on the way. The only issue I foresee is linking the account to the device if its ported. Might be a pain to get the port properly to avoid that issue...

I am personally inclined to believe it has more to do with Apple's influence/blackmail than the pirating issue. It seems far fetched that someone would resort to a phone stream to pirate movies or shows.
Im just wondering what kind of things do you guys do to your phones. Roms apps themes etc. Im running cm9 and want to try to find new ideas and apps to make my phone cooler and less boring. thanks in advance guys
My E4GT is pretty much information central. I do all the normal things, text, phone, data but no gaming and rarely watch movies (unless I'm trying to drain a battery lol). However my phone holds all the important information in my life, family events, bill due dates/amounts, appointments, To Do lists, Shopping Lists, car maintenance repair reminders, lists of things I want to read, research or sell, pictures of the people and animals in my life, work and personal email.
I try not to be so paperless but honestly I'd be lost without my phone.
I'd say I just found a new look that I love, I found a cm9 sense theme that looks great on this phone! Any other fun addicting games like temple run?
I use mine for several things daily. Dropbox for reading class notes for college and making transferring new modems, etc a little easier. Shopping, paying bills, calendar stuff. I use the Square app + card reader so I can accept credit cards from customers of my (very) small computer repair business. I plug my phone into my car's stereo and stream pandora when I'm driving;Google Music if I want to listen to my own stuff. I use ventrilo on my phone for some pc games that I play instead of installing an extra program on my pc. I listen to car talk every Saturday via the npr news app. Kroger app for loading coupons onto my kroger card before grocery shopping. I often stream hulu plus or netflix on my television via hdmi adapter. Weather, general news, email, xda (goes without saying), video chatting with friends /family via Skype, gps navigation...... Think that's about it for now.

Here's how to bypass that. Buy a Blackberry, activate it on your account (this will switch your data type in T-Mobile's system and effectively re-zero it), then after 24 hours, change back to your Android, and bang, you're back at a fresh start. Don't forget to return the Blackberry. You can do it sooner than 24 hours, just need to change out the phone in their system. I wait 24 hours so as not to raise suspicion.
Works.

Not ubiquitous because people like you keep saying it isn't. Buy it, try it out...you may find something interesting that will intrigue another to do the same. My local mall uses NFC to give out free songs or magazine articles. What's a couple of bucks gonna hurt? You already bought a $300+ phone...might as well use its features.

believe me, I wish I could think of uses for them that would do something I thought was functional, because gawdamn, the idea is cool. and I do love anything new tech-wise. i'm always an early adopter.
(and I bought the phone outright. $700 bucks w/ tax. worth every damn penny.)
so far, the only implementation I am seeing make NFC worthwhile is sBeam/filesharing, and google wallet (if it worked right now).
I will be keeping a watch on the tech, and I tend to make frivolous purchases (like the AllShare TV dongle), and perhaps I'll keep an eye on you, see if you come up with anything that sparks some ideas.
Anything useful for my personal routine (turning off ringer at work etc.) I have set up in tasker. For little stuff like opening you tube while on toilet, (lol) it just doesnt seem more convienent to tap phone to a tag than to click the app on my homescreen. One thing that I thought would be useful is if I could set it up as a proximity sensor. Ex: when I put the phone in my car dock it turns on blue tooth and when I take it out it turns it off without having to touch another tag?

It does with a little tweaking. It took me a little while to get working correctly but there is a how to thread floating around here.

That is the one I use. You can setup toggles with only one nfc label. For example. Scan it and it will turn off the alarm. And if you scan it again it will turn it on. It really expand the uses of the labels. And you can program e series of actions with it. Hope this help you

yes, just set it up to Toggle the bluetooth - that way if it's on it will turn off and visa versa.
I have similar setups and it works like a charm.
and the tiles will work with Every phone that has NFC, so even when you get a future phone, the tiles will continue to work. I think they are the bees knees.
they become more useful once you mod the phone to work with nfc screen off (someone posted a mod but it only works from lockscreen not screen off hopefully that will be fixed soon)
I have one each on my washer and dryer. they set a "timer" that goes off and tells me when the washer and dryer are done (30 minutes for washer 70minutes for dryer)
I have one on my car to auto set my car locator position one the dev for car locator gets that working right.
I also plan to use them for geo caching. I hope geocaching.com integrates NFC functionality into their service soon is VERY ideal for that.
I also plan to use them on "bins" in storage. I store what is in the bin in the tag. tap and now I know whats inside (working on that soon)
you can use QR codes but they are a pain (have to load an app) and then wait for camera to focus AND they don't like low light. NFC don't care tap done.
also plan to put on on my Radio Transmitter for my competition rocket gliders. tap and 15minute countdown timer starts.
