sms received messages cut into multiples - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I am running the stock sms app on my ATT s3 running JB. I am an iphone convert, so please bear with...
If someone sends an sms to me longer than say 4 lines of text, the sms will be delivered to me in multiple sms'.
Is there a fix/setting for this? My iphone never did this.
-J

Short Message Service (SMS for short) is limited to 160 characters. On an iPhone, multiple texts are usually connected into one by the receiving iPhone (unless using iMessage; I do not think there is a character limit). Android, however, does not do that by default. One choice you have is to download a third-party SMS app, like goSMS. I use goSMS and it works really well, lets you join iPhone group conversations, lets you install themes, and will also connect texts over the 160 character limit into a single text.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

Are you rooted? If so you can replace your sec_mms.apk which will give you Emoji as well as an option in settings for SMS to MMS which will transform long texts to mms to keep them together. I just rename you existing sec_mms.apk to sec_mms.apk.bak and paste the new one in and reboot. Hope this helps. Link below to thread with apk. I credit to original uploader...

[REQ] App to pull/merge Google Voice SMS w/Native SMS

I wanna throw this out there, and see if this would be useful to anyone besides me.
I use my Google Voice number as my primary number. I don't even give out my main cell. So, all of my SMS' go through GV. I also text a lot from my laptop.. cuz it's easier. I know this isn't the case for everyone, and that's why I'm posting.
Granted, the Google Voice app has recently gotten a lot better, but it's got a ways to go.
I use Handcent because I like the customization options, e.g. personalized notification sounds, notif bar icons, popups, colors, etc. I also keep a nice backlog of texts since they're searchable.
But most of my SMS logs (on handcent) consist of responses, and not my messages, whereas the Google Voice app or webpage contains the complete logs. I don't know if the messages could be scraped, and pretty sure there's not an API available (and I'm def not a developer anyway), but curious if there is an "app for this", or if this would be useful to anyone.
Basically yielding:
Accurate conversation (sms) threads in Handcent or native sms app, as well as easier backup system (for Google Voice SMS, at least).
Tangent:
In fact, I'm not sure why Google wouldn't want to give the capability to sync ALL of your SMS' to google voice.
k. hope this doesn't get moved to General land.

ya, I've been looking since the days of WinMo 6.1..
I was just about to make a thread about this. I'm willing to make a app that does this, but I don't know the file structure of where google does things.
If you download the Google Voice App, you can see that some where they store all the SMS data about a txt, they just don't expose that to the user through the web interface.
My idea is to take the Google Voice SMS DB, convert it to the XML format supported by SMS Backup & restore and then merge the 2.
If this app existed or I could make it, I would be able to send through the web-interface and my ipad, etc. Now I don't cause when people reply and I'm at my phone, I have no clue what they are talking about.

actually, I'm going to make a thread in the dev-section about this.
I wouldn't post in the ddevsection. Its against the rules, as it doesn't belong in there.

well, I hope someone moves it then.
Just go to Google Voice, Settings, Syncs and Notifications, Receive text messages, Also via the messaging app. Now you'll get all you're messages through the stock messaging app or Handcent or whatever else you use.
In correct. Go to https://www.google.com/voice and send a SMS and then check your phone to see if that sms that you just sent is on your phone.
You will find that it isnt.

yes and that misses the whole point of this request.
I (and the OP) want to be able to use the web/iOS/etc... to sent/receive SMS via Google Voice. If you do that now, the replies show up in your native app/handsent, but your txt out are only in google voice.
I want to be able to txt from my iPad through my gv# and when I go back to my android phone, I can follow the convos. Also, they would get backed up with SMS Backup+

Oh oh oh, I misread. Yes, I don't think there is a way around this.
im also very interested in this. i text all day on my comp using gv and if i try to go back and read a convo with go sms i only se received texts and not mine.
if u are willing to just turn on 3g and open the gv app, however, u can view the convo in its entirety. still would be nice to do this without having to enable data.

Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
the only missing piece here with GVI is that when you send through GV, you don't get the sent messages back on your phone. The only solution that I've been able to come up with to fix this is an app that syncs between the native GVapp and the native SMS app.
there has to be a db on the phone that stores GV data for the GVapp. If someone could find that for me, that would be just swell.
Anyone ever find a resolution to this?

Group SMS

I have always hated group SMS on Android. This is a huge turn off for people that come from iOS. Is there any way to have our group text messaging behave the way it does on iOS? It just makes more sense. You text a group, you should get replies from the group and be able to reply TO the group instead of individual messages you have to reply to individually..

FYI I just tried both of these and none of them can do Group SMS for incoming. They send out the SMS, but when users reply it receives them individually. Also i notice that some of these apps when they sent out the sms you actually see it send out one sms at a time and that might be the root of the problem. Right now i have been able to do true Group SMS via Facebook Messeger app as it allows for you to send SMS messages for some android phones such as my HTC One X, S3 etc. I just don't like the interface and it's slow.
Does anyone have any other solution for this? A real working solution? Group SMS means when you send out a group SMS and the recipients respond you get all the messages in one thread not individual threads. Thanks in advance.

Group MMS Issues

Has anyone else been experiencing issues with receiving MMS's when they were sent to a group? For example, if someone sends me a picture, with a few other people on the message, I won't get the message. The message will come through and just say "downloading" and I'll never get the picture.
When I get replies then, they are all individual texts instead of embedded in a group.
Thanks for any advice!
That's because androids stock messenger doesn't support group texting. You can send a group text but replies will always come back in individual threads...sorry

Use GoSMS Pro, It's free on the market, and you can make it run in "Lite" mode, It will fully support iPhone Group texting. If you want to reply in the same group, Go to settings, Tap advanced at the top then Send settings > Check the box that says Group MMS chat.
If you want to go into "Lite" Mode, go into the settings and change the running mode. It will still allow you to receive and send group MMS as well as have custom themes. It is really fast in "Lite" mode.

I get this all the time, almost all of my friends and family use iphones. Regularly I get an "empty" text from them and I've been told it's a glitch in the iphone but it doesn't affect other iphones only android users.

I'd also like to add that iphone users can't seem to NOT reply to all.. yeah I know it's possible but they always reply to all even when it's personal. It's the main reason I go over my 1000 text allowance each month.

I use group texting everyday. Every single one of my friends have the iphone and I've used Hancent for years, but it doesn't work well with group texting. Event when I selected Group messaging in Handcent, i would receive each message in each persons thread, not the group thread. My friends with the iPhones said that my messages wouldn't ever appear in the group thread, but showed up in my thread instead. So i just switched to GoSMS Pro and so far everything has been working like a charm. Follow the instructions that Tirionfive wrote and you will not have any issues. Group texting is the $hit, and I really wish that Google integrated it into the stock messaging app. Oh well it will likely be in Key Lime Pie (unless Crapple already patented it already).
I've been using Go SMS Pro for the last few days and it is absolutely great! Not sure I'll ever go back to stock text messaging

Group MMS & Emoji.

One thing i would like to see in ROMS is Group Texting and Emoji. I see the new rom Liquid Smooth added group mms threading. Now is it possible to add Emoji throughout the phone like IPhones? Like i know i can download Chomp SMS or Go SMS and then download the emoji addon, but the emoji addon only works in the SMS app.. I cant use the Emojis for apps like instagram. Is that possible or do Devs have to port that into their ROMS? Thanks.

I second that! I'm a total noob at ROMs and stuff but I've been able to decompile the SecMms.apk and other system apps and I've discovered there is code for both threaded group mms and emojis. its on every ROM in here except TW Roms they dont support it but you can see them if not then just download and app called Chomp sms and it replace you text app with that one and it has all the bells and whistles you want also if you do install make sure to uncheck the notifications on your stock messaging app so you dont get double the notify
I think Google added the code in JB 4.2 to natively support group messaging. The recent updates for the SG2 models won't do group threads. If you use a a 4.2 rom then it should already be in there without needing a secondary program. I'm running Slim and it works fine.

I was reading that 4.4 would have both SMS and MMS in hangouts.
It's working for me very well. But still has some catching up to do even with the stock Galaxy s3 messaging app. Hangouts needs to be able to attach contacts or calendar or even a voice recording.

One contact = two conversations. One for sms messages, one for hangouts messages
I'm sorry to post a full newbie post here regarding this but I'm trying to settle some debate and confusion online about Hangouts 2.0
Basically has google "done it right" this time and copied iMessage? (No, I'm not an Apple fanboy)
The advantage of iMessage is that it defaults to data when possible, fallsback to SMS when it has to.
It's also completely seamless, this is handled for you - no need to manually change from data to SMS mode or anything.
2 more points:
iMessage allows you to SMS a "new" phone number for someone you've never encountered before, iMessage detects the phone number is "iMessage-able" and simply sends via data, no kind of handshake / friendship needs to be setup
and finally
There's no "online" status required of iMessage, you need not "log in" or always be set to online, it's an SMS app natively but you can communicate with people over data without them knowing you're necessarily "online"
The advantages as follows.
Cheapest possible was of conversing with friends (assuming your SMS plan is NOT unlimited, I'm in a country where it's pricey)
Privacy / "aloofness" - the lack of an online / offline requirement allows you to ignore a message and respond at your leisure, be it 5 minutes, 5 hours or 5 days. If someone however sees a green O next to your name with Hangouts, the social pressure / obligation to reply is there, you can't just relax if that makes sense (I guess this is an introvert feature)
Sorry for the long post but I'm hearing conflicting reports online that google STILL screwed it up - but that's from people who have obtained the Hangouts 2.0 APK file and do NOT have 4.4 KitKat, rumour has it that's required for the full backend SMS "engine" update to work like iMessage?
Thanks all, really appreciate your time.
EDIT: This also covers what I'm trying to clarify.
