App suggestion - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Hey guys, as some of you know, 4G drains the heck out of the s3s battery. Some of you have a good build phone and don't experience however, I experience a drain of 16% in 4 hours while idle with 4G on and a drain of 3% with 4G off while idle for 6 hours. That's not normal but I bought my handset from eBay and can't do much about it except get an extended 4200mAh which I just ordered.
My question is, is there an app that I can configure to turn off data when the screen goes off and turn it back on when I turn the screen on. I do it manually and it gets a little annoying having to turn it on and off myself. Thanks in advance

This is exactly what JuiceDefender does. Some like it, some don't. I have been using it for a few years now and if set up properly, can extend your battery life (with regards to data connectivity) quite a bit.
See post 4 in my Battery Guide for how it works and my specific set up.

JuiceDefender

Thanks for the help. I'm going to check it out and make sure I use it right. Seems powerful

[Q] Help me With My Evo please

I have a rooted Sprint Evo 4G and my battery has lasted no longer than 4 hours and change..... i already turned off all the recommended settings, 4g,gps, wifi, brightness, etc...
can anyone please help me...?
do i need to root my phone again?
please help!
are you using it for those 4 hours? I can drain mine that fast easy
I used my Slingplayer app on 4G while I ate lunch today and it sucked out 21% of my battery in about 30 minutes.
With heavy 4G use your Evo will power down pretty quickly. The Battery life sucks unless you know how to underclock or found a kernel that works best for your phone.
If you haven't tried a different kernel that would be my first suggestion.
Edit: Wow. Just seen you have 5 threads started about this. Really?

Most like likely you need to erase battery stats, easiest easiest way is charge your phone to 100% then go to market and download the batterycalibration app. Use this to delete the battery stats. Let your phone charge a bit more after and go about your day, just remember it might take a day or 2 for you to see any improvement but it will help.

Yep. What people have to understand is that most if not all of the battery saving tips will help your phone when idle. When you USE your phone for power intensive applications like Slingbox and don't have it plugged in, you will see battery drops like crazy. Just the nature of the phone and nothing will save you from that. If the OP is seeing these drops from idle screen off use, then he has a problem that needs to be addressed.
My take is that users need to learn their phone, have an idea of battery intensive applications and recharging/extended or spare battery needs. Anyone who thinks they can play graphic intensive games, stream videos etc. for 12 hours will be woefully disappointed that there is no magic bullet to prevent battery drain.

Do I have a bad battery or phone?

I get 3-4 hours battery life at best I see people saying they get 10 hours I don't see how that is possible? Is my phone a dud or what this is very frustrating. It does the samething On the extended 2100mah battery. I'm running aopk milestone 4 and glados kernel

It looks like you were had screen on for close to 2 hours and made a phone call, albeit short. This is normal battery life for as much as you use the device.
You should try manually sync or set the syncing interval as high as possible.
Wifi always ON doesn't affect the battery life unless your wireless connection is weak/unstable.
Lower your screen's brightness or use Auto Brightness.
Fully charge your phone and let it alone for 2, 3 hours and check how much battery drains. If it drains 3-4% in idle mode, it's normal. Check also if your phone wakes up a lot, maybe some apps are running in the background and they wake your phone up frequently.
Hope it helps.
I used to have really poor battery life and like you wondered how people managed to get the stats I was seeing here.
I recently decided to do a factory reset for a different reason and to my surprise my battery life has improved incredibly. Yesterday I got over 18 hours in total with over 4 hours on screen time. This was with the stock gsm battery. Granted I was using wifi throughout but I was lucky to get 8 hours before the reset, even with wifi. With 3g I'm now getting 14 hours easily with over 3 hours screen time.
My point is if you've never done a factory reset, you may want to give it a go.

It's a bit hard to diagnose the problem based on only a screenshot of your battery stats.
Since your screen is using over 50% of your battery life, my guess is that you just had your screen on for about two hours of the total two hours and forty-five minutes. It's normal to not get more than about two hours of screen time. (Tap on the Screen part of battery stats to get more info on how long the screen was on for.)
In my experience with three Android phones (MyTouch 3G, MyTouch 4G, Galaxy Nexus), all the usual tips to conserve battery life pretty much do nothing to improve battery life: turning off syncing and background data, turning off wireless, don't use widgets, turn off GPS, etc.
Pretty much there are two big battery suckers on Android phones and particularly the Galaxy Nexus--the screen being on and LTE being on. If you dim the screen or just keep it off, you will seriously prolong the battery life. And if you use CDMA only, you will also seriously prolong your phone's battery life.
That said, it's also possible something is wrong with your phone... or your battery. We can't know just from the screenshot you posted.
This looks normal. How much screen on time do you have?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
My screen on time is about 1h 30 minutes with WiFi ON.. 3g/sync/gps off auto brightness

[Q] Initial charge?

I hate to be the guy that asks this, but I just want to make sure as from what I understand this is different from phone to phone. From what I understand, Li-Ion batteries, like the GN2's, do not have a memory effect of any kind? And thus all battery calibration rituals and nonsense are entirely pointless for this handset?
The reason I ask is because I wasn't able to charge the device to 100% before use like I was always told to do with new phones. My device was turned on and used until it drained to around 10% at which point it was charged to 100%.
Now, after 2 weeks of use, I feel that my battery is not as good as it should be. I'm barely able to get more that 12 hours. I'd be happy to post some battery graphs in the morning.
One last thing, if I did mess up my battery, or if my battery is messed up or less functional than it should be, would buying a new battery fix all my problems?
Youvare right. All that calibration stuff is nonsense.
I have never charged my phone to full before using and draining the battery and my phone still lasts all day on mostly heavy use.
Could you post your batt stats?
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
Today I ran my phone with the "lowest" possible settings, that is lowest brightness, CPU power saving, and no haptic feedback. I did not turn off wifi. Doing this I was able to get a surprising 16 hours, although you can see from the graph that I didn't use my phone as much. Attached I have a screenshot of what it's like with the highest possible settings (no power saving stuff, and brightness all the way up, but no GPS). Sorry I don't have a pic of the percentages for the high settings, I never thought to do that.
What concerns me the most is this: even with the lowest settings, I'm only getting 2 hours screen time. (last pic)
What's interesting is that you would think that if I'm getting such poor screen time, there would be something else using a lot of battery, but there isn't. This led me to believe the problem was with the battery. I discovered a pretty big scratch on my screen the other day, and I have some monthly insurance plan from best buy, so I was thinking of just getting a new one. The longer I wait to get a new one, the harder it will be to set up everything again. lol
I noticed that compared to other GN2s, mine seems to wake up a lot when the screen isn't on. The awake periods tend to correspond with drops in battery and also when I have a poor signal. Could this be caused by my phone trying to look for signal and using battery?
Yes poor signal that results in the phone searching for better 3g/2g will drain the batteey faster.
Can you try using it in airplane mode with wifi only for a day and see how that goes?
Also install Better Battery Stats and after a day or so of normal usage check your partial unlocks to see if a rogue app is preventing deep sleep and sucking your juice.
Sent from my Nexus One using xda app-developers app
Yeah it us definitely your signal playing a role. Also you have a lot of wakelocks showing up
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
Dude you have major wakelocks that eat up 80 % of your battery!
Go to application manager and remove all the apps you don't use.
K, I agree with my week signal using battery. I only have 75 apps on my phone and they're all pretty mainstream, no obscure apps. Right now im in school with 86% battery, I'm turning on airplane mode now. I have noticed however that when I clear my ram it closes like 50-60 processes each time. I am always closing my apps, but 50 seems extremely high. im gonna turn on airplane mode and see how that goes...
thanks!
Yes, you do have poor signal but that's not all. You have terrible wakelocks pal. Install BBS and monitor which apps are the culprit. It's not about 75 apps, even 2 or 3 bad apps, which have hidden advertisement going on could suck your battery flat in no time.
So first thing, install BBS. 2h screen on time is horrible!
Btw- If you're on 3G, try to switch to 2G. Difference will be unthinkable.
Sent from my GT-N7100
Thanks everyone! I'm really loaded with school work, so I don't have a lot of time right now. But long story short, airplane mode saves my battery like crazy. I started school with 86%, turned on airplane mode, and I'm at 79% right now! more later
Is it safe to say I fixed it?
3h screen over 2 days isnt bad right? Perhaps just a bit worse than what others are getting?

Severe battery drain - Juice Defender problem?

My wife and I have this phone. A few weeks ago I installed Juice Defender (free) on mine and so far it's working remarkably well. Last night I installed it on my wife's phone and the battery level dropped precipitously. She wasn't using the phone much (if at all) and eventually plugged it in to charge it up. After fully charging, the phone wasn't used - overnight it just sat on the kitchen counter and the battery went from 100% to 17%. Never had this problem with my phone and can't figure out what the deal is. Does Juice Defender have a weird reaction under certain settings or installed apps that I don't know about?

I installed it one of the first days I got my LGOG, before it was rooted or unlocked and it killed my battery. I went through everything within the app and couldn't figure it out at all. Next step would be to contact the dev to see if he has any ideas.
Why not just use the builtin methods to save your battery?
Assimilated using the interface that interacts with the advanced internet.
I think I'm getting decent battery life with juice defender on
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda app-developers app
Man listen you do not need addon software to save your battery. It's useless! You do not need any software or app to save battery life! It's like me using pc with norton protection LOL. Turn your sync off.
I've been using jd since the day I got my phone... No battery drain problems. I have my settings on a semi frequent sync schedule (30mins) and can get about 1.5-2 days if I let the battery get close to 0. Check your settings... Both in jd and not.
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda app-developers app
I never partook in using these seemingly useless apps. From what I have seen over the years, these apps cannot really differentiate what processes need to run for system stability versus what is just eating up RAM and metaphorically killing the battery. I have never had success using battery saving or task managing apps, as they eventually always proved counterintuitive.
Want better battery life? Turn on Eco mode; lower your screen display; keep Wifi, NFC, and bluetooth off when not in use; and turn your vibration completely off.
JD does bring a few features you can't find in the native settings - I use it mostly to lower the screen brightness below the lowest built in setting for usage at night, as well as to quickly turn on data when I turn the screen on, and intelligently choose which type of data to connect to.
I think the main value is that I can get the best performance out of my phone (all cores, bluetooth constantly on so it connects instantly in the car, nfc on demand) when I am using it, and battery savings when I'm not. It's a very powerful tool, as long as you know how to configure it! It takes some tweaking but it's worth it.
That said, I'd contact the developers to see if you can send them some kind of log file to see what could be going on with the battery drain... They might be able to help, though JD seems to be out of active development.

Galaxy Nexus Horrible battery

hi guys,
sorry i'm noob and this is second time im posting on xda forum. I recently bought a Galaxy Nexus Made in korea by samsung. It's currently running on 4.3 latest update phone doesn't lagg or nothing happend like crashes etc but please see below major problems im facing.
Phone getting hotter from back side where camera is installed
0 to 100% it take 5-7 hours to charge ( I tried both wall and USB)
I charged the phone to 100% in night and i didn't use the phone night in morning when i check the phone the batter was at only 12% left. the phone eat all the battery in 7 hours the most battery was used by phone idle 57% and stand by 33% & i didn't put any sim card in the phone whole night and automatic wifi was on which was only 17% battery.
again i charged the phone to 100% close the automatic wifi and insert a sim card
The result is like
After 3 hours 57 mins battery was at 52%
Screen take 49% total screen on time 16m 1s
Phone Idle 22% 3h 41m 29s
cell stand by 10% 3h 54m 55s
Android system 5% (CPU TOTAL 1m 47s *** CPU foreground 33s *** Keep awake 1m 19s)
I don't know what was the battery time before 4.3 update becuz when i buy this set it came with 4.3 and i bought this 3 days ago. Is this a battery problem or the phone problem or its the android ???? any type of help is welcome
Thanks in advance
The Galaxy Nexus is known for its not so great battery. It also just depends on how you use it. If you are playing games, watching videos, etc. it will drain fast. If you just check a few things here and there, it will last longer. That's common sense. But yes, compared to other phones, the Galaxy Nexus sucks with battery. Theres not much you can really do software wise. The best thing you can do is get a bigger battery or a spare battery. I have a charger pretty much wherever I am so battery isnt an issue for me. But if you are someone who is on the move all day, I would suggest a spare or an extended battery.
EDIT: Actually, looking at your screen time, you are getting a bit above average on phone idle. Right now, my phone idle is at 8%

Yes i read that and i planned to get extended battery but the cell eating the battery while screen is off. I'm just confused about the OS 4.3 i read alot about that after updating to 4.3 nexus 7 user experiencing of slow charging and battery draining but as you seen in attached pic the phone eating battery without any usage the total on screen time is 6 min and in 3hrs 57 min 48% battery gone ?? so in your opinion what is the prob is it OS, phone or the battery ?

Well I see in your screenshots that it looks like you don't have any cell service. What could be happening is that your phone is constantly searching for a connection, which could eat up a lot of battery.
best bet

youre best bet if rooted and unlocked is to install a custon kernel and underclock it to about 1000 mhz ... install dark themed apps or theme chooser theme also us a black wallpaper .. turn off 4g . ... turn off nfc when not in use .. make sure youre using the oem charger to charge the battery .. use wifi whenever possible .. also turn off anything like hotword detection that is constantly listening

The mobile service was on but data service was disable i received 2 calls and some texts msgs 2 but they are not long or didn't took the battery. All syncs were off and location to. But the battery is going down very badly. Please see new attached files of last night. The cell was at 87% battery and in the morning the battery was dead.
Try using something like Better Battery Stats or GSAM and see what they say is draining your battery.
With the current info given, I would lean toward thinking it is a hardware issue. Perhaps your battery doesn't properly hold a charge anymore.

Few hours ago i left for office the cell was on 14% charging and turn-off the cell and put it in pocket. After 1 hour when i reach to office i was trying to turn on the cell but the battery was dead and then i put it on charging and it start from 6% and turned on. I think the battery is not holding charging . The battery is in made in Korea and have NFC details on it. I think its the original battery but its not use able any more. i will try above mentioned widgets before changing the battery.

didn't use the phone and it ate all battery. Any guesses what's wrong with the phone???

Try updating the radios (I don't remember how to do it. U dial #something). Also, have gps and 4g turned off. Auto brightness turned on. If u have the Facebook app, get rid of it and just use the mobile site.

4g/3g are off and i ticked use only 2G network. Facebook app is deleted brightness is set to auto GPS every thing is off but mobile consuming battery without any usage.... im just confuse about that its the hardware prob or i have to flash some other rom?
bump! any 1 with solution ?
U really need to get better battery stats. It will tell u specifically what wake locks r causing the problem. Idk if using only 2g is a good idea, u may be burning battery with apps constantly searching for a data connection. Can u access wifi? That takes up less battery than data (3g or 4g). U may want to buy a new battery, they aren't that expensive. U can get one on amazon for like $15. If that doesn't work, I'd try flashing a different rom, maybe even a custom kernel.
I am still running 4.1.2 because I like it better than the newer versions and my battery life isn't bad. I usually get close to 2.5hrs of screen on time. More than a day of standby. Obviously, if I make a lot of calls I will get less battery life. I'm running eclipse rom with leankernel.

Today i flashed Cyanogen mode 10.1.3. i didnt flashed any google apps just to check what eat battery. When i flashed the ROM the battery was at 36%. I used the mobile for almost 1 hour and on screen time was 54min 37sec and battery left 16%. The cell eat total 20% battery in 1 hour continues on without mobile data network and 2G was on. Wifi GPS every thing was off and brightness was set to auto. At 16% battery i stop using mobile and after 30 mins i check mobile it eat 6% battery in 30 min without any usage. then i truns off the phone and after 30 mins i tried to turn on the cell the battery was dead. then i plugged in the charger and i turn the cell on. The battery charge start from 10% but instead of charging i start loosing battery. then i charged for almost 1 hour on 0% battery and took 5 hours to fully charged. My cell phone drain all battery over night under the usage of phone idle 73%. I'm just confuse about that its the battery issue or its cell phone problem. and my phone getting very hot from back left side. I just need a good developer advise if this is hardware issue then i'm gonna replace the cell phone and if its the battery issue and hardware is ok then i will get a new battery and continue using and 1 more thing my phone get little hot even its turned off from back left side and sim jacket side.
Bump! any suggestion ?
I doubt a developer can answer that question. Could be phone, could be battery. I would try a, new battery just cuz it's cheaper than a new phone. Maybe go back to stock and see if that helps. If not, call Verizon and complain, they may send u a refurbished unit.
