Today, Canonical announced the Ubuntu Phone OS, which will, in the near future, will be installable on current Android devices, starting with the Galaxy Nexus I believe. Is it just me, or cam anyone else not wait for this?!
For those of you who haven't seen it yet, here's the link: www.ubuntu.com/devices/phone

Awesome the more options the merrier!
It looks pretty slick. Options are always better. Would love for our devs to be able to cook some of those features in android. Open source ftw!
I can't wait!

Exciting news
Wait I don't fully understand, will it be on new devices or can we get it on devices that we already own?
Man the possibilities with having a real desktop computer in your hands and being able to run desktop applications right off the phone and not the slimmed down apps we download from google play. Looks great too.

Its already installable by computer. And phone/tablet but not the version that morphs like the one they are displaying.

I know it's already installable on computer, I used Ubuntu up until unity. You didn't have to correct me on that one;I was clarifying.

Besides Ubuntu was always modified, by developers to be compatible with phones and tablets.

I wonder if they'll make it for tablets soon too. Eventhough the tablet I have has ubuntu ported already, but not for mobile. Just the plane desktop OS.
I second the dual booting idea! The Ubuntu phone looks awesome just like the Ubuntu Desktop looks awesome. But I can't help but think that like the Ubuntu desktop the phone will have a huge applications gaps to over come.
This looks interesting but when would the first alpha roms would show up? I kind of think they havent even open sourced it like open webos

Is it do-able? I know that things like the GNex, and an evo have gotten some of the open source versions of it, so why not us? How hard could it be?

Well, it all comes down to the willingness of a developer if he/she wants to port it or not. If you question the availability of porting webos, then you try porting it then.
Another option would be good, but at this point, why? With ics stable and jb stable around the corner, it really doesnt make sense for a dev to port it. Webos lacks alot compared to android.

The developers always love challenges. They might port it if it is interesting enough. I think the matter is whether we have the good enough developers, who use S2.

I think our developers are good enough to do it its just we don't have a lot of them compared to other phones. The more there are the better the odds are of something like that happening.. We are still better off than other phone models!

I been looking online for a webos launcher or a good theme thats not for cm9. But no luck, also there is a webos theme for gb miui not miuiv4 for some reasons gb miui themes are not compatible with miui v4. sure wish there could be a easy way of converting gb themes work on ics miui rom. Seems like Gb was more popular on themes than ics
I've been doing some looking... it honestly doesn't look so difficult.

Also can someone link me to the iOS 6 port for this phone! Not seeing it in search and my common sense seems to be malfunctioning

If such a ROM ever did come into existence it wouldn't be a true windows rom but rather one based on a windows theme, which quite frankly can already be done on our phones based on themed launchers and particular apps which give it that Windows "feel".
Install EL29, Install Blazer's 4.1 ROM, Download Launcher 7, Run it. There you go
You will probably need FOTAkill.apk or Something to kill ota updates, I did.
I say EL29 because when I ran Launch 7 on ICS, it just didn't work right. And Blazer's kills off the Bloatware, Caulkin's does the same too. You can just run Launcher 7 if you feel so inclined without any of the hoopla.
isnt there a windows 8 launcher now? lol

It's not impossible. Just extremely improbable. Windows 8 and iOS are closed OS' and if ANY person ports it to a completely different platform that person would get sued into oblivion.

In theory it should be possible. We are using an ARM-powered phones and so does Microsoft/Nokia. However, we will need drivers for our hardware, such as graphics, and Microsoft won't give you those. The very helpful community here needs kernel source code to write them for you and that means Microsoft has to give you kernel source code. Do you begin to see the problem?
And then, after all that, your phone does not exist in a vacuum, no, it uses services provided by Microsoft, and you have an unauthorized device consuming them. I imagine they would respond the same way as when people tried to mod their XBOXes. You will be left with a perfectly functional useless phone.
Argument is the same for running iOS on our phones: possible, but very difficult and ultimately pointless.
Wait a few months and you will be able to run Ubuntu on your phone. Maybe.

HD2 was unique in that it was a windows phone that shared the exact hardware specifications of an existing android phone. Therefore, drivers, binaries and such didn't have to be created from scratch in order to port the os.

Im sure it can be ported. I saw the video that was on the ubuntu website that says it runs with all the same drivers android uses. So I am preety confident that our devs here on xda can build a ubuntu rom with no hassle at all. I personally would love to see a change on my galaxy note 2. it wont be just flashing a rom through recovery
youll need to use some program to flash ubuntu on the nexus phones

considering the Exynos seems to be notorious as being one of the more difficult SOC's to developer for I doubt we'll see a well running version of Ubuntu right away. I would like to see it though, and look forward to flashing it on my Nexus.

It's a nice idea and all, but this will likely never happen. With a ton of work you MIGHT be able to get a proof of concept that merely boots, but has zero functionality. We would need proprietary LG drivers (as well as a way to either change them to run on the S3 or rewrite them from the ground up), frameworks and someone who knows both Samsung and LG code inside and out to even have an extremely small chance of this happening.
