Purchase this:

Or root and use wireless tether found here:

Both work fine and you shouldn't be charged.

[Q] Verizon Wireless Wifi Tether

of course verizon is blocking Free wifi tethering, but when for example CM9 comes out, will wifi tethering be free?? Like Native wifi tether now the Apps.
Pumped for tomarrow Nexus day
I've been searching relentlessly for a way to get Wireless Tether for Root Users to work on my brand new VZW Galaxy Nexus.
No dice. The Dev has been notified.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=1257
If you install the latest BETA version and select the Samsung Galaxy S2 under device profiles, it ALMOST works, throughs in error in the log: "Activating WiFi interface.... FAILED"
Totally crushed about this. Not sure if it's happening due to a VZW side safeguard or if it's simply a progrmaming issue the dev can fix :\
Really hope he can fix it easily
I am starting to think VZW has something under the hood preventing ANY of the wireless tethering apps to work. Either I'm wrong or we have to wait for a cooked rom without VZW garbage.
Try running version 2.0.2 wifi tether works on my thunderbolt whereas built in didn't and neither did any newer versions.
we need to find where the provisioning check is.. i found it on the droid razr. been looking on the GN.. cant find it.. im using sqlite, btw..

Pdanet for tablet will bybass the bluetooth tether app built into the phone. The native bluetooth tether is also pulling the verizon subscription.

I wouldn't be surprised if the stock Wireless Tether app communicates with Verizon directly. It seems like it takes a little too long if it was just checking a file on the phone.
The wifitether guy is apparently working on a fix.

Of course it is talking to verizon, it has the auth check enabled, just like every other verizon phone. What we need to find is a way to disable the check. Sadly I don't think it as easy as a setting to be found in SQLlite. I am thinking maybe comparing the tethering part of the code between the GSM and the CDMA versions.
Don't mean to rub it in guys, but that's exactly why I got stock unlocked GSM version on T-MO rather than evil Verizon garbage.
My laptop hooked up to my t-mo GNex is pulling 8mbit
Once custom ROM builds and custom kernels come out shouldn't this not matter?

Oops I accidentally thanked you for this post.
Now let me rub this in. I get over 10 Mbps download speeds on 4G LTE. We will find a workaround for the lack of tethering eventually.

So charge the phone. You're tethering; you've probably got a laptop or something you can charge it from. It might not actually charge it, but it'll slow down the drain.

Wi-Fi Teather for CM7.2?

Searched and still didn't find it. Sorry if it is out there. Is there something lurking about to allow wi-fi teathering on the DINK using CM7.2? would be nice to use it for my laptop when I'm away from the house.
Isn't it @
menu>settings>Wireless&network>Tethering & portable hotspot?
Ah it is in menu>settings but farther down the list. Tethering & portable hotspot. Thanks! Didn't even realize that was even there!!!!!
Edit: Reading the info from the help section there, I wonder if the hotspot part could still incur charges from Verizon if I use that feature. My understanding was that the wi-fi tethering was different that the hotsopt feature. Does anyone have any information?

If you are running CM7 you wont incur any extra charges from Verizon, ive been using mine for over a year.
Hope you're right. The wife will kill me if I use it and Verizon charges us for using it.

+1 i also have been using it for ever and not one extra charge. to my knowledge. 3g tether is undetectable dude to how the network see's the data coming in and out as a whole.
hell you can even edit your cdma settings if you are on a stock rom to use narrative tethering.
How do you do that syn?

New VZW Gnexus coming tomorrow - How do I get Wireless Tether working?

Hi,
I am currently a sprint user who loves his Epic Touch 4G but hates the crappy sprint service. I am rooted on the E4GT & am looking to root the Galaxy Nexus & get wireless tethering working ASAP.
What would be my best steps to get rooted & tethering?
Thanks,
Rich
1.) Unlock bootloader and root through ADB/Fastboot or the GNex toolkit stickied in the development forum.
2.) Install a custom rom and go to Settings --> Wireless and Networks More --> Tethering and Portable Hotspot --> Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot (Checked). Wireless tethering is native to the GNex (maybe ICS as a whole?)
I use an app called FoxFi ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.foxfi ).
Doesn't require you to be rooted, and works perfectly.

I use the wifi tether from stock and it works awesome. I love the fact that the phone get's seen as a rooter instead of an ad-hoc device) just try it from "settings > network options > tether" before rooting.
I would personaly recomend you to keep it stock for at least 2 weeks. When problems arise you can send your phone back without worrying over warranty and stuff. When you see no problems after the first few weeks you can start hacking and unlocking stuff knowing that most things that go wrong beyond that point are your own misstakes and not production problems.

Well your experience on GSM is different from his on LTE. Verizon likes to crack down and force you to pay for tethering.
Is there a Verizon stock 'rooted' rom? I am rooted & using AOKP milestone 4 & am finding things are a little buggy. It might be the phone, it might be the rom. I wouldnt mind trying stock VZW as long a I am rooted - maybe minus some bloat would be good.
What inspired me to switch carriers is that I am moving to a bad service area (cell) and my sprint epic touch 4g has only 1 bar & terrible data service. The surprising thing is that a number of times through the day the sprint phone had data while the verizon phone didnt.
Overall service wise I was expecting it to be fairly good like my wifes Iphone (VZW) but its about on par with my sprint phone. A number of spots I had data on the sprint phone but not the nexus. Strange indeed.

[Q] Qpair

Can anyone confirm that Qpair will work with the Verizon G2? I'm using CleanROM on my G2 and just picked up the G Pad 8.3 so that my G2 can be in my pocket on my train and just use this tablet to get texts/phone calls without having 2 devices in my hands. I've seen different posts that say it works with it and some that says it's borked due to VZ. If not, may decide to cancel order or return. Any feedback would be great.

Toggling data tethering via qpair is borked due to VZW, even if you have a plan that includes tethering.

I was considering snagging a Gpad today since BestBuy has it on sale for $280, but not if I cannot tether it off of my rooted stock Verizon G2. Does normal tethering work on it, just not Qpair tehering?
Thanks for your help!

Well, normal tethering using ad hoc wifi works fine. I would guess that Bluetooth tethering works too, but I haven't tried it.
Remember, when you tether a device, it's the phone with mobile data that does the work. The device that you're tethering, in this case the G Pad, is just connecting via wifi as usual.

Any tethering you can enable on the G2 should work fine. You just won't be able to remotely enable tethering via qpair.

Are you able to tether on all of these phones without using Qpair?. What happens if you set up to tether the G Pad to the phone and then run Qpair?

I can use q pair on all these with no problem just no internet connection through q pair. My verizon g2 is rooted with the hotspot provisioning skipped. This is what i use for internet.

Rooting Samsung Galaxy s3 sch-L710 for tethering

I have Sprint service and was told that they're very strict on Wi-Fi tethering so I wanted to know if I got my phone rooted and used it as a hotspot for my Xbox 360 and laptop will Sprint know and try to charge me? Will the root turn it into a mobile hotspot?

Most custom roms have the native hotspot hacked. As far as Sprint seeing, I've never heard of it.

if you are willing to spend money, foxfi works fine too
I've been using it for almost a year now
Sprint knows when they see an excessive amount of data being used. They can't do anything about it unless you specify that your device is rooted.(Modified)
They do have specific tricks for customers with high data use. They disable the main tower where most of your data traffic comes from, but leave surrounding towers alone. That one tower will have LTE slowed but 3G will be at regular capacity. It's only done for about 2 to 3 weeks and then enabled again.
Basically, it's spot checking.
They've done it to me on 3 different occasions in 3 different areas across town. And I always check to see if it's the case by going to the next nearest tower and doing speed tests in the area.
(Just try to stay under 50GB and you'll be okay).
