Yep, yet another GPS issue.
I flashed a few JB roms with correct modems and all was well (had good GPS lock). Went back to ICS for the batti life. Flashed a new ICS modem, and ROM - no GPS lock. Flashed multiple ICS modems - no GPS lock. Used multiple "GPS fix" recommendations from XDA - no GPS lock. Flashed multiple ICS roms - no GPS lock. Flashed stock FF18 - no GPS lock with stock. Flashed stock FI27 - no GPS lock
Just wondering if it has something to do with going from JB than back to ICS??? or if anyone else has had issues coming from JB to ICS too?
I'm in the same boat and have really been working on this for a couple of weeks too. I've also tried every application and .conf mod there is. Tried going back to an ICS ROM too and got the same thing - no GPS except in Google maps.
What happens for me is that I can get what appears to be a good lock (ONLY with Google Maps and NOT any other of the 6 applications I've tried!) but then after some time I get the 'searching for GPS location' thingy. To stop this I have to long press on that notification/App Info then force close the UI. And of course loose my wallpaper. OR simply reboot.
It sucks 'cause' up till this point I"ve never really had any issues at all.
I'm going to make one last attempt over the next few days. Going to PC Odin EL29 stock rooted check GPS. Then PC Odin Stock FF18 again check GPS. Then PC Odin FL16 and check there too.
I suspect it has something to do with the /preload and partition changes with JB. I do know that TD just put up a new FormatAllX2 he's created for JB ROMs. That may help for tose of us moving between ROMs. I'll check that out first.
But I don't know yet.
Really don't like having to spend the whole day, or more restoring all my settings and stuff but I guess it's necessary now that I can't reliably use my navigation on which I actually depend.
Hopefully someone with way more knowledge can jump in.

Honestly I think it is something hardware related. I used to have a SGS1 and it had the same flaky GPS. Some fixes would work, most wouldn't but if they did they didn't last long and it would be back to the drawing board.

Tried the new JB format allx2----no luck
and i agree, may have something to do with the preload...have not tried going back to JB yet to see if GPS locks there...may try tonight
Full flash of JB with modem... No lock there now... Damn!
I've read that it's a hardware issue on a previous post. It's tough getting a GPS lock from JB to ICS. As well as ICS to ICS. Or JB to JB.
The only solution to this for me was Mobile Odin Kernel Flash EL26 safe recovery. While in recovery wipe cache x3s, wipe dalvik x3s, format user data x3s.
Then flash whatever you are looking for. Immediately open Maps. With 3G and GPS ON. Locate and lock.
Or simply get a nandroid of a working EL26 GB ROM and flash it before you flash the ROM you want even if it's a nan(GB)droid to nan(JB)droid.

Me too.
Going to have to wait on the full EL26 till later this week. Or hopefully FL27 will drop and I'll try that.

I had the same issue. I had a nandroid backup of the prerooted stock EI22 and reverted back to it. My wifi connection has been rock solid since.
I am suspecting it's due to this new "gps fix" that's floating around, or something in the nubernel kernel since I didn't start having the issue until after I installed that kernel and gps fix (did both at the same time) yesterday.
Are you guys both running custom kernels or did you install that gps fix zip? I never had this problem in ACS 1.2, even when running custom kernels (twilight, genocide, etc.).
So to reiterate, right now I'm on the prerooted EI22 with EI22 modem. No other zips applied.
Edit: I turned my gps on and forgot about it for a few minutes. My phone suddenly rebooted! I'm going to reapply the gps fix and see if that causes the wifi issue again.

Well, I reapplied the gps fix zip and the wifi hasn't had any problems for the past 20 minutes.

I was getting the wifi/data issue on all of the ROMS, until ERA V3.1. So far this ROM is the most stable as of yet. I anticipate a LOT of flashing coming up over the next few weeks. VERY excited and impressed with all of the improvments in this short amount of time!!
The only thing I've done to "fix" the wifi problem was restore from nandroid.
I think I'll be happy to get rid of this phone at upgrade time. It's always one problem or another.
Edit: I reflashed the nubernel kernel and the wifi problem came back. I even rebooted a few times to make sure. Then I reflashed the nandroid backup and the problem went away.
I have wifi working, but the signal is weak that's for sure. My bigger problem is constantly losing screen responsiveness! My screen will just randomly not respond to my touches. I have to turn off the screen for a minute and turn it back on then MAYBE it will work. Not happy thats for sure.
BTW I'm using the same one as you guys, pre-rooted EI22

My phone has always done that on Froyo, no matter which ROM I was using (though I never used the stock Froyo ROM). Also did it on every Gingerbread rom. I don't know if the digitizer was going bad or what.
Kinda glad to be rid of it - nice phone, but like exspecto said, always something.
I'm have the wi-fi/3g issue as well it runs fine when I'm at home but it flakes out at work. I thought it was an app I was running but now I see that others are having the issue as well. I'm gonna try ERA today to see if it happens again.

so i ended up flashing another kernel over numbernels and it fixed my issue ... i think the one i flashed was ics overclock to 1.2
I have seen a variety of posts in various threads about people not being able to get GPS connections and blaming the ROM they were on the for the problem - I imagine that sometimes that could be the reason but something happened to me recently that makes me wonder...
I am a flashaholic - often going back and forth between various ROMS via Nandroid back ups - all was good - then recently I noticed my GPS wasn't working. I thouht it was the rom - but no matter what I did I could not fix it. I tried installing other roms - totally clean install - I tried flashing back to rooted stock and no matter what I tried, GPS did not work.
I don't know where I saw it, but I finally saw a post from someone who suggested fixing it by going back to stock via odin - I tried that and it didnt work either - digging a little deeper someone suggested using odin to going back to pure stock then go into settings and do a factory restore.
I tried it - and it worked - took me virtually all day to figure it out - but it is working better than ever now - I wish I knew what caused it in the first place - but at least I found a somewhat reasonable solution.
If you have lost your GPS and can't get it working again - give it a shot -
Does anyone else have any other suggestiions that might work?
This is correct. I had this exact same issue and this worked for me as well.

Do you know why it happend in the first place? Was it the result of a specific Rom or just flashing in general?
Thats what i found that worked for me too. It only worked after i went into settings and reset the phone after odin.

I recently lost my GPS after flashing a Sprint-based ROM. Unfortunately, ODIN back to stock and factory reset from the Settings menu (and from recovery) did not bring back my GPS.
However, I followed a suggestion from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1923067
I used ODIN to go back to a rooted stock ROM, installed CWM, installed the Sprint-based ROM that seemed to have been the source of the trouble. My GPS started working again. I then used CWM to restore a stock nandroid backup I had from earlier and GPS continued to work thereafter in any ROM I flashed.
There may be a simpler process, but that's what worked for me.

Now that I thnk of it, I also had flashed a Sprint Based rom - that must have triggered my original issue - I explained what I did to restore my GPS at the start of this thread _ and it is similar to what you described - execept I did not odin to a SPRINT rom - I used ODIN to bak to pure stock - then did a factory restore - (and this second step is what seemed to do the trick) then I re-rooted and went backto my happy days of flashing roms - I haven't had an issue since.

It definitely seems to be a common element to most of these GPS issues. I'm not sure why, in some cases, all it takes is a factory reset in stock to fix it, while others have to re-install the Sprint ROM first. Either way, though, it seems like in most cases, it's user-fixable.
Got the GPS death syndrome today. Flashed a ton of stock ICS nandroid backups without any luck. Finally fixed it after flashing a Sprint JB ROM nandroid then back to ICS. Such a werid issue.

I have the same issue. Now to flash a stock rom using Odin, do you have to use the toolkit? Also where can I download a Rogers stock rom from?

If your problem started after installing a Sprint-based ROM, then root your phone, install CWM and then install that same Sprint ROM. Your GPS will probably work after that. You can then restore a Nandroid backup of another ROM. That's how a lot of us were able to fix our GPS.

Yesterday my gps wasnt working at all. It would not lock on no matter what I did. I was on a custom rom and I tried wiping my data/cache, reinstalling maps (just for giggles), and a multitude apps from the market that help deal with gps problems (gps fix, gps status, toolbox, etc).
When all this didn't work I decided to odin back to the last official JB update and still no gps. On a whim I decided to odin back to an ICS firmware and that made my gps work. I have no idea but it did. I then odin to UVDLJC, installed TWRP's most recent and restored my backup of the custom rom I was using in the first place and gps now worked.
While I'm happy as heck that my gps is now working and that it was not a hardware issue I'm extremely curious what happened.
I have flashed many roms lately and I cannot think what a custom rom can do to gps to hose it or if it was just one of those things. I would of thought that when I originally did an odin to UVDLJC that would fix the issue but that didn't. Whatever the flash to ICS did fixed it but what in the heck could that of been?
I figure if I can find out or get an idea what happened then I can steer away from flashing certain roms, or just be prepared that flashing any roms at all can make this happen again.
Same here.
Hello, ddcoh.
I am currently having the same issue you had with GPS not working. I've tried everything from trying tedious Play store apps to trying many different roms and kernels (clean installing every time) to completely reverting back to stock including using TriangleAway in case that did any help. Nothing worked. I have been thinking about going back to ICS to see if that worked but the last time I tried to downgrade from 4.1.1 to 4.0.4 I ended up soft bricking my phone even though I followed the steps word for word.
Can you tell how you went about downgrading to ICS and then back to JB, please? I use my GPS a lot and I would hate to find out it's a hardware issue.
Typically, it's been when people are going from 4.2 to 4.1.

Well I used odin to flash an T999_UVALEM which was a prerooted ICS rom. After booting it up I checked to see if GPS was working and it was.
I then used odin again to flash T999_UVDLJA which is a JB rom and booted it up also and saw that gps was working. Then I just restored a backup of a room I had been using and GPS still worked.
I've been out of town and noticed that after flashing a few roms that gps wasn't working so instead of doing all the above stuff I just flashed a cm10 rom. I believe I either used a cm10 nightly (or maybe 10.1, memory is hazy) or LiquidRom and that got the GPS working by just doing that. Not sure if that will work for you but you could always backup your setup using TWRP's latest and then flashing a cm10 rom and seeing if gps is working and if that fixes it then you could then just reboot and restore the rom you are currently on and that might fix your gps for you.

You were running CM11 with an LK3 modem? I read other posts where people were having problems getting data with the 4.1 modem and CM11.
No I was running cm11 but went to stock last night. Im on 4.1 with lk3 modem and it cannot locate me or track.

I thought the latest version of CM11 required the latest bootloader and modem.

Have you tried an app like GPS status to reset and re-download GPS data. I've had that fix issues in the past for me. Also I've heard the screws on the back of the phone may get loose and negatively affect the GPS so you could try tightening them(gently).
Yup I tried a couple programs and nothing pics up a gps signal whether outside or in a car.
Is the gps linked to the modem?
This should solve any GPS issues.
