4.2.1 vs 4.1 - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

for a general user like myself what are users opinions on performance an battery on a custom 4.2.1 toro rom vs the 4.1.1 factory image?(im kinda tired of flashing stuff!im turning into a crackflasher lol jus wana hear sum views on the topic)thinking of going stock rooted wit maybee jus a kernel?

I've been using muzzy's 4.2 rom for quite some time. His ROM is very close to stock and gets very nice battery life... best I've gotten since I left stock ICS a year ago. It may just be subjective but I think 4.2 is quicker and smoother than 4.1 also. My 2 cents.

Should I update to ICS?

I've heard it has a lot of glitches so i'm really skeptical about updating. I care a mostly about battery life and performance. Are those two effected a lot? Is worth it? I don't plan to root, just stay on stock.
can someone please reply with the pros and cons?
Personally i would flash thederekjays evolution 3 v7. Experiences vary, but i had bad luck on 5-6 ics roms including 100% stock. Evo3 v7 is so far a bit faster and just as stable as GB. Plus, the bennies of ics (Google ics vs gingerbread if you want all the city details).
But as i said experiences vary.

Worth the plunge....I say do it...you won't look back.... Gb is old news. Why would a new version of an OS be worse than it's predecessor?

I didn't notice any difference in battery life vs gb and the upgrade made my phone run better IMHO. I just couldn't stand touchwiz anymore and opted for aokp. Besides, keeping gb when there's an available upgrade it like running windows 3.1 on you computer...... why would you do such a thing

If you are happy about GB, stay with GB.
Once you go ICS, you can't go back... since you dont want to root.
It's probably the same honestly. No one is going to give you a stock gb vs stock ICS because no one cares about reviewing stock ICS. It is what it is.
2 weeks ago I would've said stick with GB, but then I tried ICS/CM9 & I absolutely love it. My battery life has improved drastically & it's more stable than the GB rom I was on before. Now that the ICS kernels are out, things will only keep getting better. I can't really think of any cons, aside from a slight learning curve due to some menu items being rearranged.
Why don't you want to root? By rooting you can try out ICS without being stuck with it if you don't like it.
i sold my phone couple of day before the ics update was released but i heard many ppl report that the stock ics was alot faster and better that gb. but in the end you will have to flash and try it for yourself to see if you prefer ics or gb
ICS
ICS is the way to go....Always go with the latest and greatest when OS' are concerned. ICS has been out long enough for Google to iron out any kinks. I would also go with Darkside Evo3v7. TDJ's new Venom kernel is incredible and being about to OC to 1785mhz is a bonus. I usually underclock for battery life. ENJOY
If you go stock, I recommend you wipe it before you flash it. I didn't the first time and had lag issues, to the point that I was regretting updating. I have since wiped, and used Odin to put on the stock Tmo ics and am happier.

Is it necessary to flash bootloader and radio also when flashing a custom rom?
Basically thats the only thing holding me back now because im not sure.
I've already unlocked and rooted, just not ready yet for a custom rom
I'm new to the Gnex too, but spent two years trying to get an ancient Galaxy Spica 5700 to run CM7...
Got the Gnex about a week ago, and immediately started looking around here. I chose AndroidME CM10, because it looked good, and in the developement thread no one seemed to have problems, and they said the battery life was very good. I can't remember if it's GSM only though.... Anyway I'm very happy with it, no probs at all, and battery life is good. I see that generally in America all you guys who use Google Now and all that and have different network frequencies complain about battery life, but I don't really use the phone that much, and with this ROM I get a few days with minimal screen use. There are also two other ROMs by the same dev, a modded stock JB and an AOSP JB. I like the look of the new Codename android 3.3.1, but in the dev thread too many people have little problems, and after years of limited functionality on my old phone I just want something stable and nice, to relax for a while. At least until I get bored...
RE baseband, If you look around in the forum (General forum I think,) you'll find a page all about basebands and with packages to flash them all. On my GSM I had to change the baseband, because you can't use the original baseband with JB.
I dunno what modding the Galaxy S was like for you, but based on my past with my Spica I'm loving my first Nexus device, it's all so easy! Good Luck
Thats so easy!!!! Just go for CM10, then change to AOKP, then go all in Paranoid, then just flash Miui and be happy :highfive:

If you've already received the JB OTA, then the bootloader and radio are already up to date. You could always just flash a custom recovery and SU. I've been running rooted stock since I got my phone
Whatever you're first custom ROM is, BAMF Paradigm will be your last, because once you flash BAMF, you won't want/need to flash anything else

Hey, I came from Spica too. That was so buggy and slow despite the attempts by various devs. Used it for 2 yrs. GNex is so much better.
Anyway for the OP. I wanted the stock experience initially. So i am on Android Revolution and stock kernel. Wifi reception is pretty poor. Many have reported that on different ROMS. Will have to try out different kernels or wait till google gives a fix. There are no other issues and battery life is good. But i am getting bored with stock. Might try Xenon HD.
Xenon is a great choice had it till the new MIUI came out. For kernels I have had the best battery life with james bond. Have not tried slim bean yet but I ran slim ics and it was great. I think the rom was only like 50 mb

of course the CM10 nightlies!!

Just Dumped HTC One X + PLUS for S3 - Now What? Custom ROM or wait for Update?

HTC One X PLUS was had poor wifi reception in my home. Wifi Analyzer shows 20 dBm signal drop when you hold phone in your palm. Not with S3. All good now. But miss Sense + Jelly Bean 4.1.1. I know Jelly Bean stock update is probably happening within the next days/weeks for S3?? I'm a Power User but got everything on the HTC with JB to work the way I wanted using Widget Locker and Nova Launcher. HTC stock keyboard much better so Swiftkey 3 wasn't even necessary. Definitely need Swiftkey 3 on this 4.0 Touchwiz phone.
I spent hours and hours learning Android and setting up the HTC. Don't want to spend all weekend again. But also would like to be on 4.1.x. I was an iPhone Jailbreaker so I'm not afraid of rooting and/or custom ROM but I will be very frustrated with bugs or losing useful features just to get a custom ROM. I'm sure this has been asked 100 times but I think I've explained my usage goals enough to get a decent recommendation? I think a main goal if I do go custom ROM is I want the one that is the most established meaning, most likely to still be around as new devices are introduced 1, 2, 3 years from now. I'd prefer to not keep having to learn the quirks of a different ROM, but I'm also not married to Samsung Touchwiz.
a) Stick with ICS and wait for official JB update and just live with it?
b) Install JB 4.1.2 Custom ROM that is closest to stock? Which one?
c) Wait for stable custom ROM that is based on JB 4.2?
If (b) can someone post a link to the "Custom ROM for S3 Newbie Guide" ?
Thanks in advance.
My advice would be to test out some of the popular ROMs around here, such as: CM10, AOKP, AOCP, etc. There are also ROMs based on TouchWiz with rooted features that have been debloated.
I personally have been using Task650 AOKP for a while now. It offers great performance, battery life, customization, and stability. He offers great support and updates.
Ultimately only you can decide which is right for you as they're all slightly different and we all have different needs from our devices.
Read around the development sections and you'll find something to suit your needs in no time.
Task650 AOKP 4.1.2 JB. 11/18 Build
Underwear kernel (Intellidemand/Deadline)
Well after spending at least 25 hours setting up that HTC (much of it was first time using Android Learning Curve and getting Questions answered and app suggestions.) I'm sort of burnt out. I started reading and reading and reading more here and ran across these two threads:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1869300&highlight=grey+7
And although rooting seems like no big deal, it seems there really isn't as far as I can tell a JB ROM that doesn't have at least some issues or lacks some Touchwiz features that may be missed?
I'm leaning toward (a) Wait for official 4.1 update. Should be any day now?

Is there a stable Touchwiz based ROM, debloated, based on JB 4.1 I should consider? I really am not interested in "custom" I'm just interested in as close to stock Touchwiz ROM but just JB instead of ICS. And something that when Official OTA update is out, I can switch to that if desired.

Head over the development section, not original just development and check out the thread started by Drewgaren. I haven't personally tried it as I prefer AOKP, but I've heard it's a nearly perfectly working JB TouchWiz based ROM.

This looks like what I would want. This video seems to confirm:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzJR3I6nLvA
But is there version for I747 and there's no issues?
Does the official OTA update require a reinstall and reconfig of all apps?
After skipping around all 742 pages of the CleanROM thread (geez) sounds like exactly what I want. Problem is, it's for Verizon I535 S3, not the AT&T I747 S3. So what's the closest thing to CleanROM that works for AT&T I747?
I think that Frosty JB and Black jelly ...both are bug free Tmobile ports. Both are stock...or near stock touchwiz. Frosty is straight stock and black jelly has a few mods/ theme ...but they both have been flawless for me. You can find them in the SGH-I747 development section easily. I have tried all the ao•p original ROMs and they all had some form of compromise.
Just my 3¢

[Q] 4.1 vs 4.2 which one is faster (in general)?

Hi community!
Im looking for a blazing fast rom...ive tried xBlack, Aokp, paranoid android, cm10...(4.1.2!)
And im wondering if it pays to upgrade to 4.2+. I dont need the new gimmicks ( lockscreen widgets and so on) but i want a faaaaaast and battery friendly rom for daily use. Theme chooser is necessary if theres no dark version available.
Can you recommend anything?
I tried cataclysm a few weeks ago and Rasbeanjelly...but they didnt really convince me.
Is 4.2 in general slower than 4.1.2?
Regards from austria

In general 4.2 stutters less, but on the 1st touch 4.1 is smoother, if you're looking for custom ROMs, go for the 4.1 based ROMs because the 4.2s are really unbalanced in terms of smoothness

Stock 4.1.2, rooted with faux123 kernel has been good to me
try cm10.1 unofficial ones, personally i would always go for the newest one 4.2.1
I use MMuzzy's 4.2.1 and have no complaints. MODs are available from kmame for the look, there's a nice quick reply stand alone you can bolt on if you want it like me. As close to stock as you'd like or as far from it... I get 15 hours with full bore push email and about a day and a half with pull every 20 minutes....
Let me know if you have any questions.

[Q] Droid incredible 2: What is the best bug free ICS and Sense ROM

Hi all. As you can tell, I'm new here. I'm probably trying to revive a dead device... If I even can, that is.
So, this is how my story starts. My Galaxy 3 was destroyed by a dog. Let's just say my phone became a chew toy. My Galaxy was completely stock. After mourning its dreadful death, I had to revert to old faithful.
Here's the problems: Gingerbread is way too outdated for me. So I downloaded a Sense 3.6 ICS ROM. This ROM is my favorite. But it has this one very nasty flaw; the Wi-Fi and mobile service don't like each other.
Solution: I ask some veterans for the best ICS Sense ROM. I've tried viper... It's good, but way too slow for a daily driver. I tried a Cyanogen(excuse the spelling) Jelly Bean ROM and while fast and smooth, it had too many flaws. Worst of all, no sense!
So my main point... I know it's kinda old to even attempt bringing back up, but I'm a cheap ass, and want the best bang for my buck.
I love the ROM I have now because it's basically stock, but ICS. But the damned service curse! Why?!
Oh, and my last question. Is it possible to use the stock ROM and flash an ICS firmware to it? That is basically what I'm wanting. Sense with ICS, like stock with no bugs.
If anyone ever does trip across this forum and land into this thread... Help a brother out ):
My experience on Verizon (CDMA):
For ICS, either Ascension Oblivion or Viper. I ran both for a while - and added a B-Team kernel to overclock a bit, but kinda went overboard and wasn't satisfied with the battery life. Viper has a ton of customizations, but I found it to be a bit too heavy since I just wanted Verizon stock w/o the bloat.
After these two, I went back to the GB stock, minus the VZ bloat for a while. But now I'm running the latest Beanstalk (4.3?) and am relatively happy with it (with the ringer-fix patch). Granted, it's not Sense, but the only Sense-related feature I was interested in was the clock widget.
