Is it possible that the iphone 5 has better 3g reception than our arc(s)?
This is especially noticeable indoor, my friends iphone 5 can download at 800kbps where my arc has difficulties even connecting with the 3g network on the exact location and time and carrier, so it forces me to download over 2g and even this is slower than average(5 kbps).
Also when in settings i choose (3g(preferred) / 2g) my phone is a lot of the time without signal, so the switch to 2g isn't working that good. Often calls from friends are directed immediately to voicemail. Sometimes when my phones comes out of standby, then it connects to 2g, so the rest of the time it was constantly without signal.... frustrating! That's why I put it most of the time on 2g only.
Yes i've got the correct carrier apn settings. (outdoor my 3g can download @ > 1500kpbs)
same issue on different basebands, first on 77 now on 83, no difference there.
not rom related: first on jj'shybrid now on uhd 2.0.3 (locked BL).
Someone with the same issue?
You know what will be a good solution if the setting would be "2g(preffered) / 3g", so only when mobile data is switched on and a decent 3g connection is found it would switch to 3g and the rest of the time it would stay on 2g. This is probably kernel related, but does custom kernels have this feature?
Thanks
Yes. Lol
IPhone is newer.

iPhone might have stronger antenna than Xperia phones.
ROMs have nothing to do with it. If your phone is rooted, you could try using some 3G improvement tweaks.

Hi,
I'm running my desire with rooted stock rom by oclock (called 3'oclock over at modaco).
Also running a2sd with richardtrip ocv14 kernel, and radio is 32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11.
A lot of incoming calls are not getting through - sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. People are saying it goes to voicemail 2 or 3 times before it come through. I don't see missed calls on my phone when this happens.
This is with mobile internet set to off, so it isn't that.
Anyone else have this issue? And know how to fix?
Thanks.
Is it possible you could try flashing a differnet radio perhaps?
Are you on he boundary of your network's 3G coverage?
I find I often have to set 3G devices to 2G only in my house because the 3G coverage is marginal and the phones spend half their life jumping between HSPA and EDGE, and it often causes missed calls as you describe. Nothing exclusive to the Desire though, the only 3G device that never had a problem here on O2 was my old TyTN, and that was only because the radio on that was too rubbish to pick up a 3G signal at all here

happens on 30, 36 & 37 radios for me.

It happens with my internet set to off though - haven't had mobile internet enabled all day just too see if it was this but it happens when the internet is off.
Your phone will still connect to 3G networks if the data is off. Try changing 'Network Mode' under 'Mobile Networks' to GSM only and see if that helps.

Will give it a go - hope not though cos i like using 3g for emails, surfing etc.
Will also try disabling the "enable always on mobile data" setting to see if that is doing it.
Thanks for the info.
I had exactly the same problem when I used the built in widget to turn OFF mobile data (I had a stock orange ROM in UK). I did this to save battery, but calls did exactly what you said. I now leave it on all the time (and actually battery has improved massively in my 4th week, dunno why, but I went 2 days without charge, and quite reasonable usage!)
Now I leave mobile ON all the time it works no problems, and haven't had the same problems since!
Hey,
I've recently got my DHD. Although i still have that call drops like i had it with my HTC Hero.
At home we have a bad 3G signal. That's why i set my DHD to GSM Auto (PRL).
It still uses 3G and there are no more than 2bars (signal strength). However i also see my DHD on 3G with no bar (signal strength).
Sometimes when i make a call (1 of 5-10Calls) the phone starts on 3g, after some time it hands over to 2g and the call is dropped.
Do you know is the call drop at 3g to 2g handover the providers fault or is it the handset?
My best solution would be to adjust the GSM Auto (PRL)-3G-Treshold , so it would require a better 3G signal and would'nt switch to 3g at home at all. Is this possible?
Another solution would be if i make a call, phone should switch to 2g automatically. Seems more realistic!?
If those ways are not possible i can just use the workaround to use WIFI at home and use "toggle 2g if wifi"
Thanks in advance!
Have you tried to fix it to GSM only without PRL? This is how I've gotten rid of my phonecall dropouts on 3G.

Ya ofc, but the coverage is only bad at home.
That means once i leave home i want to use 3G.
Switching everytime i leave home is no solution.
But thanks anyway!
Can anyone explain how the Arc (or is it generic to android) controls the switch between HSPDA / 3G / GSM etc?
I live right on the edge of a HSPDA / GSM reception area, so sitting in the same chair I'm often browsing using "H", and then slowed down to "G" - and vice-versa. Unfortunately, every time it switches it seems (to me) that there is a lag while it establishes a connection again.
Is their any way to configure the ARC to make it attempt to stay with "H" for a bit longer?
Go to Setting - Wireless & networks - Mobile Networks and change the Network Mode into WCDMA
Hope that help you!

Changing from Edge(E) to Hspda(H) doesnt drop the connection but the from H to E does. Also if the H signal is weak, it will change automatically to E. If you are in a building , parking etc you will have à weak H signal since your phone is covered by the walls

thank you both repliers.
It looks like there's no practical alternative to just letting the switch over happen as Sony have programmed it (or moving house).
You can try forcing to use GSM only or WCDMA only instead of GMS / WCDMA preferred.
The setting is under Wireless --> Mobile network settings --> Network Mode.
By forcing it to use WCDMA, the phone doesn't try to switch to GSM even when it has low signal. Good thing here is that, it doesn't try to switch between the two frequently hence battery might be saved and the bad thing about this is that, when you have a week signal, the phone tries to get better signal since it cannot switch to over to another frequency, hence the boosting uses more battery power.
Try it for yourself .

This is not only happening as programming by Sony but more likely by your operator. The operator defines the parameters that decide when they wish your mobile to switch from one network to the other, how weak they will allow the signal to become etc.
You can contact you operator, maybe they will log a case on it and investigate if the radio planning could be changed in your area.
So here is my grudge as of now with the gnex. When I go from roaming to 3g or airplane to 3g, it takes an unbelievably long time to actually GET the 3g signal. It will show me that I have 3 or 4 bars of service but does not show me the little 3g icon. I am currently running Sourcery 3.2 as my rom and have my mobile network set to CDMA only. Is this a common issue or do I have a possible shotty gnex?
I have a LG G4 H815 Eu on EE, under "Network Mode" it is generally set to 2G/3G/4G Auto, on a call it goes to 3G often 2G, when it drops to 2G I cannot then access the internet at the same time.
I've taken to leaving the setting on 3G only, which works fine and allows both calls and data at the same time, but obviously missing out on 4G.
My only options are 2G/3G/4G Auto..... 2G/3G....... and 3G only
What I really want are 3G/4G, is there any way to get this, I'm without root as of now.
Thanks
Gosh. Please educate yourself about cell networks. Your phone has to drop to 3G when making a call (yet) . There is hardly any 4G network capable of transmitting a call. Yes, the invented, released, published and implemented a cellular standard WITHOUT the possibility to make phone calls. You can eavesdrop on 4G so perfectly it makes the NSA guys jerk off, you can not make a phone call. Isn't it great how the needs of the customers are met? [emoji35]
When you only have 2G then your connection is simply so bad that you just won't have enough bandwidth to make a call and surf at the same time. (How the hell do you do that?)
Your phone should however go back to 4G when the call has ended and 4G is available.

I don't think you read my post correctly.
I can have default 2G/3G/4G Auto but when on a call and it sometimes drops to 2G, data dies so I have to end call to use data.
I've now set it to 3G only and for the last few days it works fine on a call and data at the same time if needed, but obviously no 4G
Only other option is 2G/3G which is useless as 2G is where the problem lies.
I want a 3G/4G option, is this possible?
Are you in weak coverage areas? Your phone should only be dropping if you have weak 3G.

That's the thing, if I set it to Auto it frequently drops to 2G.
Since I've left it solely on 3G the signal hasn't dropped once even using it in the same places when on Auto it dropped to 2G.
I would like a 3G/4G option, any ideas how to get one? Thanks

So I'll ask again, are you in a weak coverage area?
No need to ask again, I've just explained when i lock it to 3G it's perfect, why it drops to 2G when on Auto is anyone's guess
