Uber frustration with PS3 controller. Wired won't show. - Galaxy S III Accessories

I hae simply given up on wireless via mac. So, I got the gameklip and love the idea but when I plug in the controller, and nothing happens. It says it should show up immediately. It doesn't. Says usb connected and that's it. Input method doesn't show a new device. What I am doing or not doing? Stock rooted JB.

Have you used the sixaxis app?

Yes and usb/bt. Neither one will find either controller in wired mode.

Sounds like your missing a huge step. Did you do the whole Mac address thing?
(⊙_⊙)

Are you sure your usb adapter cable is compatible with the s3? Try plugging a usb thumb drive in if its no recognized then its not compatible. Also you dont need the six axis app with this phone since ps3 conroller is natively supported.

Correct but that is my problem. I am using the default cable that came with the gameklip. It connects fine to my camera etc. My PC, just will not show on the phone. I have to believe the cable is just faulty.
As for mac address that should be unnecessary for a wired plug in. I got it connected after driving to my friends house and using a windows machine to change the mac address. I still can not connect it physically but without a second cable to test against, I can't say for sure it is the cable but I do believe it to be so.
Only other problem I have now which I can't seem to find is that the games won't accept long presses. Example, in Silent Hill, R1 is side step, but also holding it draws your weapon but nothing happens.Just side steps. I am trying to research if it is just the game itself or a setting I can somehow manipulate. I have never had an Android and in the last 3 weeks have rooted it, overclocked it, undervolted it and through on all the emulators. Too many awesome things to do at once lol

I used this back in the summer when I was playing MGS on the S3:
Granted, it's the wireless setup, but it just don't follow the whole tutorial to get the wired setup.

I have bought two otg adapters the first didnt work for me and the second one i bought from amazon the reviews said it worked for the s3 that one worked.

Just use sixaxis and change the controllers mac address to the phone. It straight up says on gameklips website that the T-Mobile version isn't compatible with the wired option.
I use the wireless setup and it works perfectly. Stock rooted here.

If you have an USB OTG cable then you don't need to mess around with MAC addresses or anything else, very straightforward to pair the PS3 controllers directly on the phone with Sixaxis Controller if you have a USB OTG cable.

Try and plug a mouse or USB key drive in to the OTG cable to see if it turns up. If it doesn't, the cable is faulty.
I bought an OTG cable on eBay that didn't work. The seller sent another when I reported it faulty (I didn't need to send anything back), and the second one worked fine allowing the PS3 controller to work.

Didn't thought of that, I'll try it out tonight.
If you're just taking the USB cable that came with the tablet, changing it's gender and plugging something into the end, it won't work. The tablet would need to have USB Host support which this tablet does not. I believe that the Samsung USB Adapter that converts directly from the Samsung Connector to USB Female will add USB Host support (USB OTG).
Here is the USB Adapter. http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-tab-accessories/EPL-1PL0BEGSTA

I'm sorry, but you're wrong. Honeycomb 3.1 adds SOFTWARE support for USB Host funtionality. The device has to have HARDWARE support as well. This tablet does not. That is the reason that you need a special adapter that provides USB Host HARDWARE funtionality, such as the one I listed above.

Yes. There's a lot of misinformation in this thread. The tablet DOES have USB Host capability, but it will only enable it when it sees a specific resistor on a particular pin in the dock connector.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1155065 for more details.
To get USB Host, there are two approaches:
1) Make your own cable with the correct resistors
2) Purchase the Samsung USB Host adapter which is now available for around $20.
Note that there are some limitations:
1) Xbox360 controllers and PS3 controllers are not standard HID devices and require kernel support not present in stock kernels. Pershoot's kernel has the necessary modules.
2) PS3 controllers must be fully charged before trying to use them. If not they will try to charge their battery from the tab and cause an overcurrent trip, disabling the port until the USB dongle is disconnected.
Also, Samsung didn't mangle the Bluetooth stack like they do with their phones, so wiimotes work.
Not working for me
Not sure if there's a specific USB setting, but I bought the adapted and it works with Chainfire's DSLR Controller no problem. I plugged in the playstation 3 remote and had no luck, nor any detection of the device. Tried running an n64 emulator to try to map the keys, no luck there either.
All of the guides seem to be using a Xoom, I'm on the brand new OTA on the GT10.1
Anyone else?

Which kernel are you running? Did you read my notes in the post prior to yours at all?
So, if i get the official USB adapter my regular wireless keyboard (Logitech Wave) should work seamlessly. Right?
I've just been using the "SixAxis Controller" app from Dancing Pixel (you can find it on the Android Market) to connect my PS3 controller to my tablet over Bluetooth. It's worked great for me (note: I use yongzh's emulators)
Hope that helps with the PS3 issues...I don't really know much about the USB adapter as I don't use it.

galaxy 10.1 usb adapter.

So I got my new galaxy 10.1 usb adapter. I was eager to try it and plugged in some usb drives, and multi memory card reader. I was hoping that memory card reader will see some of my sd cards. This could be awesome since I can carry movies/music/data/etc.
After trying some devices, I’m really, really, really, really disappointed. I'm hoping that I got a defective product and others had better luck.
I have tried 6 different usb drives. The size ranges from 512m to 12g. Out of 6 drives, only 4 of them were able to read . It failed to read/mount the 12g usb drive. I was very disappointed by this. My computer was able to read all of them. Some of the brands included lexar, data traveler, no game brand, Kingston, and pny. The no name brand works really well.
Since usb drive test was somewhat disappointing, I tried the memory card reader. I plugged the usb cable to usb adapter, and plugged in the memory card reader. It FAILED to read all my sd cards. I only tried 4, but they all failed. The brands included scandisk, pny, transcend, and Kingston. By the way, the memory card reader works on my computer, and it reads all the sd cards.
Finally, I tried couple of usb game controller, one no name brand, and other ps3. It seems to recognize that it’s an usb device, but that’s as far as I got. I thought maybe I need some software from the market to make those work, however, I did not find anything. I tried some emulators, and few games, but it did not work. I did read that galaxy tab supports gaming controller. Well, there goes that theory.
Maybe I’m not doing things correctly, or this usb adapter does not support everything that I wanted. (usb drive , memory card reader , and game controller . I didn’t even try keyboard or mouse. At this point, I don’t even care)
I welcome being schooled, if someone can help me make this work.
Is anyone else having issues? Or is it just me? If you have the usb adapter, please chime in. I’m curious, what works and what doesn’t.
received mine as well. I have tried keyboard and a wireless mouse adapter which worked wonderfully.
I also tried a third party xbox 360 controller to no avail. A quick google search said that android 3.1 may face limitations based on manufacturers, but not the software itself.
Here's what I have confirmed will work stock so far:
FAT32-formatted drives (Tested so far - Corsair 16GB thumb drive, 16GB Transcend Class 6 SDHC in a Rosewill SD card reader)
In the case of the latter I could see files but didn't try opening any - I know my tab doesn't support Pentax PEF format. Also, I put the SDHC into the reader before putting the reader into the tab, and put the reader into the USB dongle before putting the USB dongle into the tab.
Here's what I know will NOT work stock, but in theory should be usable with some work/tricks:
NTFS drives (requires a module from pershoot's optional "lib" archive of his kernels, and I think some manual mount magic)
PS3 controllers (requires a module from pershoot's optional "lib" archive, I have not tested this yet)
Xbox360 controllers (same deal as PS3 controllers)
I totally forgot to check the format. It didn't even occure to me. I got to reformat every drive, and try it again.
Have you guys try any type of memeory card readers?
I received mine today and I am also disappointed. One of the main things I wanted to do with it was to transfer files from my phone to the tablet. When I plug it in, it is recognized by the tablet, but it fails to connect. Does anyone know if this is something that is possible? It reads an old 1GB USB drive just fine.
I tried using the adapter with a bunch of devices (NTFS external hard drive, FAT32 16GB thumb drive, and the Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver [the thing that lets me connect a wireless controller to a PC]) and so far only the FAT32 16GB thumb drive works. Now, I understand I need the "lib" archive, but would that optional "lib" archive also allow the wireless gaming receiver to work?

Well for the memory cards fat32 should work fine.controllers definitely don't work. I called them and rhett said they don't know anything about the controllers.no issues yet. Please call them up to make it an issue. 3.1 allows controllers. Samsung doesn't allow. The only way I can see using game controllers right now is to root. Really really sucks. Very mad.

From the "for what its worth" department...
I tried a Lexar 1GB SD card formatted as FAT, plugged into a DigitalMatrix SD USB Card reader.
No joy.
I reformatted as FAT32 and tried again. No joy, but I got an error, "USB device is not working properly" or some such notice.
I then powered down (all the way) the tablet and restarted it with the SD Card/USB card reader/Samsung adapter all plugged in to the Tab.
It started up and recognized the USB adapter and storage.
Just realized something. It only takes externally powered devices. Controllers won't work. No controllers I know of plug into the wall. Controllers gave their own supply but to get them to sync to devices they use the device power. No controller for the galaxy tab unless they issue a usb adap that supplies power. Heard rumors they might be in the works. But I may just return mine and get the sony s1 or the s2

Samsung allows controllers - I just tested a Nyko USB gamepad and it worked fine.
HC3.1 supports standard USB HID controllers. The Xbox 360 and PS3 pads are NOT in this category - these are nonstandard devices that were never meant to be used with anything other than their host systems, which is why any host running any OS needs special nonstandard drivers or software to interface with them. Samsung is under no obligation to support game controllers that were never designed to hook up to anything other than their respective systems to begin with.
Edit: The Tab 10.1 does not have any requirement for the device to be externally powered. However, the Tab is not capable of supplying the full 500 mA that some devices (such as spinning hard drives) require. If the tab required ALL devices to be externally powered, thumb drives wouldn't work. Controllers are usually low-current devices (exception: ones with vibration might exceed the current limits when they vibe) - the Tab will give you a specific error telling you that a device drew too much current I believe.
Edit 2: PS3 controllers will try to recharge their battery if connected to a USB host. This will cause an overcurrent error if the battery is not already charged. As mentioned above, since PS3 controllers are not a standard HID device they require a special kernel module to be loaded, hid-sony from pershoot's lib archive if you're running one of his kernels.
Well, I'm glad that I wasn't the only one with issues. I did reformat the usb drives, and 5 out of 6 works. One still doesn't want to play nice.
My memory card reader is still no go. I will have to try with powered usb hub, but I can't seem to find mine. I'll have wait until Monday when I get to work.
It was nice thought that I could use the game pads that I already own, (xbox 360/ps3). Hopefully someone can figure a way to make it work.
I just found couple of my old usb game pads and they do work.
Also, I tried my old ps2 controller with radio shack usb adapter, and surprisingly it works. I was very amused. Too bad wire is all over the place.
Also, one of the down fall of usb adapter is that I can’t use my case as stand.
I have Belkin,Verve Folio Case, and I can’t fold them over with the adapter. Or charge the galaxy tab with the case closed. oh well.
Oh. Ok. So I will try to fully charge my controller. Plus I will just try my old six axis ps3 controller since no dual shock. I dont have any pc conteollers. But thanks for the help.

Thanks for the info. I looked up some info and it said<a href="http://www.ps3.jim.sh/sixaxis/usb/> this</a>. But I tried charging and it seems to me that I need a third party controller or a pc controller. I have a stock device. Haven't had a reason to root. I still the message high powered device. It seems that I am the only one to ever get that message cause samsung said they don't know what it means either. Has anyone gotten that message and was able to actually read it. But it seems I will have to root in order to get it to work. I bought mine with an unlocked bootloader.(aren't I lucky) I can't find anythreads to root my tab.our at least none that consistently work. Most are for locked bootloaders.
Patriot Rage XT 32gb works perfectly. I have 2 USB gamepads for PC. Logitech not working at all, although i see usb connected. An old Microsoft gamepad with USB adapter works better. I tried to play Mario 64. Dpad and sensor work but none of the buttons seem to work. When in settings I try to remap the buttons. It clicks but the emulator does not catch (memorize) them. BTW I use a Satechi R1 Stand. It is very well done. Now I need a working game controller.

Which N64 emulator? Yongzh's N64oid? Yongzh's emulators seem to have issues with catching a lot of buttons as "<unknown>" which don't work in the emulator.
My Nyko works great with SNES9x EX, but not with SNESoid.
Fat 32 thumb drive, Sd card reader both work.
Ntfs drive, xbox controllers official and mad catz wired failed to work.
Using touch wiz rom.
Out of curiosity, if you got your SD card from Samsung where did they ship from?
I noticed my tracking info said that my package accepted/picked up at 7:24 pm on July 16, 2011 in NORTH HOUSTON, TX 77315. It's not scheduled to arrive at my home until July 21st.
I ask this because if I am reading this correctly it is taking my SD adapter 5 days, 3 if I go business days to reach me at my home which also happens to be in North Houston. I literally could walk there, pick it up, and walk back home before mine will arrive in the mail.
Sorry to ramble on, just seems like with whatever Samsung device I buy I always seem to be waiting on something to make it work.

Sixaxis controller

I tried to plug in my sixaxis controller and weird things happened.
1st an App came up Livewire I think saying a PS3 controller had been connected. It wanted me to set a.default.
2nd I got am error message saying the device requires too.much power.
What the heck? Is.there some way to hook up a sixaxis? I was using a USB otg cable
I thought a benefit of.this thing was PlayStation certification? And while we are on the subject where is the PlayStation mobile app?

Found the Apps, thanks!
As for the Controller, I did try to plug directly in. No such luck. It worked on my Galaxy Note. I was hoping since this is a Playstation Phone, this would work directly. I may have to buy the dock. This is certainly not the only reason I got the phone but it was a selling point.
It seems my search for the "Perfect Phone" contiues. When I first jumped into Android it was for the Xperia Play. I thought the game controls would make it the best phone. Well, it had other shortcomings as we all know. Chiefly for me was the camera. No Zoom was a big one. I have since been through about 15 phone and tablet combinations including: Galaxy Tab, Note and Skyrocket. Sony Tablet S, Xperia X10 and X10 mini. Motorola Atrix, Xoom, Razr and Backflip, the Acer Iconia Tab, Both Dell Streaks and the Archos G9.
All I really want is something on which I can Game, that also has a good camera. I'm still holding out hope that the ION will fit that bill. Maybe a dock will help.

No software, NFC or Bluetooth. With a keyboard and mouse it practically is a mini PC. I have used my livedock with the PS3 remote plugged into it with my Xperia S to play Dead Trigger and Shadowgun on the HDTV through HDMI. Also have my mouse connected to play some big screen angry birds. Gonna do some testing for someone on te Sony forums with keyboards and mouse. You can also plug in a USB harddrive or thumb drive to get extra OTG storage.

Ok, I've got the Smartdock for the Ion from AT&T today, and tried plugging in my charge cable, and a ps3 dualshock 3 via charge cable, and just get msg about device detected is using too much power, and that's it, nothing pops up, even the instructions aren't a help. Just did it with mine and it worked fine. Used the usb cable and charger plug that came with the ion (EP850), some hdmi cable I got online and my PS3 controller and it worked fine. Never had it give me any errors about device using too much power. I would say make sure you are using the EP850 power plug and maybe try different cables.
I'm using the extremely limited length Ion cable. The remote navigation works fine, just not the ps3 controller. Though, seems with my diminished battery life, my phone has more issues than this at the moment. Just biding time and waiting on the Xperia T to release.

I noticed that the Dock won't work if you're charging off of something designed to deliver USB-level power. You'll need a specific charger like the one that came with your Ion (if one didn't come with the dock).
The only problem I was having when trying to game with the ion and SixaxiS was that it was lagging slightly pushing 1080p to my TV, but not flinching at the 720p on the phone. Any suggestions on settings to modify or somesuch?

[Q] PS3 controller on T-Mobile GS3?

So I see people all over the internet connecting PS3 controllers to their android phones for playing games and stuff, and I want in on the action. However, for the life of me, I can not figure out how to do it.
It seems like everyone with a GS3 can just plug in the usb otg cable, plug in the ps3 controller, and it just works. However with me, this isnt the case. In videos I have seen, using the joystick or dpad can select apps and navigate the homescreen, on mine nothing happens. Keyboards work just fine, as do flash drives, however when I use the PS3 controller nothing seems to happen on the phone. The lights on the back of the controller blink, but that's about it.
Does anybody have any suggestions as to what to do? I would love to use it WITH a wire and a gameklip so I don't have to root and use the sixaxis app. I just got this phone and I really do not want to risk a brick.
Any help would be appreciated!
PS: Just tested with a USB N64 controller my brother has lying around, and this thing works just fine. Tested it out in paper mario with an emulator

Use sixaxis controller from the market. Instructions are on the app. It's a no brainer . It's what I use

As I said towards the end of my post, I do not want to use this app as I am not fully comfortable rooting the phone yet.
Just plug it in, phone has support for it outta the box. Just grab a micro to usb adapter on amazon for like 60 cents. I'd suggest ordering a few from diff retailers because qc SUCKS.

Hehe I got excited and jumped to reply. Whoops.
I'd still try another adapter and another cable to the ps3 controller. Like I said qc sucks. The OTG cable I got is super loose and has to be convinced to work. The second one I got didnt work period.

As I said in my post, I HAVE an OTG cable. It works just fine with a keyboard, a usb drive, and a USB n64 controller that I have lying around. It is literally only the ps3 controller not working on the phone. It is lighting up, meaning it is plugging in successfully, however unlike the keyboard and n64 controller, it isnt sending button inputs correctly.

Oh sorry my fault for not reading your post fully :3 I thought you had to be rooted for either otg or Bluetooth method.

Try a different (original ps3) controller and report back if it works.

It may be the controller- just because it is flashing does not mean that it is fully connected. Its obviously not an original controller since its wired (at least I have never seen a wired ps3 contoller be original Sony but do admit I could be wrong since I never really cared to look/buy one).

I'd hope its a real controller, its the one that came with my ps3! oh and its plugged in with the mini-usb cable that it comes with (controller -> mini usb to usb -> usb otg -> gs3). Haha but yeah i'll try with a 2nd controller when I have a chance, probably shouldve done that first now that youve mentioned it.

USB otg bluetooth dongle?

If I get a usb Y cable or a powered usb hub, would a bluetooth dongle work? I think i can score a free ipad case with a bluetooth keyboard so i have to see how i can plop the little kindle in, but it would be nice to bring my kindle with me to school to type up research or whatever i need. I know there are threads about it but those date back in 2012 around may or so, so things could have changed
Yes. I was successfully able to get some flash drives to work, you just have to get chainfire's USB otg apps. I would imagine Bluetooth dongles would work as well

Alright thanks! Ill try it out and buy a Bluetooth dongle. I do have a wireless keyboard but it would be weird to lug around a full sized keyboard for a little tab
