[Q] Need USB OTG and Tethering - what is best ROM to flash? - Samsung Captivate Glide

Hi,
I'm on Samsung SGH-i927 (Captivate Glide) from AT&T currently running stock (but rooted) Gingerbread (was rooted by the ebay seller I guess).
I basically just need two more features to work:
USB OTG so I can connect USB hard drives (via a hub) and keyboards
USB and wifi and preferably Bluetooth tethering so I can use phone's internet on my laptop
What is the best course of action? Should I upgrade to ICS or JB or CM10, or are there some fixes to Gingerbread available? I wouldn't like to lose any currently available features (e.g. physical keyboard working 100% - I'm a heavy VX ConnectBot user).
I tried to look around but the CyanogenMod things seem to be very beta still, and I'm not quite sure if the AT&T 4.0.4 upgrade will fix my issues or not. I wouldn't want to upgrade unless necessary, and when I do upgrade I'd rather use the best available version out there.
Many thanks

Your best bet is one of ninthsense's ROMs with the SYM key hack. I don't think you'll need a dedicated voice search or ".com" button for ConnectBot

Thanks, I'll check it out.
Thing with voice search and the .com button is they act as Tab and Esc, and I use Tab quite a lot for autocomplete... And Esc to change windows in irssi. I guess I could live with them remapped, but not sure how to do it in VX ConnectBot.

Could you post a link to these ninthsense's ROMs? I can't quite find them here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1621350
And google wasn't very helpful either.
Thanks.

His two ROMs are:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2057288
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2053471
I know he put the SYM key hack in one of them, I don't recall which. It may be in both.
Alternately, the hack can be applied to any of the AOSP based ROMs (CM10 etc) with a little putzing around in ADB, and then it sticks until you next flash a ROM.

Many thanks, they look pretty cool!
Do you know if the voice-search and .com keys are completely dead in these ROMs? I'd be happy for them to not function i.e. in the browser, but maybe they work in VX ConnectBot?

Both my ROM's have the sym key hack after you apply the fixes given in the respective threads. The voice key is a simple search key now inside apps and brings up google voice otherwise and the .com has been mapped to <> and some more symbols.

Subtle functionality

Please help.
I have been using CM7 and lately the BCM version of ICS. On BCM im missing functionality that i used to have when stock/CM7. I don't know what this functionality is officially called so hard to search for it etc. Its things like:
-On any app where there's text (not just text message editior/text editor etc) you can select it and then tap the selection to copy text to clipboard. (exists in CM7)
- On web browser just tapping a phone number brings up dial prompt, tapping an address goes straight to maps and searches for it. (wondeing if former is part of Sense, later might have been ICS??)
Anyone know the official names for this stuff and whether it will ultimately be supported in BCM?. I am perhaps niavely thinking CM9 would incvlude all functionality from CM7??

You are naively thinking this is the right subforum to post this into.
Very helpful.
Any constrcutive comments?
Cm9 is a work in progress, it will get more features, but copying all cm7 features wasn't the objective, they wanted to give a more polished presentation this time..........for such features, i say you wait for aokp ROM to do that, coz those guys pack the ROM with teeny tiny features, you can search for more info comparing cm9 aokp.....

FAQ frequently asked questions

I'm posting this mostly for informational purposes to try and stop the same question being asked a billion times like some questions have been. ill try to keep this up to date as much as I can if I see questions getting asked repeatedly
Q: why should u root my g note 2?
A: wireless tethering works now, also: 5 words: every app in multi window. you can have every app in multi window action with a deodexed Rom and you can back up every app with titanium backup.
Q: how do I root my phone
A: I'm not going to go into this since there are many options, ways and since it changes so rapidly. look in the android development section of our phone's forum for the best option for you. Just do an in-forum search for root.
Q:What is the difference between the firmwares/what does all this talk about LJ1/LJC/LK8/MA5/MA7/MC2 mean?
A: different firmware names are usually associated with updates to the stock system files. they are named after the modem (or radio software) and usually bring improvements or changes to the phone capabilities or bugs. there is usually different root methods for different firmware. this phone came stock with LJ1, got updated to LJC soon after to include multi-window and extended toggles support, and recently (as of the last time this post was edited) we got a leak of LK8 which brings minor stability and Bluetooth fixes. MA5's leak was a bit useless as nothing seemed to change. MA7 brought 4.2 and "Google wallet support" more on why it's in quotes in the wallet question. MC2 was supposed top bring bug fixes for many things including wallet but most can agree the wallet problem persists.
Q:My Wi-Fi turns on sporadically. how do I fix it?
A: Turn off connection optimizer under settings-wireless networks-more settings-mobile networks-connections optimizer
Q: How do I unlock the bootloader?
A: No need, only the Verizon one comes locked
Q: How do I draw on pictures?
A: In gallery go into the picture itself then press the menu button then tap on draw on image this flips over the image and you can draw on the back. for the front see the next question
Q: How do I draw on any app like in the commercial?
A: take a screenshot WITH THE PEN by holding the pen button and the screen for a few seconds it will take you to the screenshot to draw on it
Q: Is there any way to wireless tether?
A: now there is! go to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1988735 and install that apk. it works with lj1 and ljc and on rooted and with busybox
Q: How do I get music controls on the lock screen?
A: you can't get them directly on the stock lock screen if you're not using security (it works with pin, patter, etc but not swipe), but it will let you pull down the notification bar to use the music controls that show up there. if you REALLY want it directly in the lock screen you'll need a lock screen replacement app that allows it
Q: My pen touches when coming into hovering range/it's too hard to click with it
A: there is two ways to fix this.
1. the crude more dangerous way is to smack it on a hard surface until it works for you (which I don't recommend)
2. the second is to adjust the potentiometer on the pen. pop the button off the pen and turn the screw closest to the tip clockwise for pens that touch while hovering and counterclockwise for pens that are too hard to tap with. trust me this is really easy.
Q: How do I turn on/off 4g? my old phone had a notification bar toggle!
A: go to "settings-wireless networks-more settings-mobile networks-network mode" and select "cdma" to turn off 4g, or select "cdma/lte" for 4g on
Q: does s-beam work with non-samsung phones that have nfc?
A: partially. if the file is small enough it will go through if not it takes the receiving device to a broken pay store link
Q: does Google wallet work?/why doesn't Google wallet work?
A: it's not officially supported before MA7 , but you can enable it, follow these instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2037416. After MA7 it's supposed to work naively without hacking but a lot of people especially those rooted it's been nothing but pain. try using it straight from the market and if it doesn't work seek individualized support from the q&a section
Q: no flash on jelly bean?
A: YouTube and most up to date websites are updating to html5. if you still find websites that tell you you're not good enough for not having flash then download it from blapkmarket.com or aptoide
Q: How do I take screenshots?
A: there are three ways with this phone:
1. with the pen: hold the pen's button and the screen for about 3 seconds. only this one takes you straight to drawing on it.
2. with the buttons: hold the home and power button together for about 3 seconds.
3. with the touch screen: swipe your entire palm from left to right on the screen, like you're cleaning all of it off. it's a bit tricky but play around with it you'll get it right every time with practice. *this one needs to be enabled under motion settings*
Q: why does my phone get so hot while charging?
A: the phone will get hotter while charging on low battery from the stock charger because it will try to take as much current as it can and the stock charger can provide 2 amps other charges don't give as much power to the phone so it won't be as hot. but don't worry, the phone itself monitors the battery's temperature and will shut off completely if it gets too hot for its own (or your) safety.
Q: How do I root the latest update/update if I'm root?
A:LK8/MA5/MA7/MC2 needs stock firmware to update as of the last time this post was edited.
Q: how do I get more apps on multi window?
A: get on the latest deodexed Rom by getting a custom recovery then flash this mod (which works in MC2 even though it didn't say so) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1982452 which initially dumps every app into multi window.
Q: How do i get pop up browser (or another browser) back?
A: go to settings> applications and select the browser that had the default url handling and clear it's defaults, once you do that you should get asked which browser you want every time
Q: How do I skip music tracks/pause without turning on my phone?
A: while you can't just hold the volume buttons like in other phones the end call button on the stock headphones can pause and skip tracks. just click I once to pause, twice rapidly to skip
Q: can i use my mhl adapter and usb otg at the same time?
A: not with simple accessories, but there are ways around this.
1. the dock can do this (but it's always out of stock)
2. use Bluetooth: set up your mhl adapter and have Bluetooth peripherals like ps3 controllers, mice and keyboards.
3. use the Wi-Fi to your advantage: set up your usb otg and stream with allshare, set up an ftp from your phone. or set up your mhl adapter and access your computer files through wifi ftp
4. you can get it done with some tricky wiring, soldering and maybe a bit of cunning. but if you are someone who could get this done with instructions you won't need instructions to figure it out. all you need to know is USB otg pin out that mhl needs power to the phone and the adapter and that diodes and resistors make your apparatus too heavy and ugly and you might as well just buy a dock
Q: how do I change what the physical buttons do?
A:to change the back and menu keys just change it's value on /system/usr/keylayout/generic.kl back is 158 menu is 139. to edit what the hard press buttons do you have to change them BOTH IN GENERIC.KL AND GPIO-KEYS.KL or else your phone will freeze every time you press these, home is 172 in both files, volume down is 114 in both files, volume up is 115 in both files and power is 116 in both files.
I found this specially useful in combination with the soft keys below to make home button a native search button
Q: How do I enable soft keys and/or disable hard and capacitance keys?
A: simple tweak:
to add soft (in the screen) keys follow this:

I have the AT&T version, but I doubt it's different in this regard... For the lock screen music controls, they do appear at the top if you use a lock screen other than swipe or tilt. When you use Pattern or PIN, it shows the music controls, but you lose the quick app links. To get both (not at the same time though), you can select Pattern or PIN with swipe gesture. It will show the swipe lock screen with apps at the bottom, then when you swipe the screen it will show your pattern or PIN and the music controls at the top. I've had to resort to using the Pattern unlock just so I can get music controls
Interesting post. Thanks a lot
Q: how do I get more apps on multi window?

[Q] is there any apps where you can connect the glide with a tablet to use keyboard?

I'm searching for a way to connect my glide to my note 10.1 so it can be easier to type without the need to buy another physical bluetooth keyboard. All suggestions welcome .

If you have root, try LANmote.
https://play.google.com/store/search?q=lanmote
You should be able to type any characters (unicode) using LANmote.
If any special characters you type doesn't work, let me know what you did and we will fix it.
Last time I tried Droidmote, it didn't support unicode..
Sorry for the late response, I have been busy lately. Droidmote didn't work well with this phone, and neither did LANmote. But LANmote has nice features. The button mapping for the physical keyboard to my tablet is off, and has a small lag to it when typing fast. Using the buttons to move about the tablet only brings up the search bar, and pressing other buttons inputs character. Using the mouse moves the cursor, but when I click on an application, it doesn't open. I do like LANmote however. It has a simple setup feature which is easy to use.

You can always change the keyboard input mode to "Send text manually", so you type all your words first and then press enter before entire string of text are sent across to the device running LANmote.

This is obviously keymapping issue. Yes, the mouse click is also related to key mapping.
I suppose you have root on your device, right?
If you can provide logs, we might be able to see why keypresses didn't work the way it should.
As far as I know, LANmote works fine and keypresses works without issue on my Galaxy Nexus.
Does Droidmote have the same keypress issue on your Android device?
because both app use similar method, if Droidmote also have same keypress problem... the issue is likely to be with your device's OS rather than the app itself.

[Q] Rootbox Digital Keyboard Issues - How To Resolve

Well I purchased a couple of i927r's from newegg, got them updated to ICS, rooted. Decided to go with JB rootbox as it seemed to be what I wanted, simple, effective. Just got both phones activated on ST recently, so far been liking them. But a couple issues I am having with them are primarily related to the digital keyboard. I don't really plan on using the physical keyboard much...the phone was at the right price so I guess it's there if I need to use it. But whenever I try to use the digital keyboard for mms, email, searching I hit one letter and it closes. If you keep tapping the word, the keyboard will come back up, but eventually closing again, usually a few keystrokes later.
Both phones do this, both have the most recent rootbox update via goomanager and teamwin. I would post this in the dev thread, but alas I do not have enough posts to. I am searching, but I can't seem to find an answer. I do like the stock digital keyboard, maybe I should try a different one? Anyone else have this issue? The physical keyboard is okay, but I prefer the digital one even on the smaller screen. Thanks for your time.
Have you tried different keyboards.just saying you can try Swype? Or another from the market and see if it still does it.

[Q] bt keyboard INC2 with evervolv 3.2

Hey All,
As the title (I hope) indicates, I'm looking to get a bluetooth keyboard to hook up to my INC2. I (suppose) foolishly bought a keyboard already (Motorola Xoom) and I thought no prob- updated software, bluetooth is bluetooth, and I should be good to go. Not so. I can pair them, but I cant get they keyboard to actually work as an input device.
Also, I cant seem to pair that keyboard (successfully) with my PS3. I dont think I'm just bad at pairing things, as I'm able to do it with tons of other stuff, so I'm looking for advice. Did I pair it wrong somehow? Do I need to get a different keyboard? Will the INC2 just not work with keyboards?
Thanks so much!
Sleepraider
nothing?Any thoughts? Is the keyboard crap? Is this a obvious thing that I missed? Any keyboards known to work that are relatively inexpensive?
See if you can find an app on the market that supports bluetooth keyboard support, Most often what you need is a substitute keyboard app, kind of like when people hook up PS3 remotes or wii motes to their phones. Here's a link to an app I just quickly searched up as an example. I can't personally vouch for it though.

Alright.. I'm giving it a quick try right now. Had thought I tried that app, but I tried a ton w/o any success., so I'll try again.
FWIW, this is one of the most important features for me at this point, so I'll do any ROM the INC2 can handle if it means making this work.
Sleep
Tried it.. and pretty much every decent looking app I could find in the app market.
Testing now to see if I can pair my new keyboard to my desktop via bluetooth and if that works. Maybe the keyboard is actually dysfunctional?

I'm back and I wanted to supply more info. I connected the bt keyboard I just bought with my desktop.. it works great on there.
I connected my desktop BT keyboard to my phone-- same prob; it pairs, never connects. Looking much more like a phone/software issue IMO.
Wondering if this is the phone (shouldnt be, right?) or if this is my ROM. If its the ROM, any ROM that might work? Any solution....at all?

The only way you're going to know if it has any possibility with working is if you can pair it on the stock official (or close to official, ie...andybones stock) software. If it doesn't work there, it's highly unlikely that it will work on any rom. If it does, then you'll probably have to just try each rom one at a time. I don't think that's a highly sought after feature for other people though, so it's unlikely much development has been put into it.

I'm a grad student and where I work blocks my gmail, which was the main reason I wanted the keyboard, so I could type well formed responses while at work when not busy, and not have to wait to do all my "student work" when I get home from work. I guess I'll likely end up finding another solution. Perhaps I can use my netbook with my phone and get a wifi hotspot going to be able to answer emails? I guess I need to toy a bit more.

It sounds like you are opposed to on-screen keyboards, but have you tried any custom ones? I can type very quickly with swiftkey...

I've tried all of them.. there's nothing wrong with them.. I just dont like them. I'm an excellent typist with a typical keyboard, but I admit I just suck with touchscreen keyboards...
No worries, I just played around a bit and was able to easily set up my netbook to use for gmail while I use my phone as a hotspot. If anyone has a good app recommendation that will allow me to track how much data that actually uses, I'd love that. Seems like a much easier request than the BT keyboard request.

Now I'm thinking about it.. what if I installed Ubuntu.. which would likely have the drivers for bluetooth. I'm a very experienced linux user and have 5+ years of ubuntu experience. Perhaps using ubuntu on my phone is the workaround I've been looking for! Do we know if you can use USB keyboards (I'd expect this to be true) when you install ubuntu alongside? Anyone done it well on a DINC2?
Don't know if you found a solution yet but i found this
