[Q] Rootbox Digital Keyboard Issues - How To Resolve - Samsung Captivate Glide

Well I purchased a couple of i927r's from newegg, got them updated to ICS, rooted. Decided to go with JB rootbox as it seemed to be what I wanted, simple, effective. Just got both phones activated on ST recently, so far been liking them. But a couple issues I am having with them are primarily related to the digital keyboard. I don't really plan on using the physical keyboard much...the phone was at the right price so I guess it's there if I need to use it. But whenever I try to use the digital keyboard for mms, email, searching I hit one letter and it closes. If you keep tapping the word, the keyboard will come back up, but eventually closing again, usually a few keystrokes later.
Both phones do this, both have the most recent rootbox update via goomanager and teamwin. I would post this in the dev thread, but alas I do not have enough posts to. I am searching, but I can't seem to find an answer. I do like the stock digital keyboard, maybe I should try a different one? Anyone else have this issue? The physical keyboard is okay, but I prefer the digital one even on the smaller screen. Thanks for your time.

Have you tried different keyboards.just saying you can try Swype? Or another from the market and see if it still does it.

The default keyboard crashes when used. It is recommended that a third party keyboard is used until the bug is resolved. There's a fair number available on the play store. Avoid any that are directly based on the jelly bean keyboard

[Q] A few Nexus questions from an android noob. Thanks for your help!

Howdy....
I have a few questions that I'm hoping you can shed some light on....thanks in advance!
1) My home button jumps to the 3rd homescreen. This is different than on my previous Galaxy SII. Any way to get it to jump to the first homescreen?
2) When I switch to SVOX Classic TTS, and use Google navigation, each voice response goes on for 2 minutes talking about http this and that, with lots of garbled words. Sounds like it's describing an XML or HTML web page. Has anyone else seen this?
3) Chome to Phone is crashing. Is this just an update thing I need to wait for?
4) Jump Desktop also crashes... Also an update thing?
Thanks for any help you can offer!
Best,
Ben
Since I can't help with the other questions.. I will just go ahead and say that yes, the home button jumping to the third homescreen is normal.. Touchwiz does it differently, which is why the behavior is different.

Just to add most android phones I've had (two HTC and now the GNex) and the customs roms I've used (Sense, Blur, Vanilla, Liquid Metal), pressing the home button always led to the middle Homescreen. Samsung I guess really did copy i*hone (as much as I hate to say it).
2) Yes, I've experienced this as well - newest Maps and SVOX Classic with the U.S. English "Grace" voice. From earlier TTS problems I recall that it's explicitly logged (viewable with logcat) what is sent to the TTS engine, so maybe this could provide some clue.
3) Chrome To Phone works well for me, on all iterations of ICS (stock and custom) that I've tested.
4) Jump Desktop also crashes... Also an update thing?

We've fixed this crash. It was an ICS only crash.
Grab the latest Jump Desktop update (2.6.11+) on the market and you should be good to go!
Thanks for the responses...
Jump Desktop works fine now! Thanks for the update!
Still hoping for a SVOX TTS Update.
Is there any way to re-arrange the homescreens. Now that I have screen 1 setup, it's a bummer that I'll need to switch everything over to #3 to get it working. This is what happens when you migrate from a Galaxy S II. Is there an app that lets you switch home screens around? or the like?
Chrome 2 Phone seems to work now. Not sure what my issue was.

HTC IME MOD Keyboard crashing

I just flashed Calkulin new ICS rom and for some reason the htc keyboard crashing after typing a few letters. Ive searched this forum and found no answer. I PM calkulin about this problem and of course no reply. Can someone suggest a keyboard that just as good as this one or at least a fix to keep it from crashing out.
I like this keyboard because of the dedicated typing area it gives you when in portrait mode.

May I suggest Perfect Keyboard Free or the AI type keyboard. They are both good keyboards to me. I like Perfect Keyboard Free a little better. They are highly configurable and feel like the htc keyboard that I had on my EVO. I am currently using Perfect Keyboard on FC07 without a problem. It is fast, responsive, and does what I want it to do.

I've seen a couple posts with this issue, as well as it happened to me. For some reason the ics roms do not like the HTC ime keyboard. Perfect keyboard would be the way to go

If you use ICS Rom, there are lots of chances that you may see the weird stop errors from many places something like system apps, user apps and even from the network communications.
For many cases, if it started failing then it will continue to fail until you remove the failing apps. Or sometimes, rebooting the phone resolve the issue but it could happen again in any moment.
So, best way to resolve the issue in ICS Rom would be reinstalling the failing app.
In my opinion, it seems like there're some bad process or service running that makes other applications force-stopped. Once the application force stopped, usually the system is getting warm and hot (meaning it's continuously retrying to launch the application or doing some post processing).
If the re-installing the application does not resolve the issue, then the best way would be 'waiting' until stable ICS Rom comes out in the market.
For me, lots of application re-installed because of force stop error -
Youtube(stock), Waze, Xing player, n7player, battery monitor, email (stock), facebook(stock), Root Toolbox( seems like compatibility issue with ICS)...
I had the problem of the keyboard popping up even though I repeatedly selected SlideIt. I finally just took it out by way of TB
I use htcime_mod on my non-sense (lol at the pun) roms as well. I found that disabling the Prediction/Spell Correction/Word Completion under the Text Input option keeps the keyboard from crashing. This may suck for those of you who rely on auto-correction and suggestions, but i personally have a vendetta against t9 and i only use this keyboard for the ease of symbols access.
I proffer that the issue is thus dependent of the way the IME accesses the dictionary to correct/suggest words. Maybe the libraries are renamed/moved, and it is trying to access an invalid path? Just a theory.
Above all, remember that YMMV because I am using an HTC Vision (T-mobile G2) running CM9 pre-alpha 2.5 unofficial ICS build.
Hope this helps,
Rec

I had issues on Calk's so I downloaded Goodness and extracted the HTC IME MOD apk from it and pushed it to system/app. After setting the permissions and restarting I haven't had a problem since. Give it a shot and see.

[Q] Installing Google's Car Home app on the S3?

Hey guys, I wound up digging around wanting to add Google's Car Home app when I flashed a couple different ROMs and lost the similar app that came from Samsung. It wound up being pretty simple to do and it's been working great on my S3.
I wound up writing it up on my blog, you can find it here:
Manually Installing Google's Car Home App
The steps I wrote aren't necessarily specific to the S3. I had success with a few other Android devices too.
I haven't tried your version yet, but with previous versions on my VZW SGS3 Google Car Home loads and runs fine, but as soon as I customize it (add / remove apps), it no longer loads and FQs.
Have you noticed anything like this with your setup? Thanks!

No, I haven't noticed anything like this at all. That seems weird to me (although, I imagine there's a reason that Google doesn't list many devices as compatible in the Market).
I would recomend trying the version I've got out there and then also maybe installing it as a System App to see if that fixes your FQs?

I used TB to pull com.google.android.carhome.apk (v2.2.1) and com.google.android.cardock.apk (v2.2) off my Thunderbolt running 4.0.3 (I can't even remember what rom it's running now). After installing both to my GS3 (4.1.1 stock), Car Home seems to be working fine. Good thing, too, because all the alternatives in the play store suck.

[Q] Android 4.2.2 Keyboard AOSP

Hey All,
Jelly Beer's 4.2.2 update worked great on my Samsung S3. However, I went out and purchased a new Note 2 GT-N7100 T-Mobile T889. I love the phone. The only problem is that I got used to the keyboard that the guys included in with Jelly Beer 4.2.2 update. In the Input settings, the keyboard is listed as Android keyboard (AOSP). That's the keyboard that I want.
The one that came with the Note 2 is Samsung's own and it's awful. Yes, yes, yes, I've installed just about every other keyboard out there. I've purchased the paid versions and all. Still, nothing does the job as well as the keyboard AOSP. I was literally going to toss the phone because I can't type on it. Then I started to use the gesture part of it, and I'm getting used to that. However, I still want the AOSP one. I've looked all over in the Play store and nothing.
Does anyone have the direct link or the actual .apk that I can download?
Would really appreciate it.

I am wanting the same thing.
yes, there is a google keyboard in the app store. but its not the same as AOSP, AOSP has the symbols as long hold on the letter keys. and you can long press the "." and slide to choose ?! and others.
I tried pulling out the aosp keyboard from carbon rom, if I just install it, it works, but no sliding to type (like swype) and if I move it to system/app and set permissions, then reset, it just force closes... so... it kind of works... but I would really like to be able to slide type.

[Q] Looking for data on stability of major ROMS

Is there any good data on which of the major ROMs are most trouble free?
I am a pretty simple guy. All I really want is to be able to use my phone as a hotspot, take pictures without the camera app crashing and easy access to turn the torch on and off. Seems like a lot of the reviews spend a lot of time focusing on how many colors you can change and relatively little on the actually reliability of the ROM. This sort of leaves us asking eachother and it seems like everyone and their brother has an opinion on how stable any given ROM is and all swear by different ones.
At any rate, this just leaves me wondering if there is actually any good reviews or sources that summarize what the weeknesses of each ROM are. I know it is a tricky thing to ask, because they are always changing with each nightly build, but I have been pulling my hair out for the last couple years trying to find a properly stable ROM for my T999.
They cant really review stability and functionality on some roms, such as CM for example. Its going to be different for every model device, and even between 2 identical model devices you will still find one has issues while another does not. Thats why they usually stick to reviewing features and options. But also, what works best will vary from person to person even more so than from one device to the next. As is stated in all the "what's the best rom" threads, only you can determine what suits your needs best.
But for what its worth, imo, if its stability you're after, stick to whatever the manufacturer included on any given device.

I would stick with the stock rom, but I just really don't like it. I have also gotten very used to using a more stock version of Android and don't want to have to adjust back to using the stock rom, even if there are ways to get tethering to work.

What don't you like about the stock ROM? You say you want simple and don't care about changing anything, but you're not happy with stock either. What do you really want? lol. Also note, than any other ROM is not going to have the Samsung camera app, they are all going to be a lot more basic camera's, no wifi calling if you use that t-mo feature.
Torch on and off can be accessed with a shortcut on stock ROM, any third party app that lets you add a widget, or if you install xposed framework, you can add torch to the volume up button, so you can turn the torch on without even waking the phone. I'm with Doc, I'm a Touchwiz kind of guy too. I don't get the hate for it.
I just don't like some of the extra junk Samsung adds on. I like a more stripped down vanilla Android. I originally switched yo get rid of sVoice in particular and just got used to it. Not needing extra apps for WiFi tethering is a nice bonus.
At any rate. Just totally wiped the phone back to stock with Odin and installed the latest AOKP. No problems yet.
You can strip the Samsung apps out, and there is mods to enable native tethering.. But aosp or the kind is a nice option as well, just depends on what you want and need

Thinly veiled best ROM thread. SlimKat with Banks' minimal gapps.
I don't use my S3 anymore, but I have that ROM on it and my other two devices. It is filed under d2lte on their site, it's a unified build.

I never figured out what was causing problems with my last ROM. TBH, I don't even recall what the kernel and ROM combination was. It was just something some random XDA forum member suggested. The biggest issue is that every time I opened the camera app, went away from it and came back, it would crash. Also happened when switching between camera and video. Sometimes it would require a system reset to get the camera back. I think it was something to do with the app itself, cause other apps that took pictures never had any problems. Super annoying. There were some other issues to. I stuck it out for a long time because the app fixed a BT audio issue I was having and I was too lazy to do more searching or reflashing my phone from scratch.
Right now I am just trying to make my phone last until the Sony Z3 launches. I am pretty sure that will be my next phone. Hopefully it won't cost a crazy amount to import it if t-mobile doesn't get it right away.

AOSP camera was always crap in general but especially so on the S3.
You can get an updated on in the play store now, so you can freeze the AOSP one.

The camera in the latest AOKP was working fine, but I downloaded the Google Camera app just to check it out. Works fine taking normal pictures, but the blur mode causes it to crash when you try to take a picture and the panorama/photosphere modes won't take pictures. I found some other people with identical problems, but didn't see a clear solution.

It was originally for the Nexus 5, then they put it on the play store for everyone. Clearly issues with non Google devices.
I'd suggest a third party camera app, like Camera ZOOM or something.
