Whenever I try to backup all partitions in TWRP (system, data, efs, modem) it always fails with different symptoms. Usually it happens after it's done with system and is working on data. Symptoms are that sometimes it reboots into Android, sometimes reboots to recovery and sometimes just hangs. In all cases, I see some random size data.win created. I tried to remove data or system from backup and both times it succeeded. But with both enabled, it succeeded only 2 times. Both times I had CleanRom instałled. It never worked with other roms.
Also I tried both internal and external storage. Same effect.
Has anyone seen something like that? Any idea how to fix?

Look in the twrp thread in original android development. Pull a recovery log for bigbiff:thumbup:

I tried without compression and it went through. Thanks for the idea of this workaround.
I will also check twrp thread.

Why do most roms OP state to "fix permissions" directly after flashing the rom, when that does nothing... it fixes them in .3 seconds? lol.... pretty sure it's best to do it after setting the phone up the way you want. Where it takes a couple minutes and actually gives you a log of what is fixed. Just curious if I'm wrong in thinking all this jazz.

I had no idea either. But this cleared it up for me.

Probably just because it can't hurt to do one, that and if an issue arises they can be certain that it was done.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
Ive wondered it myself. Never do it though. To me its there for when you run into problems with FCs and such. I assume its the devs trying to be proactive for those who dirty flash.
Ive seen it screw things up to btw.

I know what Fixing Permissions does, just why they tell their users to fix them before anything can be broken, is where my curiosity begins, if I remember right even after a dirty flash they don't wont be fixed til after a reboot...
my way of doing things
wipe data/system/cache
flash rom
boot up>let sit for 5 minutes>install through TB or recover data
boot into recovery and fix permissions, which takes a couple minutes, if I have errors.
Congratulations, no one cares.

only fix permissions if you have issues of force closes or log cats are showing files as unreadable... basically if you are having issues of some sort.
also, good idea to fix permissions from terminal while booted into android if you are using a recovery that has not been updated in a long time

Oh, I know how to run and use fix permissions. I'm just curious as to why some rom cooks give instructions that are useless.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
That's a valid question.
I think it's an instruction for crack flashers.
It levels everything out.
Especially, if you are trying to keep your data

Hey guys I'm having some problems on miui and my phone in general. I have no root permission in miui and it force closes when I try to enter the app. Also I can't log onto xda if I'm not on WiFi.
This is probably my fave ROM and want to avoid going back. I don't have 4g and if I do its very slow and also my phone will cut in and out. I was wondering if there's any work a rounds to my problems, I flash correctly and fix permissions after I flash so I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I'm scared of my imei corrupting cause its happened a few times and can't back it up with miui cause I don't have permissions. I just reflash it and that works. I'm using cwm. Seems like literally nothing else I've tried works, flashing wise. Could it be my version of cwm is out dated? Also wondering if anyone has ever replaced their screen with one that's $14 off amazon and if the 7000 Nah battery is real. Thanks if anyone is able to answer my questions

This happens on rc4 as well as 6/02, I will try the newest nightly later today. Both seemed fine for a couple hours then started randomly rebooting. I have no idea what is causing this because when I flash both I did a factory reset and system wipe just to be safe. Is there something that I'm missing here? I restore with titanium backup but only the apps, not system settings.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
How often do reboots occur? Can you boot up your device normally or does booting process stops on boot animation screen (and then reboot)?
Perhaps your problem is not that serious as mine but It looks like something close happened to me too. I got the same behavior after I flashed RC4....it just went worse when I tried to fix it by restoring backups, then reflashing stock bla bla. There are few more with similar problems. No solution so far...sorry battery replacement did the trick for one user but not for another...

Happens with both my batteries, one is the stock battery. I can boot normally but sometimes I get reboots 5 or 6 times in a row before I can unlock.

Went ahead and clean flashed without restoring anything. It was a pain but better than having a phone that couldn't stay on. Still no idea what caused it.

Having this issue on Droid 4 (maserati) as well. Backing up ROM and I'll deal with it when I get home, gonna try a clean install of 6/5/2013.
So this is exactly what I did before the problem started happening. I was on version 7/15 and I went to the recovery and flashed the 6/10 version and cleared dalvik and cache and then fix permissions. When I booted up, it acted normal for a few seconds and then it started happening. It would start freezing and then get that and shut off. I flashed 7/15 again and the problem still occurred. I cleared ktweaker data too...
Please help, I didn't backup my room (it's on my pc and I'm on vacation) I'm using my brothers phone.
I had to wipe everything and start over. Flashing ROM and everything.

It's not the phone. It's ROM and kernel related.

I think it sounds exactly like what was happening to me. I will try to do what you did and remove my SD card next time it happens. I only seem to get that issue when im updating the kernel on Touchwiz ROMS, and on first boot it works ok for like 5 minutes and then the crazy lag, freezing then reboot loops start. From there every boot gets the freezing and lag within a minute of booting up and its either completely freezing up or rebooting itself over and over. The only way i figured i could get over it was doing a full wipe and re install my ROM and everything all over again on a clean install if i wanted to update the kernel. Definately going to try pulling the SD Card and see if that solves my issues next time it happens.

Did you debloat at all? Like delete system apps? I feel there are system level apps that i deleted and the ROM is trying to utilize them but it can't so it reboots. Cause if you look at the last_kmsg there aren't any kernel panics in it.

Not sure what the SD card has to do with anything but I removed it before I booted back up! If it happens again to you, then good luck I hope it fixes it!

I only disabled them, but that was a long time ago
I even disabled ktweaker last night and cleared the data to see if it would work and it didn't, so I'm not exactly sure what made it reboot

This happened to me once before where I went to do a CWM backup to my external sdcard and when it was backing up the data an error occurred then when I rebooted it would not find the sdcard, it took 2 to 3 days before it showed up again. I just tried a backup again and now I have the same problem, the sdcard is showing up perfectly fine on other devices. Does anyone have any clue what could be causing this? Also, it keeps a message popping up saying the sdcard was not removed properly. I have made successful backups before so I can't understand why it's doing this all of the sudden.
Sent from my LG-E980 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I got it to show up again by restarting it and powering it on and off a bunch of times till it showed up but can't figure out what causes the problem. It showed up once then I went back into CWM and it was gone again but like I said powering it on and off and restarting eventually got it to show up again.
