[Q] Does the Note 2 keep the browser in memory? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I have something that I'd like to know before I get a Note 2: Does it keep web browser tabs in memory?
On my Note 1, HTC One X, and my Nexus 7 I had lots of issues, where it would do things like this:
While it happens less often, it is still very annoying.
So yeah. Did any of you notice the browser reloading your running web pages when you came back to it after using different apps?

Multi tasking issues

Hi guys,
I am using a HTC one x atnt version. Am facing an issue with multi tasking. If I open a web page on any web browser and then start any other app and then using the multi tasking button and scroll to the web browser, it reloads the web page again instead of maintaining the page loaded.
Also for me spotify keeps logging out if I switch to another task.
Please advice as to why this is happening

If you do a quick search or glance around the forums, you can see that the multitasking issue was intentional on behalf of HTC. They have allocated so much RAM to sense that there normally isn't enough RAM to split up between all your apps, causing aggressive memory management. Fix is to root or wait for OTAs hopefully to remedy this issue.
Ok, i´m about to sell my HOX because of this.
I can´t root, because i will loose the guarantee. My gps is working very badly, so i need the guarantee.
But when i´m using a mapping software for hiking, each time i take a photo, the app restarts and with some apps i loose all the settings. Thats ridiculous.
My Winmo phones and lately my iphone did this perfectly.
So the iphone has a better Multitasking then the HOX? OMG
So i heard the Galaxy S3 is doing the same thing? Is that true? Which device can i buy then? a note or a galaxy s2?
thx, nearly
sell it then
I have an S3 and it doesn't do that.
I m finding that perceived multi tasking is getting worse by the device. I also have an iPad and the perception of multi tasking is better there.
Its based on the fact that a lot of android apps don't save state when they are closed. I don't know whether the developers are lazy

Wasn't this issue fixed on the 1.29 update?

But I'm not closing my apps. I'm new to android, but my understanding is that you close an app with the back button.
I always use the home button or the multi tasking button.
I set multitasking to 4 apps, but that didn't help.
If I just toggle between my GPS mapping app and the camera, it already doesn't work anymore.
And I'm not using the sense launcher. I use apex.
The iPhone and my Touch HD had both 512mb RAM. The hox has 1GB and still doesn't multitasking?
So is it safe to by an S3 instead? Does it have more free ram?
I also hope with the S3 I can root legally and maybe even get an asop Rom at some point, which would have a lot more ram and deal perfectly with multitasking.

It appears from comments that the AT&T One X right now is more aggressive in killing apps to free memory.
On the International version running the latest stock firmware, I can usually open and use 4-6 apps with the browser simultaneously without the browser being killed. These apps include Google Maps, Twitter, IMDB, Angry Birds, etc. Using System Panel, I've noticed that the One X will rarely kill apps until free memory drops to around 150 MB. From a restart, the One X has about 350 MB free.
Also, I noticed that flipping through Flipboard tends to especially cause a lot of frequent browser restarts, even when there is 200+ MB of free memory, maybe suggesting that some of its operations require large amounts of additional memory. Perhaps you have an app that is like that.
I would suggest using System Panel to check on your free memory, the memory used by your apps and the free memory threshold as to when the One X starts killing apps.
I just did a quick test right after booting my One X... I opened Google Maps, then Android's browser, then Chrome and then the Camera. Used each app for a few seconds only, not even loading opening pages on the browsers or taking pics with the camera. After doing all this, Maps had been killed and needed to be restarted and when I tried to open Chrome, it needed to be loaded again too.
With the big amount of hardware issues plaguing the HOX, I can't risk losing the warranty to gain root and fix this myself, and it seems clear that HTC won't provide a solution, so if the S3 doesn't have this problem I'll seriously consider exchanging my HOX for an S3.
The s3 is suffering similar multitaking/ram issues. I saw a thread in their Q&A section.

I returned my HOX due to the horrific lack of multi-tasking. Played around with the S3 last week in Europe. It seems just fine and did not have to reload any web pages or map programs.
Maybe you should look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1669074 I don't know why threads like that are not sticky...

Yeah, thats nice, but you need root for that and then you loose your guarantee. With buggy device like the hox i wouldn´t dare that.
Another plus for the ugly S3. Im considering now to get a second hand S2 and put cyanogen mod on it. And than i will wait for another superphone. Maybe a windows phone 8...
Just tested. Easily multitask with 4+ tasks. Including browser, camera, xda, music, messages

It is very safe to buy the S3 rather if multi tasking is a major issue. From what I've seem the OneX even closes the launcher and live wallpapers. Don't know why they didn't put two mb of ram. The S3i ave with the exact same apps doesn't close apps nearly anywhere as often.
The problem is with Android itself and maybe the developers. In that either the apps dont save state or the system doesn't request.
On iOS the OS closes all apps on pressing the home screen button but saves the apps state. So when u go back to an app its where I left it.
I would think android would have an advantage coz it doesn't immediately close apps. So when u go back to an app it's probably even progressed as is now more current than it was when u left it. The problem when it closes the app due to low resources the apps don't save state. Very frustrating.
Conclusion, get an S3 it won't close the apps due to low resources half as often.

So, now i got something odd.
2 days ago my HOX went super slow. Even in safe mode.
I resetted it and now i can toggle between Backcountry Navigator and the camera.
If i add one or two other apps, BN will restart.
Anyway, i recently switched to Mytrails and things are looking even better there.
So, i wouldnt call multitasking great now, but my basic needs are fulfilled.
It seems, now i have to send it 3 weeks to htc for repair the bloody gps-module...

[Q] Weird picture scaling in Chrome?

Hi all,
I got my Verizon HTC one a few days ago and noticed something weird that happens most often when browsing reddit. Any time I click on a link hosted at i.imgur.com the pictures are incredibly small in the too left corner. The attached file is an example.
Is this a chrome issue, HTC one issue, or both?
Chrome bug. It's fixed in the latest Chrome Beta.
Honestly, though, I would stick with the stock browser. It doesn't drain the battery as much since it's optimized specifically for the One, and it's a heck of a lot smoother.
I was going to ask that. I know chrome is stock on some phones, but everytime I try it, I go back to stock browser because chrome still isn't great on mobile. On samsung's browser, you even get your desktop chrome bookmarks so not much reason to use Chrome mobile.

Which browser do you prefer and why?

So what browser do you use on your flo and why?
On phone my choice is dolphin browser + jetpack. However, on my N7 I've been using chrome beta, since it syncs flawlessly with my pc. It takes a lot of space, though. I've greenified it, but do you guys know if it still takes more battery when using compared to other browsers?
I use Chrome in all my devices, mainly for the sync features
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 4
Chrome for the sync as well, and the AOSP browser for those rare cases when I need Flash. I used to use Dolphin back in the day but its data collection policies left a sour taste in my mouth and I never went back to it, even though it has probably changed its ways (I hope).
I use next browser Cuz it's fast and der r also many good plugins available for it and other than that I also use Chrome...

Chrome for most everything, flashfox when I need flash, I honestly haven't tried the asop browser for flash sites, but I assume I have to figure out how to install adobe flash on my device for it to work. As for why, well it just works(tm)
I use ASOP for me beats Chrome in everyway Give it a try.
Chrome on Android is the single most cr*ap browser there is, imho. Plus, with AOSP you can sync bookmarks as well and it is 1000x smoother. YMMV, obviously
AOSP number 1 here. Hardly need Flash, but it works very good. Especially reversed/night view is the best by far of all browsers. I use that for instance often at night opening links in gReader Pro (rss). White webpages are a no go than for me. (All reading apps and browsers should basicly have night mode and dark themes imo).
AOSP workes on my rooted N7/2, but it also worked when it was still unrooted. Via the install topic on this site
Second browser was Dolphin, but too often it would not load any webpage for a while. And bad nightview (grey characters on black background). Flash workes good on Dolphin. Chrome I do not like and had loading problems too here. Firefox no nightview (readibilty unsufficient). Ithink both Chrome and Firefox tend too get too heavy for mobile apps.
I must have tried every other browser on market and have removed them all. Because Chrome is always running itself even when not used I am considering disabling it. Because when I removed it from system/app-folder and installed it via Play Store so it could be Greenified,.OTA failed. Now I put it back. Those Google apps in sytem/app-folder irritates the hell out me. Disabled almost all already and replaced them for simular non-Google apps
AOSP because Flash and official from Google, also when I swipe away the last tab I have open it automatically closes the browser (unlike Chrome that keeps the black window still open).
I use Chrome for sync between my note 2 and my Chromebook. I also use Next browser for flash video

AOSP is so god.........Chome? for me... is the worst

I prefer using the stock browser.
Aosp all the way

AOSP browser, i love the pie control
doesn't matter how big the screen size is you can still navigate easily.
why did google take this browser out

I use both Chrome and AOSP.
For those that use AOSP and use quick controls do you have a black bar on the top that won't go away? Its like it can't go into fullscreen fully. Very annoying. After first turning on quick controls its fine, but navigating to a page the black bar shows up.
This is like this on stock AOSP browser across all 4.3 ROMs I've flashed across three devices.
Chrome though I may consider switching to something I can use adblock on
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4
Chrome beta here. Tried others including AOSP and regular chrome but find this beta smoother and better overall.
Firefox. Love the add-ons. I use last pass so it's necessary.

Chrome Crummy Performance

Has anyone else had issues with chrome on their g pad(original non google play). I find that if I open to many tabs (4+ ish ) things really start to get sluggish with scrolling, rendering and switching tabs. If I close some tabs things are great again. It cant be a limitation of the hardware cause I don't have these problems on my old gs2 and certainly not with my gs4, which has the same snapdragon 600 (but 200mhz faster). At times even with just one tab it will randomly hang for a bit or will hang when I click a link. Is this just after effect of the customization shiz lg put on here or does chrome just have a problem with this device in general? Or maybe its just me?

Right now I have the non GPE g pad running android 4.4 (CM11) so this might not be exactly what you're looking for. But when I open up 5 tabs switching and scrolling still works fine. It could be a side effect of LG bloatware, it could be something else. If you don't want to take the custom ROM road you could try using dolphin, which is another good browser for android. If you are rooted you could also try removing some LG bloatware with App Master or another root uninstaller. Good luck!

I have the gpad with chrome and firefox installed and none of them becomes laggy even if i open a lot of tabs. It certainly isnt normal for a tablet with a quad-core processor to become laggy when using browsers.
Have you tried other browsers to see if you still have the same problem when you open multiple tabs?

I've tried opera because its my preferred browser(yeah I know me and 3 other people) and it just crashes after like 20-30 seconds
I'll go try Firefox and dolphin.
The LG G Pad 8.3 comes with two internet browsers pre-installed, but Google Chrome is the most prominent, getting a lock screen shortcut and place in the home screen dock as default.

Problem with the web browser

Hi!
Quite often when I have one or two tabs open on the stock web browser (I'm on a rooted G3 16GB, stock rom) and I switch between tabs or maybe do something in another app and then return to the browser, the page has disappeared from the phone's memory and it's reloaded from the internet. Does anyone else have this problem? I don't believe it's an issue with low RAM, since I'm not running too many programs at a time, and quite often have only one or two tabs on the browser. It's really frustrating to wait every time when returning to the browser, since on my other Android devices the web pages keep open even when the browser isn't the active app.

Ive noticed this too, when you click on the tab (sometimes even just going between 2 tabs) the pages get reloaded.
I have same problem. I still didn't find any solution. It appears that non-stock apps manage to do better, but even if I use Chrome Beta (which I love and find to be the fastest), it behaves the same as it's stock counterpart.
I found other thing... G3 doesnt perform consistently. For example I run sunspider benchmark and:
- 1 day ~1300ms
- 2 day ~550ms (can keep few tabs for sometime)
- 3 day ~1000ms
- 4 day ~1300ms
Those results are unacceptable on current flagship All browsers tend to give similar results btw. What can be done? I think that's it's the problem on firmware side as non google/lg browser can keep tabs.
sad
Hi, i have the same issue on my G3, and everytime i unlock the screen, it reloads the web page, also in Opera browser and stock browser, i find this verry annoying. Not having this problem on the ex G2.
Maybe the announced update to Android 5.0 it will solve this.
