[Q] how to improve batterylife without any apps? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
as everyone im really happy with my GN2.. everyone says that the battery just drops 1% percent everyhoure..?? thats not the case with me.. it drops 10%-15%.. is there any settings you have done?? its still on stock rom didnt rooted YET
I didnt install/download any virus or fool apps from playstore (Ive read many threads but they were all the one who downloaded just random apps from playstore and that caused for battery drain..)
waiting for your answers..
ps: everyone is welcome with his settings.

Wow. 1% every hour? I won't be bothered to change my phone if that happens :silly:
A normal Galaxy Note 2 has a 1% drain every 10-20 minutes of screen-on time.
The screen-off time of the Galaxy Note 2 is indefinite. Depends on what you have on

haha when i first saw that i thought wOott 1% / hour impossible.. but when more persons said the same i thought "hmm maybe I'm wrong".. so they are ****ting maybe D
but tbh do u have everything on like google? google now etc??
now u have said that im pretty released from ma sorrow

No, I don't actually. I do not know what the screen-on time from persons' who have sync on.
I usually get 7++ or 8 hours screen-on time, from my usage.
That's with wifi, games, phone calls, messaging.

With this kind of device, you won't need Juice Defender

I leave everything on: data, wifi, autosync, nfc, autobrightness, everything.
I still get a full day with 5-6 screen time.
Just charge every night. No point disabling data and sync and everything. Makes it pointless to have a smartphone

Wow. Wifi and data on? You must have super internet, man! Coolness!

I've left the office just about an hour ago... Charge was 100% and I have opened video (auto-play next=ON) playlist. Trip to home has took about 40 mins and every single second device has played videos, non stop.. No app, nothing special. When I arrived, the charge was 99%
It's probably has its very own battery optimizing systems inside which is clearly avoiding energy leaks.
I guess, I don't need anything for now to improve charge durability... Just fyi about my little test~

Hello again,
Actually our phones need nothing for better pattery durability. But if you wonder your battery specifications, i would like to recommend "Battery HD Pro" from google play market. It supports Turkish language and more.
Good luck.

The gnote2 loses ~10% an hour on WiFi and ~15% on mobile data. You can get more than 10h reading books with white text on black background. And videos on internal/external storage can get you more than 10h display depending on the video. I generally get about 10h display in WiFi and 6-7h on a workday where I use mobile data and I haven't flashed a custom kernel yet. Too much extraneous junk with the current kernels. Just looking for one that allows custom voltages on various things, mainly CPU and GPU.
Sent from my GT-N7100

I don't use any power saving apps. I have everything turned on and syncing 3 email accounts. I lose 1% overnight and rarely lose a percentage when the screen is off. What did I do? Just turned off google now and the 3 tick marks under GPS setting. Good luck!

Just to share my battery drain, i play games almost 4 hours a day, rest of the time texting, maybe at most 2 hours of screen-off a day, my phone is 40% when it says 8 hours on, dunno what all you have, i have wifi, data sync, auto brightness, and well gaming, the game though are bike race and minecraft, but when with sometihng heavier like modern combat you can expect 6 hous and its 20% just sharing im stock rooted..

I agree with @akdenizx
Wanam's tips is so succesfully for battery life. I use my phone with this advice. I am happy. My phone is charged every 1.5 day by me
I want to one tip for wanam's tips.
Wi-fi sleep policy must set never.

Try using white text on true black background. Saves a lot of power on Amoled displays. The inverted colour option on the stock browser gave about 13 hours of screen time compared to the normal 7 hours

have u got spare parts? open it up and look at battery history and the running vs screen on time.
they should be the same but i can almost guarantee that your phone is still running whilst the screen is off. you need to find out the app which is keeping a wakelock on ur device and delete/change its settings

Sorry for the noobish question, but can I compare the two. I went to spare parts and could not see where to compare screen on time vs running.
I recently tried to calibrate y battery, but sinse my screen does not shut off on its own as before. I've aleady checked the screen timers and all is as it was before.
Right now I am @ 4.5 hrs since I unplugged and I am sitting @ 76%, with little use...kinda sucks!!!!

What kinds of widgets do you have running in the background and how often are they pulling data?
Also, how many days have you been on CM 6.1? I upgraded from RC3 and my battery life is much improved. The first two days it was eating a lot as it 'calibrated' itself but now I can easily make it through a full days use with about 40% to spare.
I adjusted my background widgets and how often they pulled data and this really helped my battery life. Also, a poor signal can have VERY ADVERSE affects on battery life. For example, I work in a prison where cell phone reception is awful. If I am at work for 3 hours and leave the phone in 3G mode, I can easily go through 30% battery while the phone tries to find a signal...
Any idea how long will it take the batt tocalibrate???? I did the recalibration process on thurday night, and my battery sucks now.
I'm sitting on 49% only 4 hours unplugged. Before I was getting somewhere around 55-60% at this time interval...
Any ideas?

Alright boys try this. I got over 2 days worth of lifetime with this set up.
-Download SetCPU
Set your profile to 245/245 screen off with priority at 100%.
-Turn brightness to 0%
-Turn GPS off (Go to Settings->Location and Security-> turn off all that GPS crap
-Leave 3G off until you actually need it, then turn it back off after you're done with it
-Leave bluetooth off
-Don't have garbage widgets lying all over the place on 7 homescreens. I only have like 5 widgets spread out on 2 homescreens.
Are you guys running CM 6.1? Cause I am.
Did you guys overclock?
Thank me if it worked out for you =P

Convolution Thanks for the reply, but im more interested in getting a few more hours but with certain level of freedom. I am not all that interested in switching things on and off every time I need them, but I understand what you mean.
I'm looking to get 16 hours of moderate use...that should be plenty. I currently turn off wi-fi and gps since I seldom use gs, and wifi is governed by a profile manager, and it's on only at night.
but setting connection down to 2G, and killing all screen brightness renders the device (IMHO) useless. Also, SetCPU @245 100%, would really hinder the device.
I am running CM6.1 Stable and I am running OC'd @ 1497, but on "On Demand" profile, so to use only as needed.
I still have to try Pershoot's kernel, I think I will flash it tonight to see what happens.
I am also experiencing some oddity with my screen time-out feature...it's not working.....my screen refuses to turn off by itself, I have to lock the device physically for it to take effect....not sure what changed...but the regular parameters are set properly.
I'm getting 2-3 days with the stock WWE ROM that came with the phone. Brightness is set to Auto, but I keep GPS, BT, WiFi and mobile data connection off until I need them. Other than that, I talk about 20-40 mins/day, send out a few texts, listen to the radio, read my feeds and e-mail - pretty much everything the phone was made for.
IMHO, the "calibration" is bullcrap, it's just an impression that it lasts longer afterwards.

Basically the same setup I have in terms of connectivity except for data.....does it really have that much impact on battery life?
What would I missing if I decide to turn data off?
Thanks!
Huge impact. Try it out for a day or two. Or just install Juice Defender, which disables it while the screen is off, turning it on at set intervals (like for 1 min every half hour) to let it sync.
Thanks Keinengel....I'll look up Juice Defender...sounds like the right thing!
i get atleast a day and a half out of my phone and i had it for about a week now. best battery ive had for a while now.
Wow guys...installed juice defender and pershoot's kernel, and only gone 1% in about 2.5 hour....I'll report again tomorrow

Juice Defender

I'm installing this as a last resort before sending my phone back. After hard reset and everything, battery is still a major drain.
For those that are using it, how well does it work? Which settings are you using?
I've only the free version for now but would consider upgrading if it does help?
Also, how do you prevent meebo from disconnecting when the screen turns off? Is that an option on the free version?

About Juice Defender, for me it worked with ~1.6x batterylife.
About Meebo: get Trillian, they made it for free this week. You stay connected even if your phone is off(for max of 1 day, changeable in settings) and you'll receive al the messages which came while your online the enxt time you login again. You can manage all your accounts on the PC with the regular Trillian program and then login on your phone with your Trillian account and all the accounts will be there. It is a real nice app with very low battery consumption.
The free version is very limited. I use the ultimate version and I'm rather happy with it. I don't want to schedule traffic when my phone is idle, but that would be a massive battery saver.
Yes, you can set different settings for each app in the paid versions. You can set a trigger that makes sure your internet is always on when meego is running, even when your screen is off.
But overall, I have no problem to use my phone for more than 12 hours on battery with moderate usage. Maybe you should send your device back anyway.
I had terrible battery drain as well but ive managed to resolve this. have you tried:
1. Deleting all social hub accounts?
2. Deleting your mail account if you use the stock mail app?
3. Updated to latest official firmware?
I was experiencing 10% idle drain per hour. Now i'm at 1-2%. Battery life is a huge improvement compared to my old desire. Dont guve up on this phone.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
In my experience standard battery drain per hour should be
1~2% screen off / data off
3~5% screen off / data on
12~15% screen on / data off
18~20% screen on / data on
WiFi uses less battery than 3g but as you can see display is main problem...

Sounds like you need to clear your battery history, leave it over night, then check what's been using it overnight to me.
I have 5-10% drop at most overnight (7 hours or so).

Also try clearing data on the software update app. That appeared to work for some people. U definitely have a rogue app eating your battery... Can you give us a list of your running processes immediately after you restart?

So after using Juice defender ultimate for a couple weeks now, with the customizable apps configuration, I see no improvement in battery life.
I lost 50% charge overnight with just push email on (stock gmail app), only synching email and contacts.
For those with this app, what configurations are you using to improve the battery?

I have it setup to turn the data, and wifi off while the screen is off.
Night mode is enabled, from 11:30, to 7:00am
I also have it only allow wifi via location, work or home.
It eats 1-2% while in standby per hour.
and about 3-4% overnight.
i tried juice defender ultimate and it made no difference. I deleted it just because its another app working in the background...
I found it to be very effective when set up correctly. Lose less than 1% an hour at idle.

Mine does that (1-2% per hour at idle) without Juicedefender and push email/facebook active. The problem with JD is also that when set to switch off Wifi and data in the background when the phone is idle, it doesn't always switch them back on after the phone awakens, resulting in many pain in the ass moments.
I bought it 6 months ago and never use it any more.

Pretty standard really wifi and mobile data enabled (ultimate version), autosync on ping, 15 minute scheduled check for 30s. I don't have it turn off data at night because the phone is usually plugged in and have data enabled when the screen is on. It also manages the wifi locations so usually it only connects to wifi.

Getting 3 to 4hrs + screen time

Hi i have read a number of posts in which people have showed or said that they are getting 3 to 4hrs of actual screen time, i am currently using aokp, i have used a number of kernals but cant get anywhere near this amount of usage. My phone sleeps perfectly fine, i have cpuspy and better battery stats and there is nothing that really stands out besides mipi_link in better battery stats. I have a standard gsm battery and would like to know how much screen time other people are getting and how?

#1 difference is screen brightness, for me. I was running full blast and could barely get a couple hours in. Now I can use it for a few hours and be fine. Seems obvious, sure, but the screen is simply a hungry beast.
Brightness ... You need to turn it as low as you could accept and use.
I set mine to 15%, set using Widgetsoid.
And it is bright enough for my liking.
Here is mine, 4 and a half screen on time while connected to 3g all the time, with 37 hours standby time.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21697551&postcount=58
If using wifi, I could get 4 hours with 61 hours standby.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21697619&postcount=59
I use my phone mainly for web browsing, facebook, gplus, xda apps, navigation, youtube, games, call, sms, whatsapp, just normal stuff. Mostly the first four above.
On extended gsm battery, the genuine 2000mah from Samsung.
Also note that I dont sync, not at all. For me, it is not necessary, because I tend to hit refresh button everytime which defeat the purpose of sync.
I am satisfied with this usage pattern and battery life.

Well i have gmail syncing and facebook, i cant have exchange sync or other apps like whatsapp as they start to kill my battery, i also have my brightness very low, i dont think im doing anything different to anyone else. I can get through the day with sacrificing a few things on my phone.
I leave my syncing all the time, have brightness turned up to about 70% and I get 3-4 hrs of screen time no problem.
I am running GummyNex with the kernel that comes with it. I believe the main difference is to flash the new radios. MUCH improved!

I don't like Facebook sync either, people tend to put silly photos there.
I want the real face of my friends on my contact list, chosen by me
I do sync contact, manually right after I updated the list or added a new one.
I also sync calendar as needed, after change. I am in control here, I know when I change it.
And of course, I use WhatsApp as well

Sure, you can have that no problem. But how long is your standby time?
If you search in the general forum, someone made some tests already.
At max brightness, white color, you can get 5 hours more screen on time. With black, you can get 10 hours. Straight.
With lowest brightness and white color, you can also get 10 hours.
That's your min and max.

If i turn brightness down too much screen looks too grainy..not sure how you guys do 15%?
What is the best rom/kernel for battery life?
I see a lot of different combos, but I am desperate, today alone 50% battery left with 35 minutes on screen time.
Yes my brightness is max, so I guess I will play with it, but anything below 50% brightness looks really bad
I got 14 hours yesterday with 50% brightness and about 3 hours of screen time.
Try this.
If you are on GSM, then try GSM only.

how do you get the "GSM only" setting to stick? mine keeps resetting to GSM/CDMA.

What is the best rom/kernel for battery life?

Try changing it to around 30%, 15% is too low for me as well. 30% is as low as I'm willing to go.
Also, what widgets do you have running? A lot of these 3rd party widgets cause serious drainage!
I get 3 hours screen time on 3g, 4 on wifi. GSM Nexus with stock battery, gonna get extended when they arrive here.
Standby time is not a problem for me, discharging very slowly, aokp #20 and GLaDos kernel.
Never did anything all that cpu intensive. Would say it was relatively light usage, to be perfectly honest. An hour or so of calls, quite a few messages, 30 mins browsing, no games, etc. Still, I'm very impressed with the screen on time.
Extended battery, aokp w/leankernel, undervolted, sync on, wifi on, 30% backlight.
I need to put a rom and kernel to get better battery life I think, just cant figure out which one, too many to choose which I guess is a good thing

Tips and tricks: improve JB idle battery life.

Confirm the following option is unchecked:
Maps/Settings/Location settings/Report from this device.
If it is checked, uncheck it.
Here's the difference in battery life -
About half the battery drain with the option unchecked.
Thanks for the tip

What are you talking about? Did you zoom in to see screen on/awake usage? Both are about 7.5 hours of idle time.
I updated my phone to JB and followed the battery saving measures and the battery is dropping very quickly.
Before it could last up to 3 days in standby, now I'll be surprised if it lasts 8 hours.
I'll give it another day then try a factory reset if it does not improve.
Anybody else seeing this?
I have watchdog on the phone and it shows zero cpu off time.
Just install better battery stats, there is also a way to dump the same info in terminal but I don't use it. You are looking for alarms apps cause. It's most likely maps, followed by talk, exchange client, or anything like Twitter, FB,g+,stocks.... but most likely maps location settings

I have been doing a lot of research and the end result is that JB out of the box will eat your battery and yes disabling the settings under maps does in fact help a lot but there is a lot more you can do to get good life... for starters get the simple stuff out of the way, DELETE FACEBOOK MOBILE APP!!!...and twitter and anything that actively accesses the internet in the background... I know this may sound taxing but it is so worth it if yiu just make a bookmark in your browser and view it periodically than have an always active app... next if you are not in a primarily lte covered area set your phone to cdma only... go into settings and go to data usage and here you can see what is using data in the background I.e. facebook... and go there and check the restrict app box.., disable auto brightness and some have said that if you disable sprint connection manager thing you can do even more.... now that one I cannot be sure about I will post results in the coming days of what I find

You are pretty much correct the FB app sucks but I never really had much problems with it.
A lot of these tips though in general (not directed towards you) are stupid.
Like someone said a while ago I refuse to gimp my phone to sip a little bit more life out of it. What's the use of having a smartphone if you're not going to use it like one.
I always have high brightness unless its dark out. I broke my syncs intervals up to about 4 hours per sync and have push notifications from twitter and weather.
With those apps all I have to do is refresh when I enter the app having those syncing all the time is worthless unless you're constantly checking every 10 seconds.
I say I get fairly decent battery life granted I'm on wifi most the time and 7-8 hours with about 2 hrs screen on playing HD games youtube poweramp and my background processes.
Well in regards to the act of extending the life of your battery these are simply tips that you can utilize in the event you are someone who is out for extreme amounts of time.... I average anywhere from 13 to 17 hrs of battery life with 100% brightness, wifi 3g all of my favorite apps... instagram xda kik kindle Skype etc. And 5 to 6 hrs of screen on time. .. so these gimping tactics more than double my phones live time and doubles my life.... but hey if you can get to a charger after 8hrs by all means but for the most part I cannot until after 13 but i do in fact appreciate your incite
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
Also even though you are disabling sone of these apps like google now.... you can still use it your just turning off the background nonsense

Even with changing that setting in Maps I still am not getting the same battery life as I did with ICS. Maps is still coming up as my most used app when I check battery usage even though I rarely use it. Wonder if it may be Google Now causing Maps to keep running.

Oh wow. Sorry from my phone I couldn't zoom in. I see now lol. Thought I saw 90 and 89 or something like that
I had the Maps setting turned off for a few days and also had A LOT of stuff disabled, but unfortunately my battery life (and my wife's as well) wasn't as good as ICS, and quite a bit worse actually.
Sadly, today, it looks like I figured out what the killer is:
Google Now.
This morning, 100% charged, I turned it off. My wife (who still had it on) and I were out and about together for about four hours, we both barely used out phones for that time. When we got home I checked both phones: I was at 96%, she was at 80%.
The only difference that I hadn't already accounted for:
Google Now.
So, unfortunately, it looks to me like one of the two biggest reasons for wanting JB in the first place (Butter being the other of course) turns out to be a big battery hog I don't yet know if there's maybe some setting within it that is a specific problem or if it's the whole thing in general... maybe you just need to disable a card or change an update frequency or something (I didn't touch any so I'm running whatever the defaults are), I don't know yet... but all indications are that's where the problem lies.
That, my friends, sucks.
Well since my phone has calmed down I am getting 13-16 hr easily. Brightness maxed of course and about 4-6 screen on time I will never cripple my phone. Hell I bought it so I can use not to look at. Lol thanks for the post of this though if I'm ever I. A die hard , situation I'll know what to do

Google Now uses the "Report from this device" and "Enable location history" maps location settings to determine your driving patterns so it can suggest alternative routes and report traffic delays. Disabling "Enable location history" will disable the driving pattern suggestions completely.
FWIW Settings | More settings | Mobile networks | Network mode
Changing from "CDMA" to "LTE / CDMA" has gained me better battery life. My wife also noticed the same.
(To save time, I'm cutting & pasting my post from another similar thread.)

"I have had my Galaxy S3 for a week now. Battery life stabilized after the initial syncing, etc. I updated to Jelly Bean v4.1.1 two days ago, and battery life didn't seem noticeably different. However, that was until today. My phone was off of the charger, around 10AM, and had < 5% charge by 4:30PM. I was very busy, so I was hardly using the phone all day. It was in my pocket or on my desk most of the time. One of the only settings I changed last night, was enabling 'Use wireless networks' and enabling 'Location and Google search' under 'Location Services' in 'Settings'. I just disabled both settings, and will see if the battery drain is any less tomorrow. Also, Google Now was off, and was never enabled on my phone. I'll try to post the results, if at all possible..."
So, for me, it seems to be Location Services may have caused my poor battery life, and was definitly not Google Now, as it was never enabled. I'll try using the phone with the settings off, and see if that changes anything...

I do love Jelly Bean; as it is ICS only improved or enhanced. But battery life has definitely taken a hit. I can barely make it through 24 hrs. On ICS I could do a day and a half to two days with really light use. I've tried just about everything mentioned with little change. Good thing I have an extra battery. Thank you Samsung for making a phone with a user replaceable battery.
Thanks for all the ideas/suggestions anyways,
El Mono
I noticed the huge difference as well. I was walking around Chicago yesterday and not using my phone. After 4 hours I looked and my battery was at 50 %.

Battery concept?

Can someone please help me understand a battery concept I'm having trouble finding out. So right now I have 80% of battery left, and only 40 minutes screen on time. Isn't that really poor? I'm a moderate user, so I just text, go on twitter or instagram and this app.
Here's where I have trouble understanding the battery; other days I would have an hour of screen on time but the only way I get there is to use my phone non stop. Shouldn't the times be the same?? Or is a lot of battery being drained when my screen is off?
Here is more useful information:
I disabled location services in Google now, I have smart stay, air gesture, air view, and multi window on. I'm almost always on wifi. My brightness is around 45% - 50%. My phone doesn't get hot, and I am running version 6/10 of ktoonsez kernel.
I have Greenify installed and I Greenify'd maps, Google search, Samsung watch on and Samsung apps, and other apps that use to run in the background.
I followed a guide to unchecked stuff that said "checking" in Google services framework, in startups, in system tuner.
What am I doing wrong?

That would get you close to 3.5 hrs of screen time on a single charge. Thats not too bad for medium brightness and having wifi on all day. I would say thats about average and you could probably push 4 hours on lower brightness which is about standard for this phone.

Most of those stats are with people who have disabled things like Google Services, Greenify everything, Dont run Wifi or LTE all day, have power saver enabled all day, etc. I would say your pretty good. Its the screen which is the real killer on this device

Keep in mind that screen on time isn't the only measure of the battery use. Voice calls are also a huge battery drainer.
You are thinking about battery life properly by doing it in terms of how much use you are getting and not how long between charges. Screen on time is only half that equation though. Consider it in terms of Screen on time plus voice calls time.
Just for future reference though I know what guide you followed (because I wrote it). So since your questions directly follow the changes made in that guide, a new thread wasn't really needed. Using that thread to keep all your thoughts organized in the same place is best for the entire XDA community so people who read that thread can see your issues and learn from them too. Remember an XDA thread's value is not just in the first post. It's in all the knowledge that comes in the conversation that follows.
