Hi all,
im new to this forum and i would just like to say reading this forum is most of a time a pain due to the amount of useless posting an irrelevant noise on most threads
alot of these threads with 20+ pages could really be alot more concise holding only relevant or important tech info.
it just seems you have to read page after page filtering out 90% of the posts for that 10% of tech goodness.
i guess what im hoping for is more nazi admin type behaviour or at least more flaming from the more senior members of the community, Im sure this is a problem all over these forums but it would be good if less crap was posted in the hermes sections.
And you post this off-topic rant in the WM6 forum?
Man, the irony is killing me.
i was referring to post not threads but now that you mention it theres alot of **** threads too.
what is irony and how do i install it.
First make sure your attention is properly connected to this thread. Then download and install Irony v2.0! It's obviously better than 1.2 and fixes alot of these error posts. lol

Actually, if you knew better you would realize that the first post was ironic, your post is just lame sarcasm.
Great way to introduce yourself to the forum. By the way.
See, that is useful sarcasm.

Here's the problem.. How to deal with n00bs that don't know how to read:
1) Lock the thread.
* If you lock the thread, we'll simply get duplicated posts from the same person asking (obviously), "Why did you lock my post about the keyboard issue?!? I *still* can't get the keyboard to work right!"
2) Delete the posts/threads
* If you delete it, you'll get the same duplicated reaction as above. Plus, the requisite *****ing about how they feel hard-done-to because they were singled out! And, besides.. They were just helping others who had the same keyboard issue as them; after all, it's not posted anywhere else on the site!
3) Flame the crap out of them
* Humiliation works. If you humiliate people into submission, prior to posting on the forums, a to-be-useful member of this site will spend the time and read the collected knowledge that is to be found on here. Read and show any of us that you've even *tried* to understand, and you'll get a nice, helpful answer. Post stupidity, you'll get attacked. It's pretty easy.
Now I know who to direct my BRICKED-ANTI-PERSONEL-DEVICE when the time comes.

ROFLMFAO
I can agree with "bleeding_edge" to a certain extent.
Posts that resemble something like "Installing now", "Man, I just installed {insert 1-version-older rom here}", and my fav "Downloading now 20% done" (I just wish they would post every time the percent went up, that would really keep me better informed).
On the other hand today is April 3rd and "bleeding_edge" joined in April of 2007... so to be a member for 2 days and suggest that everyone be meaner to members from now on probably wont get you any friends here.
I think that everyone who makes post like the examples above should simply be shot, in the face.
Actually I think that they don't intend on flooding a thread, its just their excitement showing through. So perhaps if you are someone who makes posts like the ones I have above, and your reading this post, you could simply try to keep your posts relevant/on topic.
Later, Lew
i agree with the admin that it cant really be controlled without backlash,
the only thing that comes to mind is revoking posting rights from those who consistenly post unconstructive unhelpful crap. i could easily name 50 people who post in this section with nothing of use to anyone.
every thread contains crap its just here theres alot higher ratio of useless wow look at my post count banter in comparison to normal dev forums.
or pehaps the idea of not allowing people to post anything within the first month period of creating an account.
although my account in new and fresh i have been reading this board for a while, thus the cause for my outrageous noob style rant
i appologise to any long standing members this has offended i just feel its borderline out of control and something really should be said/done
closed this thread, very good points, but made a new thread and its a sticky...
I have received a surprising number of PMs in response to my App thread [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=973921] from newbies who say they are PMing because they are unable to reply to threads. One even said he couldn't post till he had 10 posts (how the heck could he get 10 posts if he can't post?). I thought newbies couldn't post links for a certain period or number of posts... but I have slept since then and the site has changed some.
What gives? I read the FAQ and all I found was that in most forums you have to be a registered member to reply or post new topics. Are these newbies just mistaken about the rules, if so is there some way to better explain the posting rules?

We have an informative notice to users when they try to do this.
New users (<10 posts) can't post in development areas. What you could do, is make a "support" thread outwith development. The problem was that we were getting thousands of pointless posts from people in development areas, causing endless trouble in moving them and dealing with the flaming that continued...
Once they have 10 posts outwith development areas, they can post in dev forums within 1 hour of that time. A support thread outwith that section, with a prominant link in the first post might help, and it's the method I will be using myself.

Thanks, that certainly explains it... great suggestion.

Must follow the rules, thank you.
I have the same issue and found out about the 10 posts rule, yet something confused me, a "new member" (Labeled as Junior Member" was able to post in the development area for a Rom thread with only having >5 posts. I saw two posts of his in this thread and he only had total of 4 posts...I tried to post in the same thread and wasn't allowed to because i have fewer than 10 post...oh and his post is only a day or two old.. what gives??
noted ...sir
This stupid rule forces me too post in pointless threads for me. It's just too much hassle to post in threads you really don't care about just to be able to post in your desired development thread.

The recommended way is to post in Q&A instead of development, and I tried it. Obviously no one from the development thread is going to be informed of my post automagically, so I went on contacting the kernel dev, leading to the same situation as the OP, meaning an unwanted PM to a busy dev...
Yeah I don't want to keep bugging deva through pm. Only reason for me to post in other threads.

I perfectly agree with you, sir, and find the present thread particularly handy in that respect. Of course, I would never post anything just for the sake of reaching a post count of 10, but it appears that light conversation about the ins and outs and philosophy of the XDA rules does help towards that goal, isn't it wonderful?
And hooooo didn't I just discover another thoughtful anti-noob restriction ? It appears that, in order to increase my verbia... to increase the quality, grammar and punctuation of posts, and more importantly, to avoid easy mass spamming, XDA requires non-mod-approved users to wait a total of five minutes between two posts. Specifically, the following message appears:
To prevent spam to the forums, new users must wait five minutes between posts. All new user accounts will be verified by moderators before this restriction is removed.

(HA, yes, I admit that I am just training to use the quote function here, and that the above snippet of text does not bring much to the conversation, but eh, isn't it a positive side effect of the anti-noob-spam rule, that I get to train proper formatting of posts?)

So it's a limitation of new posters when using the XDA app, probably.
Yes its a limitation....by the way this is my first post.... 1/10

Congratulations on your first post, komusic.
I shall also note that the 5 minutes between posts limitation makes that a minimum of 50 minutes is necessary for anyone to reach the infamous tenposts milestone after which the golden doors of the dev forums posting will open under our ungrateful greasy little noobish fingers. Hence, this is also a test of patience. We shall consider ourselves monks, in fact. Apprentices.
So can anyone explain why a member with >10 posts can post in the development area? The posts are recent, just yesterday and the day before
Really Really wish that XDA would lock everyday peeps from posting in ROM threads.
No matter how many times it is said, seems most do not follow directions then ask why, or ask if they do need to follow directions, or ask why some BS app like netflicks wont work with a different carrier on new ROM.
250 pages of posts and 248 are spam and crap from peeps that evidently should nopt be messing with their phones in the first place.
Sigh ok I feel better now....
What is the point in stopping the users of ROMs from posting about them?
I agree with the above posting, if you deny people from posting their questions, what they learned, what oddity they discovered in a new rom.......... well then, you stymie progress. And, after all isn't THAT what these forums are about? improving our experience and improving our learning ?
If you really look at ROM threads these day there is very little good information or even helpfull information being posted by the masses.
Create a spam thread for the ROM in general, and GOOD information can be transfered to the actual ROM thread in the Dev section.
Everyone is told to search and read first, and I have spent the last few years doing that with out having the need to repost questions that have already been posted. But I will admit that lately with as much growth as this sight has had, Threads are being crapped up so bad it makes it hard to do so, leading to a vicious circle.
Seriously in one ROM thread alone you have 280+ pages now in a fairly new thread, and 270 of the pages are junk posts.
and now how can i download new updates to americandroid rom???
Posting, not downloading.
So we know this is a problem, and we're willing to go to great lengths to protect the development parts of the site as per the announcement.
It's a tough balance, but we think restricting new replies for those with under 10 posts, and new threads for those with under 50 posts will help a lot.

That could work. It really doesn't take long to post 50 times.
There has been a severe surge in noob activity and the search function has lost all use as they do not use it.
We get 10000000000000 threads all about the same problem.
There must be a way of getting them in control.
The worst is noobs in dev threads as they don't know **** and there for fill dev threads with utter spam and trash.
Help us obiwan kenobi your our only hope.
What if we make it so that you can "down-vote" replies, similar to reporting, and when 3-5 people down-vote the same post or user, it removes/hides the post and bans the user from posting in the thread for a period of time, while displaying a message saying so.

That's why I said 3-5 votes and also banned from posting in that thread for a period of time (ie 15 minutes). If we, the responsible members can't be trusted with something this simple, then there's no hope of fixing this.

i think it would be a good idea if a new session was made...that session will be a playground for all spammers and timewasters to play around always in the rules...
as i am in some other forums too i noticed that there is a session where you could post as many post you want but it wasnt count as post(for example if i have 100 posts and post 10 in this session i will have still 100 posts){that forum was v-bulletin too ,so ithink is possible for this forum too}
also this session will be good opportunity to clear the off topic session for threads like ban the person above you , youtube thread ,kill the person above you and others(also an opportunity to make more of this), so the off topic session will be used for discusssion.
i post that thought of mine because i think it will help the forum!!!
hope you will find my suggestion usefull!!!!!!
cheers
We do have the Off Topic Section, but the posts do count in there.
This is definitely something to think about. I'll run it up the flag pole.

I've seen some of the guys that frequent off-topic ask for it to not count towards posts quite a few times actually - you'll definitely get support for this. It's a sociable place where people get to know each other a bit better than the device forums, and it does get frustrating when new members decide to use it as a spamming arena to get their post count up.
+1 to this.

We had touched upon this a few times in fact. Good to see that we are not alone in our line of thought
I have been following xda for over two years now but have never joined until a week ago. I have donated a lot of money to various developers and roms offer that time. But only through paypal and email. I have been afraid to join the forum as with my knowledge of Android then, i would only sound like an idiot. There needs to be a streamlined way to get rid of spammers while not discouraging noobs from learning. This can be Done by implementing the above ideas but i believe because of human nature and the fact xda has grown massively, there is no proven method to exclude perpetrators. Tyke main problem is that people cannot gauge their own level of expertise and so they stumble along, get flamed and essentially become spammers out of spite. When some person joins initially they should enter a primary site where their actions can be judged over a period of time. One their trial is complete they can then join the main xda forum. Moderators could focus their time and energy on this trial site and will find their jobs made easier and the main site free of moronic comments. Anyways, this can solve many of your problems and existing members would also refrain from breaking the rules because they will fear the drudgery of the trial site. I have seriously leant tons from the awesome people and knowledgeable developers here on xda. Thank you all and i look forward to supporting you until i am old and grey.

Well, I agree. The OT section is many times used as a spam section. There are many topics there which could be combined but they say hey, its off topic so theycan post whatever they want wherever.
When did XDA members start taking themselves so seriously! This site USED to be fun, now it's full of tight asses who like to see their words on the screen. A far cry from the days that I joined XDA to learn about custom ROMs on my beloved HTC Hero (CDMA).
Somehow it appears that the amount of posts a person has next to their name gives them the right to be jerks. Some Members and Moderators like to troll just to find a reason to bust someone's balls.
"Why all this *****ing Bruce777?" You may ask.
I don't post much but I've been around for a couple of years. The catalyst was a thread that some member posted in the general section. He made a new thread and was thanking the DEVs for the 4.4 slimkat Rom; it was closed and the MOD deemed it "not helpful" or some such nonsense. And to top it all off he was a **** about it!
I read it, I liked it. In fact it made me think "wow i guess the 4.4 roms are further along than I thought."
I know, I know, a new thread wasn't necessary but it was posted in "General"! Historically, a sounding board forum, it actually has "chat" in the description. This member has 3 posts in 3 years!! He/she is obviously someone who doesn't "clutter" up the forums.
Any-whoo......
Thanks for listening; I feel MUCH better!
Post count, title, reputation - it doesn't matter. We're all here for the same thing. Nobody has the right to belittle anyone or act like they are better than the next person. We're all here to help one another. Every once in a while you will come across that odd-ball who likes to stir up trouble. Use the report button for those posts and let the moderation team handle it.
As expected... thread closed.
