I can not find this info anywhere. Most likely I can't do this. I would like to use my old EVO like this macbook>stream to EVO>HDMI cable>TV. If this can be done, can it be HD?
And this is why questions go in the Q&A forum.

Hello, I have a few dummy Evo 4gs. Not active on cell network
I want to use it to play YouTube videos on my big screen led with HDMI.
Can someone point me to a working ron that does HDMI output mirroring?
Ideally I would like a fully baked rom. Something I can flash and HDMI mirroring will work for YouTube playing.
Anyone got any recommendations?

Why would you stream from your macbook to your evo and then to the TV instead of doing the Macbook straight to the TV?? You can stream from a macbook straight to the tv OR from your evo straight to the TV but not both
I would also like to use my old EVO as a media center. I know XBMC is fairly android-friendly these days. Download and install an APK.
I went and bought a new micro-HDMI cable on Amazon so in a few days and I'll post back with my findings.
My EVO is currently running a CM7 nightly from November.

just use plex or xbmc to get things streaming to the phone
once it streams to the phone, all you need to do is download an app called hdmi win from the market, start hdmi win, start your plex/xbmc app, plug the phone into the tv, boom you're good
the audio is always a little funky though
I got my HDMI cable in and installed XBMC. Using the program HDMIWIN I am able to mirror the device to my TV. The settings allow me to output to the TV at 1280x720 and the TV confirms that it is receiving a 720P signal. In the settings of the XBMC app, I am not able to change the resolution at all from 800x400. The phone itself is stuck at it's native resolution so I don't know if it is actually sending a 720P picture along the wire.
I am thinking that for standard definition media, this would be a good use of a retired EVO but if you're looking for any HD goodness, you'll probably have to use a different device.

I'm hoping that things likst snesoid and such go theough hdmi out /pray
From looking at the SDK, it would appear that the HDMI output needs to be explicitly called so the good news is that anyone can get their app to output to the HDMI. The bad news is that probably nothing other than some of the stock / featured apps right now will probably work with it on launch day.
Just curious if HTC enabled the UI and some of the other apps to use it.
oh my god, haha that would be sick, imagine having snesoid nesoid gensoid gbcoid all in your phone then pop out an hdmi cable, hook it up to your 50" tv and then pull out a wiimote and start playing, talk about gettin an iPhone user mad... hahaha...

I ordered my HDMI cable so I'll tell ya'll when I get it. My assumption is only video but I also assume that we could probably find a way to add a feature to the system to output the entire system and UI. XDA has the best of the best here so I'm sure we can do it.

huh? but HDMI carries sound.. Maybe they changed it so it won't put it out through HDMI and only through the audio jack.

HDMI supports sound. I have my evo but dont have the cable. The videos I have seen on youtube have sound when streaming to tv.
web browsing on tv
while i dont have an evo myself im really excited about and wish theyd have a gsm version. but anyways.. my dream is to be able to have web browsing pouring out the hdmi cable into a large tv screen.. go to a website wtih streaming video and watch it on the tv instead of being huddled around a small screen.. BONUS.. take it anywhere you want and have the power of a laptop with a bluetooth fold up keyboard.. just my thoughts.
I just received my hdmi cable. First thing I did was try to do a search before posting a thread. My problem is apparantly video goes to my TV fine but there's NO SOUNDDD. This is both in youtube and the video player. If anyone knows of a fix please let me know.
Ok got sound to work on my other TV, but no sound in the living room tv. So just to update if sound isn't working its probably the TV and not the cable.
Has any advance been made on this? I was originally under the imression that the full screen would just always get sent to the tv... was very disappointed to figure out otherwise. Especially since nesoid et all don't support it T_T
What exactly can I play with HDMI out? I have some .avi movies that I use arcMedia to play. If I just connect my HDMI and play it will it show up on my tv? Or does it have to be a specific format to play?
As of now, the only things you can output are gallery pictures (slideshow mode only), youtube, and any videos the stock app will play. so your avi's most likely wont play over hdmi.
Does anyone know if you can use the slingplayer app with the hdmi output?

Is anyone working on a fix for this?
Is it just me or did it seem like in the Sense2 'preview' given at the HTC show that someone linked earlier today HTC claimed you could use your TV as a screen for your phone? I believe the quote was something along the lines of, 'what shows up on your phone, shows up on the tv'. They didn't go into any further details, and they were talking about watching videos when they said it. However, if true video out capabilities are included in Sense2, that would be pretty bad ass. Something to keep an eye out for when it finally hits!
You can steam movies from this site (iphonemoviez.net/blog/) and use hdmi to watch on tv (wouldn't let me post full link but I'm sure you guys get it)
I don't think its full ui out yet.. Just wireless streaming of vid and pix...
I wonder though what they using to stream to the tv from the phone.. As well as what requirements the tv needs..

I use SPB TV app from android market. It is able to stream live ~100 inet channels to HDMI. Reviews are mixed though. And it costs 10 backs for android while free for iPhone, WTF. Not that it worth to pay for given so-so quality and the channel selection could have been better.

I have an EVO 4g & an HDMI cable. However, not sure how to get the video from the video to appear on the TV..
Hook small end of the hdmi cable into phone, then plug into tv, change the channel. Lol. Every tv has different settings so its going to be on one of the main like the channel you play games on or use it for cable or what. Just flip through your channel settings and make sure to check if anything poped up on your phone about it
On my tv anyway, I have to select input, then hdmi 3. Yours will depend on which hdmi hookup you used.

Are you stock, what ROM are you using?
---------- Post added at 03:56 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:48 PM ----------
Do you have an HDMI cable or a micro HDMI cable? (does one end fit into the phone?)
If your using a stock ROM with a stock kernel you will only be able to display video from youtube and the video app. To mirror the display from your phone you will need to flash a different kernel. This is assuming that you are rooted of corse. I like the plane old poonsense 2.2.3 kernel. Maybe there are better kernels out there, but this one has never given me any problems. I've tried others and they didn't play well with my phone. Get kernel manager in the play store, or marker or whatever it's called now. It will give you a list of compatible kernels for your phone.

The best evo kernel is lionfish. It has hdmi mirroring and great battery life. Made for sense roms

You need to have a kernel that supports hdmi out, not sure if that rom/kernel will work. The stock rom definitely works, as far as I know all custom kernels from the latest OTA don't have it working.
What app are you trying to stream from? You may need an HDMI mirroring app.
I am trying to watch sum movies thru QQ player. Is there a better video player on the market? Where can I get an HDMI mirroring app? I really dont want to go back to stock ROM...MIUI has been great.
bump anyone?
If you do not want to go back to stock entirely, investigate some of the dual boot methods. You can boot into another ROM watch your vids and boot back into Miui.
Can do the same without the dual boot specific steps by setting up the ROM that will play vids and nandroiding it,etc

If you want to do HDMI mirroring, I think you have to go back to a froyo 2.2 rom and use TeamWin HDMI mirroring app and kernel. Froyo is the last rom I heard that works on, I haven't seen anything that they got it working on GB.
What is the easiest and fastest way to get HDMI working? What ROMs supports it?
Any cm7 based rom works. Decks reloaded works amazing with HDMI.
Download the hdmwin app from the market and grant super user permission. Also download the v8 deamon that comes with it. Set the settings to route audio, CPU to max, keep screen on and make sure you plug it in when you are mirroring. You will need to restart after the initial settings of the settings. Plug in select mirror and if doesn't work right away take the cable out and plug it in again. It can be stubborn sometimes.
I use it all the time while having the evo synced to a wiimote to control it.
platinumPenguin i tried using HDMI win but it doesnt work..How did you get it working? ANd what is v8 deamon i dont see it in the market??

Before you can even do Miracast, I believe CyanogenMod needs to support it, I haven't seen anything in Gerrit to support that Miracast has been added into 4.2 yet.
In theory there also has to be Miracast support for your device released (which Samsung has released, but I guarantee you that the drivers for it are closed source or outdated like everything else Samsung seems to do with the development community.) Keep in mind, just because it is supported by the OS doesn't mean it is supported by your phone. If it was Stock 4.2 (Samsung Stock) on your SGSIII then yes, Miracast would be implemented. Since it isn't, CyanogenMod has no obligations, nor guarantees that they will include that.

Except, that's not true. Some newer TV's support WiFi Direct screen mirroring, his TV might support it (I didn't look it up) if it does support the WiFi Direct Screen Mirroring (WiDi, now known as Miracast) then Samsung's Mirroring software would work if his device was stock, same thing with an LG Nexus 4 also running stock, or a Laptop.

Think about it like this, say you have a movie on your phone that you want to bring to your Buddy's house, but he doesn't have it, and his TV supports MiraCast....BAM, push the movie to the TV, everyone can watch on a large screen.
Or say you have a presentation on your phone, and the TV supports Miracast, no longer are you locked in one place by your laptop, but you can wirelessly stream the presentation to your projector.

That Allshare app is just a control point. The Actual AllShare app for DLNA requires TW frameworks which don't exist in CM. For DLNA/UPnP use BubbleUPnP. If you want to just push music look into DoubleTwist.

No worries man, it's better to ask questions and learn than never learn anything.
I'm glad I got my Amazon Fire TV, it's working out really well, especially for XBMC.
However, one key thing I'm missing now (since I sold my Apple TV) is the ability to Airplay Mirror. I was looking for an alternative in reading some of the posts we have so far. I came across someone successfully using Air Receiver, but I wasn't able to get access to the APK.
At any rate, if anyone has any thing they've done to successfully get an Airplay Mirror alternative to work, I'd love to hear about it. Thanks.
I believe some people are using AllCast. I haven't tried it yet, but it seems to be working fine.
I'm looking for something similar but will allow multiple people on the network to send YouTube videos into a queue on the FireTV from their phones. This is all I use the Chromecast for now and I'm trying to eliminate the need for the Chromecast.
Edit: Apparently AllCast does YouTube queuing like the Chromecast. Sweet.

There is no way to currently cast a chrome browser tab or the computer screen to it like you can with Chromecast. I need that ability and still use the Chromecast for it. Otherwise, I would have removed the Chromecast and just gone with the FireTV. I currently have both.
I see that allcast could work, but it doesn't support mirroring which is really what I'm after.
Spelvin, I can try what you've suggested. I'm not sure how to get the apk to the fire tv though, I can't get apk's off my phone, I'm not rooted. Guess I'll have to root.
