[Q] date and time keep resetting - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi All.
My phone loses connectivity to the internet once every day or so and I finally figured out that the date and time are being reset somehow. The time is several hours off, and the date resets to 1968 or 69. Something crazy. Once I tell it to not sync automatically and set the date and time manually, i regain connectivity to the internet and things are good for a while, but it seems to always happen again.
I'm on a Samsung Galaxy SIII with ATT. I have rooted it and am using the latest 10.1 Cyanogen mod nightly build and am keeping fairly up to date with them although the problem has been there even with the Stable version of 10.0.
Any ideas? The phone is less than 2 weeks old, so it would be nice to know if i got a lemon before I can't take it back anymore.
Thanks!
Drew

Hey,
I'm having the same issue. I am with Bell, using AOKP.
Did you ever get this solved? Does anyone know anything about dealing with this? My phone won't get any signal unless I do the same idea (no signal at boot -> turn off auto date/time -> reboot, set manually, get signal, switch to auto

Problems with date and time changing by itself

I am having problems with my new Tmo S3 with the date and time changing on me on a couple of occasions, which is dangerous! I who rely on time so much! Would an app be causing that? I haven't gotten any apps that would do such a thing that I know... Any body out there has experienced the same issue? It changed/reset it to January 1st 2012.
On settings/date and time; I have automatic date and time (Use network-provided time), Automatic time zone (unchecked)...
Even if it wasn't connected to the network, my phone should be resetting the time everytime it wasn't on 3g or wifi! I never experienced this before even on my ATT Galaxy S2. I have a rooted, Stock ICS and Kernel.

[Q] WiFi Constant Download

Having a problem with my WiFi, it is constant on the WiFi download arrow. I have checked the usage with data manager and it seems to be OS Services. I updated to Jelly Bean 3 days via Kies. It was fine the first day and since yesterday I have been having this problem as well as my brother who has a S3 who updated OTA. I started diagnosing the problem and it seems to stop if I disconnect every computer in the house. As soon as I connect one of them no matter which one the constant download arrow returns. This is also happening at my school without my computer there. Had the phone since July never had a problem. Any ideas for a fix?
Btw this is a Rogers I747.

Hopefully somebody figures something out. I had a similar issue with ICS, but it was Doubletwist Airsync forcing my wifi setting to always now. Not sure what is going on now. But if it's doing what you say with the computers, maybe it has something to do with WiFi direct or something.
I have even factory reset and it was still doing it before I even loaded anything on to the phone. Is there a way I can completely fresh install the OS?
Any time I look at my wifi (In both ICS and JB) I have an almost constant download arrow, but only on WiFi.
If I turn wifi off my data does not do the same thing. I downloaded a network monitor and found that even over an hour of idle the phone had only downloaded a few kilobytes of info. Like you said, it was for OS services or something OS related.
I just assume it's some kind of ping that the phone has to do so the router doesn't disconnect it? I'm not overly sure how WiFi works. After seeing no significant decrease in battery life I stopped worrying about it.
Its just odd that 3 months + I have had this phone it never happened. Now all of the sudden this is happening to two phones after the a day after the jellybean update.
sorry to bring this up again, but has anyone found the issue or solution?
My GN 10.1 has this same issue.
I'm sure this is a nice battery drainer.

[Q] losing wifi connectivity- full bars but all gray

so, I've read around here on the XDA forum about problems with wifi connectivity where we have full bars for wifi but they are gray and you are not getting out. many describe my situation but I've not seen any real solutions...
my problem is that I can connect to my wifi router without issue but then a random amount of time later, sometimes fairly quickly and sometimes it's hours later, I will pick up the phone and see full bars but they are gray and I'm not getting out. I can try opening a terminal window and pinging the gateway/dns servers and can't even reach the gateway.
things I have tried:
- turned off MAC filtering on the wifi AP
- switched from a 5 GHZ wifi on the AP to 2.4 GHZ net on the AP and vice versa
- manually set the phone wifi preference to one or the other (5 or 2.4)
- battery pull on the phone
- delete network settings for my AP and reconfigure
I have not yet tried a static IP config on the phone but I can easily try that... {edited to add} well, I tried static config and that didn't help at all...
one other tidbit of info, I have a work Blackberry with wifi and it never loses wifi connectivity so this is a problem unique to my Nexus.
I'm running Cyanogen 10.0.0-toro and no, I haven't tried a full wipe and reload yet.
thoughts or suggestions?
I'm not trying to threadjack here, but I just wanted to share my experiences.
I've been have the exact same thing happen to my phone (Nexus maguro). I've tried every JB rom I could find, several different kernels and my wifi eventually always goes grey on me. All network activities stop. I'm back on stock everything right now and it still happens.
It happens on my home wifi as well as work wifi.
I'm about to puttstock ICS on my phone and try that out for a couple days.
Anyway, good luck with your problems, i'm going to follow this thread in hopes you'll get a solution that may help me.
If I do figure anything out i'll post back.

seems that this is a topic that has been posted on a bit over time with no real single culprit or fix. I'll post back if I figure anything out... I know in the Cyanogen thread, I saw info that stated that the MAC address of the phone was changing and I'm going to try and determine if that is happening to mine.
I have the same issue. Sometimes even when i pick up the phone, if i look fast enough i see that the Wi-Fi bars weren't even there! Thats only 1 out of 5 times though. The other time its usually just grey bars. Sometimes it actually will click back and they'll flash to blue and grey 2-3 times and then go solid blue. Then sometimes like you, they'll stay grey. I've tried everything too...reverting to stock, Different kernels, ROMs, routers, static IP, 2.4 or 5ghz, full auto mode. The only fix that makes it a little more reliable, is using Wi-Fi PM Fast. But even that, is not reliable. I'd say its about 50% reliable then, for a huge sacrfice in battery life. For me i've noticed this started to happen with 4.2. Before that i never had a problem. All other devices though no problem. My Nexus 7 is just fine. But the galaxy nexus, no matter what router or where i am, the Wi-Fi is totally unreliable. For me, it happens within 2 minutes that it will disconnect most times. Then 1 in 10 times it'll be fine for 10 hours.
In all honesty, i've given up. Just come to deal with it. Use mobile networks when i'm not needing to download. I can download files and stream music just fine too. If there is traffic going through, it never disconnects. But when its just sitting there without traffic, it disconnects, or, loses connection to google servers i should say.
well that's not good to hear...
I installed stock 4.0.4 a couple days ago and have not had my wifi go grey on me yet.

yeah, I love Cyanogen so not willing to go back to stock... waiting for them to finish 10.1 and I guess I'll see how it behaves then.
Hi all,
Just to say that I have the same problem. I have been upgraded from ICS to 4.2 and nothing had happened but I had to downgrade to 4.1.1 (AOKP Build 4) due to other issues and after that I started notice the WiFi problem.
At first I thought it was when the screen went off, but I has happened with screen on too. I have to turn WiFi off and the back on to connect properly again, very annoying.
As I said I started noticing this after I downgraded, but then again, I had used AOKP 4.1.1 before without this issue. I think that it is time to change my phone :/

I'm on Muzzy 4.2.2 and I'm currently having the same problem. It's not a new problem since I remember having it months ago (disabled my phone's WiFi because I kept missing emails and other notifications - grew tired of dealing with it). I thought it was my router, so I swapped it with a newer one recently, but it carried forward (old router was TRENDnet Draft N and the new one is ASUS RT-N66U).
I would like to know how to properly troubleshoot this problem.
I'm glad I didnt have to create a thread for this. I have been facing this problem quite a lot. I can confirm that WiFi works absolutely fine until 4.1.2, whether it is stock or CM10 (I havent tried the other ROMs yet). I have faced this problem only from 4.2. It still exists on 4.2.2. Happens on all the ROMs I have tried till now including CM10.1 nightly as well as the stock factory image.
When the phone is sleeping, it seems to lose WiFi connectivity and when woken up, the WiFi bars is grey though it is full. If I am very lucky, it will turn blue automatically. Most of the times, I have to switch WiFi off and back on for it to connect properly.
Anyone knows the root cause for this? In case this has been discussed in any other thread?

have you posted this information over in any of the threads where the developers are working such as Cyanogen in an effort to bring this issue to the forefront for more visibility?
I have had those wifi problems with every android version and rom I had on my GNex as far as I can remember.
Sometimes it will be able to reconnect but sometimes I have to disable and re-enable wifi to get it back.
I too thought that it might have been my crappy router as I have had multiple problems with it over the years (some Linksys router).
This is really annoying because it won't receive any e-mails until I randomly decide to have a look at my phone. :/

trust me, I understand your frustration... some days, I can go almost all day without loosing wifi data throughput and other days it won't last 10 minutes without going to gray bars.
unfortunately, no one is sharing any fixes which tells me that no one has a good handle on the problem.
Same issue for me on stock Android 4.2.2. Leave WiFi on overnight and when I wake up its connected to WiFi but gray bars...

The update to 4.2.2 drivers have fixed all WiFi issues for me. For the first time since 4.1 I can now use WiFi optimization now. And WiFi is fully reliable.

same thing happened to me on toroplus sourcery 5.1, after trying everything i could think of and talking to one of the devs, i finally did a fresh download of rom and gapps. wiped cache, wiped dalvik, factory reset, wipe system, deleted android folder off of storage then installed the fresh download of rom and gapps and its been working great for me since. hope this helps.

Can you elaborate on this? I've flashed 5 different modems and still get this problem... it happens to my cell service bars, as well. Would love to know what the cause is.

i just know ever since moving to a 4.2.2 kernel that has the 4.2.2 drivers my wifi has been stable. I know there was a post in the anarkia thread with the ak kernel that had the drivers. but i believe most any 4.2.2 kernel would have them implemented. i do have the newest bootloader and radio too. but i know as soon add i got the 4.2.2 drivers all issues were resolved wifi wise. of course i think if you have a 4.2.2 kennel you'll have them.

I'm looking forward to that update - I've been watching the Cyanogen threads for when I think the 10.1 has matured enough to become my daily driver... good to know you've had positive results!

me facing same issues , Solution would be to use an app called wifi fixer by zanish-g1 from the play store ...
it worked for me !! :good:

"loosing" 3G on 4.3 Toro

So i was wondering if anyone else is having this issue.
for reference, I am on VZW, with the 4.1.1 radios (as the updated 4.2 radios had me locked into 3G no matter what, at work)
and i ALWAYS do a complete wipe (data/cache/dalvik/system) between ROM flashes.
4.3 bootloader as well.
anyway, this has been an issue since 4.3 hit my device...anything from pure AOSP to CM builds.
when I am on 3G, the bars will go gray and i cannot pull down data at all. (and yes i know the difference between blue and gray bars, I'm saying ANYTHING will say "network not available" not just google apps)
toggling data on/off fixes the problem. I ususally run into this problem 2-3 times a day and it is ALWAYS on 3G.
its not a huge deal, just more annoying than anything else. just wondering if I am alone here. going to be giving the 4.2.2 radios another chance and see if that fixes things.
Having this exact issue...it's driving me nuts as well. At this point I believe I've tried every radio with no luck. Going to try jumping back to 4.2 soon to see if it solves the issue.
Me too
+1
I love how much fast my GNex is on 4.3, but I don't think I can deal with this data bull**** much longer. Frankly, I'm really getting tired of getting a new version of Android, being happy at first, then finding the HUGE bug that makes my phone a horror to use. WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN THINE VZW GNEX, GOOGLE!?!?
Just an update, as I updated my radios right around the time I updated to 4.3. I just switched back to CM 10.1 and all my data connection issues went away. That means it definitely has to do with 4.3 builds and not the radio firmware.

Data issues are being reported on nearly every rom for the gnex. My data reconnect /switch went from about 60 - 90 secs to a reasonable 5-10. (don't forget to reboot to apply changes)

So happy I found this thread!
I'm having the SAME issue: GSM i9250 on Straight talk ATT sim (apn setting are updated and correct). Stock not rooted; been happening since 4.3 Update. From what I've read even folks on the N4 are having similar issues.
I've factory reset 3-4 times for testing purposes (back to "normal" for about an hour then those pesky gray bars and NO data on 3G/4G).
I have to do the airplane mode toggle every 1/2 hour if I'm really using the internet. Big pain in the ass!
I always rooted my devices in the past and haven't done the GNEX because I always felt stock was smooth enough for my purposes (quasi-work-phone and I need stability). If I have to deal with this bull-sh&% I'm probably gonna have to root and install a 4.2 ROM.
Any-whoo...thanks for letting me rant :^)
Hopefully "kit-kat" will help?

Is this a fix?
My issue seems to be on 4g as well. If the phone switches from wifi to 4g or if it goes from 4g to 3g and back to 4g it shows a connection with bars but never connects to data again.

[Q] update modem/firmware/kernel to fix data issues?

Since I started working full time in my new career I haven't had time to keep up with the changes. Can I get someone in the know to help me out with this?
I remember reading that KitKat was known to have data issues. I have the following:
T-Mobile model SM-N900T
4.4.2
N900TUVUCNB4
custom kernel: 3.4.84-leanKrnerl-hlte-2.2 (don't remember name, got it here)
stock rom modified
Problem is every once in a while I lose data connection even though it shows a 4G icon and several bars of service. I even had T-Mobile send me the signal booster, which is installed at my home and seems to be working, but same issue continues to happen. And if I turn on WiFi at that point, WiFi connects, but 4G icon doesn't go away, and I stay without data access even though I'm supposedly connected to WiFi.
As you can imagine, this is annoying. It happens at least once a day, sometimes multiple times. Then it goes back to normal.
I don't have the time to update fully to a new rom with new firmware and have to reinstall everything. Is there new modem/radio/firmware/kernel I can install over my existing installation and expect to see this issue go away? Or am I stuck with this until I change phones?
Thanks for your patience and helping me out with this.
Unfortunately its a common issue and there is no fix for it.
quick fix it to out your phone in airplane mode then out of it
Thanks, although that sucks to hear. Of all my Samsung devices (see sig + smart tv, blu-ray, sound bar, tablets) the Note III has by far been the buggiest. Both my wife and I have had buggy experiences and I'm rooted and she's fully stock. Not nearly as happy with this Note III as I was with the Note II, that's for sure.
Once again, thanks for taking the time to answer.

I too had network issues. My 4G would slow to a crawl or would become non responsive. It would take a reboot or airplane mode toggle to make 4G work for about an hour before it goes bad again.
I updated to the latest NF4 firmware and it has been running for the past 48 hours with no issues.
Speed is not much of an improvement. I get around 30mbps /22mbps in NYC. But data stability has increased to a great extent. I do get the occasional hiccups with data , but it resolves itself in about 10-15 seconds.
Hope this helps you
Rooted Note 3 with stock NF4 firmware / debloated
Updated to nf4 before bed last night so it's only been half a day but will post result later tonight when I get home where I usually experience this data issue to see if the new firmware makes a difference.
Update: so far so good. I've been home for several hours now and haven't gotten any data issues.
OK spoke to soon. 10 minutes after I posted my data stopped working. Had to toggle airplane mode.
