[Q] Service issue on ICS/JB - Samsung Captivate Glide

On Gingerbread my device received service perfectly fine anywhere, I have AT&T. In my area I can't receive 3G or 4G so I am unsure if it's an issue pertaining to 2G, but I cannot receive a signal at all using any ICS or JB ROM I've tested thus far.
I'll take any suggestions whatsoever to potential fixes to the issue, so far I have ran out of ideas myself.

Always check the sim card if you haven't already

Of course I have, I've even cleaned the contacts. I can switch between GB and ICS or JB without touching the SIM card and have a connection on GB but nothing else.

I can't help you then. If you are using your glide and it isn't the phone you had when you signed up for your contract, then you may have to contact at&t and let them know you are using a captivate glide. This happened to me, because my captivate glide was a replacement for a Sharp fx Plus, which was a replacement for my moto backflip. I got the glide through a very backhanded way, and at&t didn't register the phone on the plan, which prevented the data from working. That's my story, I hoped it help.

The phone is infact the one from the contract, though the SIM card I'm using isn't from the device when i got the device. I had to have AT&T reactivate a SIM I had lying around when the one from the device was DOA. Think this might be the issue?

I left the sim card sitting in the phone for two months with no use (I had camp) and the sim card was messed up when I got home. Go to the at&t store and get a new sim card.

Also the phone was originally on gb when I left and returned. I had this issue on ics too (mine was that I couldn't send sms messages)

Just shooting in the dark, likely said device didn't have anything beyond an EDGE modem or the card may have predated AT&T's 3G network, or both. In any case, good chance said SIM card isn't even aware 3G or 4G exist.
I second "try a new one".

But the problem is I need to receive an EDGE signal, and the SIM can identify a 4G signal, I've used both networks while traveling on Gingerbread.

Go to an at&t store, and let them figure it out.

Na, the AT&T store near me resets my phone to factory and wipes all my apps than says, "I unno?" Pisses me off.

If you have any relatives that have a sim card that will work in your phone and see if that will work. Then tell the people at the at&t store you just troubleshooted already, and what you did. And just tell them you don't want a factory reset.

I called AT&T and they're shipping out new SIM cards for not just my device but for every device on my plan free of charge, If I remember to do an update on the results of the new SIM on Monday I'll post here.

OK.

Give me a good reason to put the new SIM card in

Is there any reason to put the new SIM card that came with my phone in? I put in the same one that I've been using for years (Dash->G1->G2->SGS2) and it works fine. 4G shows at the top of the screen. I haven't tried a speed test yet, but I'd bet I get 4G speeds the same way I did on my G2.
So, what good reason is there?
Right now, there is no reason. When the wifi calling becomes available it will require the new Sim.

do you have some sort of sentimental connection to that sim? why not just use the new one to make sure yoour up to date?
Where did you guys find the new sim card? Is it in the plastic wrapper with the manual/user guide? I don't see it in the box and I haven't opened up the plastic wrapping the manual/user guide is wrapped in. Fyi I did buy my phone from a T-Mobile.

I replaced my five yr old sim card with it because my old one seemingly caused some bad 3g data issues. I found this out by swapping sim cards with a friend who just signed with T-Mobile and an SGS2. I replaced my old one with the one that came with the SGS2 and now I'm not only seeing improved 3g speeds but also better call reception.

Quick question, my sim is about 3 months old. Will it work with wifi calling when it is released or is the SIM in the box even more "updated" than a 3 month old sim?

They aren't. They are tied to IMEI's. Two things you really need it for; 1. If you want to use WiFi calling after the maintenance update in a couple weeks, you will absolutely have to have this SIM card. No questions. It will not work. 2. After time, the older SIM cards will fail. This could lead to data access, call drop, sms sending/receiving and signal issues. If you have one now to activate, saves you a call and a trip to the local store for a replacement.
In the tmobile system we have 2 classifications of Sims. 2g (your dash) and 3g (hspa+).. make your conclusions

Actually the new Sim is a completely new revision designed for the high speed 4g network. It also has the gold contacts in a different design which is part of it look at old and new Sims if you don't believe me. I forgot the name of the new Sim but its what was taught and explained for tmobile techs (tier 2 and up support). Also most stores do not have this Sim revision in yet so use the one supplied in your box. 90% of most tmobile employees have no idea about the new Sim and only guess when asked.

***T-Mobile GAB Sim Card***

So ive been doing researches cuz i would like to get my "WIFI Calling" to work...
So i called T-mobile to see they had a solution for me...
And this is what they said:
They told me that the Normal Sim Card i have is not supported to use WIFI Calling.....
So the guy said that i need to buy a "GAB SIM CARD" that supports WIFI Calling and its price is $20

sim cards are and should be free from t-mobile. go to your local store.
BUT, when you got your phone (if you bought it from t-mobile) it should have come with a sim card, that supports wifi calling. That's what I had to do, had them activate the sim that came with my galaxy s2, and then started using it instead. and bam wifi calling
It sounds like you went to a dealer.
Not every t-mobile store is operated by t-mobile. Many of them are dealer stores that charge whatever they want.
Dealer stores are usually pre pay only, but there are some authorized to collect commission off contracts and that have access to t-mobiles "quickview" account software. (Quickview is the system the infamous SOC codes are set up in.)
A lot of dealers incorporate sleazy practices and do not conform to the standards set by t-mobile. They do things like charge egregious amounts of money on SIM cards, and may not honor the return polices set by t-mobile. They also sell lots of "out of production" phones they get at good deals ex. Lg-g2x for under 240 dollars wholesale and resell for over 550.
Call t-mobile and ask for a corporate store, not a dealer store.
T-mobile seems to allows this since "money is money"
As for the SIM card I don't think it has anything more than you're IMSI and your half of the encryption cypher, (for establishing a network connection) and some limited memory regarding contacts and previous network connection frequencies . . . The fact that your SIM card did not support wifi calling is most likely because t-mobile identified it a a card not to allow access to for whatever reason. I don't believe there is a technical deficiency in you're old SIM preventing such a technology, or support in you're new one for that matter.
But then again, I am no expert. If anyone knows more please share.

T-Mobile is actually using new type of SIM cards - GBA cards that allow WiFi calling via the SIM, and the device must support it as well - you must have a GBA SIM and a compatible device for this type of WiFi calling to work.
If I remember correctly, only the Galaxy S2 and the HTC Amaze support WiFi Calling through the SIM, rest of the devices have it using the app.

moving from verizon to sprint

I'm wanting to join my fiance's plan on sprint. I have a verison galaxy s3 currently. Am I able to just flash a sprint rom and have them activate it on the sprint network, or will I need to get a new phone when the time comes? I really don't want to have to get a new one with that expense if I don't have to.

Incorrect. Sprint uses a SIM for their LTE as well (all the carriers do). It's just embedded and not visible. Doesn't really matter to O.P, as he/she would need to get a Sprint phone anyway.

Come on that's splitting hairs..a SIM card is recognized as removable to allow portability of a device from one account to another (or even carrier to another) just by swapping the SIM card. Let's not confuse the guy. Sprint SGS3 does not have a SIM card, it has an imbedded chip. Otherwise it would be no issue but having the right sized screwdriver to remove and swap a Sprint 'SIM card' with a Verizon one. The hardware is different, thus you cannot do this.

Technically it's not the same, they have the same function but an embedded sim looks more like a chip soldered to the board and not an SD cardish shaped card. They serve the same function but do it slightly different. Kind of like a car and a truck, they both have 4 wheels and serve the same purpose (transportation) but they technically aren't the same thing. The main difference is removable sims are easily reprogrammed, while an embedded sim isn't(has to be detached from the board and put in a special reader that unlocks the programming function). I guess embedded sims would be considered more secure than a removable from several standpoints. User standpoint its not easily swapped out with another in the event of theft, and the data stored on it isn't as easily accessible to a thief. From the carrier standpoint its not as easy to reprogram and impossible to swap so the device can be unlocked to work on another carrier.

Sorry, you're wrong.
Whether hairs are being split or not, this statement "Verizon uses sim cards for their LTE phones while sprint doesn't." is factually wrong. Sprint does use a SIM for their LTE.
Like someone else pointed out, would you say that one phone with a non-removable battery DOES NOT TECHNICALLY use a battery versus a phone with a removable battery, just because etc etc...?
...and what would swapping a Sprint SIM with Verizon achieve? Sprint's LTE is on 1900mhz and Verizon is on 700mhz? You do realize that...

I know it has a built in sim card which cannot be removed so I basically consider it not having a sim card if I can't remove it and swap it out with another

[Q] TMobile SIM No Service On Unlocked T999 WHY?

I had purchased a used TMobileGalaxy S3 T999 that was unlocked (dont know what form was used to unlock it)
I had been using a net10 ATT compatible sim for a few months now on it, but today I decided to go ahead and activate at tmobile for their 4g speeds and better signal in my area... To my disappointment my phone shows no service with this sim card... The service rep tried the sim with 2 of their other galaxy devices and It worked fine... but not mine...and its a tmobile branded galaxy s3 t999.
So I took it home... figured maybe if I flash an updated modem/radio it will work... but no, flashed UVDMD5 modem/radio with no luck...
my old sim still works... my gfs sim works... and their from completely different carriers... so my phone is clearly unlocked for other carriers, but just not tmobile... its original carrier :'(
And I already activated for the 1 month $60 unlimited plan with 2.5gb 4G so its seems I'm out of money.. and left with no carrier and no phone to use currently... :'(
You guys have any idea how I can fix this?
Currently I'm on cyanogenmod 10.1 jb 4.2.2 (Im also going to try flashing stock fw to see if anything happens)
Looks like TMobile blocked the IMEI because someone reported the phone to be lost and claimed insurance benefits.

Who did u buy it from? Not necessarily tmo blocked Imei. Rep could of looked that up. Someone could of however changed the Imei. Damaging the security partition and they're not matching on tmobiles network.

Its more likely to be blacklisted if you ask me. I'd call Tmobile and ask. By the end of tge year, all us carriers are supposed to begin sharing blacklists. So if it is, it'll be rendered useless anywhere in the us in the near future.
I'm told att and T-Mobile already are sharing these lists. If that's so, and yours is blacklisted, then it'll probably get blocked by att soon too.
Oh, and anytime you're having problens like this, odin stock firmware. Get rid of the rom as a variable.
Call and find out for sure. ...

Yea flashed stock and got bars but couldnt register to network...called they confirmed my phone was reported lost -_-
So now my imei is blacklisted... and talking about changing it is a big nono everywhere from what ive seen
I bet its simple to change but I prefer having a specific set of instructions when messing with that stuff :S
Think about it please, if everywhere you look, everyone tells you not to do it, there is probably a very good reason.
It is illegal. And personally, I would not be comfortable putting someone in that position.
Unlock and sell it overseas is pretty much your only option. Sorry man...

As I understand it, by the end of the year all US carriers will be pretty much using the same blacklist, so it won't just be AT&T and T-Mobile.
And it's people like that "friend" that measures like this are necessary. Is he gonna turn scammer next and try to sell it on craigslist?....basically stealing a whole bunch of money from someone who can't afford to buy a new phone?
The only somewhat honest option is to unlock it and sell it overseas via eBay.

No! It is illegal! I understand that your friend was willing to commit fraud/theft by deception (or whatever you want to call it), so this being illegal probably doesn't matter either. But on pretty much every forum on the internet, including XDA, even just discussing this is against policy.
Please! Consider this! You are asking in a public forum for someone you don't even know to assist you in breaking the law! I truly hope you understand what I am telling you and take it to heart. Personally, I think it is just plain wrong to put someone in that kind of position by even just asking. Id recommend you drop the whole thing tbh.

I have an idea, go away from XDA for stuff like this, we do not do fraud here, nor do we try to assist in fraudulent actions.

[Q] help with galaxy s4 not registered to network

gf reported her phone lost because it was cracked, samsung sent her a new one so now i want her old one. I put in my sim card but it says "Not register to network" im thinking maybe t-mobile blocked the phone somehow since it was reported lost but I figured there was a work around. Friend told me unlocking the phone and setting it to international radios may help but i have no idea how to do this since im new to the android community. Switching from iphone to android! So yeah, please help!
White T-mobile Galaxy S4 on jellybean, updating it to kitkat though.
Yup, T-Mobile blocked it.. There's no legal way around it, maybe your gf calling T-Mobile to unblock it, but they'll probably charge her full price for the one they sent her.. You could try using a different carrier, but it could end up being blocked again.. You could also sell it to someone in another country, blacklist won't go past the US

To international what? But either way no.. Your service is denied everytime the phone tries to register to T-Mobile because the imei is what's being blocked

international radios, gonna unlock the sim. My gfs mom is probably going out of the country so if i unlocked it, she could use it outside the US right?and if she can i take it as she'd have to use a carrier other than t-mobile to do this though?
You can't use international radios.. And I don't know, but I would think so, using a local carrier should be fine

There are services that will fix this for you. I payed 35$ for my blocked tmobile s4 to be repaired.
I did this with an HTC EVO 3D. It was locked for 2 years so I flashed the phone to a different carrier and it worked. You might have problems with different features but it is posibble to still use the phone. Find a cellular store that will flash it. They normally charge around 50 dollars, give or take.

This is not a CDMA phone, you can't flash it like that.. And like I said, you can unlock it and it may work with another carrier but it can end up being blocked again, I've seen it happen

This happens to me sometimes and what I do is go under mobile networks and
Go to network operators and I let it load and then it registers on the correct network.
