[Q] Compass off - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Galaxy Note N7105, and my Compass is off by at least 45 degrees.
It's off all the time. Is there any way to fix this?

Have you tried getting the sensors to recalibrate? Hold it face down and swing around in a figure 8 pattern a few times. That should kick things back in to place.

Compass doesn't work?

Hello.
Can someone check their compass? Mine doesn't seem to be working (properly)
Testing it with GPS Essentials and Google Skymap, when the phone is parallel to the ground, screen up and turned counter/clockwise, the compass doesn't change at all. In fact the only position it moves when when its in horizontal position with the screen towards me, but even then it doesn't show proper directions..
Here is the video I took how it supposed to work (HTC Inspire 4G on right) and how it actually works.
http://youtu.be/xxxS_HZsRLU
That seems bad! can anybody else confirm please? It will suck to do all the work we r doing for the phone only to have to return them cuz of a bad compass.
Mine ain't all to..reliable. It just goes all over place. If im looking North the damn thing decides to tell me that I'm actually facing South East or something.
First I went outside and tried out skymap and indeed the tracking didn't seem reliable.
I came back inside and installed a compass app: (Compass, by Catch.com).
At first run it asks you to move the phone in a figure 8 to calibrate the magnetic sensor. I did so...Then I got some strange dialog that said "Abnormal magnetic field detected. Please calibrate". While the compass app is running, if I put the phone on a table (or any flat surface) and just turn the phone, the North arrow should stay pointing at north. But on my Nitro it's not!! What's worse is that damned "Abnormal magnetic field detected" keeps coming back.
I tried doing the same thing with my old Nexus One and it works fine, no complaints about "abnormal magnetic field" and when you turn the N1 the North arrow keeps pointing towards north.
This has me VERY worried about this phone!! I noticed the other day that while using the Navigation the software seemed to be locked up (non-responsive when trying to bring up the menu) and if the "abnormal magnetic field" had a play in it, then that would explain it.
---------- Post added at 01:51 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:32 AM ----------
Also tried installing Sensor Test to see how the other sensors were looking...I didn't even know our Nitro has a Gyroscope! Nice! Would that gyro in any interfere? It shouldn't correct?
Just wondering, n i know it's somewhere on google But I like to tickle all u brainiacs out there to explain wat is the purpose of a gyroscope in a phone. I don't see why we really need it in a phone.
Yeah, if have something like this:

Then apparently it's not working...
If something is really broken in these phones, then I think we all need to reach out to LG and complain or can we have a class action lawsuit against them for selling broken products?
This morning I sent them email regarding the compass issue. Let's see if what they say about it.
But if more people confirm this issue, we could do something about, would need more publicity though.
Publicity is easy enough. Once we get a good amount of people confirming the issue, we can start sending out the story to different forums n tech news sites like engadget, begrudge, gizmodo, n even our beloved xda. Then we can start posting those news on LG's forum n see wat they will say.
We did a similar thing for the atrix before when at&t was throttling back the hspa+ speeds on our phones while iPhone 4 was getting full speed. In months down the road they fixed it.

Here's my suggestion. Everyone with this phone n r having the compass issue with it, please record a video or take pictures/screenshots of how the compass is going haywire. Upload it here, so that when the story hits the news, they can all see that its not just one phone but many. We need to upload as many proves as we can to make a valid statement.

mine shows the sun and a bunch of constellations around it when I pointed at the sun, when I move my phone around it seems to track properly. not sure if that helps
By "properly" do you mean as in HTC Inspire in my video? Or it takes a few seconds after you stopped moving for the image to catch up? - the latter is the best I could achieve after activating GPS and wait for 5 minutes...
I found [email protected]'s thread over at the LG Forums and added my comment as well. Please, anyone else having this issue also post there as that is an official LG Forum.

Also, for the Skymap app, there's another potential issue at play...Screen resolution. I tried going into Settings > Display > Screen Optimization and checked-on Google Skymap and that did seem to help the app (redraw was much smoother).

It actually makes sense, since Nitro's resolution is "huge" and not many apps are optimized for such beast.
In fact on HTC Inspire the screen scrolls almost flawlessly in skymap compare to Atrix 4G, with dual core processor, good GPU, but higher screen resolution.
getting interesting lol
I hadn't noticed the compass issue until you guys mentioned it. I did a side by side with an actual compass, and my nitro was nonsense, just all over the place. But actually, when I turned off auto rotate, it fixed it. Check it out on your phone. With screen auto rotate disabled, my compass (and everything else associated, like maps, sky map and compass app) works great, but once enabled, my phone doesn't know it's head from it's ass. Let me know if you guys see the same effect.
It does improve a little on some compass apps, but skypmap sees no difference.
Weird. In that case, my phone is unusual. The compass works pretty well now (for apps including skymap) when compared to my X10 and an Atrix. They're quite similarly accurate.
I wonder if this is just a simple fix we can do ourselves, like maybe updating a file or changing some values in a file. I remember there was a file that we replaced in the Atrix phones to improves its GPS pickup speed and accuracy. I dont know if we can do the same thing here. Let me look for that thread back in the Atrix forum.

[Q] Calibrate Accelerometer/ How to?

Hey guys. I know that that has been ask before but there doesn't seem to be a solution.
The Accelerometer sensor of my GSM Nexus is miscalibrated.
E.g. playing doodle jump and puting my phone flat on the desk makes the "doodler" jump to the right! Thats in all apps! Also my screen roatets while putting my phone on the desk! That is really anoying!
I'm sure there has been a rom where there was an option to calibrate the sensor.
Maybe u guys or devs have an idea how to fix that. It would be really apreciated 'cause I'm not the only one with this problem.
Thanks in advance
droid_legacy
I'd like to know this as well. I've had this gnex going on 18 months and have had that problem for 17 of them. I knew how to do it on my old eris, but that method didn't work on gnex.

There ARE issues with the GPS

I'm sure people are going to flame me and adamantly disagree, but please hear me out. No one wants this to be wrong more than me. I really like this phone, but I can't live with a broken GPS.
I have tested this two days in a row. I go to work for 9 hours, all radios are on. I never turn the GPS off. When I get home, I change clothes and go on a four mile walk. I use Runtastic to track this. Two days in a row, the GPS symbol comes up, but never stops blinking. If I toggle GPS off and back on, it gets a lock immediately and the GPS icon stops blinking. It will hold the lock for the rest of the walk. Rinse and repeat. Launching Maps or GPS test does not help it get a fix. It stays blinking until I toggle the GPS off/on.
The moral here is that I would have to toggle the GPS off/on every day before I walk. I have not tested this with navigation yet because I ride a motorcycle most days, but I intend to before sending it back. This is strangely similar to the (known) issues that my AT&T Note 3 had.
Please tell me that some of you have seen this. I don't see how it could be a faulty unit. My GS5, G3, and Z3c do not have this issue under the exact same circumstances. The GS5 being the most similar in hardware/software.
I used GPS in the car today and it never lost a lock. I haven't used the app that you speak of however. Is there anything that I can do to help test?
This happened to my note 3. The GPS chip was bad. The hardware was the problem. If you call att they can connect to your phone remotely and see what percentage you are connecting the GPS chip. They told me I was only getting 60%. Sent me a new phone within 2 days...

Good to know it didn't lose the lock on your drive. My Note 3 used to jump around all over the place.
Honestly, I'm not sure what you could do. I don't think it's the app. When it gets like this, Maps, GPS Test, etc. will not get a solid lock until I toggle GPS off and on. The only reason I notice it on Runtastic is because that's when I use the GPS every day.
Something is happening with the GPS chip. It's either going to sleep and not waking up, or it's getting stuck on old GPS data or something. Like I said, I can reproduce it every day just by using it normally and then trying to use the GPS when I get home from work.

Yeah, I had the Note 3, but from what I read it was software. I never did get my unit replaced and I sold it that way.
I bought my Note 4 through Amazon, so I'll have to do a return through them, if it really is defective.
It's possible. I hope you can get it to work. My note 4 is running flawless
Here's the thing too, guys. After I toggle the GPS off/on, the thing works flawlessly for the rest of the evening and through most of the next day. Like, it gets a lock inside within seconds.
That's the thing. It's not that it doesn't work at all. It just sort of goes on strike at the same time every night and has to be woken up again.

How can anyone here, including me, make declarative statements about what a device that's been out less than a week is or isn't doing across the board? Here's my GPS experience and I use it a lot. I use "GPS only" with Wi-Fi and carrier network sensing turned off. The GPS is slow on first lock; slower than my Note 3 was. Once it's locked it stays locked with the exception of losing signal when it encounters obstructions. That's normal and a byproduct of GPS technology not anything specific to the Note 3 or 4. I never had the issues with my Note 3's GPS that some people reported. Other than the slower initial lock I'd say, based on my experiences, the Note 4's GPS is significantly more stable and better at holding a signal. I use Here Beta a lot and the only other issue I've encountered is when the app's out of focus and comes back to the foreground it takes about a second for it to reorient itself. All that said I'd rather have the Note 4's GPS than the Note 3's (keeping in mind my Note 3's GPS served me well).

I was actually just hoping that someone may have noticed similar behavior. I always seem to be the first to discover issues because I get my phone early and really test it. Often times, I post something like this and no one replies or reports the same issue, then months later a new thread blows up about it or my thread gets resurrected. I'm just trying to determine if this is a real issue so I can return the phone, if necessary. I can't life with a buggy GPS. I use it way too much.
It takes about 5 seconds to get a gps lock for me. And about another 10 to get the most accurate reception.
This is indoors, just tested it in my bedroom.

Yeah, well thanks, but that's really not the issue here.

The topic is gps and initial locking, which I commented that I'm not having the issue.
If the OP is, then it's possible he has a defective device since I don't see that issue.

The topic is GPS and occasional initial locking. Mine works fine when it works, but it's situational. Telling me that yours locks fine doesn't help me because mine does too, right now.
I'm trying to see if anyone else is experiencing times when the GPS simply stops working until they toggle it off and back on.

I wasn't being "*****y" at you on purpose. For some reason the Note 4's forums have had a large number of "gate," "OMG!!!," and threads liberally using the royal "we" with much of what's said being baseless or exaggerative. My tone was carry over from the thread on the international forum where a guy launched a "Pen-gate" thread complete with video because his cheap-ass magnetic case was causing S Pen dead spots. So apologies. Notebook Check does thorough GPS testing and their review of the Note 4 should be up soon. Here's a sample from the Xperia Z3 Compact.
They tested the Note 3's GPS here...

I just finished a 1700 MI trip I lost location once but it was in the back woods of Iowa. Much better than the note 3 I owned.

Thanks, man. It may just be something in my environment or software setup, but it's definitely odd.
I see you on here a lot and I've always found you to be helpful, so no harm no foul.
I was having issues with my phone holding a lock too. It would find satellites, but would keep dropping out every couple of seconds.
I downloaded the "GPS Test" app, updated AGPS data from the settings menu, and now it locks and stays locked 100% of the time. And locks really fast, too.
May not help anyone else, but thought I would share.

I had a bad GPS chip in my Note 3, it wouldn't get a lock. Seems to work great on my Note4 so far, I use Waze every day driving to and from work.
One thing though is that if you have GPS accuracy set to also use WiFi/mobile networks you will drop GPS a LOT, that was something I noticed as it tried to lock onto WiFi carriers. I turned this off and only use GPS for accuracy and it works perfectly with the usual caveats, tunnels etc.

I haven't seen this myself. I just checked Google Maps and it displays my location immediately, without my having toggled the GPS today.
So I believe that you're having a hardware problem, but luckily it's not inherent in the Note 4, so you should be able to exchange for one with a properly working GPS.
Okay, guys. I'm an idiot. Turns out that this is all Runtastic. As long as the app is open in the background (during my runs/walks), the GPS icon blinks. Even opening Maps, GPS test, etc. will not give me a solid lock. As soon as I kill Runtastic, though, all is fine. It would seem that this is just how Runtastic uses the GPS and it overrides everything else. I had to do further testing to figure this out, but it would appear that I jumped the gun. For that, I apologize. I'm just glad I don't have to send my Note 4 back.
Thanks to everyone who participated.

[Q] GT-S7560M - Wifi won't scan.

Bought this (Samsung Galaxy Ace II X/ Trend GT-S7560M ) as a second phone. Wifi will not scan. I can click on scan - but it comes back with nothing whatsoever.
I've carried out a factory reset.
Does anyone know what other steps I can take to troubleshoot this??
Still can't resolve this problem. I know this is a budget phone and there's only so much energy that can get expended on addressing stuff like this. However, this is my second phone for personal stuff - and it otherwise suits my needs (can't really justify having 2 top of the range galaxy notes - not in terms of outlay or pocket space).
It would be handy to have wifi working - so I'd still like to at least determine why it's not working and figure out what it would take to resolve. If anyone can point me in the right direction with regard to troubleshooting, I'd be very grateful.

Cantact dialer

Hey guys, I hope I'm in the right forum here. I FINALLY got myself a NOTE 4 and I love it. But something caught my eye the other day. My fiancé has a Note as well (AT&T) and whenever she gets a call; she can put her call on hold and then go back to it when she's done. It's like she gets an extra step that we don’t on our phone. I was wondering if anyone had ever tried porting a stock TouchWiz contact dialer from an AT&T/T-Mobile Note 4 over to a Sprint Note 4? Again sorry if this seems like a dumb question, but that little detail seemed kool to me and even though I searched for it, I couldn't find a dialer apk files anywhere. Then again, I don't know if it's even possible. Any help/guidance would be much appreciated, Thanx.
